Museum lets visitors walk in the shoes of a police officer
Police shows on TV are filled with high-speed car chases and crimes solved in a few minutes. But that’s not a typical day for a real-life police officer. To get a more accurate picture, head to the National Law Enforcement Museum in Washington. Exhibits there invite visitors to use their senses of sight, hearing, touch and smell to gather information the way police do.
Let’s look at a few exhibits.
K-9 Units
See a video of how dogs are trained to join K-9 Units. Test your ability to smell and identify various scents (气味). Learn which kinds of dogs are better at tracking bad persons while others are better at sniffing out dangerous goods.
The Web of Law Enforcement
You’ll quickly learn that crime-solving is a team effort, not only within one department, but among organizations across the country. Inspection Service is just one of the law enforcement groups helping local police when needed. For example, six organizations worked together on a national park graffiti (涂鸦) case.
Five Communities
Every community is different. Learn how the needs and challenges of five communities are being dealt with. These communities goals are to develop programs, while increasing trust between local people and police. What might work in your neighborhood? There’s a place for visitors to share their thoughts.
The Training Simulator
Those aged 12 and older can try the same training scenarios (方案) and equipment used in professional law enforcement classes in which police try to resolve difficult situations. Short videos test participants’ abilities to observe accurately and think quickly before reacting.
The exercises give an understanding of what officers face on a daily basis.
“Many kids first think it’s like a video game,” said Alan Davis, an educator and New York police officer. “They soon realize that real-life decision-making in a second isn’t easy, and they freeze. For real police there are no second chances.”
1. Which exhibit focuses on police dogs?
A. K-9 Units. B. Five Communities.
C. The Training Simulator. D. The Web of Law Enforcement.
2. What does The Web of Law Enforcement show?
A. The problems in communities. B. The dangers of being a police officer.
C. How teamwork matters in solving a case. D. How a policeman makes a decision instantly.
3. How may kids feel about the short video tests after taking part in them?
A. They are surprising. B. They are difficult to understand.
C. They are the same as video games. D. They are not real-life experiences at all.

Dr. Joseph Dituri, who is 55 and known as “Dr. Deep Sea”, has just finished an amazing adventure. For 100 days, the University of South Florida scientist lived in a small room underwater. He set a new world record, beating the old record of 73 days.
The farther you go below the ocean’s surface, the greater the pressure. The mission, known as Project Neptune 100, was a scientific attempt to study the effects of living in a high-pressure environment for a continuous period. In his undersea room, Dr. Dituri was living with pressure that was about 66% greater than the pressure on the surface. He believed that high pressure could help people live longer and stay healthier as they get older and that it could also help doctors treat different medical problems, including brain injuries.
Actually, Dr. Dituri went through several big changes. For one thing, he became 1.3 centimeters shorter during his time at the higher pressure undersea. He was also able to sleep much better. His physical conditions greatly improved in a couple of other ways, too.
While he was living underwater, Dr. Dituri stayed busy. He used the project as an educational experience for the youth. “I have communicated with thousands of young people to get them interested in science, technology, engineering and math,” he said. He had online chats with over 5,500 students from 15 different countries. Meanwhile, he kept teaching his college classes and worked with other marine experts to figure out ways to protect and take care of the ocean.
Dr. Dituri said his favorite part of the project was talking with young people. “If we can get people excited about science, that would be a great success to me!” he said. “Maybe one day, one of them will come back and break the record I just set. My greatest hope is that I can inspire a new generation of researchers to push back the boundaries.”
4. Why did Dr. Dituri have the adventure?
A. To learn how human bodies respond to high pressure.
B. To research the underwater life better.
C. To draw attention to a healthy lifestyle.
D. To beat the previous world record.
5. What happened to Dr. Dituri?
A. His state of health stabilized. B. He was forced to live a busy life.
C. His height changed slightly. D. He suffered from sleep problems.
6. What does Dr. Dituri want to inspire young people to do through the project?
A. Develop enthusiasm for science. B. Challenge themselves bravely.
C. Expand scientific boundaries. D. Protect the ocean actively.
7. How can we describe Dr. Dituri?
A. He is high-powered and caring. B. He is determined and inspiring.
C. He is open-minded and insightful. D. He is committed and optimistic.

A group of scientists from the University of Kitakyushu in Japan has come up with an unusual solution to a messy problem. They’ve taken dirty diapers (尿布), and used them to replace some of the sand needed to build a house with concrete.
Concrete is one of the most common building materials in the world. It’s used to construct many things, including roads, sidewalks, and buildings. Concrete is usually made by mixing together sand, water, and cement (水泥). But making concrete creates a lot of pollution. And it uses a lot of sand. Mining for sand creates other problems for the environment. Siswanti Zuraida had an unusual idea. What if some of the sand in concrete could be replaced with used disposable diapers, which are frequently abandoned?
In the US alone, over 8 billion pounds of them are cast aside each year. These end up taking up space in landfills. In some countries, dirty diapers can wind up in rivers and creeks. One 2018 study showed that bad diapers made up more than 20% of the trash pulled from waterways in 15 cities of Indonesia.
So Ms. Zuraida and her team set out to study the problem. They collected used diapers, cleaned them up, and treated the diapers with chemicals to get rid of any bad germs. Then the diapers were dried and torn into small pieces that could be added to concrete.
Overall, diapers could replace up to 8% of the sand used in the concrete needed to build a house. In the parts of a house that support a lot of weight, 10% of the sand could be replaced with shredded diapers. Ms. Zuraida and her team are excited about their results, but they realize there’s still a lot of work to be done. If diapers are really going to be used in concrete, someone will have to figure out how to safely collect, clean, and store lots and lots of used diapers. Perhaps the biggest challenge will be persuading people to use concrete made with diapers. What do you think? Is it time to change the house?
8. What does the underlined word “disposable” in paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. Dried. B. Plastic. C. Throwaway. D. Unpleasant.
9. Why does the author list the figures in paragraph 3?
A. To prove the study is trustworthy. B. To recommend scientists to seek key solutions.
C. To show diapers are a huge source of pollution. D. To blame the governments for ignoring pollution.
10. What is the biggest challenge according to Zuraida?
A. Collecting and storing large quantities of used diapers. B. Figuring out shares of diapers in concrete.
C. Calculating the percentage of diapers in sand. D. Making people accept concrete with diapers.
11. What is the best title for the text?
A. Diapers Will Replace Sand B. A Solution Shocks the Public
C. Handle Diapers Effectively D. Build a House with Diapers
【答案】8. C 9. C 10. D 11. D

Why does social media cause feelings of loneliness and lack of confidence? Because instead of being real life, it is impression management, a way of marketing yourself, carefully choosing and filtering (过滤) the picture and words to put your best face forward.
Online “friends” made through social media do not follow the normal psychological progression of friendship. You share neither physical time nor emotional conversations over the Internet. You simply communicate photographs and catchy posts to a diverse group of people whom you have “friended” or “followed” based on an accidental interaction. This is not to say that your social media friends can’t be real friends. They absolutely can, but the two are not the same. Generally speaking, there are no unfiltered or casually taken photos on our social media pages because it wouldn’t feel safe to be completely authentic (真实的) and vulnerable (易受伤的) with some of our “friends” whom we don’t actually know or with whom trust has yet to be built.
Social media can certainly be an escape from the daily routines, but we must be cautious about the negative effects on a person’s overal psychological well-being.
As humans, we are eager for social connection. Scrolling (滚动) through pages of pictures and comments, however, does not provide the same degree of fulfillment as face-to-face interactions do. Also, we tend to idealize others’ lives and compare our downfalls to their greatest accomplishments, ending in feelings of loneliness and lack of confidence.
Social media can lead to unhealthy pursuit for perfection. Some people begin to attend certain events or travel to different places so that they can snap that “perfect” photo. However, pictures and posts should be byproducts of life’s treasured moments and fun times, not the planned and calculated image that one is putting out into cyberspace in an attempt to fill insecurities or unmet needs.
Ultimately, social media has increased our ability to connect with various types of people all over the globe. It has opened doors for business and allowed us to stay connected to people whom we may not otherwise get to follow. However, social media should feel like a fun experience, not one that contributes to negative thoughts and feelings. If the latter is the case, increasing face to face time with trusted friends and minimizing time scrolling online will prove to be a reminder that your real social network is much more rewarding than any “like”, “follow” or “share” can be.
12. How does social media affect our life?
A. It may improve our physical appearance.
B. It may make us feel isolated and insecure.
C. It may filter our negative impressions on others.
D. It may enhance our communication skills.
13. Why do people post photos selectively on social media?
A. They do not want to lose their followers.
B. They are eager to become famous overnight.
C. They do not find all their online friends trustworthy.
D. They want to avoid offending any of their audience.
14. What do humans tend to do according to the passage?
A. Have more face-to-face interactions.
B. Exaggerate their life’s accomplishments.
C Learn lessons from other people’s downfalls.
D. Paint a rosy picture of other people’s lives.
15. What does the author advise when online experience becomes unpleasant?
A. Stay connected to online friends for suggestions.
B. Strengthen ties with real-life friends instead of online friends.
C. Connect with various types of people all over the globe.
D. Avoid negative thoughts and feelings through online pages.
【答案】12. B 13. C 14. D 15. B

【答案】范文
Should Kids Be Paid for Doing Housework?
Some people think kids should be paid for doing housework. They believe it can motivate children and teach them the value of money.
However, I firmly believe that kids shouldn’t be paid for doing housework. First of all, doing housework is a part of family responsibility. It helps children learn to care for the family and develop a sense of duty. Secondly, family members should support and help each other out of love and a sense of belonging, not for financial rewards.
In conclusion while there are pros and cons to both viewpoints, I think that instilling the right values and a sense of responsibility within the family context is more important than monetary compensation.

I was helping my mother in the kitchen when I heard a terrible noise struck from above. I rushed to the upper floor to check out. There was nothing but a wet footprint on the floor.
“What’s happening?” my mother asked.
“Nothing, just the sound of lightning.” I knew something strange had happened, but I ignored it as my mother was suffering a cardiac (心脏的) disease. “We’d better close the windows. Maybe rain will pour down,” I showed a relaxing expression but thought back about that footprint. It was so familiar, but I could not remember where I had seen it.
“David, can you help me take the cooking pot in the attic (阁楼)?” my mother requested. “Oh, please! I am afraid of the dark,” I answered.
My mother said that I was like my father. Oh, you want to know what happened to my father? He was an engineer. Last month, he went to the oil platform in the middle of the sea at Jerteh, Terengganu. He said he went there for only 4 days. But 2 weeks had passed, and he still didn’t come back. My mother called the management office in Jerteh but was told they hadn’t seen him since they last saw him on his way to the seashore from the oil platform.
Speaking of my father, my mother looked sad. “Today was our Anniversary Day, but he was missing.”
But back to the main point. I investigated the footprint in my room. And when I looked up, the window was opened. I walked towards it and looked out. Nothing. I closed the window and lay down on my bed. “Ouch! What is this?” I asked myself.
There was a small box on my bed. I wondered what was inside it. I opened the brown box. There was a necklace, made of pure gold. Why was there a gold necklace in my room?
Suddenly, my room became dark. My terrible fear towards the darkness was to the limit. I grabbed a flashlight and turned it on.

【答案】Just at that time, the house bell rang. My mother asked me to open the door to check out who was coming. To be a good son, I braved myself to open the door. I paced to the door and opened it. By the light of the flashlight, I could see a tall creature standing in front of my house door. When I took a good look at the figure, I found out that was the man I knew. He was my father! I was wild with joy. “Dad! Is it you? Is this a dream?”
I shouted excitedly, and called my mum down. She was shocked and nearly fainted when she saw my father. “Actually, I planned this thing with the workers in the management office. I knew that your mother would call them, and my plan to be back on our Anniversary Day came true,” said my father. He asked me to fetch the gold necklace he left accidentally in my room when he intended to check if we were home. Then, he handed it to my mum with both of his hands. “Happy Anniversary Day, my dear!” my father said to my mother. My mother couldn’t help crying, giving my dad a big hug.

A The problems in communities.
B

C. Learn lessons from other people’s downfalls.

第二节 (满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
There was a necklace made of pure gold. Why was there a gold necklace in my room?
Suddenly, my room became dark. My terrible fear towards the darkness was to the limit. I grabbed a flashlight and turned it on.
