How Long to Spend at the Met
The museum is massive. It also has a dense collection of paintings and sculptures. You could easily spend the entire day or more inside, but that will really depend on why you’re headed to NYC.
I can tell you from experience that 3 hours tends to be the limit for most people. After that, you may get a bit tired — unless you have a deep passion for art. Personally, I stick by that same rule. Your mind can only absorb so much beauty at one time!
If you’re an avid (狂热的) museum-goer and really want to spend longer than that, then I highly recommend taking a break in a café or sitting in a nice spot every 75 minutes or so. If you go in the afternoon, then a break means a cocktail (鸡尾酒)!
1. On which days is the Metropolitan Museum of Art closed?
A. Mondays. B. Wednesdays. C. Fridays. D. Sundays.
2. How much should a 13-year-old student pay to visit the Met?
A. $30. B. $22. C. $17. D. Free.
3. What advice is given to museum lovers planning a lengthy visit to the Met?
A. Taking a break every 75 minutes.
B. Visiting the museum in the morning.
C. Booking a museum guide in advance.
D. Absorbing as much beauty as possible.

They were once popular mainly with hikers, poor people, and students. No adult who cared even a little about fashion would be seen with one. But now, backpacks have become more widely accepted. Young people are now choosing them over briefcases and tote bags. Sales in America rose to a new high recently.
“Twenty years ago, you couldn’t wear a backpack into work,” says Taylor Welden, creative director at Carryology, a platform for designers and writers who are enthusiastic about bags. That has changed. Andy Fallshaw, a bagmaker, compares backpacks to sneakers. Once a niche product worn by athletes, sneakers now are everywhere, even on fashion runways.
What changed? Workplaces have become more relaxed; at the same time backpacks are being designed to look more fashionable. New materials make backpacks seem fancier than the old ones. Higher baggage fees might have boosted backpack use: People want to carry more on the plane to avoid the cost, and it’s easier to carry weight in a backpack than with a single shoulder bag. Longer trips to the office have also changed people into daily “backpackers”.
People have carried things on their backs for thousands of years. Ötzi, a man who lived 5,300 years ago, had a wooden backpack. In the early 1900s, an American added zippers (拉链) to make them lighter. In the 1960s, Murray and Jan created JanSport with new designs and sections.
A fresh generation of small, fancy bag makers is doing really well and experimenting with new, durable (耐用的) fabrics. Packolab, based in Ukraine, sells backpacks that cost around$400; they are so popular that the firm has started using a lottery (彩票) system to manage demand. Fashion brands, from Chanel to Saint Laurent, have taken notice, too. In 2023 Dior, partnered with Mystery Ranch, a bag designer in Montana best known for making kit for firefighters, hunters and soldiers, to create a limited-edition backpack with a $4,000 price label. Even established bagmakers are following the pack.
8. How did adults who were concerned with fashion previously perceive backpacks?
A. They viewed backpacks as stylish.
B. They regarded backpacks essential.
C. They considered backpacks practical.
D. They thought backpacks less fashionable.
9. What do the underlined words “a niche product” in Paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. A widely used item in daily life.
B. A fashionable item for everyone.
C. A specialized item with limited appeal.
D. A high-quality item with a luxury price label.
10. Which of the following would be the best title for the text?
A. The Future of Backpacks
B. The History of Backpacks
C. Backpacks: A Trendy Item for All Ages
D. Backpacks: From Hiking to High Fashion
11. From where is the text most likely sourced?
A. A fashion magazine. B. A travel guidebook.
C. A history textbook. D. A business report.
【答案】8. D 9. C 10. D 11. A
根据第一段前两句“They were once popular mainly with hikers, poor people, and students. No adult who cared even a little about fashion would be seen with one. (它们曾经主要受徒步旅行者、穷人和学生的欢迎。没有一个稍微关心时尚的成年人会背着它出现。)”可知,以前关心时尚的成年人认为背包不够时尚。故选D项。
【9题详解】
词句猜测题。根据划线词所在句“Once a niche product worn by athletes, sneakers now are everywhere, even on fashion runways. (运动鞋曾经是运动员穿的a niche product,现在却无处不在,甚至出现在时尚T台上。)”可知,运动鞋曾经只是运动员穿的专业产品,现在却变得非常普遍,甚至出现在时尚秀场上。由此可推知,划线词组“a niche product”意为“一种有有限吸引力的专业产品”,与C项“A specialized item with limited appeal. (一种有有限吸引力的专业产品)”意思一致。故选C项。
【10题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,结合第一段第三、四句“But now, backpacks have become more widely accepted. Young people are now choosing them over briefcases and tote bags.
纵览全文,特别是最后一段前三句“A fresh generation of small, fancy bag makers is doing really well and experimenting with new, durable (耐用的) fabrics. Packolab, based in Ukraine, sells backpacks that cost around $400; they are so popular that the firm has started using a lottery (彩票) system to manage demand. Fashion brands, from Chanel to Saint Laurent, have taken notice, too. (新一代小型时尚背包制造商做得很好,正在尝试使用新型耐用面料。总部位于乌克兰的Packolab公司销售的背包价格约为400美元;它们非常受欢迎,以至于该公司已经开始使用彩票系统来管理需求。从香奈儿到圣罗兰等时尚品牌也注意到了这一点。)”可知,文章提到了背包的设计、时尚品牌的参与以及背包在时尚界的地位,所以这些内容更可能出现在时尚杂志中。故选A项。
D
A new study published in Nature Communications reveals that viewing nature can ease pain by reducing brain activity linked to pain perception (感知). Led by researchers from the University of Vienna and the University of Exeter, the study offers a promising foundation for new non-drug pain treatments.
The study used an fMRI scanner (扫描仪) to monitor the brain activity of 49 participants in Austria as they received pain through small electric shocks. When watching videos of natural scenes, participants reported feeling less pain, and scans showed changes in brain responses associated with pain processing. Advanced machine-learning analyzed brain networks related to pain, finding that raw sensory signals were reduced when viewing high-quality virtual nature scenes.
The study confirms previous findings that nature can reduce subjective reports of pain and marks the first clear demonstration of how natural environments influence the brain, protecting it from unpleasant experiences. Lead author Max Steininger explained that numerous studies have shown people report less pain when exposed to nature, but the fundamental reasons were previously unclear. The study provides evidence from brain scans that this effect is genuine, although the pain-relieving effect was around half that of painkillers.
The paper also provides insights into the healing (治愈的) potential of natural settings, addressing a longstanding problem. Over forty years ago, an important study by American researcher Roger Ulrich showed that hospital patients used fewer painkillers and recovered faster when their windows overlooked green space. The new findings provide the first convincing explanation for why Ulrich’s patients might have experienced less pain and demonstrate how virtual nature encounters could bring these benefits to anyone, anywhere.
Coauthor Dr. Alex Smalley concluded that the study highlights how virtual encounters can bring the healing potential of nature to people when they can’t get outside. The study also serves as renewed evidence for the importance of protecting healthy natural environments, encouraging people to spend time in nature for the benefit of both the planet and people. The practical implications for non-drug treatments and new directions for research to better understand how nature impacts our minds are significant.
12. What does the new study published in Nature Communications mainly reveal?
A. The pain-relieving effect of viewing nature.
B. The development of non-drug pain treatments.
C. The importance of protecting natural environments.
D. The influence of natural environments on hospital patients.
13. How did the researchers monitor the brain activity of the participants?
A. By using electric shocks.
B. By using an fMRI scanner.
C. By asking them to report their feelings.
D. By analyzing their brain networks related to pain.
14. How effective is viewing nature in reducing pain compared to the use of painkillers?
A. It is much stronger. B. It is about the same.
C. It is half as effective. D. It is much less effective.
15. What can we infer about the study from the last paragraph?
A. It suggests people should avoid using painkillers.
B. It shows people should rely heavily on virtual nature.
C. It emphasizes the significance of protecting nature.
D It proves that virtual nature is better than real nature.
【答案】12. A 13. B 14. C 15. C

In the quiet town of San Rafael, California, Sean Currey, a man who had faced the struggles of homelessness for years, was searching for food in a trash bin (垃圾箱) behind a coffee shop. On December 9, while he was looking through the trash, his eyes caught sight of a wallet belonging to Evelyn Topper, an 80-year-old resident. Though Currey, who has been homeless on and off for years, briefly considered using the credit cards inside, he finally decided to return the wallet.
“It’s natural for anyone in my situation — cold and hungry — to think about using found credit cards,” Currey admitted. “But knowing I did the right thing outweighed the temptation (诱惑). I’d rather be hungry with a clear mind.”
The story happened when Evelyn picked up two drinks at Kamson Coffee. She paid for them and placed her wallet in her jacket pocket, forgetting to zip (拉拉链) it up. As she left the coffee shop, the wallet fell out unnoticed. It was only when she got home that she realized it was missing. Anxious, she searched her car and house and called the coffee shop, but no luck. “My wallet had everything — credit cards, debit cards, even my Medicare card. I was beside myself,” she recalled.
Fortunately, Currey found Evelyn’s wallet and, against all odds, chose to return it. Evelyn was excited when she received a call from an unknown number. It was Currey, telling her he had found her wallet in a trash bin and wanted to return it. “I couldn’t believe it. He could have taken everything and disappeared, but he chose honesty,” Evelyn said, tears of gratitude in her eyes. They met at her home, and Currey handed her the wallet with a smile. “I just wanted to help someone in need. It made me feel good to do something kind,” he said shyly.

1.续写词数应为150左右;

【答案】
Evelyn was deeply touched and shared the story with her 12-year-old granddaughter, Mikayla. Mikayla, inspired by Sean’s honesty and kindness, decided to do something special for him. She decided to organize a drive-by birthday fundraiser for him, eager to showcase the positive impact one good deed can have. She also set up a GoFundMe page. “What began as a lost wallet has progressed into a beautiful friendship with the entire family,” Mikayla wrote on the GoFundMe page. “This isn’t about charity; it’s about sympathy, the highest form of love.”
The community responded with a wave of support. Neighbors, friends, and even strangers came together to help Currey. The drive-by birthday fundraiser was a heartwarming event, with people driving by and dropping off donations, each contribution adding to the growing sense of unity. By the end of the day, Mikayla had raised $3,000 for Currey. The coffee shop even offered Currey free meals daily. The fundraiser not only improved Currey’s life but also brought the community closer together, proving that kindness and love can indeed make a world of difference.

A. Mondays. B. Wednesdays. C. Fridays. D. Sundays.
2. How much should a 13-year-old student pay to visit the Met?

Zakir Hussain passed away at a hospital in San Francisco on December 16, 2024. Hussain’s passing marks the end of an extraordinary era in music. Known for his innovative spirit, he transformed the tabla(a musical instrument)from a traditional accompaniment instrument into a globally celebrated solo (独奏) art form. His performances were a masterclass in improvisation (即兴演奏) , marked by breathtaking precision and an innate ability to connect with audiences across cultures.
Born to the famous tabla master Ustad Allarakha, Zakir Hussain displayed amazing talent from an early age, beginning his first international tour at just 12 years old. Over the next six decades, he became a global ambassador (大使) of Indian classical music. His partnership with his father changed the way people saw the tabla and inspired countless musicians worldwide.
Zakir Hussain’s career was marked by groundbreaking cooperation. In 1973, he worked with English guitarist John McLaughlin, violinist L. Shankar, and percussionist T. H. “Vikku” Vinayakram to create Shakti. This was a groundbreaking mix of Indian classical music and jazz that opened up new possibilities in world music. He continued to team up with musicians such as Mickey Hart, Yo-Yo Ma, and Charles Lloyd, always pushing boundaries and expanding the possibilities of his instrument.
In 2024, at the 66th Grammy Awards, Zakir Hussain received three Grammy Awards, bringing his career total to four. Throughout his career, Zakir Hussain received numerous honours, including the Padma Bhushan, Padma Vibhushan, and the Sangeet Natak Akademi Fellowship. In 2022, he was awarded the Kyoto Prize in Arts and Philosophy, one of the world’s highest honours in the arts.
In addition to his artistic achievements, Hussain was a devoted teacher. He was also deeply committed to cultural exchange, as evident in his work with the Indo-American Arts Council and other organizations.

D The influence of natural environments on hospital patients.
A It is much stronger.
D. It proves that virtual nature is better than real nature.
