In our life some of us don’t think of our parents as friends, but they can be. Mine are.
My dream is to be a professional musician: I’d like to be a real star. Sometimes when I tell that to some of my school friends, especially those who don’t know me well, they look at me and give a laugh, like they don’t know how to take it. Am I a serious talent or an egotistical (自大的) jerk? My parents don’t laugh at or question me. And they didn’t doubt that I could learn to play the saxophone (萨克斯). They bought me one last year.
I didn’t realize the saxophone was so hard to learn! I made lots of noise as I tried to play it, but my mom and dad never complained. “Sounds great! Tony!” Dad told me. “You’re really getting better!” Mom said. Four months ago, I just realized it was too much for me to master it, but both Mom and Dad assured me that I could do it. Dad often says, “You can do anything you set your mind on.” So I don’t give up.
So, when I do make it as a professional musician, I’ll owe a lot of my success to my parents not only for buying me the saxophone, but also for believing in me. So until then, I just picture myself up there on stage with the bright lights. In Nov. 2024, BYD, a famous Chinese car company, made history by producing its ten millionth new energy vehicle (NEV) in Guangdong, China. This is a milestone for BYD and shows how quickly China’s NEV industry is growing.
BYD’s NEV production has speeded up a lot in recent years. It took the company about 15 years to make the first 5 million NEVs, but its next 5 million were produced in just 15 months. At a special ceremony, BYD’s boss—Wang Chuanfu said that they would spend more money connecting AI with cars to make them smarter.
China has been focusing a lot on NEV development, because of the needs of people there. Most NEVs sold in China are bought by Chinese people. In the first 10 months of 2024, China’s car companies sold over 8.6 million NEVs domestically, more than 8 times’ sale abroad in the same period. For the first time ever, in July 2024, NEVs were sold more than gas cars in China, with 51. 1% of the Chinese market.
China’s success is because of the high needs in China, a good supply chain, and big breakthroughs in technology. Zhou, a car industry expert, said, “While some places, like the EU and US, are slowing down, it’s not because they don’t want NEVs. It’s because they have been facing financial (财政的) challenges.” However, the industry still requires long-term improvements, like more technological creation and better solid-state battery technology. China’s NEV market is now very attractive to both Chinese and foreign car companies. As the world tries to fight climate change, NEVs are important for reducing carbon emissions (排放). By 2030, the world needs to sell 45 million NEVs to reach carbon neutrality (碳中和) goals.
12. How long did it take BYD to make the second 5 million NEVs?
A. 15 years. B. 15 months. C. 10 months. D. One year.
13. What does the underlined word “domestically” most likely mean?
A. In poor area. B. For private use. C. Within the country. D. In a short time.
14. Why are the EU and the US slowing down in NEV production according to Zhou?
A. Their people prefer gas cars. B. They have money problems.
C. They have no interest in NEVs. D. They don’t have technical experts.
15. What is the passage mainly about?
A. The importance of NEVs in fighting climate change.
B. The rapid growth and success of China’s NEV industry.
C. BYD’s achievement in producing the ten millionth NEV.
D. The comparison between China and other countries in NEV sales.

An old saying used for forecasting (预报) the weather says, “Red sky at night, sailors’ delight (高兴). Red sky in the morning, sailors take warning.” Is the saying true? A red sky at sunset may mean that there are clear skies to the west, where the sun sets. A red sky at sunrise usually means that the clear weather has already passed, so storms might be coming.
Forecasting the weather has been practiced for thousands of years. In the 5th century BC, the Greeks sent out forecasts to sailors. They used signs in nature to forecast the weather. But today, meteorologists (气象学家) give exact forecasts in advance (提前).They use scientific instruments to study weather conditions around the world and make forecasts, Pilots, farmers and many other people depend on these forecasts. Luckily, most of us can simply look on the smart phone or turn on the TV to find out what kind of weather is coming.
If you are looking for some signs of the weather, pay attention to nature. There are two basic rules used in weather forecasting: Weather generally moves from west to east, and low air pressure usually means rain or snow. So pay attention to the signs. If rainbows form in the west at sunrise, the sun is on the way. Smell the flowers--their smells are stronger in wet air. What are the ants doing? Are they moving to higher ground? This could mean a drop (下降) in air pressure. Are the birds flying low or high? Falling air pressure may influence birds’ ears, so they fly low. And if the sky is red at sunset, you might plan a picnic for the next day!

从文中提取的天气预测迹象如下:1. 根据“If rainbows form in the west at sunrise, the sun is on the way.”可知,日出时西方出现彩虹预示晴天将至。 2. 根据“Are the ants doing? Are they moving to higher ground? This could mean a drop in air pressure.”可知,蚂蚁搬到更高的地方可能意味着气压下降(可能有天气变化)。故填(1) If rainbows form in the west at sunrise, the sun is on the way.(2) The ants are moving to higher ground, this could mean a drop in air pressure.(答案不唯一)

【答案】参考范文 (One possible version)
Dear Tina,
Last summer, I met an accident during a hiking trip with my friends. While climbing a rocky path, my classmate Lingling fell off, hitting her head on a sharp stone. Her head was seriously hurt. She was lying on the ground, unable to move. Remembering the first-aid training from school, my friends and I immediately gave her a first aid.
First, we use a clean cloth to stop the blood. My friend called 120. When the doctors and nurses arrived, they spoke highly of our action.
This experience taught me the importance of staying calm and the first aid training in our school. Basic first-aid skills are necessary and can save lives.

And in the front row I see my two best friends with their little black shades (墨镜) on, clappinig their hands and smiling. Oh yeah! I’ll make them proud! I just need to keep practicing.

Black Myth: Wukong, a Chinese video game, became a global hit when it came out on August 20, 2024. Within three days, it sold over 10 million copies, breaking records for Chinese-made games. Based on the Chinese novel Journey to the West, the game lets players become the “Destined One” (天命之人), a brave monkey who follows the legendary (传说中的) Monkey King’s footsteps and saves Monkey King from darkness.
The game has amazed the players. However, Many players, especially those from Western countries, find the game’s story and characters hard to understand because there’s so much about Chinese culture in the game, such as mythical creatures (神话人物), traditional Chinese music, and philosophical (哲学的) ideas from Journey to the West. To help others, some Western players studied the novel Journey to the West deeply. For example, one fan wrote a summary of Sun Wukong’s magical powers in 100 chapters of the book.
Through the game, players not only enjoy exciting adventures but also learn about Chinese culture: Patrick McCarthy, an American player, said, “Sun Wukong feels different from Western heroes like Spider-Man. He pays more attention to freedom and independence than following strict rules.” This shows that the game has started discussions about cultural differences.
Black Myth: Wukong’s success tells us that traditional stories can find new life in modern media. It also shows that how video games can act as bridges between cultures. By mixing ancient stories with modern technology, the game invites the world to explore Chinese culture.

A. He is the same as Spider-Man. B. He likes following strict rules.

A. Black Myth: Wukong Hits the World

C BYD’s achievement in producing the ten millionth NEV.
