My Italian family was loud and chaotic. There was a lot of yelling, and events swirled around me so fast that they made me feel uncomfortable in my own skin. I didn’t think anyone wanted to know what I thought or gave me guides to deal with how I was feeling.
Then I met someone who changed all that and I was fascinated. For an hour every day I would sit as close as I could to watch the television show, Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood. But it was more than a television show to me. It was a visit with a smart, kind friend and his caring eyes told me I was special.
Through the camera, he looked at me and asked me a question, and then waited for me to respond. It made me feel as if what I had to say was important. When something scared me, like the movie The Wizard of Oz, Mister Rogers had the actress, Margaret Hamilton, on the show who played the wicked witch. Together they talked about being afraid of the witch and how much of it was green makeup and then began to take all the makeup off, showing a smiling Margaret underneath it all. It helped me be less afraid, and fueled my interest in the power of TV. Mister Rogers talked about tough things, and gave me some guides as to what to do, instead of telling me to “just get over it”.
As an adult, I value having people in my real life who make me feel special. I take note of small things every day that bring me happiness. It’s the little things that make a big impact. I call them my little life clues. They are small but mighty. I now dedicate my life to creating shows for kids that have stories full of these little life lessons.
4. How did the author feel in his Italian family?
A. Bored and anxious. B. Ignored and lonely.
C. Tired and frustrated. D. Nervous and stressed.
5. What did Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood mean to the author?
A. A relaxing program. B. An ordinary TV show.
C. An encounter with a friend. D. A source of fascination with TV.
6. How did Mister Rogers help the author deal with fear?
A. By sharing his own stories. B. By using wise talks to explain it.
C. By encouraging him to be brave. D. By persuading him to accept it.
7. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A. Small events make the author special. B. The author takes small things for granted.
C. Small events shape the author’s perspective. D. The author creates kids’ shows to revisit childhood.

Recent studies suggest we might not always consciously know we are encountering fake news. Neuroscience reveals that biomarkers such as the heart rate, eye movements, and brain activity can subtly change in response to false and real content. These biomarkers may be “tellers” that indicate if we have been taken in or not. To tackle the harm from false content on social media, data scientists are recruiting the large language models (LLMs) to spot fake news. With better detection, AI fake news checking systems may be able to warn of, and ultimately minimize the serious harm from deepfakes, false advertising, and misinformation.
The AI fake news checker takes shape by using findings from human eye movement data and electrical brain activity that shows what types of false content has the greatest impact neurally, psychologically and emotionally. By analyzing these data, a fake news checking system can personalize fake news detection based on individual interests, personality, and emotional reactions. This allows the system to detect and anticipate which content might trigger the most severe reaction and identify when people are most likely to be deceived.
However, detection is only the first step. What comes next is customizing the safeguards, which requires building systems that could interfere some sort of digital countermeasures to fake news, such as warning labels, links to credible content and even asking people to try to consider different perspectives when they read something.
In fact, such technology is already being trialed. Researchers in the US have studied how people interact with a personalized AI fake news checker of social media posts. It learned to reduce the number of posts in a news feed to only those it considered true.
Despite these efforts, the challenge remains. News content is often not completely false or true, but partially accurate. This is because the fast pace of news cycles means that information considered accurate at one time may later be found inaccurate, or vice versa. So, the system has its work cut out. Even under the most favorable circumstances, where data science and behavioral science are confident about the scale of the harm fake news might cause, AI applications might still be poor substitutes for simpler but more effective solutions.
8. What is the possible benefit of AI fake news checking systems?
A. They can react to biomarker changes. B. They can totally get rid of deepfakes.
C. They can give warnings about false content. D. They can stop the spread of false advertising.
9. How does the AI fake news checker perform detection?
A. By analyzing personal information. B. By monitoring daily behaviors.
C. By changing emotional reactions. D. By adjusting individual properties.
10. What does the underlined word “countermeasures” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A. Facilities. B. Solutions. C. Permits. D. Signals.
11. What is the author’s attitude towards AI fake news checking systems?
A. Optimistic. B. Unfavorable. C. Neutral. D. Indifferent.
D
A bamboo species, known as henon bamboo (毛金竹), only blossoms once every 120 years. Though this may appear to be a long time to postpone blossoming, the bamboo dies soon after flowering, so don’t be too quick to criticize.
Botanists don’t get many opportunities to investigate how the plants regenerate because they flower over a century apart. The last big flowering event occurred in 1908, while there was minor blossoming between 1903 and 1912, putting the next major occurrence around 2028.
However, in 2020, Hiroshima University researchers discovered a plant that bloomed early to beat the crowds, taking advantage of the opportunity to explore how it regenerates. They launched a study on a colony (群) consisting of 334 “culms (秆)”— the woody, jointed stems of bamboo. To their astonishment, over the course of three years, they found that approximately 80% of the culms that had bloomed didn’t produce any seeds. By the end of 2022, all the culms in the study site had died, and there was no sign of new culms growing from the root systems.
“All culms died in the study site, with no sign of regeneration by seed, culm, or dwarf ramet (矮秆分株) production apparent,” the researchers wrote in their paper. “These results suggest a dark future for henon bamboo in Japan: The species may be hard to regenerate after flowering.” This situation potentially disturbs the ecosystems that the bamboo species helps support, because this species covers vast areas of land in Japan. It will not only mean economic losses to local industries that rely on bamboo as a material, but it may also lead to environmental problems.
“Natural services given to people by bamboo includes the prevention of soil erosion and landslides, as well as vegetation cover,” the lead researcher Toshihiro Yamada said. To better understand its characteristics, he intends to study the bamboo in China, its original home. “Do they produce seeds in China? I’d like to study that while observing the Japanese populations of bamboo,” he said.
12. Why did the author list flowering years in Paragraph 2?
A. To highlight the rareness of flowering. B. To calculate the length of the intervals.
C. To show the challenge of the research. D. To stress the worth of time gaps in botany.
13. What’s the finding of the research in 2020?
A. Nearly 80% culms failed to produce seeds. B. By 2022, no seeds grew from flowers.
C. All the bloomed culms didn’t yield seeds. D. The bamboo hardly regenerated after flowering.
14. What can we learn from Toshihiro Yamada?
A. He will further study henon bamboo.
B. Henon bamboo poses threats to Japan.
C. He will introduce novel bamboo species from China.
D. Henon bamboo serves as vegetation cover.
15. What’s the main idea of the passage?
A. Henon bamboo’s future is unclear.
B. Henon bamboo in Japan struggles to regenerate.
C. Early blooming of henon bamboo brought surprises.
D. The study reveals low seed production of henon bamboo.

Listen carefully to a spoken conversation and you’ll notice that the speakers use a lot of little words — mm-hmm, um, huh and the like — that don’t convey any information about the topic of the conversation itself. ____16____ But these little words may be much more important than that. A few linguists now think that far from being garbage — they may be crucial traffic signals to regulate the flow of conversation as well as tools to negotiate mutual understanding.
“One in every seven utterances (话语,言论) is one of these things,” says Dingemanse, who explores the use of interjections (感叹词) — short utterances of just a word or two that are not part of a larger sentence. “You’re going to find one of those little guys flying by every 12 seconds. Apparently, we need them.” ____17____ In a survey of 31 languages around the world, Dingemanse and his colleagues found that all of them used a short, neutral syllable similar to “Huh?” as a repair signal, probably because it’s quick to produce.
____18____ An “um” or “uh” from the speaker, for example, is a signal that they’re about to pause, but they aren’t finished speaking. A quick “Huh?” or “What?” from the listener, on the other hand, can signal a failure of communication that the speaker needs to repair.
Other interjections serve as what some linguists call “continuers”, such as “mm-hmm” — signals from the listeners that they’re paying attention and the speakers should keep going. ____19____ Because “mm-hmm” is made with a closed mouth. It’s clear that the signaler does not intend to speak.
Indeed, these little words go right to the heart of language and its purpose. ____20____ And that is the main reason for language being so successful. These small words are an indispensable (不可或缺的) part of our language, and without them, we would not have complex language.
A. Beyond that, this need seems to be universal.
B. It is like a tool kit for conducting interactions.
C. Word forms structurally match their functions.
D. And we don’t need to pay special attention to them.
E Language arises from the necessity for human interaction.
F. Numerous interjections serve to regulate the flow of conversation.
G. For decades, linguists dismissed such utterances as insignificant noise.

Miss Brown was very popular among her students. She always wore a gentle smile and greeted everyone warmly. Her class was always full of laughter and questions, challenging them to think in a unique way.
In one class, she introduced an unusual game called “The Traveling Note”. With a twinkle in her eye, she handed each student a blank sheet of paper and explained the rules, “Each of you is to create something — a quote, a story, a drawing, or a joke — that would inspire others to pass it on in our school. The note that travels the farthest and lasts the longest will be the winner.”
The challenge immediately ignited (点燃) a spark of creativity and competition among students. Some students wrote profound quotes, believing wisdom would travel farthest. Others penned touching stories, hoping to stir emotions and ensure their note’s journey continued. A few drew beautiful pictures, while the class clown added humor with jokes. Someone even promised good luck for those who passed the note on. Each student was confident that their work would secure victory.
Soon, it was time to submit the paper. To everyone's surprise, Emily, a shy but smart girl, handed in a blank sheet of paper only with a single line at the bottom: “Please add your own thoughts, drawings, messages, etc. in your own style to the note and pass it on.” All the classmates laughed at her, claiming her idea would be the first to fail.
But Miss Brown just collected the paper and said nothing, a knowing smile spreading across her face. She distributed all notes randomly. Then, the passing began quietly, with each student handling the paper they received without knowing its origin.

【答案】Dear friends from Australia,
Welcome to our school! It’s my honor to introduce our school’s club activities to you.
Our school offers a variety of clubs. The English club organizes activities like English debates and storytelling. The art club provides a platform for students to show their creativity through painting and handicrafts. There is also a sports club where students can play different sports and keep fit. We believe these activities not only enrich our school life but also help us develop our skills.
Hope you’ll have a great time during your visit to our school!
Yours,
Li Hua

【答案】
Days passed, and the moment finally arrived. Miss Brown asked everyone to bring back the notes they had received. Students presented their works one by one. Some quotes and stories remained almost untouched, while a few pictures had minor scribbles. But when Emily’s note was shown, the whole class gasped. The blank paper was now filled with colorful drawings, heartfelt stories, inspiring quotes, and funny jokes from different hands. It had truly become a collective masterpiece that integrated everyone’s creativity and emotions. Miss Brown announced with a bright smile, “Emily’s note has traveled through the most hands and collected the richest content. She is the winner!”
Emily gathered her courage and walked up to the platform. Her face was blushing, but her eyes sparkled with excitement and pride. “I just thought,” she stammered, “that everyone’s ideas are unique and valuable. When we combine them, they can create something far more wonderful than any single piece of work.” Her words triggered thunderous applause. From then on, Emily was no longer the shy girl ignored by others. And the “Traveling Note” game became a tradition in the school, reminding everyone of the power of cooperation and the beauty of shared creativity.
