A child who enjoys a story usually likes to hear it told again in almost the same way. However, this doesn’t mean parents should see fairy tales (童话故事) as strict (严谨的) textbooks. It’s always better to tell a story in your own words instead of just reading it from a book. If a parent can make the story more interesting or suitable for the child’s age and situation, that’s even better.
Some people think fairy tales are bad for children because they might make them feel afraid or unhappy. To prove (证明) this, someone would need to do a careful study showing that children who read fairy tales feel more troubled by unkind actions than those who don’t. As for fears, I think they happen when children hear the story only once. If children hear it many times, they get used to it, and the fear turns into a fun challenge they can deal with.
There are also people who don’t like fairy tales because they think the stories aren’t real. They say giants, witches (女巫), two-headed dragons, magic carpets are not part of the real world. They believe children should learn about real life by studying history instead of enjoying the strange parts of fairy tales. I don’t know how to argue (争论) with them. If their ideas are correct, why will children not start believing in fairy tales, like thinking everyday items could magically turn into something they are not? No fairy tale has ever said it was a true picture of the real world, and no smart child has ever thought that it was. In fact, if they read more fairy tales, they will find the truth.
29.Why does the writer think telling a story is better than reading it from a book? Because ________.
A.reading from a book can make the story clearer
B.telling a story makes it more interesting and fit for children
C.reading from a book takes too much time to finish
D.children are always bored with reading books themselves
30.What happens to a child’s fear of fairy tales if they hear the story many times?
A.The fear stays the same. B.The fear makes the child hate fairy tales.
C.The fear becomes fun and easier to deal with. D.The fear makes the child only like real-life stories.
31.What does the writer think of people saying fairy tales aren’t real?
A.Their ideas are right and we should think about them.
B.Their ideas are wrong and we don’t need to argue with them.
C.Their ideas are difficult to understand and they are crazy.
D.Their ideas are wrong and they don’t have good reasons.

People have told stories about Robin Hood for over 700 years. Nobody knows if he was a real person or an invented character. In the legends, Robin was extremely smart and humorous, he helped strangers, and later his kindness paid off.
The Merry Adventures of Robin Hood was just a young man, who was good at archery (射箭术). One day he was walking through Sherwood Forest, a royal hunting forest near Nottingham in England. Robin and his “Merry Men” always looked for rich people and asked them to their camp in Sherwood Forest. When they arrived, Robin gave them a good meal and played music for them. Then he took their gold away to help the poor. Robin became most famous for “robbing from the rich and giving to the poor.”
The Sheriff of Nottingham was Robin’s greatest enemy. He was cruel and treated the poor badly. It was his job to keep the woods safe and to make sure that nobody stole the king’s deer. He hated Robin because Robin was an outlaw. But most of all, he hated Robin because everyone else loved him. Living in China, I often see elderly people doing many fun activities. They practice tai chi, sing opera, dance, and even play with swords. These activities are usually done outside and help them stay active and social. I think this is great and wish it would happen in the UK more often.
My grandma lives in a nursing home in England. She plays bingo (宾果游戏) and sometimes listens to music, but she rarely does much outside or with others. This situation is usual for many of the UK’s elderly, as there isn’t a strong community that helps them stay socially active. There’s knitting (编织) and theater, but not much dancing in the parks or opera singing. Such outdoor group activities are just not part of the culture, and I think that’s a pity.
In China, elderly people stay active and social, which is good for their health. It’s also very cheap. A professor (教授) from the University of Chicago said that dancing in parks became popular in China in the 1990s. It helped women stay healthy and make friends, which is important for fighting loneliness in old age.
In the UK, many elderly people feel lonely. They don’t have many social activities, and this makes them feel isolated (孤独的). I hope the UK and other Western countries can learn from China. I want to see elderly people in the UK enjoying their later years, staying active, and being part of a healthy community.
36.How does the writer feel about elderly people’s activities in China?
A.They are boring. B.They are fun and healthy.
C.They cost too much money. D.They are only for young people.
37.Which fits the situation according to the text?

A.①-a, ②-b, ③-c B.①-b, ②-a, ③-c
C.①-c, ②-b, ③-a D.①-b, ②-c, ③-a
38.Why does the writer talk about the professor from the University of Chicago?
A.To explain dancing in parks is new in China.
B.To express elderly people in the UK hate dancing.
C.To share Western countries have better activities.
D.To help support the fact that activities help old people.
39.What is the writer’s wish?
A.Elderly people in China can have more activities.
B.More professors can study the activities of the elderly.
C.Elderly people in the UK can have more social activities.
D.The UK and other Western countries can keep their own culture.
40.What’s the best title for the text?

American and British people both speak English of course. But sometimes it does not seem like the same language. In fact, there are some important differences between British English and American English.
First of all, they sound very different. Often, Americans don’t say each word separately. They say several words together. Americans may say “I dunno” instead of “I don’t know.” Or they may say “Whaddya say?” instead of “What did you say?” However, the British are more careful in their speech. They usually say all the words and keep them separate.
Sound is not only the difference between British English and American English. Words sometimes have different meanings too. Some American words are never used in England. The same thing is true of some British words in America. For example, the vocabulary for cars and driving is very different. Americans drive trucks, but in England people drive lorries.
Many expressions are also different in the two countries. In England, if you are going to telephone your friends, you “phone them up”. In America, you “give them a call”. When you are saying goodbye in England you might say “Cheerio!” In America you might say “See you later.”
There’re also some differences in grammar. For example, Americans usually use the helping verb “do” when they ask a question. They say “Do you have a storybook?” But the British often leave out the helping verb. They say “Have you a storybook?”
All these differences can be confusing (易混淆的) if you are learning English. But most languages are like this. Languages change over time. When people live in separate places, the languages change in different ways.
Differences between British English and American English
British English
American English.
Sound
The British are more 56 in their speech. They usually say all the words and 57 them separate.
American people often say 58 words together. They don’t say each 59 separately.

People drive 61 in America.
Expressions
If the British want to telephone their friends, they’ll “ 62 them up”.
If the Americans want to telephone their friends, they’ll “give them a 63 ”.
64
British people often leave out the helping verb “do” when they ask a question.
Americans usually 65 the helping verb “do” when they ask a question.

【答案】29.B 30.C 31.D
【导语】本文探讨了童话故事在儿童成长中的作用,并反驳了一些对童话故事的负面看法。
29.细节理解题。 根据“It’s always better to tell a story in your own words instead of just reading it from a book. If a parent can make the story more interesting or suitable for the child’s age and situation, that’s even better.”可知,作者认为讲故事比从书中读故事更好,因为讲故事可以使故事更有趣且更适合孩子。故选B。
30.细节理解题。 根据“If children hear it many times, they get used to it, and the fear turns into a fun challenge they can deal with.”可知,如果孩子多次听到故事,他们的恐惧会变成一种有趣的挑战,并且更容易应对。故选C。
31.细节理解题。 根据“No fairy tale has ever said it was a true picture of the real world, and no smart child has ever thought that it was. In fact, if they read more fairy tales, they will find the truth.”可知,作者认为那些说童话故事不真实的人的观点是错误的,并且他们没有充分的理由。故选D。

There he got into trouble with a group of men. Among them, he killed the cousin of the Sheriff (郡长) of Nottingham. Robin became a legendary outlaw, and soon the leader of one hundred outlaws, known as his “Merry Men”.
