Damarie Thomas, a twelve-year-old Jamaican teen, was concentrating on practising his skills for the upcoming football contest when he felt a hard tackle(抢断球) from behind, which pushed him to the ground. His world changed overnight. Though his injuries did not result in paralysis(瘫痪), they were serious enough to affect his movement. It was the last time that he had played football.
Now Thomas is an adult and he uses a wheelchair to travel distances. Despite a number of difficulties, he perseveres in his attempts to walk. He proudly claims that from being able to move only two steps at a time, he can now do five steps unaided. Limited resources have influenced his treatment, but he is hopeful that he will be able to complete recovery soon. Having an experience like this would have broken many an adult, but not this young man. “It’s not what happens but how you come back from it that counts,” he said.
After his injury, Thomas did well in his primary school exams and gained a place at one of the top-rated high schools in Jamaica. However, at that time the school was not equipped to accommodate a physically disabled student and he had to accept a transfer to a high school near his home.
It is a blessing that Thomas has now signed up for an information technology course at Abilities Foundation, proudly claiming his improvement by learning coding(编码). The Abilities Foundation aims to equip the disabled with skills through training. The training centre encourages Thomas to chase his dream — he wants to become a successful software engineer, creating innovative technology accessible and beneficial to all, especially people with disabilities.
24.Why couldn’t Damarie Thomas continue to play football?
A.Because he became completely paralysed.
B.Because he was seriously injured.
C.Because he moved to another country.
D.Because he wanted to focus on his study.
25.What once affected his treatment?
A.His weak physical condition.
B.His serious leg injury level.
C.The limited conditions then.
D.His imperfect academic record.
26.What is Damarie Thomas’ dream?
A.To become a software engineer.
B.To earn much money.
C.To graduate from the Abilities Foundation.
D.To become a doctor to help people with disabilities.
27.Which of the following can be used to describe Damarie Thomas?
A.Humorous and smart. B.Kind and honest.
C.Confident and generous. D.Brave and strong.
【答案】24.B 25.C 26.A 27.D
根据第一段中“Though his injuries did not result in paralysis(瘫痪), they were serious enough to affect his movement. It was the last time that he had played football.(虽然他的伤势没有导致瘫痪,但已经严重到影响了他的行动。那是他最后一次踢足球)”可知,Damarie Thomas不能再踢足球是因为他受了重伤。故选B。
25.细节理解题。根据第二段中“ Limited resources have influenced his treatment, but he is hopeful that he will be able to complete recovery soon. (有限的资源影响了他的治疗,但他希望自己能够很快完全康复)”可知,当时有限的条件影响了他的治疗。故选C。
26.细节理解题。根据最后一段中“The training centre encourages Thomas to chase his dream — he wants to become a successful software engineer, creating innovative technology accessible and beneficial to all, especially people with disabilities.( 培训中心鼓励Thomas去追逐他的梦想——他想成为一名成功的软件工程师,创造创新的技术,让所有人都能接触到,并从中受益,尤其是残疾人)”可知,Damarie Thomas的梦想是成为一名成功的软件工程师。故选A。

A team of researchers at ETH Zurich has the perfect long-lasting solution to our fog problem. They have developed a very thin and gold-based coating (涂层) that can turn sunlight into heat, which can be applied to glass and other surfaces to prevent them from fogging.
The special coating selectively absorbs radiations from the sunlight and creates a heating effect that is powerful enough to keep fog away from the surface of an object. The coating basically employs heat to stop fogging. The coating absorbs a large part of the radiation, which causes it to heat up — by up to 8℃.
Previously, products like anti-fogging sprays create a very thin film (膜) of water on the surface to remove fog. The problem with such surfaces is pollution. Along with water, the sprays also attract dirt, dust, oil, and various other dirty substances, and just a little dirt on the surface makes it useless. However, the new coating does not absorb water. Furthermore, the coating is significantly thinner, which makes it more transparent as well as flexible. It is heated passively and requires, during daytime, no additional energy source.
Gold might be expensive, but the researchers stress that their coating requires so little that the material costs remain low. Their coating is produced with standardized procedures that can be easily scaled up, ensuring cost efficiency. However, although this product can work at very low levels of solar exposure, it does depend on a certain amount of light.
The researchers will develop the coating further for other applications. In the process, they will examine whether other metals work just as well as gold. The researchers have already filed a patent. Hopefully, this groundbreaking product will soon be available on the market.
28.How does the new coating work?
A.By cooling air away from the object. B.By reflecting sunlight selectively.
C.By creating a thin film on the surface. D.By transforming sunlight into heat.
29.What is the weakness of previous anti-fogging products?
A.They are too thin. B.They tend to get dusty.
C.They are heated passively. D.They do not absorb water.
30.What do we know about the new coating?
A.It is rather costly. B.It relies on sunlight to work.
C.It is difficult to get the raw material. D.It occupies too much time to produce.
31.What will the researchers probably do next?
A.Reduce the cost of the product. B.Promote the sales of the new coating.
C.Put the product to use in more fields. D.Conduct a survey on the availability of the new coating.
根据第二段的“The special coating selectively absorbs radiations from the sunlight and creates a heating effect that is powerful enough to keep fog away from the surface of an object.(这种特殊的涂层选择性地吸收阳光中的辐射,并产生足够强大的加热效果,使雾远离物体表面)”可知,新涂层的工作原理是通过将阳光转化为热量来防止雾的形成。故选D。
根据第三段的“The problem with such surfaces is pollution. Along with water, the sprays also attract dirt, dust, oil, and various other dirty substances, and just a little dirt on the surface makes it useless.(这种表面的问题是污染。除了水,喷雾还会吸引污垢、灰尘、油和其他各种脏物质,表面上的一点污垢就会使其无用)”可知,以前的防雾产品的缺点是它们容易变脏,因为它们不仅吸引水分,还吸引污垢、灰尘、油脂和其他各种脏物,表面只有一点点污垢就会使其失效。故选B。
30.细节理解题。根据第四段的“However,although this product can work at very low levels of solar exposure,it does depend on a certain amount of light.(然而,尽管该产品可以在非常低的阳光照射下工作,但它确实取决于一定量的光线)”可知,这种新涂层虽然可以在非常低的太阳辐射水平下工作,但它确实依赖于一定量的光线。
根据最后一段“The researchers will develop the coating further for other applications. In the process, they will examine whether other metals work just as well as gold. The researchers have already filed a patent. Hopefully, this groundbreaking product will soon be available on the market.(研究人员将进一步开发涂层用于其他应用。在此过程中,他们将检查其他金属是否与黄金一样有效。研究人员已经申请了专利。希望这种突破性的产品很快就会上市)”可知,研究人员将进一步开发这种涂层,以应用于其他领域。由此可推知,他们下一步可能会将产品应用到更多的领域。故选C。

The story of our home galaxy (星系) may tend to be changed. That’s because a bar-shaped collection of stars at the center of the Milky Way appears to be much younger than expected.
The bar is a prominent feature of our galaxy. It covers thousands of light years and connects the galaxy’s arms of stars, making them look like spinning (旋转) water. In computer models of the Milky Way’s development, the bar tends to form early in the galaxy’s around 13-billion-year lifetime. But the ages and locations of metal-rich stars suggest the bar finished forming just a few billion years ago, researchers report.
“These metal-rich stars are basically like records of ancient stars that are telling the story of our home galaxy,” says Samir Nepal, working at the Leibruz Institute for Astrophysics Potsdam in Germany.
Stars with large numbers of metals are built from the remains of stars that have since exploded. Those metals enrich the materials at the center of galaxies like the Milky Way, which is why a new generation of metal-rich stars can form only deep inside galaxies.
Using data from the European Space Agency, Nepal and his coworkers recreated the development of the Milky Way bar through its influence on the metal-rich stars. They inferred the bar’s history, just as you might figure out where the batters stand in a baseball game by looking at the flight of the balls they hit, even if you can’t see home plate.
In the study, the researchers found out a burst (迸发) of star formation in the central part of the galaxy that became quiet about 3 billion years ago. The down turn seems to mark the end of the Milky Way bar’s development, the researchers report. After that burst, the inflow of new material into the bar probably dropped off significantly. That may account for why the bar developed so late.
32.What does the underlined word “prominent” in paragraph 2 mean?
A.Simple. B.Long-lost. C.Man-made. D.Noticeable.
33.What can we know about metal-rich stars from Nepal’s words?
A.They remind us to make up old stories. B.They show the history of the Milky Way.
C.They record the development of the earth. D.They can help keep our home galaxy safe.
34.Why does the author mention a baseball game?
A.To compare the effects of the metal-rich stars.
B.To introduce a new sports event among students.
C.To explain how scientists track the age of the bar.
D.To give an example of the importance of teamwork.
35.Which is the most suitable for the text?
A.A Bar of Stars Looks Surprisingly Young B.Now Advances in Space Exploration
C.Various Metal Stars Are Found in Space D.The Development of the Milky Way
【答案】32.D 33.B 34.C 35.A
根据第一段中“That’s because a bar-shaped collection of stars at the center of the Milky Way appears to be much younger than expected.(这是因为银河系中心的一个棒状恒星群似乎比预期的要年轻得多。)”以及划线词的下文“It covers thousands of light years and connects the galaxy’s arms of stars, making them look like spinning (旋转) water. (它覆盖了数千光年,连接着星系的恒星臂,使它们看起来像旋转的水)”可知,这个棒子非常巨大,塑造了银河系的形态,是银河系的一个显著特征;“The bar is a prominent feature of our galaxy.(这个棒是我们银河系的一个prominent特征。)”划线词prominent意思是“显著的”,与Noticeable意思一致。故选D项。
33.细节理解题。根据第三段中“These metal-rich stars are basically like records of ancient stars that are telling the story of our home galaxy (这些富含金属的恒星基本上就像古代恒星的记录,讲述着我们银河系的故事)”可知,富含金属的恒星是一种古老的记录,展现了银河系的历史。故选B项。
根据第五段中“They inferred the bar’s history, just as you might figure out where the batters stand in a baseball game by looking at the flight of the balls they hit, even if you can’t see home plate. (他们推断出棒子的历史,就像你在棒球比赛中,即使你看不到本垒板,也可以通过观察击球的飞行来判断击球手所处的位置)”可推知,此处作者通过在棒球比赛中我们如何判断击球手的位置,来解释科学家是如何追踪棒状恒星群年龄的。故选C项。
35.主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是第一段“The story of our home galaxy (星系) may tend to be changed. That’s because a bar-shaped collection of stars at the center of the Milky Way appears to be much younger than expected. (我们银河系的故事可能会被改变。这是因为银河系中心的一个棒状恒星群似乎比预期的要年轻得多)”可知,文章主要介绍了一项研究发现,银河系中心的棒状恒星群可能比预期年轻,并解释了这一恒星群的重要意义、该研究的研究方法和具体结果。因此,A项“棒状恒星看起来出奇的年轻”最契合文章主旨,适合作为文章标题。故选A项。
Sometimes, it’s good to be bored
“I am dying of boredom,” complains the young wife Yelena in Chekhov’s 1897 play Uncle Vanya. Of course, if Yelena were around today, we know what she would do: pull out her smartphone and find something fun. Today it is easy to get rid of boredom. 36
That is the finding of two fascinating recent studies. In one, researchers asked subjects to do something boring, like copying out numbers from a phone book, and then take tests of creative thinkings. The result? 37 In the second study, subjects gave more answers to a word test than a non-bored control group after being forced to watch a dull screensaver.
“An restless mind hungers for stimulation, so boredom becomes a seeking state,” says Sandi Mann, the psychologist at the University of Central Lancashire. “ 38 ” Parents will tell you that kids with “nothing to do” will eventually invent some fun games to play — with a cardboard box, a light switch, whatever.
The problem, the researchers worry, is that these days we don’t struggle to overcome these slow moments. “ 39 ” Mann says. “This might relieve us temporarily, but it shuts down the deeper thinking.” So here is an idea: Instead of always avoiding boredom, embrace and face it. Sometimes, anyway. Mann has found she gets some of her best thinking done when she is driving her car and therefore can’t be distracted by her phone.
40 The good type inspires you to see what can come of it. The bad type, in contrast, tires you and makes you feel like you can’t be bothered to do anything. An important part of our modern task, then, is learning to evaluate these different types of boredom — to distinguish the useful kind from the harmful one.
A.And there is, of course, bad boredom.
B.Bored subjects came up with more creative ideas.
C.But what if boredom is a meaningful experience?
D.These moments are a lot more valuable than expected.
E.Actually, tips on getting away from boredom are countless.
F.We try to kill every moment of boredom with mobile devices.
G.When not satisfied with your state, you’re seeking and engaged.
【答案】36.C 37.B 38.G 39.F 40.A
36.上文提到““I am dying of boredom,” complains the young wife Yelena in Chekhov’s 1897 play Uncle Vanya. Of course, if Yelena were around today, we know what she would do: pull out her smartphone and find something fun. Today it is easy to get rid of boredom.(在契诃夫1897年的戏剧《万尼亚叔叔》中,年轻的妻子叶莲娜抱怨道:“我无聊得要死。”当然,如果叶莲娜在今天,我们知道她会做什么:拿出她的智能手机,找一些有趣的事情。今天摆脱无聊很容易)”指出人们讨厌无聊,总是想摆脱无聊。C项“But what if boredom is a meaningful experience?(但如果无聊是一种有意义的体验呢?)”

The bad type, in contrast, tires you and makes you feel like you can’t be bothered to do anything.(好的类型激励你看到它(带来的好的)结果。 A项“And there is, of course, bad boredom.(当然,也有糟糕的无聊)”引出下文对两种无聊类型的对比和讨论,上下文语意连贯。故选A。

No Pain, No Gain
“No Pain, No Gain” stresses the importance of hard work and devotion in achieving success. I've learned this valuable lesson from my own experience.
At the beginning of high school, I struggled with maths, which left me doubtful of my abilities. However, reminding myself that success never comes easily, I was determined to face the challenge. I tackled difficult problems with patience and turned to my teachers and classmates for help. Over time, my efforts began to pay off. I made great progress in learning maths and fully understood the meaning of “No Pain, No Gain”.
This experience serves as a reminder that only through hard work and devotion can we succeed.

The sun was already beginning to sink. The air was somewhat bitter. It was Robert’s 12th birthday. But Robert was walking home alone with his eyes focusing on his worn-out shoes. Kids after school were riding by in twos and threes, ringing their bicycle bells merrily. Robert didn’t raise up his head, but he knew clearly that those guys were wearing big smiles on their faces, and that the strings of their bike wheels were shining in the golden sunlight. “How lucky they are!” Robert thought to himself. He admired everyone who had his own bike. He had dreamed many times that he was one of those who were on their bikes to and from school. He really wanted a bike, especially as a gift for his 12th birthday. However, Robert was clear that his family couldn’t afford it. His parents worked hard only to meet their daily life need. Fortunately, the family lived happily together regardless of the poor condition. Robert should be satisfied with it. But he just couldn’t help feeling sad about not being able to own a bike.
Soon the sun disappeared from nowhere and the street lamps were on, casting Robert’s figure on the ground. Looking down at his moving shadow, Robert stopped his steps suddenly. He stretched out (伸出) both of his arms with his hands holding something tightly, and then raised his right leg and left leg in turn to push himself forward. Definitely, the figure on the ground did as Robert did. It seemed that he was riding a bike. A brand new black handsome bike! A bike that Robert had been dreaming of. The imagination excited and delighted Robert a lot. He sped up his imaginary bike towards his home happily. The air became sweet and gentle.

When Robert got home, the house was dark and it seemed nobody was there. The quietness felt strange, making the place feel bigger and emptier than usual. He walked through the silent rooms, hoping to find a sign of his family. But there was nothing, just the stillness that seemed to follow him. Just when he was about to feel sad, a soft light from the backyard caught his attention. Curious, he headed outside.
Robert rushed excitedly to the yard only to find an old gray bike. His heart dropped a little at first, expecting something different. But then he saw the bike’s shiny new tires and the note next to it, which said: “My dear son, now I can’t afford a completely new one , but I hope you’ll like this one with new tires .” It wasn’t the bike he dreamed of, but it was a gift full of love and memories. It wasn’t new, but it was special. With a mixed emotion, Robert stepped onto the bike happily.
