Are you curious about the future? What do you think our life will be like in 50 years or more? To answer this, you can read a sci-fi book. Perhaps you will have some ideas then. Today, many young readers are interested in science fiction. But what makes it so popular?
For one thing, science fiction gives us a chance to imagine what our future will be like. Anything is possible. We can dream big. Some people think there will be flying cars and robot servants. Others believe we will learn more about strange aliens and other worlds. Another reason is that sci-fi writers and their work can inspire (鼓舞) us to create the future. In 1945, a sci-fi author named Arthur C. Clarke wrote about a system (系统) of space stations. In the article, he predicted the earth of the future would have many TV stations and people would send TV programmes around the world. Besides, in a short story by Clarke, he suggested people in the future would use a system to talk with others around the world. Amazingly, the short story was actually the inspiration (灵感) for the Internet!
Science fiction is also popular because it can make us think about our world in new ways. Although many sci-fi stories are set in imaginary worlds or societies, they can help us better understand the real world.
What will the future be like? Sci-fi inspires us and helps us to understand what it could be like in the future.
43. What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 1 refer to?
A. A short story. B. The future world. C. Science fiction. D. A talk system.
44. How can sci-fi stories help us understand the real world?
A. By describing imaginary societies exactly like ours.
B By encouraging new ways of thinking about reality.
C. By perfectly predicting what will happen.
D. By focusing only on scientific facts.
45. Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A. What our future will be like B. Why young people can dream big
C. What makes science fiction so popular D. How to understand the real world better
D
Jianzi is a traditional Chinese sport, with a long history of over 2, 000 years. It shares the same origin (起源) with British football, Both of them come from the ancient Chinese game—cuju.
Jianzi kicking has been a popular activity in China. People of all ages enjoy playing it, whether old or young. People can play it alone or in groups. The rule is simple: Keep jianzi in the air by using any part of your body except your hands.
A traditional jianzi is made of feathers, coins and cloth. Soft and light feathers are often chosen to make jianzi jump higher. In order to make the feather last longer, people would put the feather in the water with Sichuan pepper for some days. It’s said that pepper can protect feathers from insects. Modern jianzi uses rubber (橡胶) to carry the feather to cut down cost. But in the past, people liked to use coins with holes to carry the feather, as coins meant wealth and good luck. Then feathers were sewn (缝) on the coin with cloth, because ancient people believed that wealth shouldn’t be shown to others.
Jianzi has been considered as a Chinese national treasure. Today, kicking jianzi is not only for fun but also a way of passing down traditional art.
46. What is the main rule of playing jianzi?
A. Use only your feet. B. Play only in groups.
C. Kick it into a goal. D. Keep it in the air without using hands.
47. Why did people like to use coins to make jianzi in the past?
A. To show their wealth. B. To wish to become rich and lucky.
C. To make jianzi beautiful. D. To play jianzi happily and easily.
48. What’s Paragraph 3 mainly about?
A. When jianzi was made. B. How jianzi is played.
C. What jianzi is made of. D. Why coins were used in jianzi.
49. What’s the purpose of the text?
A. To introduce the traditional Chinese sport—jianzi. B. To explain how to make jianzi.
C. To compare jianzi with British football. D. To encourage people to play jianzi more.

Bruce is a father of three daughters. One night, while he was enjoying dinner with his girls, Bruce saw some smoke. He started looking around. Then he found the smoke was coming out of the kitchen.
At once, Bruce got some water to put out the fire, but it was not helpful at all. The fire was getting even bigger. He called 911 and quickly cleared everyone out of the house.
Bruce and the kids couldn’t do anything but stand outside and watch their house. It was bright red. In the end, everything in it was burned black. That made Bruce so unhappy.
At that time, something unexpected happened. Ms Clark came to them and invited the girls to get into her house. And more and more neighbors chose to show up in the street to offer help. People who Bruce had never talked to brought him coats and food. Then they just walked away and disappeared around the street corner. Bruce felt so moved.
During the following weeks, more families offered to help. They lent Bruce more necessary things and provided the children with toys. Strangers and groups from several blocks away gave some money away to the family.

Modern jianzi uses rubber (橡胶) to carry the feather to cut down cost. But in the past, people liked to use coins with holes to carry the feather, as coins meant wealth and good luck.
With these kind people’s help, Bruce soon rebuilt his house. He thought he was really lucky to have these wonderful neighbors. In the future, he would do the same thing for others in need, just as what they had done for him.
