M: Okay, I don’t like fees either, but I don’t like that long driving to Vancouver. First, it takes about 12 hours to drive from San Francisco to Portland. Then a 3-hour ride to Seattle and another 3 hours to get to Vancouver. It would be tiring.
W: Well, let me tell you about some of the other fees. They sometimes charge you for a pillow or a blanket now.
M: Okay, I don’t think the cost is the problem here. It’s the fact that I only have a week for vacation. As soon as we get to Vancouver, we’ll have to turn back!

B. Every person has 10 fingers.
C. Indians invented the 10 numbers.
Today I’d like to talk about the number system. It seems very natural that if you have two dollars and add two dollars to them, you have four dollars. But do you know it took human beings millions of years to be able to think this way? In ancient times, when a man wanted to tell how many animals he owned, he put a stone into a bag for each animal.
The more animals he had, the more stones he had. Later on, human beings drew a line for each object they wanted to count, but they had no word to tell the number. The next step in the development of the number system was probably to use fingers, and the fact that we have ten fingers led to the general use of 10 in the system of numbers. The number system we use today was invented by the Hindus in India thousands of years ago and was brought to Europe between the 8th and 11th century by Arab traders.

Last summer at a bookstore, my son Henry was fascinated by the cover of the first novel from Peter Brown’s middle-grade trilogy (三部曲). He then finished it in just two days. “Dad, why did The Wild Robot have to be so sad?” He tearfully asked me.
The story is set on a remote island, where a robot named Roz learns to survive and communicate with the island’s creatures, and becomes part of the community. For my son, it was the first book he discovered on his own; the first to impact him with the mix of tragedy and joy.
When I finished the book, I knew why Henry loved it. In our book club discussion, he described how Brown’s pictures and words had made the story feel real. When talking about its final scenes, where Roz leaves to find repairs for her injured body, Henry cried again. His previous reading experiences had cheerful, “happily-ever-after” endings, but this book introduced him to the beauty of complex emotions. I tried to explain how sadness can enhance the meaning of happy moments, but failed to fully convince him.
Once our discussion ended, Henry requested to buy The Wild Robot Escapes and instantly fell in love with it. He read the first two books repeatedly, so you can imagine his excitement when we finally got a copy of The Wild Robot Protects.
We both agree it is worth the wait. Roz leaves the island again to stop an underwater threat: “the poison tide.” Brown expertly balances between breathtaking adventure and unsettling ideas — not just happiness and sadness, but also, given the climate-change undercurrents, hope and despair.
And, here’s something special about Roz: her physical clumsiness and confusion about life, conveyed through her expressive eyes and downturned mouth. Her story reflects the challenges of surviving in a strange place, much like a child’s journey. Readers love Roz. They learn from her. Even better, they learn alongside her. Roz gave Henry the power to push through the first book’s sad parts, getting him ready to appreciate that, sometimes, sadness isn’t a bad thing to feel.
24.What made the author read The Wild Robot?
A.Its tragic ending.
B.Its attractive cover.
C.Henry’s emotional response to it.
D.Henry’s tearful recommendation.
25.How was the trilogy different from books Henry had read?
A.It referred to the topic of robots.
B.It expressed complicated feelings.
C.It prevented an underwater threat.
D.It described the scene of an island.
26.What makes Roz in the trilogy special?
A.Her robotic power.
B.Her adventurous spirit.
C.Her strange expressions.
D.Her struggling experiences.
27.What does the author want to convey to us?
A.Misfortune inspires great literary works.
B.Robot stories work like magic on children.
C.Book discussions help kids survive tragedies.
D.Reading tragedies facilitates personal growth.

In the Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve, millions of monarch butterflies find shelter in the oyamel fir forests after a difficult migration from Canada and the United States down to Mexico for the winter. Now, as rising temperatures, droughts, and disease threaten the forests of the monarch reserve, scientists are hoping to help these trees migrate.
“We’re doing something different,” says Sáenz-Romero, a researcher of the reserve. “If we don’t do this, the trees in the monarch reserve are going to die.” By 2090, the reserve’s forest habitats are expected to deteriorate, as temperatures warm. Using a technique called assisted migration, researchers might be able to move these trees to the nearby volcano.
Forests move naturally; they move in many directions and altitudes as climate changes. Assisted migration helps the forest move more quickly than it would do so naturally. You collect seeds from a place with a specific climate, like the monarch reserve, and move them to an area that will have a similar climate in the future, explains Sáenz-Romero.
The experiment began in 2017, when Sáenz-Romero and his team gathered seeds from oyamel fir trees in the Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve at various altitudes. For two years, the plants grew in a shade house and then for another year in a nursery at around 9,800 feet to help them adapt to the altitude. Then, in 2021, they planted the young trees under “nurse plants”, which protected them from difficult conditions. In 2023, six years after planting the seeds, they found that at two of those heights, 11,800 and 12,400 feet, nearly 70 percent of the young trees had survived even at the higher altitude.
“These types of experiments are tremendously important,” said Sally Aitken, who wasn’t involved in the study. “However, assisted migration outside of a tree’s normal range comes with concerns. Oyamel firs don’t normally grow at this height on Nevado de Toluca’s slopes. Moving a species could have unintended ecological consequences for other species present in that ecosystem.” Aitken added.
For now, in Mexico, Sáenz-Romero hopes this new study convinces conservationists and government officials that assisted migration can establish new potential wintering sites for the monarch butterflies.
28.What does the underlined word “deteriorate” in paragraph 2 mean?
A.Get worse. B.Grow larger. C.Maintain. D.Improve.
29.Which of the following best describes the experiment?
A.Costly. B.Successful. C.Controversial. D.Risky.
30.What did Aitken think of assisted migration?
A.It could benefit all species. B.It could change the local weather.
C.It could have ecological risks. D.It could definitely save Monarch Butterflies.
31.What is the text mainly about?
A.The migration of the oyamel fir forests.
B.A way to save monarch butterflies’ habitats.
C.The threats Monarch butterflies’ survival is facing.
D.The importance of the Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve.

American teenagers are increasingly confiding (吐露秘密) in Sonny, a hybrid AI-human chatbot positioned in schools struggling with shortages of mental-health counselors. Developed by Sonar Mental Health, this innovative “well-being companion” blends AI-generated responses with real-time human review to provide emotional support in underserved districts.
Sonny’s unique model integrates licensed professionals in psychology, social work, and crisis intervention, who inspect Al-suggested replies, edit them, or craft personalized responses. Sonar CEO Drew Barvir, who co-founded the company at Stanford Graduate School of Business, explains that the Al acts as a “co-pilot” to human counselors, allowing staff to monitor 15-25 chats at the same time. The system employs advanced algorithms (算法) to detect high-risk language-such as threats of self-harm or violence — automatically alerting parents or school administrators when necessary. Currently, Sonny serves over 4,500 middle and high school students across nine districts, mainly in low-income and rural areas lacking mental-health service.
The U.S. faces a severe counselor shortage. While the American School Counselor Association recommends one counselor per 250 students, the national average is 1:376, with 17% of high schools having no counselor at all. At Berryville High School in Arkansas, two counselors struggle to support 565 students.
To address this divide, Ashley Sharp, a mental-health coordinator (协调人), introduced Sonny in late 2023. Among 175 registered users, 53% engage with Sonny multiple times monthly, with message volume spiking during exam periods. This trend led the school to partner with experts to teach stress-coping strategies. Notably, Berryville observed a 26% drop in student behavioral offenses after Sonny’s launch. Sharp credits this success to the platform’s accessibility and nonjudgmental nature, with students calling it a “safe space” to express anxieties. Sonny’s hybrid design — combining AI’s 24/7 availability with human empathy (共情) — proves particularly vital in regions where traditional counseling resources are scarce.
As schools nationwide tackle rising meatal-health demands, tools like Sonny highlight technology’s potential to supplement—not replace—human caregivers, ensuring no student is left without support.
32.What is the main idea of Paragraph 2?
A.Working principle of Sonny’s model. B.The detection of high-risk language.
C.The achievements of Sonar CEO. D.Sonny’s wide service range.
33.Why does the author cite some figures in Paragraph 4?
A.To discuss effective stress-coping strategies.
B.To underline Sonny’s popularity and success.
C.To analyze Sonny’s unique nature and potential.
D.To compare different counseling resources.
34.What does the underlined word “supplement” probably mean in the last paragraph? d
A.Overtake. B.Monitor. C.Aid. D.Challenge.
35.Which of the following is the best title for the passage?
A.US Schools Faces Shortage of Counselors
B.“Safe Space” in Mental Health Education
C.Hybrid Chatbot Fills Mental Health Gap
D.AI Counseling Gets Trendy in Psychology
【答案】32.A 33.B 34.C 35.C
故选A项。
第四段中“Among 175 registered users, 53% engage with Sonny multiple times monthly, with message volume spiking during exam periods. This trend led the school to partner with experts to teach stress-coping strategies. Notably, Berryville observed a 26% drop in student behavioral offenses after Sonny’s launch.(在175名注册用户中,53%的人每月与Sonny进行多次互动,在考试期间消息量激增。这一趋势促使该校与专家合作,教授应对压力的策略。值得注意的是,在Sonny推出后,贝里维尔观察到学生行为违法下降了26%)”提到了注册用户中多次使用 Sonny的比例,以及考试期间信息数量的增加,还有学生行为违规率下降等数据,这些数据表明Sonny很受欢迎且取得了成功。故选B项。
34.词句猜测题。根据最后一段中“As schools nationwide tackle rising meatal-health demands, tools like Sonny highlight technology’s potential to supplement — not replace — human caregivers, ensuring no student is left without support.( 随着全国各地的学校都在应对日益增长的肉类健康需求,像Sonny这样的工具凸显了技术supplement——而不是取代——人类护理人员的潜力,确保没有一个学生得不到支持)”可知,当全国各地的学校应对不断增长的心理健康需求时,像Sonny这样的工具凸显了技术在辅助(而非取代)人类护理人员方面的潜力,以确保没有学生得不到支持。

Emily and Zoe had been best friends since second grade. They went to the same school, played on the same soccer team, and even wore matching bracelets (手链). Everyone around them said they were like two sides of the same coin. They believed nothing could come between them. But things started to change when a new girl Daisy came to their class.
One day, their teacher, Mr. Lynn, announced a big group project. “Pick a partner,” he said. Emily immediately turned to Zoe, expecting her usual smile and a quick “yes.” But to her surprise, Zoe was already talking to Daisy. “I’m going to work with Daisy this time,” Zoe said to Emily, almost too casually. Emily felt like the air had been knocked out of her. She nodded and forced a smile, but inside, she was confused and hurt. That night, she stared at her phone screen, hoping for a message that never came.
Over the next few days, she avoided Zoe. Their texts stopped, they no longer sat together during lunch, and the bracelets they once wore daily were now left at home. Even during class, Emily found it hard to focus, her mind replaying the moment when Zoe chose someone else.
Weeks passed. The school organized a three-day camping trip in the mountains. Students were divided into several groups. Emily and Zoe ended up in the same one, along with Daisy and two other classmates. Though they barely spoke, they worked together to put up tents and gather firewood. Their conversations were limited to short, polite exchanges — nothing like before.
On the second night, dark clouds rolled in and heavy rain soon followed. Everyone rushed into their own tents. Emily quickly discovered that hers was leaking. Cold and upset, she went outside, seeking for help. The wind howled around her, and each raindrop felt like a tiny needle against her skin.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
Just then, she saw a flashlight approaching.

With Zoe’s help, they soon fixed the tent.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Just then, she saw a flashlight approaching. In the dim light, Emily recognized it was nobody else but Zoe. Her face was filled with concern when she saw Emily struggling in the cold. “I thought you might need help,” Zoe said softly. Emily’s eyes widened with a mix of surprise and relief. Without a word, Zoe stepped forward and examined the tent. She explained that she could fix it with the spare raincoat she had brought. As they worked together, the awkwardness gradually melted away. Emily realized that Zoe still cared and the rain seemed to have washed away the misunderstandings between them.
With Zoe’s help, they soon fixed the tent. Back inside the tent, Emily took a deep breath and said, “I was so hurt when you chose Daisy for the project.” Zoe looked at her apologetically and replied, “I’m sorry. I just thought it would be better to include the new comer, but I never meant to hurt you.” That night, they had an open-hearted conversation, clearing up all the confusion. Until then did they realize that friends need open communication and their bond became even stronger. From then on, they wore their matching bracelets again, a symbol of their unbreakable friendship.

M: Well, a figgy pudding is a traditional British Christmas dessert. It looks like a cake. It’s not that common today, but people used to give a figgy pudding to each other at Christmas hundreds of years ago.

W: So that’s the plan. We leave San Francisco, then to Portland, then to Seattle, and then to Vancouver.
M: What? Why are we driving all the way to Vancouver instead of flying?
W: Haven’t you noticed all of the extra fees the airlines are charging these days, like the additional luggage?

1.续写词数应为150左右;
