Jennifer Hill, a 39-year-old mother of three, was at home preparing dinner for 6-year-old Quinn and her younger brother when she suddenly became out of control.
Remembering what happened, Jennifer told GMA, “Quinn told me that I actually sat down in the chair that I’m sitting in right now and I looked up at the ceiling and started breathing strangely. She said that I then fell out of the chair onto my left side and my fists were grasped, and my body was convulsing (抽搐). My eyes were open, and she kept saying, ‘Mommy, Mommy,’ but I would not respond.”
Realizing the enormity of the situation, Quinn sprang into action. She made a natural decision to take her 3-year-old brother and seek help from neighbours.
“This is the first time that they’ve ever left our home without us,” Jennifer explained. “She even told us that she looked both ways before crossing the street. But they went to one neighbour’s home and they were not home, and after that, they went to the next home that they knew. And that neighbour was in and responded to the children.”
The neighbour quickly called 911, and Jennifer was rushed to Catawba Valley Medical Centre in Hickory, North Carolina. Doctors determined that she had experienced a grand mal seizure (癫痫大发作), her first seizure ever.
Mayor (市长) Kyle J. Hayman of Conover, North Carolina, recognized Quinn’s bravery and declared February 5 as “Quinn Hill Day”. The mayor presented the first grader with a certificate of recognition during a city council (议会) ceremony last Monday.
“This young lady had the ability to recognize the emergency (紧急情况), take her younger brother by the hand, leave her home, and seek help from neighbours she knew and trusted,” Mayor Hayman praised Quinn for her quick response.
Jennifer Hill expressed great pride in her daughter’s actions. “Proud is an understatement, honestly. She’s my angel. She’s my hero for what she did,” she said.

Tens of millions of bees are likely being killed each day by vehicles in the western United States, a new study finds. The paper published in Sustainable Environment is the first to show how cars may be causing the loss of bees. Bees are important because they help pollinate (传粉) wild plants and a third of the world’s crops.
Scientists have studied the “insect disaster” by counting dead insects along roadsides. Most studies have focused on forests and larger insects. But bee diversity (多样性) is greatest in dry, open areas, and most bees are tiny — just 2 to 25 millimeters long.
A research team from Utah State University studied bee deaths by driving on highways, paved roads, and unpaved roads during the day when bees are active. They made 29 trips around Utah in spring and summer, traveling more than 9,334 kilometers, and identified bees that were hit by cars. Every trip resulted in at least one bee death, and they found 14 different species.
The researchers guessed that one car driving between Salt Lake City and Moab might kill 50 to 175 bees. Based on traffic data, that means several million bees are killed when 94,000 cars travel that route each day. Millions of cars run in Utah daily, and similar trips happen in nearby states, so the total number of bees killed each day in the region is likely in the tens of millions.
Although the numbers are based on simple assumptions, they are still important. There are ways to reduce these deaths. Research has shown that bees usually avoid crossing roads unless there are plants in the middle. So, creating healthy habitat along both sides of a road, but not in the middle, could help.
8. What is paragraph 2 mainly about?
A. Limitations on such studies. B. The influence of climate on bees.
C. Living areas of various bees. D. Scientists’ efforts to study diversity.
9. How does the author mainly develop paragraph 3 and paragraph 4?
A. By presenting examples. B. By listing related numbers.
C. By making a comparison. D. By providing cause and effect.
10. Which is one way to prevent bees from being killed?
A. Raising drivers’ awareness. B. Placing flowers in the middle.
C. Growing plants on roadsides. D. Leaving more space available.
11. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?
A. To explain the bee’s diversity. B. To remind readers to drive less.
C. To introduce the danger to bees. D. To ask people to grow more flowers.
A 9. B 10. C 11. C
根据第二段中“Most studies have focused on forests and larger insects. But bee diversity (多样性) is greatest in dry, open areas, and most bees are tiny — just 2 to 25 millimeters long. (大多数研究都集中在森林和较大的昆虫上。但蜜蜂的多样性在干燥、开阔的地区是最大的,而且大多数蜜蜂都很小,只有2到25毫米长)”可知,这段主要讨论了过去这类研究的局限性,因为聚焦森林和较大的昆虫它们没有关注到蜜蜂。故选A项。
根据第三段中的“They made 29 trips around Utah in spring and summer, traveling more than 9,334 kilometers, and identified bees that were hit by cars. Every trip resulted in at least one bee death, and they found 14 different species. (他们在春季和夏季在犹他州进行了29次旅行,行程超过9334公里,并确定了被汽车撞到的蜜蜂。每次旅行至少导致一只蜜蜂死亡,他们发现了14种不同的蜜蜂)”可知,第三段列举了相关数据,说明蜜蜂被汽车撞到的情况,结合第四段中的“The researchers guessed that one car driving between Salt Lake City and Moab might kill 50 to 175 bees. Based on traffic data, that means several million bees are killed when 94,000 cars travel that route each day. Millions of cars run in Utah daily, and similar trips happen in nearby states, so the total number of bees killed each day in the region is likely in the tens of millions.
根据最后一段中“Research has shown that bees usually avoid crossing roads unless there are plants in the middle. So, creating healthy habitat along both sides of a road, but not in the middle, could help. (研究表明,蜜蜂通常避免过马路,除非中间有植物。因此,在道路两侧创造健康的栖息地,而不是在道路中间,可能会有所帮助)”可知,防止蜜蜂被杀死的一种方法是在路边种植植物。故选C项。
【11题详解】
推理判断题。通读全文,尤其是第一段中“Tens of millions of bees are likely being killed each day by vehicles in the western United States, a new study finds. (一项新的研究发现,在美国西部,每天可能有数千万只蜜蜂被车辆杀死)”以及下文分析的蜜蜂被车辆杀死的数据情况可知,文章通过研究结果和具体数据说明了每天可能有大量蜜蜂因车辆撞击而死亡,并提出了减少蜜蜂死亡的建议。由此推知,文章的主要目的是介绍蜜蜂面临的危险,即车辆对蜜蜂的威胁。故选C项。
D
Climate change is leading to a large number of extreme weather events in places like the Horn of Africa, where deadly floods and the worst drought hit in decades. In addition, traditional weather forecast (预报) models in sub-Saharan Africa often aren’t dependable enough to forecast extreme weather events correctly in advance, leaving the areas at risk. Based on the facts, correct and timely forecasts are important to safeguard lives and livelihoods.
Climate scientists are building artificial intelligence (AI) into the traditional weather forecasting method in East Africa to improve the accuracy (准确度) of extreme weather forecasts. “We start from the traditional forecasts and add the AI model over it to make up for what the traditional forecasts have missed, so that the final forecast results can more accurately match the data that has actually been observed (观察),” explains Shruti Nath, a climate scientist and researcher at the University of Oxford Department of Physics.
According to Shruti Nath, this model, which only requires a notebook computer to run, without the need for expensive supercomputers, gives local meteorological (气象的) organizations a less expensive way of making more accurate forecasts in an area where there is a shortage of accurate observational data. The researchers say the project could change early warning systems in East Africa, making the area get better prepared for the extreme weather caused by climate change.
The model is being used in Kenya and Ethiopia now. If successful in East Africa, researchers hope to use it in other parts of the world facing similar challenges. More countries are trying to spread the technology as well as build local ownership and trust.
12. What does the author want to stress in the first paragraph?
A. The necessity of using the new weather forecast model.
B. The great climate changes caused by human activities.
C. The seriousness of the flood and drought in Africa.
D. The little progress made in weather forecasts.
13. How does the new weather forecast model work?
A. It needs much less observational data. B. It uses supercomputers to deal with data.
C. It joins AI and the traditional method together. D. It depends on AI instead of the former way.
14. What can we say about the new weather forecast model?
A. It runs easily. B. It is low-cost.
C. It doesn’t work as wished. D. It is geographically limited.
15. What can be the most suitable title for the text?
A. Climate Change and Its Effects on Africa
B. Uncertainty of Weather Forecast with AI
C. AI Helping Improve Weather Forecast
D. The Challenges of Traditional Weather Forecast Model
A 13. C 14. B 15. C

Little Tom lived with his poor grandmother Donna in a village. Every day, Tom sold potatoes grown by Donna in a market.
One day, an old foreigner aroused Tom’s curiosity. He frequently visited Tom’s stall (摊位) but didn’t buy. The next day, the man passed from one vendor (小贩) to the next, waving a bag around. But he didn’t visit Tom’s stall that day. Out of curiosity, Tom asked a vendor nearby to temporarily look after his stall. Then, he followed the foreigner.
The man went back to his broken-down house near the market and took several old medals from his bag. “Wow!” Tom said. “I won them in my own country,” the man said proudly, then asking why Tom came here. Tom explained, “I’m wondering why you didn’t visit my stall today.” “Oh, I don’t need potatoes. I need firewood, so I walked around the market looking for someone who would buy these medals and give me money in exchange,” he lied.
Tom left and brought back many potatoes from his stall, saying, “If you don’t have money, you can’t buy food. Keep my grandma’s potatoes.” But the man insisted he had enough food. Tom went back, upset; he could see the man was hungry and weak.
The third day, the man reached the market, selling medals again. He valued them, which were his honors. But after a disaster, now he had to sell them to survive. He looked weaker. Tom packed some potatoes, walking towards him again. From his conversations with vendors, Tom found him trying to sell medals for food! But no one believed his medals were true.
Disappointed, the man sat alone by the roadside. Tom approached him, saying, “I saw it! Why didn’t you let me help you?” Almost crying, he said, “I’m sorry, but I was too embarrassed to ask for your help. Now could you give me your potatoes in exchange for the medals?”

To his surprise, Donna said, “I’m so proud of you.”
“But Tom, the medals are valuable to the man. We should give them back,” added Donna. Tom agreed right away. The next day, they visited Conner and returned the medals. So touched, Conner thanked them again and again. After that day, vendors in the market heard about Tom’s acts of kindness, and they also offered to help Conner out. Tom was happy that a small act of his own helped someone in need and inspired kindness in others.
