She suffered brain cancer and her health got worse despite some medical treatment. But she realized that in a way, she was luckier than some other people. She had insurance to help pay for her medical care. But Ms. McIntyre and her husband, Mr. Gregory, knew that many people with cancer face tough decisions because of the costs of medical care and wind up owing far more than they can pay. Though her health was failing, Ms. McIntyre decided to help pay off the medical debts of as many people as she possibly could. The couple began donating money to a group called RIP Medical Debt, which is committed to working to pay off the unpaid medical debts of others. The group can pay off medical bills for about 100 times less money than they cost. In other words, for every 100 donated, the group can pay off 10,000 in unpaid medical bills. Unfortunately, Ms. McIntyre passed away before long. Mr. Gregory posted a message for Ms. McIntyre on her social media accounts. “If you’re reading this, I have passed away,” the post began. Then the post explained, “To celebrate my life, I’ve arranged to buy up others’ medical debts and then des troy the debts.” The couple had set up a page on a website to raise money for this purpose. They had hoped to raise about $20,000. Nevertheless, Ms. McIntyre’s last post attracted a lot of attention. The donations on her web page quickly passed the total goal. In less than a week, the site had raised 10 times more than expected and the donations are still coming in. By November 22, 2023, Ms. McIntyre’s web page had raised over $627,000, or enough money to pay off about $60 million in medical debts. Mr. Gregory planned a special event in December to celebrate Ms. McIntyre’s life and to announce how many millions of dollars of medical debts her efforts had paid for. 24. Why did Ms. McIntyre feel luckier than some other people? A. The doctors eventually cured her. B. Her disease didn’t become worse. C. She had a decent job before being ill. D. She had security about medical care. 25. How did Ms. McIntyre and her husband help others? A. By paying for their daily debts. B. By giving away money to them. C By paying off their debts from treatments. D. By purchasing medical insurance for them. 26. What is paragraph 4 mainly about? A. The public involvement. B. The couple’s commitment. C. The operation of a website. D. The increase of medical debts. 27. Which of the following words can best describe Ms. McIntyre? A. Humorous and elegant. B. Influential and generous. C. Cautious and promising. D. Enthusiastic and adaptable. C In Georgia students will be required to build “background knowledge” by reciting all or part of significant poems and speeches. The Arkanses plan calls for students to recite a passage from a well-known poem, play or speech. That’s it: an old-fashioned demand that students memorize the Gettysburg Address or Hamlet’s “To be or not to be” or Gwendolyn Brooks’s We Real Cool and recite it to an audience. Most parents would probably call this a worthy exercise once abandoned for long, gathering the courage to speak in public and firing the adolescent imagination. Who could object to store memorable words in teenage heads otherwise packed with short videos? English teachers, that’s who. Modern educators view memorization as empty repetition, mechanical and prescriptive (规定) rather than creative or thoughtful. Reciting texts from memory, they say, merely drops information into students’ minds. It’s repetitive learning instead of critical analysis. That’s wrong. Recitation allows students to experience a text as a living thing, ready to be taken up by a new generation. Committing a poem or speech to memory means stepping into the author’s shoes and pondering what he meant. Deciding which words to stress when reciting means thinking about what those words mean. In our age of social media and artificial intelligence, the practice of recitation has never been more needed. Memorizing classic words reminds us that they are alive. Watch the faces of parents as they listen to their children urging us all toward what Martin Luther King called “a dream deeply rooted in the American dream,” or saying with Robert Frost, “I have been one acquainted with the night,” or with Shakespeare, “Tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow...” When young reciters return to their seats, they know they have made ageless words their own. What parents and students feel at that moment transcends (超越) a good grade. For a few minutes, hardworking teens become King, Frost or Shakespeare. 28. Why are educators against storing memorable words in teenage heads? A. Memorization is nothing but thoughtful learning. B. Memorization is anything but repetitive learning. C. Memorization does injure teenagers’ heads. D. Memorization does no good to critical analysis. 29. What is the author’s attitude toward recitation? A. Supportive. B. Objective. C. Opposed. D. Unclear. 30. What does the underlined word “pondering” in paragraph 4 mean? A. Learning from. B. Reflecting on. C. Bringing out. D. Arguing against. 31. How does the author stress the importance of recitation in the social media and AI times? A. By giving examples. B. By analyzing causes. C. By displaying methods. D. By listing figures. D Did you notice our planet is running a serious fever? Scientists warn that by 2035, we might cross a critical point: if global temperatures rise 2°C above pre-industrial levels, it’ll be like pressing a “fast-forward” button on disasters. Coastal cities could turn into real-life “water worlds”, heatwaves will make us feel like living in an oven, and monster typhoons will regularly be uninvited guests. That 2℃ mark isn’t random; it’s the “safety limit” agreed in the Paris Agreement. Crossing it would be like opening Pandora’s box: melting Arctic permafrost would release tons of methane (CH₄), dying coral reefs would ruin ocean ecosystems, and parts of the world could become unlivable by 2100. Scary, right? But here’s the good news: we still hold the reset button. Abandon fossil fuels like coal and oil, and welcome solar, wind, and other green energy allies (盟友)! While renewable energy is growing like a rocket, it’s still not fast enough. Scientists say we need a 2% annual growth to hit the climate brakes (刹车), but the past 20 years only saw a 3.6% total rise. That’s like climbing stairs at a snail’s pace — we need to speed up! Raising renewable growth to 5% yearly, way beyond today’s pace, could push the climate deadline back a full decade, like hitting “pause” on the countdown clock. Time is slipping fast. “The climate emergency is not a distant threat; it’s unfolding before our eyes.” warms UN Secretary-General António Guterres, “Each year of inaction sharpens the edge of the 2035 cliff, making recovery even harder.” Though the window for effective action is narrowing, history has shown humanity’s capacity for transformative change when united by purpose. The question is not whether we can secure a livable planet for future generations. It’s whether we have the resolve to act, starting today. 32. What does “a serious fever” in paragraph 1 represent? A. Collapse of the Earth’s ecosystem. B. Abnormal orbiting of the Earth. C. Rises in global temperatures. D. Discomfort of humans on Earth. 33. What would be the primary result if the 2℃ mark were crossed? A. Coral reefs would die from ocean pollution. B. Massive methane (CH₄) would be given off. C. Construction of cities would be accelerated. D. The Paris Agreement would be revised. 34. What do the figures in paragraph 3 mainly indicate about renewable resources? A. Potential benefits. B. Sufficient supply. C. Improper applications. D. Slow production. 35. Which of the following is the best title for the text? A Climate Change: Causes and Consequences. B. Renewable Energy: The Ultimate Hope for the Future. C. A Pressing Reality: The Risks of Going beyond 2℃. D. The Reset Button: A Milestone in Battling Global Warming. Four Ways to Improve Your Mental Health Mental health is your overall psychological well-being. From the moment I moved into the neighborhood, she had been distant, almost to the point of being rude. She avoided eye contact and brushed off any attempts at conversation. Every day, she would head to the old shack (棚屋) 20 feet away from her house at 9 a. m. and again at 9 p. m. She always had two shopping bags in hand, and she would go into the shack for about 20 minutes before returning to her house. One afternoon, while I was out for a walk, I accidentally approached the shack. The moment Mrs. Harrington saw me approaching, she dashed out of the door, her eyes wide with anger. “Stay away! I'll call the police!” she screamed, her voice high-pitched and desperate. Astonished, I began to apologize and wanted to clarify that I hadn’t meant to intrude (闯入), but Mrs. Harrington cut me off with another sharp outburst, demanding that I leave immediately. The unfriendliness in her tone made it clear that arguing would be useless. I turned and walked back home. The way Mrs. Harrington screamed at me and the panic in her eyes didn’t feel right. I decided to investigate. One night, I slipped out of my front door when she was back inside her house and all the lights were off. Reaching the shack, I noticed there was a large padlock on the door. I took a closer look and spotted a small gap in the wooden door, just big enough to peek through. I hesitated for a moment but finally pressed my nose against the door and peeked inside through the gap. The inside was dark, but as my eyes adjusted, I nearly fainted at what I saw. Inside the shack were dozens of dogs and they were nothing more than skin and bones! What was going on here? Were they being mistreated by her? I started pulling at the lock, trying to force it open. Suddenly, a light flicked on inside Mrs. Harrington’s house. I froze, realizing that I’d woken her up. Before I could react, the front door burst open, and she rushed toward me. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Hearing what Mrs. Harrington said, I breathed a sigh of relief. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $听力考试正式开始。 excuse me, can you tell me how much the shirt is? It's not always the case that you can get the animals to behave in the way you want. When you spend much time in the ocean, though, you get to predict behaviors and you get used to knowing when and where you're going to get particular shots, but often there's only a second to grab the shot you have in mind, which is the hardest part with diver shots. Before we begin, I want to share some advice. Staying active is essential for a healthy lifestyle, but it's important to avoid common workout mistakes. The first error is the lack of variety and exercising, engaging in the same routine can lead you to see no progress. To prevent this, I suggest changing your workout plans monthly, do diverse activities like yoga to improve flexibility, or weight lifting to build strings. Variety not only prevents boredom, but also improves your overall fitness. Another common error is over training. It's important to understand that rest is just as crucial for recovery and growth as the workout itself is not always about the intensity or frequency of your workouts. I recommend aiming for two intense sessions per week. On the days you're not pushing yourself hard, consider engaging in lighter activities such as fast walking or leisure ally cycling. This approach baLances physical effort with recovery. It's also advisable to have at least one day of complete rest weekly to allow your body to fully recover. Remember, wellness is a marathon. Listen to your body and make adjustments accordingly. Thank you for joining our wellness workshop. I'm Richard Simons. Before we begin, I want to share some advice. C. By paying off their debts from treatments. D. By purchasing medical insurance for them. 26. What is paragraph 4 mainly about? A. The public involvement. B. The couple’s commitment. C. Modern educators view memorization as empty repetition, mechanical and prescriptive (规定的) rather than creative or thoughtful. D 29. A 30. B 31. 根据文章第三段“Modern educators view memorization as empty repetition, mechanical and prescriptive(规定的) rather than creative or thoughtful. Reciting texts from memory, they say, merely drops information into students’ minds. It’s repetitive learning instead of critical analysis.”(现代教育者认为记忆是空洞的重复,机械和规定的,而不是创造性或思考性的。他们说,从记忆中背诵文本只是将信息灌输到学生的头脑中。这是重复的学习,而不是批判性的分析。)可知,教育者反对将记忆深入青少年的头脑,因为他们认为这种记忆并不能有助于批判性分析。故选D。 29题详解】 推理判断题。根据文章第四段“Recitation allows students to experience a text as a living thing, ready to be taken up by a new generation. Committing a poem or speech to memory means stepping into the author’s shoes and pondering what he meant.”(背诵让学生体验到文本是一种活的东西,准备被新一代接受。 故选A。 根据文章第四段“Deciding which words to stress when reciting means thinking about what those words mean.”(在背诵时决定重读哪些单词意味着要思考这些单词的意思。)以及“Committing a poem or speech to memory means stepping into the author’s shoes”(记住一首诗或一篇演讲意味着走进作者的角度。) 根据文章倒数第二段“Watch the faces of parents as they listen to their children urging us all toward what Martin Luther King called “a dream deeply rooted in the American dream,” or saying with Robert Frost, “I have been one acquainted with the night,” or with Shakespeare, “Tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow...”( 看看父母们的脸,他们听着孩子们敦促我们朝着马丁·路德·金所说的“深深扎根于美国梦中的梦想”前进,或者像罗伯特·弗罗斯特那样说:“我是一个熟悉黑夜的人”,或者像莎士比亚那样说:“明天、明天、明天……”)以及根据文章最后一段“When young reciters return to their seats, they know they have made ageless words their own. What parents and students feel at that moment transcends (超越) a good grade. For a few minutes, hardworking teens become King, Frost or Shakespeare.”(当年轻的背诵者回到座位时,他们知道他们已经把永恒的词语变成了自己的。那一刻,父母和学生的感觉超越了好成绩。几分钟的时间,勤奋的青少年变成了金、弗罗斯特或莎士比亚。)”可知,作者是通过举例子来说明强调背诵在社交媒体和人工智能时代的重要性的。故选A。 D Did you notice our planet is running a serious fever? A. Climate Change: Causes and Consequences. B. Renewable Energy: The Ultimate Hope for the Future. C. A Pressing Reality: The Risks of Going beyond 2℃. D. The Reset Button: A Milestone in Battling Global Warming. C 33. B 34. D 35. 根据上文“Did you notice our planet is running a serious fever? Scientists warn that by 2035, we might cross a critical point: if global temperatures rise 2°C above pre-industrial levels(你是否注意到我们的星球正在“发高烧”?科学家警告称,到2035年,我们可能会跨越一个临界点:如果全球气温比工业化前的水平升高2摄氏度)”可知,a serious fever指的是全球气温上升,就像地球在发高烧。故选C。 【33题详解】 细节理解题。根据第二段“Crossing it would be like opening Pandora’s box: melting Arctic permafrost would release tons of methane (CH₄), dying coral reefs would ruin ocean ecosystems, and parts of the world could become unlivable by 2100.(超过这个临界点就像打开了潘多拉的盒子:融化的北极永久冻土会释放出大量的甲烷,濒死的珊瑚礁会破坏海洋生态系统,到2100年,世界部分地区可能会变得无法居住)”可知,如果超过2℃的临界点,会释放出大量的甲烷,濒死的珊瑚礁会破坏海洋生态系统,世界部分地区可能会变得无法居住。 根据第三段“While renewable energy is growing like a rocket, it’s still not fast enough. Scientists say we need a 2% annual growth to hit the climate brakes, but the past 20 years only saw a 3.6% total rise.(虽然可再生能源像火箭一样飞速发展,但速度仍然不够快。 结合第一段“Did you notice our planet is running a serious fever? Scientists warn that by 2035, we might cross a critical point: if global temperatures rise 2°C above pre-industrial levels, it’ll be like pressing a “fast-forward” button on disasters. Coastal cities could turn into real-life “water worlds”, heatwaves will make us feel like living in an oven, and monster typhoons will regularly be uninvited guests.(你注意到我们的星球正在严重 “发烧” 吗? ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】 Before I could react, the front door burst open, and she rushed toward me. A wave of panic surged through me. But then I recalled the weak dogs which might have been mistreated by her. My anger flared, pushing aside my fear. I steeled myself to confront this cruel animal abuser. “Good thing I came — who knows how long you'd have kept abusing those dogs! I’m calling the police!” I yelled back, my voice trembling with fury. She froze, confusion and disbelief flashing across her face, “I didn’t abuse them. I’ve been trying to save them.” Hearing what Mrs. Harrington said, I breathed a sigh of relief. “Then why do you always come and go with two bags?” I asked in confusion. I had assumed she was disposing of mistreated dogs. “You don’ t understand. These dogs were abandoned. I rescued them, but when I kept them outside, some dog haters poisoned them. I had no choice but to care for them secretly.” Shame flooded me. This old lady was actually a quiet guardian of the helpless. Without hesitation, I offered to help. That day, we were no longer strangers— we were allies in kindness. 词汇激活 行为类 ①回想起:recall/recollect ②面对:confront/face ③拯救:save/rescue 情绪类 ①恐慌:panic/alarm ②暴怒:fury/rage 【点睛】[高分句型1]But then I recalled the weak dogs which might have been mistreated by her.(运用了which引导定语从句) [高分句型2]I yelled back, my voice trembling with fury.(运用了“名词+现在分词”构成的独立主格) 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $
