Some of the World Heritage Sites have been attracting tourists for hundreds of years and are as fascinating now as they were when they were first uncovered.
Cappadocia, Turkey
Designated a World Heritage Site in 1985, Cappadocia is a place of flowing rock formations and stone-capped chimneys (j4). Consider taking one of the many hiking trails to get up close. Nearby, in the village of Uchisar are the ancient cave homes built by the people of the Bronze Age.
Borobudur, Indonesia
Borobudur is one of Indonesia’s most famous landmarks, included in the list of World Heritage Sites in 1991. Located on the island of Java, this massive temple complex was constructed in the 700s, but two to three hundred years later, it was abandoned, possibly due to volcanic eruptions in the area, and went relatively undisturbed for centuries. The site was uncovered in the 1800s and later restored.
Mesa Verde U. S. A.
Mesa Verde is home to some of the most well-preserved Indian ruins in North America. It has been on the list of World Heritage Sites since 1978. The most impressive sites are the cliff dwellings (住所), where the Ancestral Puebloans lived between the 12th century and the late 13th century. Sophie Hartley is a student in MIT’s Graduate Program in Science Writing. Her grandfather introduced her to photography when she was young, which helped her develop a sense of curiosity about the natural world. Each summer, they would explore rocky pools and thick forests with a camera. “Photography was a door into my career of science journalism (新闻业),” Hartley said. “It let me record the original beauty of a moment, return to think about the science behind it, and share some messages through writing.”
Hartley noticed a divide between country areas and city spaces. She wants to tell stories about communities that are less likely to be covered, and spread them to people in cities who might not otherwise understand what’s happening and why. Hartley once wrote a story about how flooding in Vermont led to grass shortages, which affected a wide range of foods, including goat cheese and beef. “When the grass can’t dry, it’s damaged,” she said. “That means cows and goats aren’t eating, which means they can’t produce our beef, milk, and cheese. As a result, citizens are also affected by countryside problems.”
Earlier this year, Hartley wrote an article about technology designed to avoid car accidents with kangaroos (袋鼠). As Hartley reported, given the unpredictable (难以预料的) behavior of kangaroos, vehicle animal sensing systems have proven ineffective. That has forced Australian communities to develop other solutions, such as virtual fencing (虚拟围栏), to keep kangaroos away from the roads. Her interest in animal well-being shines through in much of her work.
Hartley’s favorite piece focused on a type of leaf disease. She worked with a team of four researchers to discover how the disease works. “When there is so much research to do, it’s helpful to have someone to share the work,” Hartley said. “We were able to depend on each other’s strengths to produce stronger and better results.”
Local news organizations are disappearing as they depend more on larger news sources. What can be lost, however, are opportunities to tell local stories with possibly widespread influences. Hartley said, “I think it’s important that communities should be aware of what is happening around them, especially if it impacts them.”
24. How does Hartley view photography?
A. It improved her photography skills. B. It is a way to record family memories.
C. It inspired her interest in science writing. D. It allows her to learn advanced technology.
25. What is Hartley’s purpose in telling the story of Vermont’s flooding?
A. To explain the causes of grass shortages.
B To raise city awareness of country issues.
C. To encourage citizens to aid flooded areas.
D. To discuss farming practices in country areas.
26. What does the report on virtual fencing show about Hartley?
A. Her concern about wildlife protection. B. Her doubt about community safety.
C. Her wish for technology education. D. Her success in animal behavior research.
27. What does Hartley mainly want to express in paragraph 4?
A. Scientific discovery brings great joy. B. Effective scientific writing is challenging.
C. Individual effort is key to research success. D. Teamwork improves research productivity.

It is difficult for a teacher to decide whether to allow students to listen to music in the classroom. Every time students need to write an essay or work on a problem, they say, “Can I put my headphones on? I think better that way.” But is that really true? Does music help concentrate?
Research offers little to back up the idea that listening to music improves concentration. In one small study, 133 students performed reading tasks while listening to either light music, hip hop, or no music at all. Students who performed the reading tasks in silence scored the highest. Music with a higher intensity (强度) like hip hop was more distracting and had a bad effect on task performance.
Volume (音量) plays a more important role than the type of music. The study found that the louder the music, the worse the performance in concentration. The type of music didn’t matter. Data from the study showed once again that silence was the best environment to improve concentration.
However, music has a positive effect on work performance. Studies have showed that listening to music leads to positive changes in mood, as well as creativity. In fact, in music-listening cultures, which students are certainly part of, there’s actually a change in mood when the music is taken away.
It’s hard to convince my students that music doesn’t help with their concentration. Taj, a senior told me, “I wouldn’t be able to concentrate if I were listening to music and trying to read. However, when I write, I feel like music helps me concentrate deeply. I don’t have writer’s block. It’s easy for me to put my words on paper.”
“Maybe not with reading, but when it comes to math, listening to music certainly helps,” Danela told me. “You could actually be singing along with what you’re listening to and doing well in math.”
28. What does the underlined word “distracting” in paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. Causing great excitement. B. Making someone feel frightened.
C. Making someone want to do something. D. Making it difficult for someone to concentrate.
29. What can we learn from the small study?
A. The volume of music affects concentration.
B. Music can’t improve people’s mood and creativity.
C. Different types of music lead to different performances.
D. Students do well in reading tasks while listening to music.
30. What do Taj and Danela have in common?
A. They believe music doesn’t help concentrate. B. They use music to help with their paper-writing.
C. They can’t focus on reading while listening to music. D. They don’t listen to music while doing math problems.
31. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A. Can Music Change Mood? B. Is Music Related to Reading?
C. Should Students Listen to Music? D. Does Music Help Concentration?
D
The Qixi Festival, the Chinese equivalent (等同物) of Valentine’s Day that fell yesterday, was not only a disappointment for forgotten lovers, but also for businessmen left with empty pockets.
The cold attitude has made cultural experts seriously worry that the lovers’ festival, marked for generations since the Han Dynasty (206 BC-AD 220), is dying out. Some have even called for legislation (立法) to make the festival a legal Chinese Lovers’ Day, which falls on the seventh day of the seventh month of the lunar year. But the effectiveness of such a measure is in doubt, although efforts to preserve traditional festivals deserve high praise.
A growing number of traditional Chinese festivals, such as the Dragon Boat Festival and Mid-Autumn Festival, share the same fate as the Qixi Festival. Young people are showing less interest in traditional culture as symbolized by these festivals. Even if all traditional festivals are finally made legal, the risk of them becoming purely formalized celebrations with little meaning is not removed. If the younger generation fails to appreciate the cultural significance of these holidays, there is little that can be done.
While complaining about traditional festivals fading in appeal, decision-makers should reflect on cultural protection. Undeniably, our country has done a bad job of preserving culture and traditional festivals, compared to neighboring Japan and Korea. Only a few years ago did China begin to realize the significance of preserving intangible (非物质) cultural heritage when Korea planned to apply to UNESCO (联合国教科文组织) to list its version of the Dragon Boat Festival as an important example of intangible culture.
Concern about the traditional holidays also reminds people of the growing influence of foreign cultures as the country opens wider to the outside world. With traditional festivals becoming less important and imports such as Christmas and Valentine’s Day gaining widespread popularity the public, including cultural professionals, has tended to measure traditional Chinese festivals in economic terms. How much money can be made during the holidays is taken into consideration.
In fact, what makes traditional festivals unique and what keeps them alive is their cultural elements. After all, it is a unique culture that contributes to the world’s diversity with globalization.
32. What makes Chinese cultural experts worry that the lovers’ festival is dying out?
A. The disappointment for both businessmen and lovers.
B. The ignorance of the public to the Qixi Festival.
C. The failure to make traditional Chinese festivals legal.
D. The action to preserve culture and traditional festivals.
33. The public looks at the effectiveness of the legalization of the Qixi Festival with a(n)______attitude.

B. legal celebrations reduce the risk of the disappearance of traditional culture

35. The writer’s purpose for writing this article is to ______.
A. remind us that the cultural factors make traditional festivals live on
B. complain that Japan and Korea do a better job of preserving culture

I had a dream from primary school: to perform the guitar on television. My parents owned a little grocery store, so we were definitely not fancy people. Thankfully, my dad had raised me to have a lot of confidence. He often said, “You can do anything you want to do.” My dad was particularly supportive. He was my steady (坚固的) rock — always there for me.
With his help and encouragement, I was admitted to the musical arts program at Ryerson in Toronto. I really loved the program and worked hard, and I was named the most outstanding graduate. I felt like I was already living my dream. I began to think that maybe I could apply for an internship (实习资格) as a guitarist in a band for CBC or CTV.
Luckily, Global Television had just started broadcasting (播出) in Canada that year. I thought to myself: I’m new and they’re new, so if I’m going to get to know one person at Global, it might as well be the president (台长) . I was scared, but I knew deep down inside that this was what I wanted. When I called my dad and told him my plan, he said, “Good, Faye. That’s exactly what you should do.”
With my heart just about pounding out of my body, I called up the president of Global Television. Suddenly, Mr. Slaight was on the phone. “I’ve heard that your guitar skills are amazing. I could come at eleven o’ clock on Monday or at eleven o’ clock on Sunday for a tour. What would suit you better?” I caught him totally off guard. He stuttered (支吾,结巴) a bit, and then picked a day for me to try out. When I hung up, I was scared but excited. Hearing the good news, my dad said, “Don’t worry, you can make it!”
Para 1 When I arrived at the studio with my dad, I went directly onto the audition (试镜) stage.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Para 2 The air in the studio was freezing and nobody knew what was wrong with me.

B. To raise city awareness of country issues.
【答案】24. C 25. B 26. A 27. C

With traditional festivals becoming less important and imports such as Christmas and Valentine’s Day gaining widespread popularity, the public, including cultural professionals, has tended to measure traditional Chinese festivals in economic terms.
A. doubtful B. favorable
C. indifferent D. hopeful
34. From Paragraph 3, we can learn that ______.
A. traditional festivals are celebrated by more young people
B. legal celebrations reduce the risk of the disappearance of traditional culture
C. the significance of traditional festivals should be better recognized
D. young people value traditional culture but they can do little
35. The writer’s purpose for writing this article is to ______.
A. remind us that the cultural factors make traditional festivals live on
B. complain that Japan and Korea do a better job of preserving culture
C. inform the public of the importance of the globalization
D. warn people against the business role in celebrating traditional festivals
【答案】32. B 33. A 34. C 35. A

【33题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段“Some have even called for legislation (立法) to make the festival a legal Chinese Lovers’ Day, which falls on the seventh day of the seventh month of the lunar year. But the effectiveness of such a measure is in doubt, although efforts to preserve traditional festivals deserve high praise(一些人甚至呼吁通过立法将这个节日定为法定的中国情人节,它在农历七月初七。但是这样的措施的有效性令人怀疑,尽管保护传统节日的努力值得高度赞扬)”可知,有人呼吁将七夕节立法成为法定的中国情人节,但这种措施的效果令人怀疑,尽管保护传统节日的努力值得称赞。由此可推断公众对七夕节合法化的有效性持怀疑态度,故选A。
【34题详解】
推理判断题。第三段提到“Even if all traditional festivals are finally made legal, the risk of them becoming purely formalized celebrations with little meaning is not removed. If the younger generation fails to appreciate the cultural significance of these holidays, there is little that can be done(即使所有传统节日最终都合法化了,它们变成毫无意义的纯粹形式化庆祝活动的风险仍然没有消除。如果年轻一代不能欣赏这些节日的文化意义,那也没什么办法)”可知,如果年轻一代不能欣赏这些节日的文化意义,那也没什么办法,可推理出应该更好地认识传统节日的意义,故选C。
【35题详解】
推理判断题。文章最后一段指出“In fact, what makes traditional festivals unique and what keeps them alive is their cultural elements. After all, it is a unique culture that contributes to the globalization with diversity(事实上,使传统节日独特并使其延续的是它们的文化元素。毕竟,正是独特的文化为全球化带来了多样性)”可知,使传统节日独特并使其延续的是它们的文化元素,可推理出作者写作本文的目的是提醒我们文化因素使传统节日得以延续,故选A。

六、读后续写
67. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。续写的词数应为150左右。
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】 When I arrived at the studio with my dad, I went directly onto the audition (试镜) stage. I took a deep breath, trying to calm my nerves. The spotlight shone brightly on me, and I could feel the weight of everyone’s eyes on me. I started to play the guitar and everything seemed to be going well. Music filled the air. However, as I got more into the performance, I suddenly made a mistake. My heart sank. But then I saw my dad in the audience, giving me an encouraging smile. His presence gave me the strength to keep going, and I managed to finish the song.
The air in the studio was freezing and nobody knew what was wrong with me. After I finished playing, I stood there, waiting for the verdict. Mr. Slaight walked up to me and said, “Your performance was very good, but there were a few mistakes. However, I can see your passion and talent. We’d like to give you a chance.” I couldn’t believe my ears. My dad came up to me and hugged me tightly. He said, “I knew you could do it.” From that day on, I worked hard as an intern in the band. And eventually, I achieved my dream of performing the guitar on television.
