After taking an introductory course in global health last winter, Yashaswi Bista, president of Stanford SupplyHer, was empowered to take action against malaria —a disease that has been claiming hundreds of thousands of lives every year for centuries.
Stanford SupplyHer, a student group supporting women’s health through art, hosted an event in partnership with United to Beat Malaria (UBM) to encourage funding for malaria prevention, treatment and research initiatives while tabling at White Plaza last Monday. “Knowing that malaria is especially dangerous to pregnant individuals and children makes advocacy for malaria funding and research essential for our mission,” said Bista.
“We in the U. S. need to be aware of the impact of global warming on malaria because less developed countries in other parts of the world are more heavily affected by our emissions,” Bista said. Last year, the U. S. experienced its first local outbreaks of malaria since 2003. Infectious disease experts have warned that climate change will spread malaria and other diseases carried by mosquitoes to areas that were once free of malaria.
This summer, after discovering the work of UBM, a global grassroots campaign of the UN Foundation, Bista met with her congressional (国会的) representatives to advocate for malaria treatment and research. To support continued funding for global malaria programs, Bista wrote to officials in Congress. “It’s easy for people to feel like they are powerless with issues as big as malaria. But any person can give input to their decision makers on issues as big as these,” wrote Macgan Cross, a senior advocate at UBM. “By sending messages to your elected officials in support of global health funding, you are making sure your voice is heard.”
Bista encouraged students to become involved in initiatives on campus to spread awareness of malaria and other global health issues. “Global health is important to me because there are so many health inequities (不平等) around the world and health itself is important to live a fulfilling life,” Bista said. “Because there are so many health inequities around the world, I want to raise awareness and help people live fulfilling lives.”
1. What inspired Bista to engage in actions against malaria?
A. A learning experience. B. A health crisis. C. A grassroots campaign. D. A tabling event.
2. What did Bista do to support malaria prevention?
A. She organized a charity sale. B. She launched a research project.
C. She campaigned for fundraising. D. She budgeted for malaria treatment.
3. What is the message Maegan Cross intends to convey?
A. Community voices secure health funding.
B. Malaria outbreaks are difficult to prevent.
C. The public needs more knowledge about health.
D. Individual efforts matter in government decisions.
4. Which of the following best describes Bista?
A. A health advocate. B. A club founder. C. A woman pioneer. D. A disease specialist.
A 2. C 3. D 4. A

根据文章第一段“After taking an introductory course in global health last winter, Yashaswi Bista, president of Stanford SupplyHer, was empowered to take action against malaria —a disease that has been claiming hundreds of thousands of lives every year for centuries.(去年冬天,斯坦福大学“Stanford SupplyHer”组织的主席Yashaswi Bista在修完一门全球健康入门课程后,获得了采取行动抗击疟疾的动力。疟疾这种疾病在几个世纪以来,每年都夺走数十万人的生命。)”可知,启发Bista采取行动抗击疟疾的是一次学习经历。故选A。
根据文章第二段“Stanford SupplyHer, a student group supporting women’s health through art, hosted an event in partnership with United to Beat Malaria(UBM)to encourage funding for malaria prevention, treatment and research initiatives while tabling at White Plaza last Monday.(“Stanford SupplyHer”是一个通过艺术来支持女性健康的学生团体。上周一,该团体与“联合抗击疟疾”组织合作,在怀特广场设摊举办了一场活动,旨在鼓励为疟疾的预防、治疗和研究项目提供资金支持。)”可知,Bista所在的组织与“联合抗击疟疾”组织合作举办活动,鼓励为疟疾的预防、治疗和研究项目提供资金支持。由此可知,Bista为支持疟疾预防所做的是为筹款进行宣传活动。故选C。
【3题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章第四段““It’s easy for people to feel like they are powerless with issues as big as malaria. But any person can give input to their decision makers on issues as big as these,” wrote Macgan Cross, a senior advocate at UBM. “By sending messages to your elected officials in support of global health funding, you are making sure your voice is heard.”(“联合抗击疟疾”组织的资深倡导者Macgan Cross写道:“面对像疟疾这样重大的问题,人们很容易觉得自己无能为力。
故选A。
B
After Taylor Swift, the “Mona Lisa” is probably the most recognizable female face in the world. Every day around 20,000 people stare at the Leonardo da Vinci’s painting in the Louvre. Yet it became famous not because of a tempting semi-smile. Until a worker stole the masterpiece in 1911, it was still mostly unknown; viewers flooded in to see what a French newspaper called “an enormous, horrific, gaping void (空白)”.
Classics of art, literature and music are supposed to carry some mysterious appeal that endures across the ages. But as Rochelle Gurstein, a historian, writes in a new book, the “timeless classic” is anything but. “What I believed was written in stone was actually written in water”, she argues. Classics come and go.
Take other celebrated works of art. Until the end of the 19th century Michelangelo’ s “David” had only his fig leaf to protect him from the weather in Piazza della Signoria in Florence. He attracted more pigeons than visitors; visitors preferred the artist’s sculpture of Moses in Rome. Before the famous “Venus de Milo” was discovered in 1820, viewers were crazy about “Venus de Medici”, a delicate sculpture most people alive today have never heard of.
Much as in art, the classics of music and literature have not always been set in stone either. Today, Johann Sebastjan Bach is often regarded as the master of classical music. But after his death in 1750, Bach’s compositions fell out of fashion until Felix Mendelssohn, a German composer, rediscovered them in the 1820s. Herman Melville’s masterpiece “Moby Dick” was largely forgotten until critics such as Raymond Weaver, a professor at Columbia University rescued him from the depth of a nobody around the centenary of his birth in 1919.
“The status of classics” depends on critics and shows the power of passionate writers to change the way people look at art. Tastes evolve, and they should. But culture lives on only as long as people continue to argue over what counts as a classic today. The true enemy of the classic is not relativism or awakening. It is silence.
5. What made the painting “Mona Lisa” famous?
A. The painter. B. The theft. C. The report. D. The semi-smile.
6. What does Rochelle think of classics?
A. Changeable. B. Fading. C. Enduring. D. Admirable.
7. How does the author use the examples of Bach and “Moby Dick” to support the main argument?
A. To prove that true classics never lose their value over time.
B. To suggest that only music and literature can become timeless.
C. To argue that modern audiences have better taste than past ones.
D. To show that forgotten works can regain fame through critical reevaluation.
8. What might ultimately discourage the development of classics?
A. The ignorance of culture. B. The course of time.
C. The lack of criticism. D. The evolution of tastes.
B 6. A 7. D 8. C
根据第一段中“Yet it became famous not because of a tempting semi-smile. Until a worker stole the masterpiece in 1911, it was still mostly unknown; viewers flooded in to see what a French newspaper called “an enormous, horrific, gaping void (空白)”. (然而,它之所以出名,并不是因为一个诱人的半笑。直到1911年一名工人偷走了这幅杰作,它基本上仍然不为人知;观众蜂拥而至,看到一家法国报纸所说的“一个巨大的、可怕的、裂开的空洞”。)”可知,让《蒙娜丽莎》这幅画出名的是一次工人偷窃事件。故选B。
【6题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段“But as Rochelle Gurstein, a historian, writes in a new book, the “timeless classic” is anything but. “What I believed was written in stone was actually written in water”, she argues. Classics come and go. (但正如历史学家罗谢尔•格斯坦在一本新书中所写的那样,“永恒的经典”绝非如此。“我相信写在石头上的东西实际上是写在水里的,”她说。经典作品来来去去。)”可知,罗谢尔认为经典作品是多变的。故选A。
根据第四段中“Today, Johann Sebastjan Bach is often regarded as the master of classical music.
根据最后一段““The status of classics” depends on critics and shows the power of passionate writers to change the way people look at art. Tastes evolve, and they should. But culture lives on only as long as people continue to argue over what counts as a classic today. The true enemy of the classic is not relativism or awakening. It is silence. (“经典的地位”取决于评论家,并显示了热情的作家改变人们看待艺术的方式的力量。品味在进化,也应该如此。但是,只要人们继续争论什么是今天的经典,文化就会继续存在。经典的真正敌人不是相对主义或觉醒。它是沉默。)”可知,缺乏批评可能最终阻碍经典的发展。故选C。
C
The Malagasy baobab trees, a typical feature of Madagascar's landscape, should have disappeared long ago due to the extinction of its former seed-distributing animals. However, it did not. Seheno Andriantsaralaza at the University of Antananarivo in Madagascar and Onja Razafindratsima at the University of California, Berkeley, now think they may know the reason.
Together with their colleagues, the scientists monitored 15 trees to find new baobab seed-distributing animals in a western Madagascar region. They also set up camera traps around seed-containing fruits, and searched any feces (粪便) along the way for the presence of seeds.
They report in the journal Biotropica that a native rat was caught on camera handling whole fruits on four occasions. Although there was no record of the rat breaking the fruits open, the team found 13fruits that had been chewed into and had their seeds removed. Though the bite marks were not clear enough to identify a culprit (肇事者), this was clear evidence that a seed-distributing animal was out there. They then found convincing evidence: baobab seeds in seven different piles of bush-pig feces.
The discovery is not without irony (讽刺). Scientists believe bush pigs were brought to Madagascar by humans sometime between 1,000 and 5,000 years ago, just as the former seed-distributing animals were going extinct. Their arrival was a lucky break for the baobabs, especially as scientists have determined a seed's journey through the pig-like digestive system doesn't reduce its ability to grow.
While the finding is important in its own right, it also provides valuable evidence that introduced species may not be entirely harmful. Madagascar's pigs, for example, though not native, have made themselves essential to the survival of truly native species. Similar relationships are suspected to hold in South America between rabbits native to Europe and plants with no seed distributors. For Dr.Andriantsaralaza, that suggests the full ecological role of introduced species should be considered before talk of extinction begins.
9. Why did researchers conduct the study?
A. To identify the seed carriers for baobabs.
B. To explore how baobab trees survived.
C. To study how animals distribute baobab seeds.
D. To find out if baobab trees are endangered.
10. What convinced the researchers of the real seed carrier?
A. The way a rat handled the fruits. B. The presence of chewed seeds.
C. The seeds found in animal feces. D. The marks on the baobab fruits.
11. What is the author's attitude toward humans introducing new species?
A Optimistic. B. Reflective. C. Critical. D. Neutral.
12. What is the author's purpose in mentioning rabbits?
A. To argue against introducing new species.
B. To show that rabbits benefit native species.
C. To highlight the importance of seed carriers.
D. To suggest that introduced species may help.
A 10. C 11. B 12. D

根据文章最后一段“While the finding is important in its own right, it also provides valuable evidence that introduced species may not be entirely harmful.
根据文章最后一段“While the finding is important in its own right, it also provides valuable evidence that introduced species may not be entirely harmful.Madagascar's pigs, for example, though not native, have made themselves essential to the survival of truly native species. 56. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Leaving the busy and noisy store, I hurried back to my car, my mind preoccupied with the tasks awaiting me at home. However, as I reached for my car keys in my pocket, a sinking feeling washed over me — I had locked both my keys and cell phone inside the vehicle. Frustration surged through my veins. Feeling extremely annoyed, I couldn’t help but let out a string of choice words, punctuated by a swift kick to the tire.
Just then, a teenager on his bicycle happened to pass by, his eyes catching my display of frustration. Sensing an opportunity to lend a hand, he pulled over and asked, “What’s wrong?”
I took a deep breath, grateful for a sympathetic ear, and explained my situation. “I’ve managed to lock my keys and cell phone inside the car,” I sighed. “My wife must be really worried as I should have been home by now.” “Even if I could call my wife, she wouldn’t be able to bring me her car key since this is our only vehicle.”
Without hesitation, the teenager extended his hand, offering me his cell phone. “Here, you can use mine to call your wife,” he said, his youthful voice brimming with sincerity.
I accepted his offer gratefully, dialing my wife’s number and relaying the situation to her. I could sense her concern on the other end of the line, but she remained calm and asked for my exact position.
“I’ll need to see if I can borrow any of our neighbours’ cars.” “I’ve thought about this plan, but most of them must be in town for the carnival today.” I sighed. But she just reassured me that she would find the extra key and find a way to get here as soon as possible.
As I ended the call, I expressed my gratitude to the teenager, but a new worry crept into my mind. “It’s a seven-mile trip for my wife,” I said, “even if she could borrow a car, she hasn’t driven for long and she’s pregnant.” The teenager asked, “Did you just say you live in the Medway street? My school is nearby so I’m quite familiar with the route. Just tell your wife I’m coming to get the key.” “But that’s seven miles! It’ll take you at least an hour round trip.”
注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右;
The teenager simply smiled, with a determined look on his face.

Deeply moved, I reached into my pocket, eager to offer him some money.
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
The teenager simply smiled, with a determined look on his face. “Don’t worry about it. I’ll go and bring her key myself.” I was taken aback by his selflessness. Gratitude welled up within me, and I could only manage a heartfelt “Thank you.” With that, the teenager pedaled away, his figure growing smaller in the distance. An hour passed. Filled with restless anticipation, I saw him approaching. In his outstretched hand, he held the salvation of my locked car—the spare key. Relief washed over me as I took it from him, marveling at his firm commitment to helping a stranger in need.
Deeply moved, I reached into my pocket, eager to offer him some money. But as I extended the money towards him, he shook his head, refusing any reward. “Let’s just say I needed the exercise,” he said with a mischievous grin, his eyes sparkling with youthful energy. With a nod of gratitude, I bid him farewell as he rode off into the sunset. As I drove away in my newly unlocked car, I couldn’t help but reflect on the unexpected encounter. The memory of the selfless teenager’s seven-mile journey would forever be engraved in my mind, serving as a reminder to always be ready to lend a hand to those in need.

D Individual efforts matter in government decisions.
4. Which of the following best describes Bista?
A. A health advocate. B. A club founder. C. A woman pioneer. D. A disease specialist.

A. Optimistic. B. Reflective. C. Critical. D. Neutral.
12. What is the author's purpose in mentioning rabbits?
A. To argue against introducing new species.
B. To show that rabbits benefit native species.
C. To highlight the importance of seed carriers.
D. To suggest that introduced species may help.

注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右;
