Imagine getting into a car, telling the computer your destination (目的地), and relaxing while the car drives itself. When you arrive, it drops you off and returns home. This is what self-driving cars can do. But remember, the “smart driving” cars we talk about today are not self-driving cars. They can only assist (辅助) drivers in some ways while drivers’ full attention is still needed.
A self-driving car moves without human help. It is also called an autonomous or driverless car. It means a person does not need to control the car at all. Big companies are working on this technology. It is believed that they might make up 10 percent of all new car sales by 2030. However, building these cars is complicated because they have many parts that must work together as one big, safe machine. In addition, roads and traffic may make it harder for them to work well.
On the other hand, self-driving cars have many advantages. They could reduce accidents since most accidents happen because of human mistakes. The U.S. government found that 94 percent of accidents are caused by drivers, so these cars may make roads safer. They can also help people with disabilities live more freely. In addition, these cars reduce traffic jams because they stop running when not needed. This leads to less pollution and lower fuel (燃料) use.
31. What does the text say about the “smart driving” cars today?
A. They are completely driverless.
B They can drive better than humans.
C. They still need drivers’ full attention.
D. They are the same as the self-driving cars.
32 What does the underlined word “complicated” in paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. Hard. B. Easy. C. Slow. D. Quick.
33. According to the text, what kind of people can self-driving cars help?
A. The old drivers. B. The disabled people.
C. The teenage students. D. The smart car makers.
34. Why can self-driving cars help reduce pollution?
A. They don’t use fuel at all. B. They drive at a high speed.
C. They stop running when not needed. D. They have many complicated parts.
35. What is the best title for the text?
A. How to Choose the Right Smart Car B. Why Human Drivers Are Dangerous
C. The Difficulties in Building New Cars D. Self-Driving Cars: A New Road Ahead
C
In the 13th century, things like silk, tea, spices (香料), and gold were very valuable in Europe. China had many of these goods, so people wanted to trade with China. The main way to get there was by traveling the Silk Road, a long and dangerous “road” controlled by Arab (阿拉伯) traders. Only their friends and partners could use it safely. Europeans were not allowed to travel this road, which made trade very expensive.
The Polo family was one of the richest trader families in Venice, Italy. In 1266, they decided to find a different way to China. They traveled east from Venice and reached Kaifeng. And they returned to Venice in 1269. In 1271, they set out again—this time with young Marco Polo.
In 1275, they arrived in Cambuluc (now called Beijing). Marco Polo became a favorite of Kublai Khan (忽必烈). He stayed in China for many years, learning about Chinese life and culture. When he finally went back home to Venice, he wrote a book called The Travels of Marco Polo. In the book, he described what he had seen in China. Europeans were amazed by his stories. He talked about paper money, coal, gunpowder (火药), and other things that were new to Europe. He also wrote about Chinese customs and inventions.
Thanks to Marco Polo and his family, more people in Europe became interested in China. Even though they weren’t the first to visit China, their travels helped open the way for future trade and friendship between East and West.
36. Why did Europeans want to trade with China in the 13th century?
A China controlled the Silk Road. B. China had many valuable goods.
C. They want to sell goods to the Arabs. D. Their friends and partners lived in China.
37. Where did the Polo family reach during their first travel?
A. Kaifeng. B. Beijing. C. Kunming. D. Shanghai.
38. Which is the right order of Marco Polo’s journey?
①He went back home to Venice, Italy.
②He wrote The Travels of Marco Polo.
③He arrived in Cambuluc and met Kublai Khan.
④He learned about Chinese life and culture.
A. ③①④② B. ④③①② C. ③④①② D. ④②③①
39. If Marco Polo is still alive today, which of the following job would be the best for him?
A. A coal trader. B. A travel guide. C. A novel writer. D. A Chinese teacher.
40. What is the main purpose of the text?
A To introduce the book written by Marco Polo.
B To list reasons why the Silk Road was dangerous.

B. They can drive better than humans.
C. They still need drivers’ full attention.
D. They are the same as the self-driving cars.
32. What does the underlined word “complicated” in paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. Hard. B. Easy. C. Slow. D. Quick.
33. According to the text, what kind of people can self-driving cars help?
A. The old drivers. B. The disabled people.
C. The teenage students. D. The smart car makers.
34. Why can self-driving cars help reduce pollution?
A. They don’t use fuel at all. B. They drive at a high speed.
C. They stop running when not needed. D. They have many complicated parts.
35. What is the best title for the text?
A. How to Choose the Right Smart Car B. Why Human Drivers Are Dangerous
C. The Difficulties in Building New Cars D. Self-Driving Cars: A New Road Ahead
【答案】31. C 32. A 33. B 34. C 35. D

What touched me most was their conversation. The old man, with tears in his eyes, kept thanking him. The stranger just smiled and said, “We all need help sometimes.”
