Passage 1
A promise can go a long way in personal relationships. It is a commitment(承诺) to follow through on your word. But what does it mean when you say “I promise...”, and how does this influence your relationships?
We all have heard “I promise...” time and time again. Promises help us get closer to those we love. Studies suggest that keeping promises holds a lot of emotional value. When we break them, there is a decline(降低) in trust. But why is it so important to keep a promise and how do we stick to it?Here are some important reminders of promises.
Promises are hard work. Usually, it is not easy to follow through on a promise. They require us to step outside of our wants and achieve something for someone else or challenge ourselves to break old harmful habits.
Promises are meant to be taken seriously. When a promise is broken, your reputations(名声), relationships and personal charm suffer. Take each promise you make seriously to make sure that you are not the one causing unnecessary distrust.
Promises are proofs(证明) of love, friendships, family and human connection. Actions speak louder than words. Promises are actions that affirm(声明) our love and connection with other people. Whether that connection is through friendships, family or strangers, promises affirm that we want to pass on our feelings to others.
Promises are a necessary part of building our relationships. Making and keeping promises plays an important role in our lives. So here’s a word of advice;always keep your promises.

Passage 4
You can hardly pay no attention to hunger. Hunger has many different causes, according to Dr. Monique Tello, from Harvard Medical School.
The first cause may be medical problems. “If a person always feels hungry and can't put on weight or even loses weight, he should go to the hospital. For people with Type 1 diabetes(糖尿病), their body isn't able to process sugar(分解糖). They eat a lot, but still lose weight and they feel terrible.” Tello said.
If it isn't a medical cause, the problem could be in the head. It’s reasonable to be hungry every three to five hours. However, you are likely to eat often and a lot after watching food on TV or social media. Also, the more you eat, the larger your stomach gets, and the more you want to eat. A person's state of mind can play a role, too. Research has shown that stress can increase levels of ghrelin(饥饿激素). Pressure and worry can send people looking into the fridge when they're not truly hungry.
Another reason may be the lifestyle. Sometimes the ▲ why a person is always hungry is that he eats too little, exercises too much, or both.
So, what are the solutions?First, reduce your time on watching food advertisements on TV and social media. In addition, say no to food if you're not really hungry. Finally, change your diet by eating more food high in protein(蛋白质) and healthy fats.

Passage 5
If you feel stressed at school, what can you do to make yourself happier? Some may eat their favorite food or listen to some music. Others may go for a walk or get some exercise. A new study found another great way to lower students’ stress—playing with dogs.
Scientists studied 105 students between the ages of eight and nine. 35 trained dogs and their trainers also took part in the test. The children were divided into 3 groups. The students in the first group spent 20 minutes with a dog and its trainer. They watched the trained dogs perform and even played with them. They did this twice a week for 4 weeks. The second group spent the same amount of time(时长) doing exercise to relax. The last group did neither of these things.
During this time, the scientists recorded the students' cortisol levels(皮质醇水平). Cortisol is a stress hormone(激素). The more stressed you feel, the more cortisol you will have in your body. What did the scientists find? Both the second and third groups showed rises in cortisol levels. The first group, however, showed no big increase. And the children in this group had the lowest cortisol levels right after playing with the dogs.
According to the study, students enjoy playing with dogs, and it helps them become happier. The stress hormone falls over time this way, which is good for students’ health. But here comes the next question: Is 20 minutes of playtime with a dog the best amount of time? Scientists are going to keep working to find out the answer.

Passage 6
With the days getting colder, you may want to turn into a bear and sleep through the whole winter. Actually, scientists are looking for ways to let humans hibernate(冬眠), too!
So what is hibernation? During hibernation, an animal’s heart beats and breathing slow down. They can save energy when there’s little food in the winter months.
Japanese researchers have found the secret behind hibernation—the “Q neurons(神经元)”. These neurons in animals’ brains can put them into a hibernation condition. The researchers also did surgeries(手术) after turning on the mice’s “Q neurons”. It turned out that the surgeries caused less damage to the mice during their hibernation.
According to the team, humans’ “Q neurons” cannot be turned on and off as easily as the mice' s. But they are confident in copying the mice’ s hibernation in humans. That means we could let people in surgery “hibernate”, causing less damage to their bodies.
In recent years, more scientists are getting to know the advantages of hibernation. For example, US scientist Katherine Grabek found that when the monkey hibernates, it cleans out harmful brain parts that are related to Alzheimer’s(老年痴呆症) in humans. They hope to design medicine for humans based on this finding.
Some studies in rabbits showed that, during hibernation, their bodies age more slowly. This also provides new ideas for making humans live longer in the future, according to Rachel Howard, a leading reporter in New Scientist magazine.
Such promising findings may help people solve health problems that have troubled humans for centuries.

Passage 7
Most of us have told a lie at one time or another. However, scientists found that lying can harm your brain(大脑). It may stop you from doing other important tasks.
When you tell the truth, your brain doesn't have to do any extra(额外的) work. But lying takes much more work.
Imagine you’re late to class. The teacher asks why and you decide to lie. So you say: “I picked up a book from the library,” Your teacher asks: “The book I assigned(布置) last time?” Then you must decide how to answer the question. If you say yes, the teacher might ask to see the book. So you might say: “No.” Now you have to think of a book title. You need to make sure it’s a book the library actually has. See? When you lie, your brain works a lot more to keep the lie from falling apart.
You just gave your brain a ton of extra work. An area called the prefrontal cortex(前额皮质) does the work. It’s the part in charge of short memory. That area also takes care of planning, problem-solving and self-control.
Using too much brainpower to lie means there’s less available for other things-like solving math problems. Lying is even harder for young people. The prefrontal cortex is not fully developed until age 25. So when young people are busy with lying, they’ll have a harder time doing other things. So think twice before lying next time!

Passage 8
Snow forests make up about 30% of the world's total forest areas. These wonderful woodlands are not as famous as the Amazon or other rainforests but they are very important for Earth's health.
Snow forests are found in the far north of the world, in areas that are quite cold and usually have a lot of snowfall. They run for thousands of miles and cover about 17% of Earth’s total land area.
Snow forests have very cold winters that can last up to six months but even so, they are home to many kinds of animals, including foxes, mice, reindeer(驯鹿) and wolves.
These woodlands have an important job—helping to absorb(吸收) carbon-based gases, which can cause climate change. However, snow forests are facing several dangers. Trees are being cut down faster and faster for their wood, which can be used for buildings. Some forests are being cleared to make space for new roads and houses, or to allow coal mining and oil and gas industries to grow. This leads to less and less living space for wildlife. As the world gets warmer and weather changes, the risk of fires in snow forests rises. In recent years, Canada and Russia have seen very dangerous fires.
Environmental and wildlife groups around the world are working hard to make snow forests become protected areas. This means that logging is not allowed or controlled in some areas and the forests are seen as areas of special scientific interest. When wood is needed, tree replanting and careful forest management help to reduce the bad influence. Hopefully this means that the forest is managed in a way that it can survive and regrow.

One day, Tom went to the office to ask Mr. Smith a question after school. “ You always tell us to be kind and compassionate(有同情心的). But what’s compassion, Mr. Smith?”
After thinking, the smart teacher took Tom to the window. There was a beggar(乞丐) sitting on the street. While looking at him, they noticed that a well-dressed businessman passed by and gave the beggar five coins. After a while, a mother and a young girl went across the street. The girl noticed the beggar and handed him a flower in her hand.
Then Mr. Smith asked Tom, “Who do you think is more compassionate?”
“I think the businessman showed his compassion because he gave the beggar coin.” Tom said.
Mr. Smith smiled and said: “You could see that the businessman looked so haughty after giving the beggar five coins. He wanted to show off his money to people around him. At the same time, he wanted to tell people he is kind-hearted and that he likes to help others. However, the girl didn’t show anything off. She gave the beggar a flower just to share her happiness with him.”

Passage 12
Alex was ill. His doctor advised him not to go to work until he got well. He needed a rest. So Alex went to the country. The fresh air was good for his health. Then his holiday began. There he met Mr. Wilson, his neighbor, an old man.
During his holiday, Alex got some saplings(树苗). He gave some to Mr. Wilson. Both of them planted the same plants in their gardens. Alex watered his plants every day and looked after them carefully. Mr. Wilson gave a little water to his plants and didn’t care about them. Mr. Wilson’s plants were simple but looked good. Alex’s plants looked taller and greener.
One night, there was a heavy rain. The next morning, Alex saw his plants lying on the field. They broke off the roots (根). But the old man’s plants stood still. They looked good as usual. Alex was surprised and went to the old man, “We both grew the same plants together. I looked after my plants even better than you did. I gave them more water. But my plants broke off the roots, while yours didn’t. Why?”
The old man smiled and said, “You gave your plants more water, so they didn’t need to work for it. I gave my plants a little water, so their roots grew deeper to get more water. It made them stronger.”
