The teacher starts with the basics: how to thread a needle. Then, over the course of the next 30 minutes, she shows the students a few different stitches (针法), along with how to mend a torn shirt. The sewing class is part of a free, one-day course at Austin Community College (ACC) called “Adulting 101”. The students range in age from their late teens to mid-40s.
ACC has been running such programmes for six years. The workshops are designed to help people “successfully navigate adulthood”, even those who, legally and practically, have been navigating it for quite some time. The topics vary from basic — how to dress appropriately for a job interview — to advanced, such as how to file income taxes.
The rise in need for adulting classes reflects, in part, the changing nature of childhood and adolescence, which have grown more digital and less physical. American teens spend up to nine hours each day on screens. TikTok and YouTube do offer handy tutorials on all manner of housework, but most young users of these platforms are more interested in dancing than dishwashers.
Keith Hayward, a professor of the University of Copenhagen, argued that there has been a generational shift and that young people are less mature than their ancestors were at the same age. They are escaping from responsibilities such as marriage, home owning and child-raising because “adulting is hard”, as one of his students put it. He adds that young people today are also less interested in what their elder try to offer. “If parents are not providing advice on life’s many essential tasks, you’re left with these classes picking up what you should have gained.”
Many will see adulting classes as proof of youngsters’ delayed development. But spoiled children do not acknowledge the gaps in their knowledge and try to fill them. Only a grown-up would willingly spend precious free time doing something as dull as learning how to mend a shirt.
24. Why is the “Adulting 101” course opened?
A. To teach digital skills. B. To make adult life smooth.
C. To train experienced tailors. D. To advance academic level.
25. What does the rise in need for adulting classes reflect about young people today?
A. Their nature of adulting. B. Their addiction to screens.
C. Their interest in housework. D. Their love for tutorials.
26. What is Keith Hayward’s attitude towards adulting classes?
A. Doubtful. B. Negative. C. Neutral. D. Positive.
27. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A. Adulting classes should be started earlier.
B. Practical skills is a sign of becoming mature.
C. Adulting classes are very dull for grown-ups.
D. Young people have a generation gap with their parents.

Tracking heart activity becomes more difficult when we move, a common limitation of many current wearable devices. But researchers at the University of Missouri have found inspiration in an unlikely source: the starfish.
Studying how starfish turn themselves over by coordinating (协调) their five arms, researchers Sicheng Chen and Zheng Yan from Mizzou’s College of Engineering developed a wearable device that imitates this structure. Their starfish-shaped monitor can track heart health in real-time, even during movement.
Unlike traditional wearables like smartwatches, which rely on a single contact point, this device uses five flexible arms that make multiple contact points with the skin near the heart. This design keeps it more stable, allowing it to collect clearer, more reliable heart data while the wearer is active. The device connects to a smartphone app, giving users real-time health insights and helping to detect potential heart issues early on.
“Similar to a starfish, our device has five arms, each equipped with sensors that capture both electrical and mechanical heart activity at the same time,” Chen said. “Most current devices focus on capturing only one signal or require separate devices to track multiple signals at the same time. This allows us to provide a more complete picture of someone’s heart health.”
The team developed an AI-powered system that learned from a large collection of heart data, including signals from both healthy individuals and people with heart disease. Using smart technology, the system leaves out movement-related disruptions (干扰) and analyzes heart signals to determine if someone’s heart is healthy or showing signs of trouble. The findings are shown on the smartphone app.
This AI-based approach correctly identifies heart conditions more than 90% of the time. Because the device has Bluetooth capability, doctors can review the data remotely, making it a convenient option for at-home monitoring between medical visits. “This is also a benefit over traditional clinical heart tests, which usually requires patients to stay still to get accurate results,” Chen said.
28. Which aspect of starfish inspired researchers?
A. Its special skin. B. Its body structure.
C. Its unique habitat. D. Its moving speed.
29. What advantages do the wearables have over traditional ones?
A. They connect to apps easily. B. They are convenient to wear.
C. They have a single contact point. D. They are stable with reliable data.
30. How does the AI-powered system work?
A By increasing the accuracy of tracking.
B. By shortening the process of medical visits.
C. By promoting the convenience of home use.
D. By storing the data of various heart problems.
31. What is stressed about the AI-based approach in the last paragraph?
A. Its market future. B. Its Bluetooth capability.
C. Its practical application. D. Its limtation in accuracy.

When asked how he “chooses” words for a translation, Damion Searls, a famous translator, likens (比作) it to asking a reader how they “choose” what Mr. Darcy, the main character in the novel Pride and Prejudice, looks like when reading it. Neither is so much a choice, he says, but a response shaped by the text.
Translating is some kind of reading and some kind of writing joined together. If you unpack what reading is, you’re going to get most of the way to the philosophy of translation. According to Searls, translation isn’t that different from other forms of writing in English. However, what distinguishes translation is the way translators read, a close reading that engages deeply with a language’s structure.
When “reading like a translator,” Searls said he must identify which linguistic elements can be omitted (省略) in English and which are intentional stylistic choices by the author. When translating Uwe Johnson’s novel, Anniversaries, for example, he noticed frequent “not this but that” constructions (“the train leaves at not 7:00 but 6:00”), which are more common in German than in English.
While it would be easy to rephrase for smoother English, he realized Johnson used this pattern deliberately to express a personal vision. “We can’t just erase it because it’s not just the German language: It’s him, the author,” Searls said.
Searls also described his process when approaching a new translation. He usually does a slow and precise first draft, which allows him to revise later without referring too much to the source material. “As much as you can avoid looking back at the original will help you direct your attention to: Does this sound like it should sound in English?”
When asked how to reach the point of feeling like a reader skilled enough to translate, Searls responded that while some believe mastering the source language is necessary for translation, he sees more nuance (细微差异). Though he knows Norwegian well enough to translate the works of Jon Fosse, he wouldn’t necessarily feel comfortable translating just any Norwegian book.
32 What was Searls’ purpose in mentioning Mr. Darcy?
A. To explain the word choice. B. To analyze Mr. Darcy’s roles.
C. To stress the text understanding. D. To compare the different contexts.
33. What do we learn from Damion Searls’ translation of “Anniversaries”?
A. He keeps the author’s unique language features.
B. He changes German expressions for smooth English.
C. He makes the translation simple with English structure.
D. He values the readability of the translated text over the author’s style.
34. What does the last paragraph mainly convey?
A. Translation is like reading. B. Translation is a fine-tuning process.
C. Translation ends up with perfection. D. Translation improves when mastered.
35. Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A. From Culture to Culture: Bridging the Meanings
B. The Choices of Word: A Translator’s Perspective
C. From Reading to Translation: A Creative Process
D. The Art of Translation: Reading Between Languages

In the heart of Tennessee lies the charming town of Pigeon Forge, a destination known for its breathtaking landscapes and warm-hearted community. The towering peaks, dotting with a vigorous grassland, seemed to stretch towards the heavens, while the gentle mist that clung (依附) to the slopes added an air of mystery.
As we drove along the winding roads of Pigeon Forge, the beauty of the Great Smoky Mountains enveloped us, and the stresses of daily life melted away in the face of such inspiring beauty. But news came that the hurricane was strengthening in our home, Brandon, Florida, making it necessary for us to extend our stay to remain safe.
One day, we went to The Old Mill restaurant, known for its tasty Southern cuisine and historic charm. As we approached the restaurant, however, our car broke down on the side of the road. A low spirit washed over us as we realized that we were trapped in an unfamiliar place, miles away from the nearest garage.
After seemingly centuries, a car came along and we noticed a gentleman in it. With a sense of upset, we approached and told him why we were here and asked if he could help us with a jump start. To our relief, he happily agreed to assist us, his kind eyes and warm smile putting us at ease. As he skillfully connected the jumper cables and brought our car back to life, we couldn’t help but feel grateful for his assistance.
As we went inside the restaurant to put our names on the waitlist, we were greeted by a warm and welcoming atmosphere. Much to our amazement, the gentleman who had helped us with the car came up to us and introduced himself as Mo, the manager of The Old Mill. He got us a table right away, despite the restaurant being busy. On this day full of unexpected turns, the gentleman was like a warm candlelight in the darkness.

【答案】24. B 25. B 26. D 27. B
【解析】
【导语】本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了奥斯汀社区学院(ACC)开设的“成人101”免费课程。
【24题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段“ACC has been running such programmes for six years. The workshops are designed to help people “successfully navigate adulthood”, even those who, legally and practically, have been navigating it for quite some time.(行政协调会执行这类方案已有六年。这些讲习班旨在帮助人们“成功地度过成年期”,即使是那些在法律上和实际上已经度过了相当一段时间的人)”可知,“Adulting 101”的目的是使成人生活顺利。故选B项。
【25题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段“The rise in need for adulting classes reflects, in part, the changing nature of childhood and adolescence, which have grown more digital and less physical. American teens spend up to nine hours each day on screens.(对成人课程需求的增加,在一定程度上反映了儿童和青少年性质的变化,他们变得更加数字化,更少身体接触。美国青少年每天花在屏幕上的时间长达9个小时)”可知,对成人课程需求的增加反映了当今年轻人对屏幕的沉迷。故选B项。
【26题详解】
推理判断题。根据倒数第二段“Keith Hayward, a professor of the University of Copenhagen, argued that there has been a generational shift and that young people are less mature than their ancestors were at the same age. They are escaping from responsibilities such as marriage, home owning and child-raising because “adulting is hard”, as one of his students put it. He adds that young people today are also less interested in what their elder try to offer. “If parents are not providing advice on life’s many essential tasks, you’re left with these classes picking up what you should have gained.”(哥本哈根大学(University of Copenhagen)教授Keith Hayward认为,这是一种代际变化,年轻人比他们的祖先在同一年龄时更不成熟。他们逃避婚姻、买房和抚养孩子等责任,因为正如他的一个学生所说,“成人很难”。他补充说,如今的年轻人对长辈试图提供的东西也不那么感兴趣了。“如果父母没有在人生的许多重要任务上提供建议,你就只能在这些课程中学习你本应学到的东西。”)”可知,Keith Hayward认为能在这些课程中学习你本应学到的东西,所以态度是积极的。故选D项。
【27题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“Many will see adulting classes as proof of youngsters’ delayed development. But spoiled children do not acknowledge the gaps in their knowledge and try to fill them. Only a grown-up would willingly spend precious free time doing something as dull as learning how to mend a shirt.(许多人将成人课程视为青少年发育迟缓的证据。但是被宠坏的孩子不会承认他们知识上的空白,并试图去填补它们。只有成年人才会愿意把宝贵的空闲时间花在学习缝补衬衫这种无聊的事情上)”可知,从本段可推出实用技能是成熟的标志。故选B项。

A. By increasing the accuracy of tracking.
B. By shortening the process of medical visits.
C. By promoting the convenience of home use.
D. By storing the data of various heart problems.
31. What is stressed about the AI-based approach in the last paragraph?
A. Its market future. B. Its Bluetooth capability.
C. Its practical application. D. Its limtation in accuracy.
【答案】28. B 29. D 30. A 31. C

32. What was Searls’ purpose in mentioning Mr. Darcy?
D He values the readability of the translated text over the author’s style.

Paragraph 2:
After the discussion with my husband, I came up with a good idea.
_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】Paragraph 1:
Just as we were finishing up, our waitress approached us with an envelope. “This is from Mo,” she said with a smile. Inside, we found a handwritten note expressing his hope that we enjoyed our meal and a gift card to cover our dinner. Overwhelmed by his generosity, we looked around for Mo to thank him, but he had already disappeared into the busy restaurant. As we stepped outside, the evening air felt warmer, as if kindness itself had softened the chill.
Paragraph 2:
After the discussion with my husband, I came up with a good idea. We decided to pay Mo’s kindness forward. The next morning, we visited a local grocery store, bought supplies, and donated them to a nearby shelter in Pigeon Forge. Seeing the grateful smiles of those in need, we realized that Mo’s act of goodwill had sparked a chain reaction. Sometimes, the smallest gestures — like a helping hand or a warm meal — could light up the darkest moments, just as Mo had done for us.
