One day after work, I walked into a restaurant in George Street and ordered something for dinner. About thirty minutes later, a group of three people came in and ordered theirs.
To my surprise, the group got served first. I watched as they began to eat. They showed off how well they got along with somebody in the restaurant. It seemed that they were laughing at me. So I decided to leave. I asked the waiter to cancel my order, but he said,“Yours is a special order being prepared by the boss himself. It’ll take a little more time.”
I had to sit down and waited patiently. Shortly after, my meal was served by six waiters. Unknown to me, the owner of the restaurant happened to be an old long-lost friend of mine. He saw me when I entered and decided to give me a surprise. He changed my simple meal to a five-star meal for free. The three people were shocked. They asked unhappily why they didn’t get that kind of service.

In Chinese cities such as Shanghai, Shenzhen, and Yiwu, some small markets have introduced a new service called “cooked-to-order”. It allows customers to prepare ingredients (材料) right there in the market, and the chefs (厨师) can cook the meal for them very soon.
For a small cost, customers can hand over the vegetables, fish, or meat they’ve just bought, and have them cooked at the markets, so they can bring home a hot meal. This service has become very popular.
At Yiwu’s Xinma Road Neighborhood Market, the Runyu Food Processing Workshop has been a key driver of this trend (趋势). Customers can request their food to be prepared in different ways, from stir-frying to stewing, based on their preferences. They can either eat there or take their freshly prepared meals to go. The cost depends on the complexity of each dish, or how hard the dish is to make. “Customers really like it,” said chef Zhou Kaikai, who works at Runyu.
Every day, the workshop handles about 40 orders, with around 100 dishes prepared in total. Open daily from 9 am to around 7 pm, Runyu lists clear prices for different dishes, such as 10 yuan for stir-fried vegetables, 15 yuan for meat dishes and 20 yuan for complex cooking items.
Jin Jingxiu, a staff member at Xinma Road Neighborhood Market, said the cooked-to-order service helps the market keep up with the fast-paced, modern lifestyle. “People like seeing the cooking process. They find the service more reliable (可信赖的) than restaurant or delivery options,” Jin said.
A customer said she was curious when she saw the cooking service offered in the market and decided to give it a try. “It’s really convenient, freeing me from washing and cooking.” she said.
27. What can we learn about the cooked-to-order service from Paragraph 2?

After finishing his last delivery (送货), truck driver Zhou Qiang took Flight CZ8233 back home for Spring Festival celebrations. He was excited because it was his first time flying on China’s own C919 airplane.
Once on the plane, he couldn’t stop taking pictures to share with his family later. “The seats are really comfortable. 1 I can even cross them,” Zhou said. The flight from Guangzhou to Chengdu cut his travel time from at least seven hours by train to just two and a half hours this year.
2 In the past, many workers rode motorcycles home in the cold, but now more people choose high-speed trains or planes. This is a big difference from about ten years ago when it was common to see workers riding motorcycles from cities like Guangzhou to their hometowns in Guangxi, Guizhou, Yunnan, or Sichuan.
Huang Xiaoyan and her husband were among those who used to ride motorcycles home. They spent 30 hours traveling from Foshan in Guangdong to their village in Guangxi. “It was freezing, especially when it rained. The roads were slippery (湿滑的) and dangerous,” Huang remembered. 3
In 2013, 1.1 million motorcycle trips were recorded during the Spring Festival travel season in Guangdong. But after 2014, the number started to drop as high-speed trains became more common, connecting Guangdong with places like Guizhou and Guangxi. This year, railways are expected to handle (应付) over 510 million passenger trips, an increase of 5.5% from last year. 4
Now fewer people are willing to ride motorcycles home. Over the past three years, Huang and her brother have driven home in his car. “Almost no one I know rides motorcycles home anymore,” Huang added.
A. And there’s lots of space for my legs.
B. And she said the journey was very difficult.
C. Road trips are also expected to reach 7.2 billion.
D. During the festival, there’s a big travel rush in China.
E. Zhou noticed how things have changed over the years.

In Chinese cities such as Shanghai Shenzhen, and Yiwu, some small markets have introduced a new service called “cooked-to-order”.
