Passage3
Do you often buy things online? These days, online shopping is very popular, especially among young people. It has become a main way for them to buy anything they need. What’s good about online shopping?
One of the biggest advantages (优点) of online shopping is that it saves a lot of time. Instead of going to a store or supermarket, you can shop from your home, office, or anywhere else at any time you like. And you don’t have to wait in long lines. If you don’t like what you bought, you can easily give it back to the seller without even going outside.
Another great thing is that online shopping helps you save money. To interest more people, many online sellers offer bigger discounts (折扣) than stores. This means you can often buy the same thing at a lower price online.
Moreover, when you shop online, you can get beneficial advice from other shoppers’ reviews (评论). For example, if you are interested in a sweater, you can read reviews to find out what clothes match it well, how you choose the right size and so on. You can also see pictures shared by other shoppers to get a better idea of what the sweater is like.
However, online shopping isn’t perfect. Since you can’t see or touch the things before buying them, sometimes what you get isn’t exactly what you want. Also, some bad people may try to steal (窃取) your information and money from websites.

Passage20
①The United Nations (UN) has decided that 2025 is the year of glacier (冰川) protection. It has also set March 21, 2025, as the first yearly World Day for Glaciers to ask everyone to help save glaciers. You can think of glaciers as slowly moving ice and snow on land. Over time, the snow adds up and turns into glacier ice. Glaciers have shaped mountains and valleys (山谷) over Earth’s history. They are still moving and hanging land in many places today.
②Glaciers are not just important for the land. The water from glaciers is also good for rivers and seas. In some places, glaciers give water to people and animals. They help keep Earth’s temperature constant (恒温). They also hold 70% of Earth’s clean water. In areas like the Himalayas, many people need glacier water to live.
③However, climate change is making problems for glaciers. Many glaciers are disappearing (消失). There will be less water for people to drink and farm. It is also bad for animals and plants. To deal with the problem, China is using smart ideas to slow down glacier melting (融化), UNESCO said.
④One idea is to use special glacier blankets (毯子) to slow melting. At Dagu Glacier, these blankets covered 500 m2 and slowed melting by 34% (2020-2021). In Xinjiang’s Glacier No.1, thinner blankets worked even better, cutting summer melting by up to 70%. The blankets block sunlight to protect the ice.
⑤Scientists also create artificial snow (人造雪) to help glaciers stay cooler and melt more slowly. In April and May 2023, scientists did this in the Bailanghe Glacier. The glacier grew 5.9 percent bigger. It is also important to watch glaciers carefully. Scientists use special devices (设备) to watch glaciers. This helps scientists know how glaciers are changing. By studying the numbers, scientists can find better ways to protect glaciers.

Supermarkets are trying out new computers that make shopping carts (购物车) more intelligent (智能的). They will help shoppers find paper cups or toilet soap, and keep a record of the bill.

Passage24
We all know how to enjoy our food. However, have you thought of what happens after a dish has been served to the diner? The ideal (理想的) picture would be this: the chef sees his hard work being rewarded (回报) when the plates are empty after the meal. Sadly, things are not like that. You can see unfinished food on plates left on the tables almost every day.
My dear students, this is not good. It shows that little thought has been put in stopping food wastage (浪费).
Let’s learn from a chef in a Japanese restaurant who says that he will always respect (尊重) the fish he cooks. Why? Simply because he knows the dangers which the fisherman always faces in order to bring the fish to him. Therefore, by not wasting any part of the fish, and by cooking excellently every time, the chef is respecting the fisherman’s work.
Similarly, we should respect our food more. Just think of the poor and homeless who have not eaten for days because of a war or a natural disaster. Think. Wouldn’t it be good if we shared our food, instead of throwing away what we can’t finish?
Now, the Environmental Club would like our students to help people in need. Instead of buying lots of food you might not be able to finish, buy a small amount; you can also take food from home. Give some of your pocket money to the Club so we could buy some food or biscuits to give to the needy; or, you could give some of these food to the Club if you have any at home.
So, I hope to see every one of you playing your part to stop food wastage. Respect your food and share the joy of living well through giving food to those in need.

One day, on the way home from school, my mom told me she was going to make some new rules for me, for my brothers and sisters. Before this, we knew she wanted us to be good, but we really didn’t have any rules. Well, Mom took care of that. On Sunday she started giving us some rules. Clean your rooms every other day.
In short, online shopping provides convenience (便利) for us in daily life, but it does have some problems. Therefore, it’s important to be careful when shopping online.

Going green seems to be a fashion for a lot of people these days, but for the two of us, going green is not a fashion but a lifestyle.
On April 22, 2019, we started our plan to go green every day for a year. This meant doing 365 different green things. For example, we reused water and cut down the use of our energy. Also, we had to think of something different to do and this was not easy.
With the idea of going green every single day for a year, Our Green Year started. My wife and I taught people how they could go green in their lives. We hoped we could show people all the green things that we could do to make the environment better. We wanted to push the idea that every little bit helps it a lot.
During Our Green Year, we completely changed our lifestyles. We now shop at organic (有机的) stores. We eat less meat, choosing green food. We greatly cut down our buying. We give away half of what we have on the Internet. We clean our home with vinegar (醋) and lemon juice instead of chemical cleaners. We make our own butter, enjoying the smell of home-made bread. In our home office, anyone doing something ungreen may be punished (惩罚).

Supermarkets are trying out new computers that make shopping carts (购物车) more intelligent (智能的). They will help shoppers find paper cups or toilet soap, and keep a record of the bill.
The touch-screen devices (触屏装置) are on show at the Food Marketing Institute’s exhibition (展览) here this week, “These devices are able to create value and get you around the store quicker,” said Michael Alexander, manager of Springboard Retail Networks Company, which makes a smart cart computer called the Concierge.
Canadian stores will test the Concierge in July. A similar device, IBM’s “Shopping Buddy”, has recently been test-marketed at Stop & Shop stores in Massachusetts.
Neither device tells you how many fat grams (克) are in your cart, but they will quickly show you items (物品) on sale. The idea is to make it easier for people to buy, not to have second thoughts that maybe you should put something back on the shelf.
When people at the store, a shopper can use a preferred customer card, which is based on people’s shopping lists they have made at home, to start a system. This system will organize the trip around the store. If you’re looking for toothbrushes, you type in the word or pick it from a list, and a map will appear on the screen showing where you are and where you can find them.
The device also keeps a record of what you buy. When you’re finished, the device counts out your bill. Then you go to the checker or place your card into a self-checkout stand and pay.

And I am happy because it can help me save money. For example, the same food in the blind box is only ¥9.9 but is ¥30 in the food store. And I think it is also good for the environment.”
But some people are not happy about the boxes. “I don’t know what’s in the box and sometimes I have the same kind of food!” says Peter, a student in China. “Is the food really good and healthy?” Nick, a teacher in a school, asks. “Also, the food may not be nutritious (有营养的).

Passage25
Last year, a primary school in Fujian Province made a decision. It would no longer prepare meals in its own canteen (食堂). Instead, it would serve its students pre-made (预制的) food. The move quickly became a hot topic across the country. Many parents said that they were worried about food safety. Some of them even sent homemade meals to school at lunchtime every day.
The Ministry of Education (教育部) warns against introducing pre-made meals to schools. That’s mainly because there are not yet any national standards for such food. The market for pre-made meals has been developing quickly over the past few years. In 2022, there were more than 60,000 related companies (公司) in China. And the number is still growing. By 2026, the market will have reached more than one trillion yuan.
What has made pre-made meals so popular? They have many advantages. They’re quick and convenient to prepare. They also have a long shelf life (保存期). However, parents’ worries are not without reason. Pre-made food may be acceptable sometimes, but few people eat it every day. Naturally, parents don’t want their children to do so, either.
In fact, pre-made meals are all prepared by central kitchens. They’re not always unhealthy compared with freshly cooked food. The problem is how to make sure these companies follow all the hygiene rules when they cook and store food. For now, the pre-made food industry still has a long way to go.

Family rules help children learn what is and isn’t OK in the family. Following them can help children learn to follow rules in other places, so it’s not good to make rules too late. Good family rules are easy for children to understand.
Be ready for dinner at 7:00 p.m. That means sitting at the table, with clean hands. If Mom is having a meeting in the house, be very quiet. That means turning down the music and the TV. Be ready for bed at 9:30 p.m. and get up at 7:30 a.m. to get ready for school. Take out the litter on Monday morning before school. Clean the bathroom on Friday.
Following these rules isn’t too hard, and sometimes it’s even fun. But other times, it can be tough. For example, if your room is really dirty and you can’t finish cleaning it on that day, you have to finish it on the next day, along with something else you have to do. That isn’t easy.
Mom made these rules because she loves us a lot. She wants us to learn how to be on time, be clean and tidy and be polite. Every day, we try to follow her rules. These rules help make our family warm and happy. I feel lucky to grow up in such a family.
