Yet no matter the shape of my 9 to 5, one thing remains constant: emails. About a year ago, I found my email-checking habit had become more distracting than usual. When working on my computer, I found myself nervously checking my phone for unread emails whenever hitting a mental block. Even worse, during lunch or walks, that habit of checking would come with me, making my breaks an extension of the workday. The little red dot on my Gmail app had become a marker of my professional worth: the more unread emails, the more I felt I was failing. By quickly responding to everyone, I convinced myself I was seen as reliable by my paymasters and therefore worthy of the work I needed to pay my electricity bills, so I could charge my phone, read my emails and carry on the endless cycle. However, speed doesn’t always mean quality. I was always contactable — but at what cost? I took on too much work, not allowing myself space to reflect on the value of my work. The content machine kept running and I was busy, producing “word salad” onto the internet. Something needed to change. After a particularly crazy week of nonstop emailing, I deleted the email app. The difference was immediately noticeable. I began to rest better. Now, my workdays remain unpredictable, but I’ve realized that a lack of structure needn’t stop me setting boundaries for myself. Uninterrupted breaks help me focus when I get back to work. Taking a few hours to respond to messages — instead of just minutes — often makes no difference to the sender and allows me to digest the content properly. I am still surviving as a freelancer in a fast-paced industry, but now I can spend my time endlessly checking my phone for Instagram stories instead. 24. How did the email-checking habit affect the author? A. It caused him mental disorder. B. It made his breaks less relaxing. C. It kept him extremely impatient. D. It changed the structure of his workday. 25. Why did the author feel the need to respond to emails quickly? A. He wanted to avoid long working hours. B. He sought high pay to cover electricity bills. C. He desired to maintain a professional image. D. He believed multitasking ensured employment. 26. What does the author imply by mentioning “word salad” in paragraph 4? A. He was far from productive. B. He valued quality over quantity. C. His work was creative and tasteful. D. His work lacked meaningful content. 27. What does the author learn after deleting the email app? A. Email senders prefer thoughtful replies. B. Social media now plays a bigger role than email. C. Setting boundaries can improve work efficiency. D. Freelancers should get used to a fast-paced lifestyle. 第 页 共 10页 5 C Artificial intelligence — or AI — is the computer code that allows a machine to do something that normally requires a human brain. On TikTok, for instance, AI sorts the posts so that the first ones you see are likely to be those you’d prefer. But before an AI can do any of that, developers must train it. While a small percentage of AI systems are trained using low-emission sources such as solar, hydro, or nuclear power, the overwhelming majority still depend on the conventional energy mix supplied by national grids. In many parts of the world, that energy mix leads to significant carbon emissions, prompting growing concerns over the environmental footprint of energy-hungry AI models. Language-processing AI systems develop their abilities by devouring large collections of written content, which may include everything from online articles to digitized books in multiple languages. Training them takes extended time and constant system activity, often depending on powerful machines running without interruption. To translate between English and Chinese, for example, an AI model may deal with millions or even billions of translated books and articles. In this way, it learns which words and phrases match. Later, when given a new text, it recommends its own translation. To compare how different activities affect the climate, researchers often combine the impacts of all greenhouse gases into what they call CO2 equivalents. In 2019, researchers calculated the impact of developing an AI model named Transformer. It released a whopping 626, 000 pounds of carbon dioxide equivalents. That’s equal to the greenhouse gases that would be poured by five American cars from when they were made to when they were junked. Today, most AI development happens at data centers. These computer-filled buildings account for some 2 percent US electricity use and 1 percent of global energy use. As AI models grow larger and more computationally demanding, these figures are expected to rise. Some experts have sounded the alarm, warning that the unchecked energy appetite of such systems may soon pose a significant threat to global sustainability efforts. With rising energy demands, AI’s expansion signals more than just innovation — where it leads remains uncertain. 28. What is AI training mainly energized by? A. Fossil fuels. B. Clean resources. C. Nuclear energy. D. Greenhouse gases. 29. What do we know about the language-processing AI systems? A. They skip digitalized materials. B. They are domain-specific. C. They may outperform human translators. D. They are energy-intensive. 30. Why does the author mention Transformer in paragraph 4? A. To suggest AI emissions match those from big polluters. B. To explain how AI handles language in training sessions. C. To show AI is possibly outpacing traditional industries. D. To stress the environmental cost of AI development. 第 页 共 10页 6 31. What does the author imply in the last paragraph? A. AI’s expansion may overwhelm data center systems. B. The energy footprint of AI deserves close attention. C. AI’s development raises social and moral concerns. D. Cutting AI-related emissions calls for public efforts. D The burning of coal may be falling out of favor as a means of generating heat and electricity, but that doesn’t mean it no longer has valuable uses. The team of King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) is using coal for a new economy. The project is led by Associate Professor Andrea Fratalocchi. While reading about challenges of phasing out the use of coal in power generation, Fratalocchi was struck by a novel possible use for coal. “Why don’t we use coal for seawater desalination (脱盐)?” Fratalocchi recalls, still excited. Capable of taking in sunlight, the black mineral adds to the list of substances in dark colors serving the purpose, which has remained a long-standing focus of the team’s efforts. Fratalocchi and his team began to explore the use of a material known as carbonized compressed powder (压缩粉末), also CCP, which is created by breaking coal into powder, and then pressing that powder back into a solid that has more tiny holes—it can also be made into a desired shape. The team mixed CCP with natural cotton fibers, producing a block which was then placed within a seawater-containing container, with its bottom touching water surface. While sunlight heated the black surface of the block, water was progressively absorbed and conveyed through the device, facilitated by added materials embedded during its formation. When that liquid water reached the hot surface, it turned into steam which rose and condensed (冷凝) on the inside of a specially shaped cover. That condensation then flew down the cover and was collected as fresh, drinkable water. The seawater’s salt content remained behind within the CCP. A simple wash was enough to remove most of it, so the material could be reused multiple times. KAUST has partnered with the Dutch start-up PERA Complexity to promote the technology. The material will see its first use in a pilot plant in Brazil. “CCP is abundant in nature and reasonable to use, besides being lightweight,” says team member Marcella Bonifazi. “The device’s desalination rate per unit of raw material is two to three times higher than that of any other solar desalination system, but it produces fresh water at around one-third the expense of current state- of-the-art technologies.” 32. What has Fratalocchi’s team been seeking for? A. Fibers functioning well with CCP. B. Green ways to desalinate seawater. C. New industrial applications of coal. D. Dark-colored materials for desalination. 33. How did the seawater get into the CCP block? A. Through the tiny holes. B. Through CCP. C. Through cotton fibers. D. Through a special cover. 34. Which feature of CCP does Marcella Bonifazi stress? 第 页 共 10页 7 A. Being eco-friendly. B. Being low-cost. C. Being widely used. D. Being technologically advanced. 35. What does the text mainly talk about? A. Drinkable water will be got from the sea. B. A new coal-based material is entering practical use. C. Coal finds new use in desalination technology. D. Scientists have made a breakthrough in desalination. 第二节 (共 5 小题;每小题 2.5 分,满分 12.5 分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的七个选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项 为多余选项。 Imagine you’ve been working for hours before a deadline, but you feel like you’re getting nowhere. You’re starting to feel really anxious. At this point, you might start to blame yourself for having this emotion. Now you have two emotions: feeling anxious about getting work done and feeling frustrated that you are anxious. When the second emotion gets layered on top of the first emotion, you often feel worse and are even less likely to reach your goals. You may now be wondering if it is possible to make the second emotion less likely. ___36 ___ Many people have heard of “mindfulness”. It is often associated with doing a meditation (冥 想) practice, but its essence is to be more aware and accepting of your present-moment experience. ___37 ___Acceptance can limit judgmental thoughts and unhelpful secondary emotions. Let me explain. Picture yourself in a challenging situation like the scenario described above and you feel anxiety arising. Instead of getting upset at yourself for having this emotion, you bring your awareness to the experience of the emotion and accept it. You might feel that this anxiety is not fun to experience. ___38 ___With this attitude of acceptance, and stepping away from the tendency to fight against the emotion, you are less likely to get stuck in a loop of judgmental thoughts that might trigger more unwanted emotions. ___39 ___But evidence suggests that it works. That is probably because accepting yourselves, including your emotions, relieves pressure. You stop adding fuel to the emotional fire when you release judgmental thoughts about your emotions. ___40 ___ For instance, you could turn down the volume on the initial emotion, perhaps by seeing the situation from a new perspective or asking someone for support. A. Thankfully, research suggests that the answer is yes. B. You can’t be productive even when you have more inner space. C. Then you may question if you are feeling anxious about getting work done. D. Yet you know you can breathe it through and that it is just a passing emotion. E. Sometimes the experience includes an unpleasant emotion you don’t want to feel. F. It might sound unreasonable that embracing an unpleasant emotion can be a good thing. G. You also create more inner space to determine whether you can do something that helps. Ding dong! The rocket competition would begin shortly. Every detail mattered, and he was determined not to overlook a single one. The pressure was huge, but Tom was accustomed to being on top. He had never tasted defeat, and he wasn’t about to start now. The other children rarely approached him, and when they did, it felt forced. Tom preferred to keep to himself, confident in his ability to win yet again. He assembled (组装) his launch platform with great care, sorting through engines, igniters (点火器), and other tools in his toolbox. Suddenly, his igniter wire slipped from his grasp and disappeared into the grass. In a panic, he found another and carefully fitted it into place. Tom checked his rocket again. It was perfect, but when he glanced at the others’ rockets, he found lots of problems immediately. One rocket, however, had the look of a winner. And Tom’s heart sank. A thin boy carried it carefully. “Hi,” a voice interrupted his focus. It was the thin boy, Ed, offering a nervous smile, “Nice rocket.” Tom whispered thanks, eyes on his tools. He asked Ed where he tested his rockets because he had never seen him at the competitions before. Ed said he just practiced alone behind his house. Although Tom felt a bit nervous, he pretended not to care much about the contest. “Good luck,” said Tom, and he continued to concentrate on his own rocket. As Ed lifted his rocket, Tom felt an increasing anxiety. Just then, he noticed a fin (尾翼) on Ed’s rocket had loosened. But Ed hadn’t noticed it. Tom felt a bit sorry but decided not to say anything. As Ed’s turn approached, Tom’s heart jumped. He had to speak up, despite the risk of losing. “Ed, hold up!” he shouted, drawing the attention of the crowd. 注意: 1.续写词数应为 150 左右; 2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。 Ed stopped, turned around and looked at Tom confusedly. Tom felt the pain of defeat but also a sense of pride. 英语答案 第一部分 听力(共两节,满分 30 分) 1-5 BAACB 6-10 ACBCA 11-15 BAABC 16-20 BCAAC 第二部分 阅读理解 (共两节,满分 50 分) 21-23 ACC 24-27 BCDC 28-31 ADDB 32-35 DCBC 36-40 AEDFG 第三部分 语言运用(共三节,满分 30 分) 第一节(共 15 小题;每小题 1 分,满分 15 分) 41-45 ADCCA 46-50 DABCA 51-55 DDBDB 第二节 语法填空(共 10 小题;每小题 1 分,满分 10 分) 56. an 57. practiced 58. that 59. promotes 60. inclusion 61. at 62. why 63. ending 64. geographically 65. have been passed 第四部分 写作(共两节,满分 40分) 第一节 应用文(满分 15分) A possible version: Beauty Meets Art Festival Last Saturday, our school hosted an Art Festival with the theme “Feel Beauty, Create Beauty.” Students participated in exhibitions, live performances, and hands-on workshops, presenting their creativity in diverse forms. Blending grace with cultural richness, the hanfu runway show became a highlight of the event. With flowing robes and elegant gestures set against soft classical music, the show vividly brought traditional Chinese aesthetics to life, leaving a lasting impression on the audience. Widely praised by both teachers and students, the festival not only showcased artistic expression, but also demonstrated how beauty can be felt, shared, and brought to life through art—turning every moment of art into a spark that nurtures a lifelong love for beauty. 第二节 读后续写(满分 25分) A possible version: Ed stopped, turned around and looked at Tom confusedly. Tom pointed to the loose fin and said softly, “It might come off.” Ed quickly tightened it and launched his rocket just in time. It soared into the air in a smooth, perfect arc, drawing cheers from the crowd. Tom watched silently, his heart caught between disappointment and quiet pride. He had given up his edge— but it felt right. When his turn came, he stepped up and released his own rocket. It flew high, steady, and strong, but still fell short of Ed’s. As Tom began to pack up, he caught sight of Ed making his way through the crowd, a look of gratitude in his eyes. Tom felt the pain of defeat but also a sense of pride. He had chosen fairness over winning, and that meant more than any medal. As he zipped up his toolbox, Ed walked over and thanked him with a quiet smile. For a moment, they stood there—not as rivals, but as teammates in spirit. Then something unexpected happened: the other kids approached, their once-distant expressions replaced by warmth. They invited Tom to Ed’s house to share designs and build rockets together. He nodded, surprised but pleased. In that moment, Tom discovered a new kind of victory—one built on respect, connection, and the joy of building, not just rockets, but friendships too. Text 1 M: Hey, Ruth. How was your weekend? W: Oh, I attended a screening of The Garfield Movie. How about you? Did you win the game this time? I heard the competition was fierce. M: It’s a long story. Our football goalkeeper broke his arm in the second half. The coach took him to the hospital. Text 2 W: We are bound to miss our flight if we don’t leave now. M: Don’t you remember that we’ve put it off until Wednesday? W: Oops, I totally forgot. Then we’ll have a whole day doing the cleaning tomorrow. M: Yes. Text 3 W: I’m pretty sure that something did happen. I saw a large crowd gathering near the park. M: There is a donation of books. By the way, just now a lot of police cars passed by our restaurant. Do you know what happened? W: It’s said that a bank manager ran away with all the money. Text 4 M: From the look on your face, I’m guessing you haven’t got used to life on the farm yet. W: I’ve been bitten by a lot of mosquitoes. I can’t help scratching myself at night. Plus, I’m afraid of snakes. Worst of all, I can’t stand the heat. Text 5 M: I think we might have given the cat too many biscuits. She has been throwing up all the time. W: We’d better take her to see a vet right now. She is too weak. M: But our car is being fixed and the vet’s may be closed now. Text 6 M: What is that strange smell? Did you take the trash out? W: Yeah. Oh, it is the gas. I’ll open the windows and let fresh air come in. Can you turn off the gas? M: But I looked everywhere. There’s no gas leak. Then it must come from Mr. Thompson’s. Mr. Thompson went to Australia for sightseeing. Did he return? W: He came home a quarter of an hour earlier than you. When you got back home, the clock had just struck six. It’s 6:30 p.m. now. Hurry up, let’s knock on his door. M: We need to grab wet towels and cover our noses in case of an accident. Text 7 W: When I was a kid, my parents often encouraged me to have a big dream of being a pianist in a band. Whereas, this wasn’t where my ambition lay. My desire was to show off my beautiful voice on stage. I often whistled a cheerful tune. Did you have any childhood dreams? M: I was curious about outer space and wanted to fly to the moon. W: A big dream. When people are in their childhood, their dreams are likely to be based on pure passion and imagination. However, before entering the workforce, these youthful perspectives begin to shift. M: Yeah. Children rarely consider financial limitations and educational requirements when deciding on their future. W: Your dream has come true. For me, I will put more effort into my present dream—creating more musical pieces. M: Agreed. We might not be able to change our past, but we can create our future. Text 8 M: Hi, Marie. What are you doing now? Today is Saturday. W: Yes. It’s also the Double Ninth Festival. Our school organized some activities. We had a field trip from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. From 10:10 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., we helped clean our canteen. From 11:30 a.m. until 1:00 p.m., we had lunch. M: So you just finished your lunch? W: Yeah. And we are on our way to buy some fruit for the old people, especially the empty nesters. I will sing a revolutionary song which is to their taste. We are scheduled to return to school at 6:00 p.m. M: Great. I believe it will remind them of the valuable moments in their life. W: Sure. We can also help them get a haircut and do some laundry.
