Frank Lloyd Wright (1867-1959), widely regarded as America’s greatest architect, pioneered the philosophy of “organic architecture” that revolutionized modern design. His innovative approach emphasized creating structures that existed in harmony with their natural surroundings, a concept that grew from his childhood experiences in rural Wisconsin.
Born to a Welsh family, Wright spent his formative years immersed in the natural beauty of the Wisconsin landscape. These early experiences fundamentally shaped his architectural vision. After briefly studying civil engineering at the University of Wisconsin, he moved to Chicago in 1887 to apprentice (学徒) with the renowned architect Louis Sullivan. From Sullivan, Wright adopted the method “form follows function,” which became a cornerstone of his design philosophy.
Wright’s breakthrough came with his development of the Prairie School style, characterized by horizontal lines, open floor plans, and integration with the environment. His residential designs like the Robie House (1909) showcased these innovative concepts. Wright’s career was marked by both triumph and tragedy — his Imperial Hotel in Tokyo famously survived the 1923 Great Kanto Earthquake. while his personal residence Taliesin suffered two disastrous fires.
Remarkably productive in his later years, Wright designed nearly one-third of his 1,100 projects after turning 70. His final masterpiece, New York’s Guggenheim Museum, remains an iconic example of his spiral (螺旋) design concepts. Beyond buildings, Wright established the Taliesin Fellowship to train future architects and authored influential works like An Autobiography (1932).
Today, eight of Wright’s buildings are designated UNESCO World Heritage Sites, recognizing his enduring influence on sustainable architecture and urban planning concepts that were decades ahead of their time.
4. What most fundamentally influenced Wright’s architectural vision?
A. His design of the Robie House.
B. His apprenticeship with Louis Sullivan.
C. His early years spent in the countryside of Wisconsin.
D. His study of civil engineering at the University of Wisconsin.
5. Why is the Imperial Hotel mentioned in paragraph 3?
A. To demonstrate its fire resistance.
B. To explain Wright’s early career struggles.
C. To highlight the luxurious style of Wright’s architecture.
D. To show Wright’s ability to design earthquake-resistant buildings.
6. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?
A. Wright designed the Guggenheim Museum when he was 70.
B. Wright’s Prairie School style features spiral design concepts.
C. Wright established the Taliesin Fellowship to design buildings.
D. Eight of Wright’s structures have been listed among UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
7. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. The concept of “organic architecture”.
B. The development of the Prairie School style.
C. The life and achievements of Frank Lloyd Wright.
D. The influence of Frank Lloyd Wright on classical architecture.

For centuries, humans have wondered if animals can communicate across species. Recent research offers fascinating insights into this question.
Research published in Current Biology shows that migratory songbirds can interpret alarm calls from different bird species. These birds often travel alone over long distances making it crucial to detect potential threats. Scientists found that when a songbird hears another species’ alarm call, it responds appropriately — either by freezing or fleeing — even though the call is not part of its own natural repertoire (本领).
Dr. Benjamin Van Doren, who led the study, explained, “This suggests that birds can generalize the meaning of certain sounds, regardless of which species produces them.” This cross-species understanding likely helps migratory birds survive in unfamiliar environments where they encounter many different animals.
One of the most fascinating examples comes from fork-tailed drongos in Africa. These clever birds follow meerkats and other animals to steal their food. At first, drongos use their own alarm calls to scare meerkats away from their meals. However, when the meerkats learn to ignore these calls, the drongos change their approach.
Remarkably, drongos begin mimicking the alarm calls of other species — sometimes even perfectly copying the meerkats’ own warning signals. By rotating through different calls, they keep their victims uncertain and maintain their food-stealing strategy. Dr. Thomas Flower, who studied this behavior, noted, “Drongos don’t just mimic randomly; they choose calls that are most likely to work in each situation.”
These examples show advanced communication skills. However, scientists debate whether this demonstrates true intentional deception (欺骗) or simply learned behavior. Young drongos, for instance, start by mimicking sounds without understanding their purpose. Only through trial and error do they learn which calls are effective.
New technologies, such as AI-powered bioacoustic (生物声学) analysis, are helping scientists decode animal communication more precisely. Future studies may reveal whether some species can engage in true two-way communication with others — a discovery that would revolutionize our understanding of animal cognition.
8. What is the main focus of the research mentioned?
A. Documenting bird migration patterns. B. Studying cross-species communication.
C. Comparing human and animal languages. D. Exploring animals’ food-seeking strategies.
9. Why is cross-species communication important for migratory songbirds?
A. It helps them find mates during migration.
B. It enables them to imitate other birds’ alarm call.
C. It allows them to recognize dangers in new areas.
D. It helps them locate food more efficiently over long distance.
10 What remains uncertain about drongos’ behavior?
A. How far they travel daily. B. How many calls they can memorize.
C. Whether they recognize human speech. D. Whether they deliberately deceive other animals.
11. How might future technologies contribute to this field of research?
A. By reducing the need for field observations.
B. By preventing animals from mimicking each other.
C. By teaching animals human languages more precisely.
D. By aiding in the better understanding of animal communication.

Can people truly forget their native language? Linguists have identified a phenomenon called “native language attrition”, which refers to the gradual decline of one’s first language proficiency due to limited use.
This is particularly common among individuals who move to a country where another language is dominant. Research shows that the extent of attrition depends heavily on age.
Young children are particularly vulnerable to complete native language loss. A groundbreaking 2003 study published in Cerebral Cortex examined Korean children adopted by French families before age 8.Remarkably, by age 30, these individuals showed no better understanding of Korean than native French speakers who had never been exposed to the language.
In contrast, teenagers and adults are far less likely to forget their native language. According to Professor Laura Dominguez, a linguistics expert, this is because older individuals have a more solid foundation in their first language. After puberty (青春期), the brain becomes less adaptable, making it harder to lose established language skills.
Of all linguistic elements, vocabulary suffers the most from attrition. An English student returning from Spain might temporarily struggle to recall certain native expressions. Dominguez compares this to searching through “a filing cabinet of two vocabularies” — the words aren’t lost, just slower to retrieve. Grammar, particularly tense usage, shows more adaptability. A 2023 study confirmed Spanish speakers in England maintained proper present tense usage after 15 years, despite English influence.
The phenomenon also appears differently in special populations. Bilingual individuals with dementia (痴呆)often experience “language reversion,” unexpectedly returning to their native tongue despite decades of using another language. This suggests childhood language acquisition creates deep neurological connections that persist throughout life.
Interestingly, the attrition process can be reversed through re-immersion in the native language environment. The brain demonstrates remarkable plasticity in reactivating seemingly “forgotten” language knowledge, though recovery time varies by individual and circumstances.
12. According to the passage, what is “native language attrition”?
A. The complete loss of one’s first language.
B. A brain disorder affecting language processing.
C. The gradual weakening of native language skills.
D. A temporary difficulty in speaking any language.
13. Who is most likely to forget their native language completely?
A. A 10-year-old immigrant.
B. A college exchange student.
C. A bilingual business executive.
D. A 5-year-old international adoptee.
14. What does the underlined word “retrieve” in paragraph 5 mean?
A. Call up. B. Bring in.
C. Go away. D. Take off.
15. What does “language reversion” in bilingual dementia patients suggest?
A. Dementia improves language flexibility.
B. Attrition is unavoidable in elderly populations.
C. Patients intentionally reject their second language.
D. Childhood language learning creates lasting brain connections.

It had been a challenging but rewarding term, filled with hard work and a thirst for knowledge. As I handed in my final assignment and saw it was graded A, a sense of pride and satisfaction washed over me. Little did I know that my accomplishments had not gone unnoticed by my families, who had been closely observing my progress.
At the first day of summer vacation, my mother told me excitedly that we would pay a visit to Marco the next day to cheer for my progress in academic study. When I got the good news, I felt on top of the world and could not hold back my high spirits. As I lay in bed that night, a mix of anticipation and delight welled up in my heart, and I slid into a dream-filled sleep, eagerly awaiting the arrival of the coming adventure.
After we arrived in Marco, my parents said that we would first visit the Marco tower. Marco Tower, built in the late 19th century, is a historic landmark that showcases the rich architectural heritage of the city. It is also considered one of the top tourist attractions in the region. Upon hearing the inspiring news, I bounced up and down with joy. But then I felt a bit uneasy because of my fear of heights.
Inside the lift, my palms grew sweaty as the anxiety consumed me. I paced back and forth in the tower lift, unsure of whether I would have the courage. After the lift reached the specific floor, I gasped (倒吸一口气) in horror. The floor here was made of glass, so one could appreciate the height of the tower and take a real adventure. Seeing my family both take out their phones to shoot the grand views, I felt under pressure. Then my mother smiled at me and said delightedly, “Just take it easy and you can do it.”
