Travel Journal
Friday
We arrived in Paris on Friday lunchtime and went straight to our apartment. We then went for a walk around our area and realized how close we were to the centre of Paris. It only took us 20 minutes to walk to the Louvre. After a walk around the Tuileries Gardens, we went for afternoon tea in a café called Angelina which has the most delicious hot chocolate. After warming up we then walked along to the big department store Printemps, on the top floor where you get a wonderful view of Paris (this was free). We walked along a street called Grands Boulevards which was beautiful with all its Christmas lights. The shops on this street are famous for their Christmas window displays. In the evening we cooked at the apartment and went to a Scottish pub which was funny as two of my friends are Scottish.
Saturday
In the morning we went for brunch (a meal between breakfast and lunch) at a really cool café called FAB (French American Bakery). We had waffles with bacon and fresh carrot and ginger juice. We found out that we were really close to a chocolate museum, so of course we took a visit--- who doesn’t love chocolate! In the afternoon we went to a Christmas market with unique handmade gifts and crafts. In the evening we ate at a Tunisian restaurant and had roast chicken and vegetable stew with couscous. It was delicious and the restaurant was in a cute little lane.
Sunday
On Sunday we went for breakfast at the same café and we caught our train back home at midday, carrying shopping bags full of lovely presents that we had bought at the Christmas market. We had a great weekend in Paris. Exploring this beautiful city with no plans was an unusual but great idea as we got to do things we wouldn’t normally discover. I highly recommend spending a weekend somewhere trying to be a local!

It was one of those terribly hot days in Baltimore. Needless to say, it was too hot to do anything outside. But it was also scorching in our apartment. This was 1962, and I would not live in a place with an air conditioner for another ten years. So my brother and I decided to leave the apartment to find someplace indoors. He suggested we could see a movie. It was a brilliant plan.
Movie theaters were one of the few places you could sit all day and — most important — sit in air conditioning. In those days, you could buy one ticket and sit through two movies. Then, the theater would show the same two movies again. If you wanted to, you could sit through them twice. Most people did not do that, but the manager at our theater, Mr. Bellow, did not mind if you did.
That particular day, my brother and I sat through both movies twice, trying to escape the heat. We bought three bags of popcorn and three sodas each. Then, we sat and watched The Music Man followed by The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance. We’d already seen the second movie once before. It had been at the theater since January, because Mr. Bellow loved anything with John Wayne in it.
We left the theater around 8 just before the evening shows began. But we returned the next day and saw the same two movies again, twice more. And we did it the next day too. Finally, on the fourth day, the heat wave broke.
Still, to this day I can sing half the songs in The Music Man and recite half of John Wayne and Jimmy Stewart’s dialogue from The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance! Those memories are some of the few I have of the heat wave of 1962. They’re really memories of the screen, not memories of my life.
4. In which year did the author first live in a place with an air conditioner?
A. 1952. B. 1962. C. 1972. D. 1982.

7. Which of the following is True according to the last paragraph?
A. The author turned out to be a great singer.

Adaptation and innovation (创新) of traditional opera is an important trend in Chinese opera circle in recent years. In order to attract young audience of new generation and catch up with the time, traditional opera circle makes efforts to create new works. In recent years, traditional opera has come across the change of time and society. It gradually lost the main elderly audience and was not attractive for the young.
In order to find new opportunities, using modern sound, light and digital stage effects, China’s traditional Peking, also known as jingju, Opera is appealing to young people in a fashionable and innovative way, as the classic art faces an aging audience.
The centuries-old Tianleyuan Theater in Beijing has introduced fashionable performances of Peking Opera. The opera combines instrumental music, vocal performance, mime (哑剧表演), dance and acrobatics (杂技).
Tianleyuan has a jingju art experience section and fashionable performances. It has attracted more than 2,000 audience members, mostly young people, according to theater staff.
“Good art should keep pace with the times, so does jingju,” said Zhang Zishang, a 22-year-old performer of The Drunken Beauty, one of the classic jingju plays performed in the theater. “I feel today’s performance is very special,” Zhang added. She was born into a family of jingju performers and has had 10 years of stage experience. “Innovation is good, but we must also carry on the basic elements of jingju,” another young performer Deng said.
According to Deng, innovation is perhaps the best way for jingju to deal with the problem of an aging audience. It has made successful attempts to combine jingju with local opera forms such as ballet when organizing performances abroad. “Innovation can help traditional arts go further. We are happy to see many young faces, and some of them even come twice to experience the ‘new’ art,” she added.
8. Why is adaptation and innovation of traditional opera important?
A. To run after fashion. B. To attract the young audience.
C. To improve digital stage effect. D. To change the traditional opera circle.
9. Which of the following can best describe Tianleyuan Theater?
A. A destroyer of Peking Opera. B. An objector of modern opera.
C. A pioneer of innovative opera. D. A defender of traditional opera.
10. How does Deng feel about the innovation of jingju?
A. Favourable. B. Unreliable. C. Worthless. D. Conservative.
11. Which one can be a suitable title for the text?
A. The Traditional Opera Is Dying Out
B. The Future of the Traditional Opera Is Promising
C. The Performers of the Traditional Opera Are Supporting Jingju
D. Traditional Opera Circle Is Innovating to Attract Young Audience
B 9. C 10. A 11. D

根据文章第三段“The centuries-old Tianleyuan Theater in Beijing has introduced fashionable performances of Peking Opera. The opera combines instrumental music, vocal performance, mime (哑剧表演), dance and acrobatics (杂技).(有着百年历史的北京天乐园剧院引进了流行的京剧表演。京剧结合了器乐、声乐、哑剧、舞蹈和杂技。)”和第四段“Tianleyuan has a jingju art experience section and fashionable performances. It has attracted more than 2,000 audience members, mostly young people, according to theater staff.(天乐园设有京剧艺术体验区和时尚表演区。据剧院工作人员说,它吸引了2000多名观众,其中大部分是年轻人。)”可知,天乐园剧院率先进行了改革,所以它是创新戏剧的先驱,故选C。
【10题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章最后一段“According to Deng, innovation is perhaps the best way for jingju to deal with the problem of an aging audience.(邓认为,创新或许是京剧应对观众老龄化问题的最佳方式。)” 故选A。
通读全文,尤其是第一段“Adaptation and innovation (创新) of traditional opera is an important trend in Chinese opera circle in recent years. Scientists have long known that plants react to their environment in all sorts of ways. For example, they grow toward sunlight and release chemicals to fight off insects that want to eat them. Not all scientists are comfortable calling those abilities “awareness,” a word many people use to describe only humans and animals. But for Gagliano, an evolutionary biologist at the University of Western Australia, it’s obvious. “Plants are responding to the environment and the information that the environment is providing them,” she says. “That’s awareness.”
The challenge for scientists like her is to prove it. So Gagliano created an experiment. She attached potted mimosa (含羞草) plants to a metal rail and dropped them, letting them quickly slide down six inches. At first, all the mimosa plants closed their leaves when they fell. But once Gagliano had dropped them several times, they got used to it and started to keep their leaves open during the fall. Then Gagliano left the mimosa plants alone for almost a month. When she came back and dropped them again, they still didn’t close their leaves. Gagliano’s work showed mimosa plants could not only learn from past experiences, but they could also remember them for a long time.
More recently, Gagliano gave pea plants a chance to shine. Plants make their food out of sunlight, so they grow toward light sources. Every time Gagliano shined a light source at her pea plants, she also pointed a fan at them. The breeze came from the same direction as the light. After three days of training, she took away the light source and just pointed a fan at the plants. Sure enough, most of the pea plants grew toward the breeze. They had learned to associate it with light. “That was pretty amazing. It shows a real choice, a real decision,” she says.
Gagliano hopes her experiments will inspire other scientists to give plants more credit. “Humans have a tendency to look at our perspective as the only available one, and the only worthwhile one,” she says. Her experiments help reveal how much we humans have overlooked, just because we didn’t know how to see what plants were really up to.
12. Which of the following can be regarded as “awareness” of plants according to Gagliano?
A. Plants eat insects for food.
B. Plants’ leaves produce oxygen.
C. Plants’ roots grow toward water source.
D. Plants release chemicals to attract insects.
13. Why did Gagliano drop the mimosa plants several times in her first experiment?
A. To help them to grow better.
B. To test whether they have memories.
C. To see if they can close their leaves.
D. To create a challenging environment for them.
14. What can be concluded about pea plants from paragraph 3?
A. They shine with sunlight.
B. They are sensitive to changes.
C. They grow towards breeze naturally.
D. They respond to the environment well.
15. What does Gagliano mean in the last paragraph?
A. Plant behaviors are too complex to understand.
B. Plants should be treated like humans and animals.
C. Plants may have more potential than humans thought.
D. Humans have a unique perspective in the study of plants.
C 13. B 14. D 15. C
由文章第一段中““Plants are responding to the environment and the information that the environment is providing them,” she says. “That’s awareness.” (“植物正在对环境以及环境提供给它们的信息作出反应,”她说,“这就是意识。”)”可知,Gagliano认为植物对环境及其提供的信息作出反应就是“意识”。因此,植物朝向水源生长可以被视为植物的“意识”。故选C。
【13题详解】
推理判断题。由文章第二段“The challenge for scientists like her is to prove it.
由文章第三段中“After three days of training, she took away the light source and just pointed a fan at the plants. Sure enough, most of the pea plants grew toward the breeze. They had learned to associate it with light. (经过三天的训练后,她拿走了光源,只对着植物吹风扇。果然,大多数豌豆植物都朝着微风的方向生长。它们已经学会了将微风与光线联系起来)”可知,豌豆植物在经过训练后学会了将风与光联系起来,说明它们对环境有很好的反应能力。故选D。
【15题详解】
推理判断题。由文章最后一段“Gagliano hopes her experiments will inspire other scientists to give plants more credit. “Humans have a tendency to look at our perspective as the only available one, and the only worthwhile one,” she says. Her experiments help reveal how much we humans have overlooked, just because we didn’t know how to see what plants were really up to.

1. Where did they enjoy the beautiful view of Paris?
A. In a Scottish pub. B. In a department store.
C. In a café called Angelina. D. In the Louvre.
2. What may the Christmas market be famous for?
A. Christmas lights. B. Delicious food.
C. Handmade gifts and crafts. D. Christmas window display.
3. When did they leave Paris according to the text?
A. On Sunday lunchtime. B. On the morning of Saturday.
C. On the morning of Sunday. D. On Friday lunchtime.
B
We left the theater around 8, just before the evening shows began.
A. 1952. B. 1962. C. 1972. D. 1982.
5. What does the underlined word “it” in paragraph 3 refer to?
A. The heat.
B. The theater.
C. The Music Man.
D The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance.
6. Why did the author and his brother see the same movies several times?
A. The two movies were really wonderful.
B. They wanted to avoid the heat outside.
C The manager of the theater was friendly.

B Plants should be treated like humans and animals.
C. Plants may have more potential than humans thought.
D. Humans have a unique perspective in the study of plants.

The Cliton family lived in a small community. As the economy was going down, some people in the town had lost their jobs. Many of their families were struggling to make ends meet. People were trying to help each other meet the challenges.
Mrs. Cliton was a most kind and thoughtful woman. She spent a great deal of time visiting the poor. She knew they had problems, and they needed all kinds of help. When she had time, she would bring food and medicine to them.
One morning she told her children about a family she had visited the day before. There was a man sick in bed, his wife, who took care of him and could not go out to work, and their little boy. The little boy — his name was Boby — had interested her very much.
“I wish you could see him,” she said to her own children, John, Harry, and Clara. “He is such a help to his mother. He wants very much to earn some money, but I don’t see what he can do.” After their mother left the room, the children sat thinking about Boby. “I wish we could help him to earn money,” said Clara. “His family is suffering so much.”
“So do I,” said Harry. “We really should do something to assist them.”
For some moments, John said nothing, but, suddenly, he sprang to his feet and cried, “I have a great idea! I have a solution that we can all help achieve.”
The other children also jumped up all attention. When John had an idea, it was sure to be a good one. “I tell you what we can do,” said John. “You know that big box of corn Uncle John sent us?
