Mazu worship is not just inside the temple walls. Each year, a Mazu statue (神像) is carried around Meizhou Island to spread wishes of good luck. The sea goddess has also traveled overseas! In 2017, she flew to Singapore and Malaysia, and a year later, she went on a cruise ship to the Philippines. Since Mazu was a real person from history, people even gave her an ID number for buying tickets.
When Lin traveled with the Mazu statue on international journeys, he realized that the goddess has become an important connection for Chinese communities overseas. In the future, he wants to better introduce Mazu culture to the world. “Meizhou Mazu Temple works with universities for research on Mazu culture, and plans to create social media content (内容) in different languages to promote (宣传) her stories,” Lin said.

①Are your bananas turning brown too quickly? Scientists have used the technology of gene-editing (基 因 编 辑 ) to create a special banana that doesn’t turn brown as fast, The Guardian reported.
②The banana was developed by Tropic, a business in Norwich, UK. These bananas stay firm (结实的), fresh and yellow for 12 hours after being peeled. They smell and taste just as sweet as normal bananas.
③Bananas are the fourth biggest crop (庄稼) in the world. However, about 50 percent of the bananas grown are never eaten, Gilad Gershon, the head of Tropic, told The Guardian.
④Bananas turn brown due to a process called enzymatic browning (酶促褐变). A key enzyme in the process is called polyphenol oxidase (PPO, 多酚氧化酶). By “silencing” the gene that “tells” bananas to make PPO, Tropic scientists successfully slowed down the browning.
⑤Another thing that makes bananas brown is ethylene (乙烯). Ethylene is a hormone (激素) that helps fruits ripen (成熟). Bananas make a lot of ethylene by themselves. As a result, they keep ripening even after they are harvested. Other fruits near them also ripen faster.
⑥The gene-editing technology could help cut down food waste and aid the fight against hunger Gershon told The Guardian. According to the United Nations, the number of people going hungry around the world has been rising since 2014. At the same time, about 13. 2 percent of food is lost between harvest and reaching stores, and around 19 percent is wasted in homes, restaurants and stores.

C. Only the hormone ethylene. D. Neither enzymatic browning nor ethylene.
48. How did Tropic scientists slow down the browning of bananas?
A. By increasing the amount of PPO in bananas.
B. By making bananas produce more ethylene.
C. By “silencing” the gene that makes bananas produce PPO.
D. By changing the growing environment of bananas.
49. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. To show the harm of food waste.
B. To explain why bananas turn brown.
C. To introduce a new technology of growing bananas.
D. To introduce gene-edited bananas that don’t turn brown as fast.
50. Which of the following shows the structure of the passage?

From red apples and yellow lemons to blueberries and green melons, fruit comes in many different colors. ____51____
According to Lu Wei from the Chinese Academy of Sciences, fruit colors actually come from their different pigments (色素), such as red or yellow carotenoid (类胡萝卜素) and blue or purple anthocyanin (花青素). These pigments appear in different amounts, depending on where the fruit grows. ____52____
To find out how the environment affects fruit colors, Chinese scientists studied more than 280 different fruit colors, including white, red, blue, purple and black.
They found that red fruit tends (倾向) to grow in cooler places. And instead of just growing in one place, you can find them growing in many places around the world. Blue and purple fruit mostly grows in warm places. ____53____The scientists also found that the closer the fruit is to the equator, the darker its color will be.
Animals have also had an impact on the evolution (进化) of fruit colors. Animals eat fruit and drop the seeds in other places later. ____54____Therefore, in order to attract animals, some fruit develop colors that are easy for animals to see.
____55____ Fruit needs to develop colors that are suited to animals’ visual (视觉的) abilities. For example, birds can see red more easily than humans can. Therefore, there tends to be more red fruit in areas where birds live. The lemurs (狐猴) of Madagascar are red-green color-blind. Many yellow fruit can be found in their habitats (栖息地), as they can easily see this color.
A. However, animals see colors in a different way.
B. Why do different kinds of fruit have so many colors?
C. These fruits tend to grow a lot in just one specific area.
D. The environment causes the fruit to turn a certain color.
E. This helps the fruit spread and grow in different places.
F. However, a darker color doesn’t mean a better kind of fruit.

We see countless faces every day-at school, in stores and on television. But how many aces can we really recognize? For the first time, scientists from UK’s York University have an answer: about 5, 000.
The research team asked university students to recall people they were able to recognize in their everyday lives. These people included family members, friends, neighbors and famous people. By recording how the students’recall rates (频率) slowed down over time, the scientists estimated (估计) when they would run out of recognizable faces.
Scientists found that these students could recognize between 1, 000 and 10, 000 faces, with the average being 5, 000.
Scientists who do research in this area usually just focus on how the brain tells the difference between familiar and unfamiliar faces. “But we realized we were missing something if we didn’t know how many familiar faces people did recognize, ” researcher Mike Burton told the Guardian.
The ability to recognize thousands of faces is an important part of human interaction, according to the Washington Post. Imagine awkwardly (尴尬地) waving at a stranger who you thought was a friend-or much worse, being mistaken for a murderer.

In 987 AD, a woman named Lin Mo from Meizhou Island, Fujian province, lost her life at the age of 28 while trying to save fishermen. To honor her kindness, people built a temple on the island, making her a sea goddess among fishermen. This is the story of Mazu.
As an important Chinese goddess, Mazu is at the center of many beliefs and customs, including folklore (民俗) and religious (宗教的) ceremonies. In 2009, these traditions were added to UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity (联合国教科文组织人类非物质文化遗产) list. Lin Jinzan is an inheritor (传承人) of Mazu religious ceremonies. At the age of 19, he began working at the Meizhou Mazu Temple, welcoming Mazu worshippers.

The ceremony on Mazu’s birthday is around 45 minutes and has over 500 performers. During the event, 64 dancers perform an ancient ritual dance called Bayi Dance while musicians play ceremonial music using traditional Chinese instruments such as the bianzhong.
⑥The gene-editing technology could help cut down food waste and aid the fight against hunger, Gershon told The Guardian. According to the United Nations, the number of people going hungry around the world has been rising since 2014. At the same time, about 13. 2 percent of food is lost between harvest and reaching stores, and around 19 percent is wasted in homes, restaurants and stores.
46. What is special about the gene-edited bananas?
A. They are smaller than normal bananas.
B. They stay fresh and yellow for a longer time after being peeled.
C. They have a different smell and taste from normal bananas.
D. They are the fourth biggest crop in the world.
47. What causes bananas to turn brown according to the passage?
A. Only enzymatic browning. B. Both enzymatic browning and ethylene.
A. ①/②③/④⑤/⑥ B. ①②/③④⑤/⑥
C. ①②/③④/⑤⑥ D. ①/②③④/ ⑤(⑥

To find out how the environment affects fruit colors Chinese scientists studied more than 280 different fruit colors, including white, red, blue, purple and black.

Scientists found that these students could recognize between 1 000 and 10, 000 faces, with the average being 5, 000.
However, our ability to recognize faces is different for different people. It is usually harder for people to recognize others who are of a different race (种族) What’s more, about 2 percent of the population are thought to have “face blindness”, the Guardian reported. People with face blindness find it hard to notice differences in the faces of strangers. Others may even have a hard time recognizing familiar faces.
The team’s findings could be used to improve face recognition (面部识别) technology. This technology is used to identify people at airports and in police investigations (调查).
