It was a cold winter evening in December, the kind where frost painted the windows and the fireplace was too weak to keep the room warm. I was twelve at the time, and my father, a quiet man who loved writing, had worked on his book for months. His study was messy, filled with coffee cups and paper—proof of his hard work. That evening, the mailman brought a thick envelope. My younger sister Lily, always eager to check the mail, grabbed it and 1 it to Dad with excitement.
Dad looked at the sender’s name—a famous publishing company—and sighed. Without saying anything, he dropped the envelope onto a shelf near his desk.
“Dad, won’t you open it?” Lily asked, sounding confused.
“It’s probably just another time to be 2 ,” he replied quietly, staring at his computer screen. His voice was 3 , but I saw his hands shake slightly.
The room fell into a heavy 4 , except for the sound of typing. Lily, however, didn’t give up. She pulled a chair to the shelf, climbed up, and grabbed the envelope. With her small hands, she opened it. “Look! It’s from the 5 !” she shouted, holding the letter high.
Dad 6 typing. Slowly, he took the letter and read, “We are happy to tell you that your book has been chosen for publication...” His voice broke as he held the paper tightly.
Lily laughed and jumped around. “I knew they’d like it!” Her eyes shone with pride, as if she’d uncovered a hidden treasure.
Dad’s face changed—first surprise, then hope, and finally relief. He hugged Lily tightly. “Thank you,” he whispered, “for not giving up on me.”
Years later, whenever Dad feels uncertain about sending his work, he remembers Lily’s words, 7 him to try. Now, I’ve started writing too—short stories in notebooks, poems on paper. When I doubt myself, Dad places a hand on my shoulder and says, “Just send it. What matters is having the 8 to try.”
Last month, I received my first refusal letter. For a moment, my heart sank. But Lily ran into my room, grabbed the letter, and said, “Next time, they’ll say 9 ! Want to bet a cookie? “Her smile made me laugh.
This journey taught me that success isn’t just about skill—it’s about having someone who 10 supports you, even when things seem hard. And sometimes, that someone is a little sister who never stops believing.

One day, a young king went out to hunt deer, when he carelessly became separated from others. Wondering around, the king saw a farmhouse that was surrounded by a garden, and inside the garden was a young woman.
The king spoke to her: “Tell me, what plants are you growing here?” “I am raising pumpkins,” she replied, “as you can see.” She had a quick glance at the pile of pumpkins behind her and gave a quick smile to the king. He couldn’t help but smile back.
As the king returned to the city, a thought began to grow in his mind. “Perhaps, I might think up a test to see just how smart this young woman might be.” he thought.
The king then ordered a soldier to carry a new jar without handles to the young woman’s house. The soldier told the young woman that the jar was from the king and she should put a whole enough big pumpkin inside the jar with a small opening at the top. And the soldier also said that the king wanted the jar and the pumpkin must remain whole.
The young woman returned a message to the king that such a task might take a long time. In fact, it was several months before the young woman arrived at the palace. In her hands she held the same jar, and sure enough, a whole pumpkin sat inside it. The king was amazed that he had no idea how she could have brought this about!
Here was her answer to the king: She had placed a pumpkin bud (花蕾), which was still connected to a vine (藤蔓) in the ground, inside the jar through its small opening. As time flies, the pumpkin bud grew into a full-sized pumpkin.

Marlowe was the richest man in the village. One evening, three men knocked at his door. They were tired and wanted a bed for the night. “You can sleep in the stable (马厩),” said Marlowe, “and my servant will bring you some soup.” The strangers said thank you and went to the stable. In the middle of the night, one of the men got up quietly. He took a rope and tied it round a cow’s neck. He led the cow into a forest and tied it to a tree. “I’ll get the cow in the morning and sell her in the market,” he thought.
Next morning, the servant went to milk the cows. When he saw that one cow was missing he went to tell Marlowe. Marlowe went to the stable. “Did you steal one of my cows?” he asked. “Of course not, the three men answered.” “We were asleep all night.” Marlowe told his wife about the cow. “I’m sure that one of the three men stole the cow,” She said, “I have a plan.”
They went to the stable and she said. “We have a very clever dog called Barney. He will show us who stole the cow. Go into the room where Barney is, and stroke him. When the thief strokes Barney’s fur, the dog will bark.”

The dog still didn’t make a sound. “Did you all stroke the dog’s fur?” asked the woman. “Yes,” they said. Then Marlowe’s wife asked to smell the hand that each man used to stroke the dog. She smelled them in turn. When she got to the third man, she said, “You are the thief. Our dog Barney is very smelly. Your friends smell of Barney. Your hand doesn’t. As I looked out of the school bus window, I saw the Galaxy Drive-In (银河汽车影院). One sign said “CLOSED,” and the girl next to me whispered, “It’s haunted (闹鬼的). Sometimes movies play there by themselves!” Later, I told my mom about it, but she doubted it. That night, however, I saw lights shining on the screen. Was it really haunted?
The next morning, Mom and I went to check it. The place looked like an empty car park. While we were looking at an old movie poster, an old man appeared. “This is a private place,” he said. Mom apologized, explaining we had just moved nearby and that she used to visit it as a kid. The man’s expression softened. I blurted out, “They say ghosts play movies here!” Mom gave me a look, but the man smiled. “I’m the one playing those movies,” he said, introducing himself as Nick. “My dad opened this place in 1957.”
Nick explained that he couldn’t afford a digital projector (数字投影机), so he had to close it. Before leaving, he invited us to watch a movie that night. We returned, and as I sat with Mom in our car, I imagined how lively the drive-in must have been years ago. After the movie, Mom asked Nick if he’d reopen with a new projector. “Sure,” he said. That night, I kept thinking about the excitement of seeing that big screen light up. Nick had looked so happy talking about the old days.
That’s when my big idea came to me.
The next day, Mom and I talked to Nick. With his OK, I wrote a letter to our newspaper.
Help save the Galaxy! To reopen, the Galaxy Drive-In needs your help to upgrade its projection system. With your help, this historical theatre can once again become a good place for families in our town.
I ended by asking people for contributions. If even half the families in the town donated a dollar each, Nick would have enough.
We were hopeful, but after two weeks, only a few hundred dollars was raised.
I felt glum, but soon things brightened.
Nick called our house. “An organization that protects old theatres saw your letter and started an online fundraiser,” Nick said excitedly. “See what you started, Jared? I can’t thank you enough.”
That was a year ago. Today, the Galaxy is back in business. I’ve never seen Nick happier. On a good night, he gets 300 cars.
1.Why does the writer include the detail about Nick’s father opening the drive-in in 1957?
A.To show the drive-in’s historical value. B.To explain why it needed a digital projector.
C.To show Nick’s deep love for his father. D.To explain why no one came to watch movies.
2.What does “my big idea” in Paragraph 5 refer to?
A.Buying a new projector. B.Organizing a movie night.
C.Talking to Nick with Mom. D.Writing to ask for donations.

A.Saving the Galaxy B.Opening a Drive-In

After escaping Long John Silver, I felt a mix of relief and fear. Though I had gotten away, I knew he was still hiding somewhere on the island. While searching for a safer spot, I heard voices nearby—Silver and a sailor named Tom.
“I want you with me! ” Silver shouted. “When we have the treasure, there’s gold for you too!” “Never!” cried Tom. “I’m not a murderer. You’re guilty, all of you! ” Sadly, these were the last words of Tom. It was a gunshot, Silver’s gun.
My heart raced as I ran deeper into the forest, not caring which direction I took. Suddenly, a figure moved between the trees. Was it a wild animal? A pirate? Even Silver himself appeared less terrible to me now.
The shadow crept closer. “Who are you?” I whispered, stepping back. “Ben Gunn,” the man replied softly. His clothes were tom, and his eyes looked haunted. “I’ve been alone here for three years. Who are you? “Jim Hawkins,” I answered.
Ben pointed shakily toward the distant ship offshore. “Is that Captain Flint’s ship?” he asked, his voice trembling.
“No. Flint is dead,” I explained. “But there are some of his old hands abroad.” like Silver.”
“Not a man. . . with one. . . leg?” Ben asked in a tremulous voice, with his pale face and scared eyes.
“You mean Silver? He once worked as a cook on the ship.” I added. “Now, he is also on the island to find Flint’s treasure. He wants to kill anyone in their way and take over the ship!”
Ben nodded slowly. “I was on Flint’s ship when he buried the treasure. Six sailors helped him dig, but only Flint returned alive. No one knows how he made it, not a man except him could make out. It was a battle, a murder and a sudden death—him against six.” His words sent a chill down my spine.
Before I could ask more, loud explosions shook the island. Smoke rose near the shore—the pirates were fighting! Ben grabbed my arm. “We must hide! Silver won’t stop until he gets what he wants.”
Together, we hurried into the forest, unsure if we’d ever escape the island—or Silver’s greed.

押题猜想五 阅读理解之说明文
When searching “AI homework” online, you’ll see countless posts (帖子), mostly by students and teachers, discussing whether AI is helpful or harmful for students. So, is AI a helpful homework tool or just an excuse for students to be lazy?
Zhang Yue, a grade 10 student from Beijing, told China Youth Daily that over half of his classmates use AI to help with their homework, especially for reviewing books or planning class projects. With AI, students can work more quickly and perfectly.
But for Zhang Min, a grade 11 student in Jiaozuo, Henan, who is weak in writing compositions, AI has had a bad effect on her learning. In an interview with Hunan Daily, she said that after using it for a short time, she found that her ability to think independently (独立地) had deteriorated, and her Chinese language grades had dropped as well.
What’s more, the quality of Chinese and English compositions produced by AI can be quite poor, according to Peng Xiang, a high school teacher from Xuzhou, Jiangsu. AI-produced work may include incorrect information or simply be short of a deep theme or “soul”.
_________ Jiang Xinwei,18, from Jilin, said that she has used AI to help her with creative writing pieces for English class. “I already have in mind what I want to write, like the plot,” Jiang said. “I just use AI to help smoother transitions (过渡) and learn how to tell the story more naturally.” Jiang believes that AI serves as a resource library, but the main ideas and phrasing (措辞) are still her own.
When used effectively, AI can be helpful for teaching and learning. “Accepting new in technology is preparing ourselves for the future,” Peng said. “But schools and teachers must guide students to correctly use AI as a learning tool.”
1.What do we know about “AI homework” from the passage?
A.A helpful tool. B.A fun post.
C.A class project. D.A hot topic.
2.What does the underlined word “deteriorated” most likely mean in Paragraph 3?
A.improved greatly B.stayed the same
C.become lower D.disappeared soon
3.Which of the following is the most suitable for _________?
A.However, some students take advantage of AI in a smarter way.
B.There’s no worry about depending too much on the technology.
C.Most students avoid using AI for their homework except English.
D.The use of AI for doing homework brings different experiences.
4.Which of the following correctly shows their attitude (态度) to AI technology?

2.词句猜测题。根据文章第三段“she found that her ability to think independently had deteriorated, and her Chinese language grades had dropped as well.”可知,张敏在使用AI一段时间后,发现自己的独立思考能力下降了,语文成绩也下降了,可以推断“deteriorated”意为“变差、下降”。故选C。
3.推理判断题。根据文章第五段“Jiang Xinwei,18, from Jilin, said that she has used AI to help her with creative writing pieces for English class.”以及“Jiang believes that AI serves as a resource library, but the main ideas and phrasing are still her own.” 故选A。
4.细节理解题。根据文章第四段“What’s more, the quality of Chinese and English compositions produced by AI can be quite poor, according to Peng Xiang, a high school teacher from Xuzhou, Jiangsu.”以及最后一段“When used effectively, AI can be helpful for teaching and learning. ‘Accepting new in technology is preparing ourselves for the future,’ Peng said.”

Chopsticks have been used in Asia for over 3,000 years. The earliest chopsticks were discovered in Henan China about 1200 BCE. Over the next 2,000 years, they spread throughout East and Southeast Asia.
The three most well-known types are Chinese, Japanese, and Korean. Chinese chopsticks are longer with wide, rounded points at the end, mostly made of plastic or bamboo. While Japanese chopsticks are shorter and more pointed. Korean ones are flat rather than round and made of metal rather than wood. It’s said that ancient Royalty (皇室) used silver chopsticks to see if their food was poisoned (有毒的). In Southeast Asia, Vietnamese chopsticks are similar to Chinese ones.
Chopsticks are not just eating tools. A proper chopstick grip (握法) can greatly improve dining experience. First, place the top part of two sticks between your thumb and index finger. Hold the upper chopstick gently with your first three fingers while resting the lower one at your ring finger. Meanwhile, put your thumb at the side of your index-finger nail. The upper stick is moved up and down with the movements of the index finger and middle finger. This way, pieces of food can be easily grasped between the tips of the chopsticks.
________ The first rule is to grab and not stab (刺入) food with the tip of your chopsticks. Second, don’t set chopsticks vertically (垂直的) into the rice in your bowl. In some cultures, such positioning of chopsticks is considered as a symbol associated with death. Third, watch where you point your chopsticks. It’s rude to point them directly at others.
Following the guidelines above, you not only show respect for the cultural traditions about chopsticks, but also enrich your overall dining experience.

Manus is a software developed by a 90s-born research team in China. Its founder, Xiao Hong, graduated from Huazhong University of Science and Technology. Its release (发布) quickly drew global attention.
Manus can do all sorts of tasks in different areas. Unlike normal AI assistants that just give answers, Manus is like a hard-working little robot. It gets things done! This is a big step towards Artificial General Intelligence (AGI), which means an AI that can work on many tasks without humans always telling it what to do.
The idea behind Manus is super cool. It’s not just about answering questions. It jumps into problem-solving, makes workflows easier, and can deal with complex (复杂的) projects with little supervision (监督). It changes how we use AI, from just getting help passively to having an AI that takes the lead.
Manus can deal with text, images, and code as well. It uses smart reasoning models to understand hard instructions and can fit into different industries. Also, it can easily use common tools like web browsers and Excel, so your work can be done without your help. It can remember past interactions and make better decisions as time goes by.
Some of its key features are: it can do tasks on its own, like writing reports and planning trips; it can deal with different types of data; and it can work well with other apps. Manus did really well in the test, which shows it’s really good at solving real-world problems. Right now, it offers services to only a few users, so, ordinary people like you and me, just wait patiently!
At the moment, Manus’ invitation code became super popular and was even sold for tens of thousands of yuan! People from other countries also tried hard to buy it. Before this, apps like ChatGPT or Google Gemini from other countries were the ones everyone talked about. But now, Manus shows that China isn’t copying others in technology— we’re leading the way and setting the rules for the future!

①Recent studies suggest plants might “communicate” in ways humans are only beginning to understand. Researchers at the University of Nanjing have discovered that when plants are under stress—such as insect attacks or not having enough water—they let out airborne chemicals called volatile organic compounds (VOCs). These VOCs are like messages to neighboring plants and make them start their protection ways.
②For example, when a tomato plant is bitten by caterpillars, it gives out some special VOCs. Nearby plants detect these chemicals and begin producing bad-tasting things in their leaves, so insects don’t like them as much. This phenomenon, which we call “plant eavesdropping”, challenges the traditional view of plants as passive living things.
③To test this further, scientists designed an experiment. They placed healthy bean plants in airtight chambers (密闭舱) next to chambers with plants that have little pests (害虫). Within 24 hours, the healthy plants began turn on their protection genes, even though they had no direct contact with the pests.
④How do plants “hear” these messages? The answer lies in their leaves. Tiny holes called stomata not only control the air coming in but also take in VOCs from the air. Once they take them in, the chemicals make the plant’s cells to something to get ready for possible dangers.
⑤This discovery has practical points. Farmers could potentially use synthetic VOCs to “warn” crops of coming pest attacks, reducing pesticide use. As Dr. Li Wei, the lead researchers, stated, “Plants have been talking all along—we just needed to learn their language.”
1.Which paragraph explains HOW plants detect chemical messages?
A.① B.② C.③ D.④
2.Where does the following sentence best fit?
“Surprisingly, the healthy plants showed no physical harm but still started protective steps.”
A.After① B.After② C.After③ D.After④
3.Which conclusion is supported by the experiment in paragraph ③?
A.Plants only react to direct physical contact.
B.Airborne chemicals alone can start plant protection ways.
C.Stomata are useless in pest resistance (抵抗).
D.Synthetic VOCs harm crop growth.
4.What type of writing is this text?
A.A fictional story B.A historical report
C.An opinion essay D.A scientific explanation

For many years, the rice grew well. Then one year the rice did not grow, and there was a famine.
“Give us rice!” the people begged.
“No!” cried the raja. “The famine may last a long time. I must have the rice for myself. A raja must not go hungry!”
One day, an elephant was carrying two big baskets of rice to the raja.
A village girl named Rani noticed something. A little rice was falling from one of the baskets. She walked behind the elephant and caught the falling rice in her skirt.
Rani took all the rice to the raja.
“This rice fell from one of the elephant’s baskets, and I’m returning it to you,” she said.
“I wish to give you a reward for returning my rice,” the raja said. “Ask me for anything.”
“Oh, Raja,” said Rani. “I do not need any reward. But if you wish, you may give me one grain of rice.”
“One grain of rice?” cried the raja. “That’s not enough!”
“Very well,” said Rani. “Today, you can give me a single grain of rice. Then tomorrow you can double it and give me two grains of rice. The next day, four grains of rice and so on for thirty days.”
“That’s not much of a reward,” said the raja. “But you shall have it.”
And the raja gave Rani a single grain of rice. The next day, Rani got two grains of rice.
On the 9th day, Rani got 256 grains of rice.
“This girl is not very clever,” thought the raja. “There was more rice in her skirt. Why didn’t she keep it?”
On the 16th day, Rani received 32,768 grains of rice. On the 27th day, the raja delivered 64 baskets of rice to Rani.
“One grain of rice is turning into a lot,” the raja thought. “But I shall give her the reward, as a raja should.”
On the final day, 256 elephants carried the last of the rice to Rani—536870,912 grains.
“What will you do with this rice?” asked the raja. “I have no more.”
“I will give it to all the hungry people,” said Rani. “And I will leave you a basket. From now on, you’ll only take as much rice as you need. Promise?”

Imagine watching a movie in a foreign language or attending a lecture where the speaker talks fast, the subtitles (字幕) appear directly on your glasses. Isn’t that amazing?
Recently, an ordinary yet "magical" pair of glasses—the AR Smart Glasses—has hit the market, which goes far beyond regular translation tools by offering hands-free, screen-free, real-time interactive translation.
The AR Smart Glasses are lightweight and comfortable to wear. They look just like regular glasses, but the “magic” hidden within them can’t be ignored (忽视).
The coolest feature of the AR Smart Glasses is their special translator. When people talk with someone, they can just point the glasses’ camera at the person they’re talking to, and the translation appears on the screen. When people visit a new city wearing AR Smart Glasses, they can simply look at any text, and a translation quickly appears in their view. If they get lost and need directions, the glasses can connect with GPS apps and show them translated directions right in front of their eyes. Even for language learners, it would be wonderful to practice a new language by seeing the words they hear being translated simultaneously (同步地). Learning a language can become quicker, easier, and more certain.
Since translation tools like the AR Smart Glasses help people understand words easily, some people start to question whether it’s still necessary to learn English, or any other foreign languages. In fact, knowing a new language is more than just that. When you speak a language fluently, you understand the way people talk, the jokes they make, and the special meanings behind their words. This helps you connect with people better and make real friends. Also, being able to speak more than one language makes you smarter. It helps you think in new ways and solve problems more easily. In a word, learning a language isn’t just about understanding words. More importantly, it’s about real connections with native speakers and a different point of view to see the world.
So, even though AR Smart Glasses and other cool tools can help with translations, the real joy and benefits of knowing a language come from speaking it fluently and understanding its culture.

3.What is the best title for the story?

1.What is the main purpose of Manus according to the text?
A.To provide entertainment. B.To answer questions passively.
C.To replace human workers. D.To completes tasks actively.
2.What is the main significant progress of Manus mentioned in the text?
A.Its ability to answer questions quickly.
B.Its capacity to process large amounts of data.
C.Its ability to take the lead in problem-solving.
D.Its ability to communicate in multiple languages.
3.Why is Manus considered a game-changer in the AI industry?
A.It is the first AI developed in China. B.It can handle only one type of data.
C.It can work with minimal supervision. D.It is cheaper than other AI tools.
4.How does the text describe the influence of Manus on the global AI market?
A.It proves that China is leading in AI technology.
B.It shows that China is following other countries.
C.It indicates that China is still behind in AI development.
D.It suggests that China is only focused on local markets.

Long ago, a raja lived in India. His people were rice farmers. The raja said to them, “Give me most of your rice, and I will store it. When the time of famine comes, everyone will have rice to eat.” So each year, the raja took most of the people’s rice and stored it.

They are now building a rocket called Space Launch System. A company called Boeing, which builds airplanes and spaceships, is helping. Tiera Fletcher is an engineer working at Boeing. She is working on Space Launch System. It will be the largest rocket ever built.
Question one: What was your life like growing up?
Fletcher: I grew up in a small town called Mableton. It is right outside Atanta, Gicorgia. I was very interested in Maths as a kid. My mom would take me on trips to the store. She would make me calculate the price of the things we bought. Later, my interests grew. I wanted to be a mathematician. I also wanted to be an inventor and scientist.
Question two: What is aerospace engineering, and how did you become interested in it?
Fletcher: Engineers solve problems. They do so by making products, such as machines. Aerospace engineers work with airplanes and spaceships. I took part in a school programme at age 11. It was about aerospace engineering. I decided that I wanted to become an aerospace engineer. In high school, I studied reverse thrust. Thrust is a pushing force (力). It moves airplanes forward. Engines (引擎) create thrust to push a lot of air backward. This causes the plane to move forward. Reverse thrust is a system. It is used in planes. It changes the direction that the air is pushed from the engine.
Question three: How did you come to work at Boeing, and what do you do there now?
Fletcher: I worked as an intern (实习生) at Boeing. Later, the company offered me a job. Today, I work on Space Launch System. I design some of its parts. The rocket is being built and tested now. It will be the largest rocket ever created. Its goal is to send people to Mars.
Question four: What challenges do you face at work and what have you done with them?
Fletcher: I’m 25, African American and female. Most of the people I work with are older males. This has been a challenge. People may have unfair or negative (消极的) beliefs about me. I have been able to rise above this challenge. I work hard to prove that I can do my job well. It takes confidence and courage.
Question five: What advice do you have for students who might be interested in a career like yours?
Fletcher: Do your research! Also, keep an open mind. There are so many choices out there in science, technology, engineering and maths. Try them all out. Keep trying new subjects until you find what you love. Do not limit yourself! You are capable (能干的) of more, you can do more, and you can be more.

How do your classmates stay calm during exams? Why can they fix group work problems quickly or solve fights with friends? The secret isn’t being “born smart”—they ask themselves simple questions like, “What should I do next?” or “Is there a better way?” This skill is called “metacognition”.
Understanding metacognition
Metacognition means “thinking about how you think”. Imagine it as a map for your brain—it helps you see your learning path clearly. Scientist John Flavell said, “It’s like knowing what you know and what you don’t know.” People who use metacognition well break a big task into small ones (plan), find mistakes quickly (check), try new ways if something doesn’t work (fix) and use what worked before in new situations (learn). In this way, people can work out problems faster with less trouble and effort.
Real-life examples of metacognition
Preparing for exams. Tom breaks his study into two parts—30 minutes for notes and 10 minutes for his problems. Later, he asks, “Can I explain this to my classmates?” If not, he marks difficult parts or watches short videos to help himself learn faster.
Working in a group. Lisa divides tasks into “research” and “writing” and then sets weekly Friday meetings. When a member is absent, she calmly gives the tasks to others and uses the group chat to share their work. In this way, the project can be finished on time.
Managing moods. When a friend suddenly changes the outing plan, Mike stops for a moment, takes a deep breath and asks himself, “Am I angry because of this?” He then sends WeChat messages to his friend, “Can we meet another day?” This calm way of dealing with his awful feelings is a better choice.
Practising metacognition
When you’re working, ask yourself questions like, “What should I do now?”, “Is this helpful?” or “Is there a better way?” Write down good ideas in a notebook, or try to explain them out. If you can’t explain them clearly, go back and review the parts you don’t understand. When you’re trapped, think: “How will someone else solve this?” Maybe they will research first, break the task into small ones or ask for others’ help. Try to do what they do!
Why it matters
Metacognition turns “not understanding” into “clear understanding”. Whether solving math problems or facing daily challenges, paying attention to how you think helps you make better decisions. Remember: The best learners don’t just work hard, but also use metacognition to work smarter.
About Metacognition
●It works as a mind map to deal with the problems instead of a 1 skill.

In North-west China lies the Taklamakan Desert—a huge golden sand sea covering 337,000 square kilometers. For centuries, the desert spread s 1 , eating up fields and houses. Its strong winds covered villages with sand and f 2 farmers to leave their homelands. Now, local farmers and workers are planting a “green wall”—thousands of kilometers of trees, bushes and grass, to s 3 the desert growing. These plants act like glue, keeping the sand in place. This sand-fixing planting is turning the desert into a green wall. Rows of the green wall have now prevented 70% of moving sand in some areas. Farmers e 4 grow wheat and fruit behind the green wall, bravely fighting the desert’s terrible living conditions.
Workers use smart m 5 to fight the desert. For example, drones (无人机) fly over remote places, dropping seeds (种子) and carrying water to help plants grow. Moreover, electronic tools under the ground check how w 6 the soil is all the time, like doctors keeping records of patients’ health. When it’s time to water, they send messages to farmers’ phones. At the same time, underground pipes transport water carefully to a 7 waste. These technologies provide a high level of service for all the farmers.
The green wall also b 8 life back. Birds return to their homes among the plants. Small animals like rabbits and insects find cover in the growing green spaces. China plans to build this wall across the whole of the Taklamakan. If it is s 9 , other desert countries may learn from it. Each seed planted becomes a brave fighter in the quiet war against the sand. Where nothing grew before, h 10 grows like a seed—a living wall whispers, “This land will survive.”

阅读理解
While having Chinese classes, we are often amazed at how beautiful the ancient Chinese poems and articles are. However, these ancient texts can be quite obscure sometimes. It’s challenging for many of us to understand them.
Here is good news for us. Recently, a college research team from Nanjing, Jiangsu Province has created “Xunzi” to help with the understanding of Chinese ancient books and research on them.
Xunzi is a large language model (LLM) which includes a great number of Chinese ancient books and documents, like the collections of the “Complete Library in Four Sections” or “Siku Quanshu”. It uses deep learning techniques (技术) and big data (数据) sets, and collects more than two billion Chinese characters and words.
This LLM was named after Xunzi because he was not only a famous philosopher (哲学家) during the Warring States Period, but also a pioneer in presenting and explaining theories of linguistics (语言学理论) in ancient China.
With the model, researchers can quickly summarize (总结) the ancient texts and know about the themes of the ancient books. It can also find key information from the ancient texts, such as characters, events and places. Besides, the model can help researchers translate the ancient texts into modern Chinese, so they can fully understand them without the help of other dictionaries or books.
“The research on traditional Chinese classics is hard work even for professors, let alone for common learners. We just hope Xunzi can help save some time and energy for people,” said Wang Dongbo, who led the research team.
The LLM has been published on websites like github.com and modelscope.cn, allowing users to download and use it for free.
“Although we spent great effort and money on it, we still share it for free to encourage more people to study and pay attention to traditional Chinese culture,” Wang added.

4.What is the purpose of the passage?
A.To introduce a useful language model.

In spring this year, senior students at Nanjing University visited an exhibition (展览) of paintings in front of the school dining hall. There was something special about the exhibition: all the works came from a student dorm (宿舍) cleaner. Their themes are from simple plants to more complex (复杂的) objects.
48-year-old Wu Lidi became widely known by students of this university for her paintings. They called her “a cleaning lady who could have become an artist”. During the exhibition, many students left handwritten messages to express their thanks and send best wishes to Wu, which surprised and touched Wu a lot.
Wu has never received any professional training in painting. With a great interest in painting, she used to create blackboard newspaper for her class as a student. Later she worked as a cleaner at Nanjing University and started painting again by accident. One day, a student who was supposed to create a blackboard newspaper didn’t return to school in time. The blackboard only had a few words reading “Welcome Home.” Seeing that, we volunteers to enrich the blackboard newspaper by creating some pictures on it.
Since than, Wu has put more energy into painting on blackboards, and learned and practiced painting skills online in her spare time. As she’s responsible for cleaning a whole building, she is always busy. But she still takes the time to paint and that has never influenced her work. “I love doing it, and I hope students will feel happy to see my paintings,” she said.

3.What does Paragraph 3 mainly talk about?
A.Why Wu was interested in painting. B.Who taught Wu blackboard painting.
C.How Wu began painting as a cleaner. D.What voluntary work Wu used to do.
4.The underlined word “enrich” can be replaced by “______”.
A.change B.publish C.spread D.improve
5.What is the best title for the passage?
A.Life of a university cleaner B.A cleaning lady painting well
C.A special university exhibition D.The welcome ceremony of a university
Ever since I was 5 years old, my mother has been a volunteer at the Nanjing Museum. This meant that every weekend, I spent my time among ancient exhibits (展品). I had fun in the world of museums. I also had listened to stories and took part in activities. And it was in my junior high school years that I decided to become a museum volunteer myself.
The journey began with fun training lessons. I learned about the collection, exhibition planning and visitor guidance. Among the different skills needed for a museum volunteer, especially a guide, strong communication abilities are seen as important. We were taught how to talk with visitors. And we were also told how to answer their questions and explain things in a way that makes sense to them, depending on their ages and interests.
One of my most memorable experiences was explaining the arched door of the glazed arch of Grand Bao’en Temple. It played a big part in the Ming Dynasty’s temple architecture (建筑). I shared its ancient history and amazing craftsmanship with visitors. They were all very interested in it. I felt so proud that I had a deeper understanding of our cultural heritage (遗产). My passion and pride for traditional Chinese culture will always be with me in my life.
