Noise-.canceling headphones(降噪耳机)bring you a quiet
world, but using them for too long might be bad for your brain,
according to The New York Post.
Doctors from the UK's National Health Service(NHS)have
seen more young people having "ear problems".These problems include having
trouble understanding speech or needing subtitles(to watch videos. However,
their ears are healthy. It's their brains that are affected. This problem is known as
auditory processing disorder(APD,听觉处理障碍).People with APD can hear
sounds but find it hard to understand them.
"For our hearing to work well, our brains need to choose which sounds to focus
on and which to ignore().We get the skill when we hear different sounds. If
we don't hear different kinds of sounds,we can lose this skill, said NHS doctors.
Noise-canceling headphones take away these different sounds, which might be part
of the problem.
Claire Benton from the British Academy of Audiology said that wearing these
headphones creates a "false"environment where you only hear what you want. This
makes it easier for your brain,so it doesn't have to work as hard.
Noise travels in waves through air and water.Noise-canceling headphones stop
these waves in two ways:One is to use things like special ear cups. The other is to
use a microphone(麦克风)to cancel out noise with opposite sound waves.
This technology can be harmful if you use it too much. However,it is still
helpful for people working in noisy places.
28.What problem do people with APD have?
A.They are unable to hear loud sounds.
B.They have difficulty understanding sounds.
C.They have trouble reading the subtitles in videos.

Beijing, has her own secret way to learn:spaced repetition(间隔重复法).Spaced
repetition is about reviewing what you've learned many times just before you forget
it.This method helps you improve your memory.
英语试题(N)第8页(共10页)
Tang wasn't always at the top of her class. Before, she often forgot what she
had learned in class.Things started to change when her Chinese teacher introduced
her to spaced repetition.Tang first used this method to learn ancient Chinese
poems.Over the years, she has used it for all her subjects.
In general, spaced repetition suggests reviewing materials first after one day,
then three days later,then a week later,and finally a month later.But Tang
believes the review plan should be flexible(灵话的).“You should change your
review plan to meet your own needs,"she said.
Take math as an example. After each test,Tang writes down her mistakes in a
notebook and goes over them in the middle of the week.On weekends,Tang
reviews the mistakes again."I don't just check those mistakes;I also try to find
different ways to solve them,"Tang said. This active thinking often leads to
surprising moments."Sometimes,after a night's sleep,the problems that I had
struggled with(苦苦思索)suddenly become clear..”
Tang believes it's a good idea to review difficult materials more often, while
spending less time on things you already know well. Now,Tang has jumped from
the middle ranks(梯队)to the top three in her class.“It is truly amazing,”she said.
56.What does spaced repetition mean?
57.Why does Tang think our review plan should be flexible?
58.How does Tang review her math mistakes on weckends?
59.How does Tang feel about her progress?
60.Do you want to try spaced repetition? Why or why not?
