The Two Frontiers Project (2FP), supported by biotech company Seed Health, is seeking volunteers across the United States to search for extremophile microbes (极端微生物) within their households to reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) or break down environmental pollutants. Extremophiles are micro-organisms that grow in tough conditions, developing unique properties that can be of environmental benefit. “These environments, though common, copy the extreme conditions in nature,” explains Braden Tierney, director of 2FP. “They reflect environmental changes that our planet may face in the future — including rising temperatures, heightened radiation, and increased acidification of oceans and soils.” The project focuses on areas in the home with high temperatures or other extreme conditions, such as dishwashers, microwaves, or shower heads. Volunteers are asked to photograph any unusual microbial growth and provide details about their findings. If a sample interests the scientists, its DNA sample will be analyzed by them in the lab. This citizen science initiative aims to build an open-source database of extremophile microbes. The team hopes to identify organisms with carbon-absorbing capabilities. For instance, a previous 2FP expedition off the Italian island of Vulcano led to the discovery of a kind of bacteria that efficiently changes CO2 into organic fuels. The potential applications of these microbes extend beyond collecting carbon. Species that resist high levels of detergent (洗涤剂) and salt could be used for environmental cleanup in tough conditions, such as getting rid of heavy metals or petrol from polluted sites. Thermophiles (嗜热菌) that survive extreme heat might help develop clean energy sources like hydrogen. While microbial technology is still immature, it offers a promising way to address climate change. “The urgency of the climate crisis means we must explore every possible approach,” says Ara Katz, co-director of Seed Health. As scientists dig into the extremophiles hiding in our homes, we might find the key to fighting climate change in clearer sight. 1.What aspect of extremophiles does Braden Tierney mainly explain in paragraph 2? A.Their distribution areas. B.Their survival environment. C.Their development process. D.Their specific characteristics. 2.How do volunteers help scientists conduct the project? A.By sorting out micro-organisms in nature. B.By creating extreme conditions at home. C.By documenting unique microbial growth. D.By analyzing DNA samples in the lab. 3.What might extremophiles be used to do according to the text? A.Improve the efficiency of energy sources. B.Find the bacteria that can absorb carbon. C.Kill the bacteria that cause pollution at home. D.Remove pollutants in tough industrial settings. 4.What is the best title of the text? A family of African fish known as Mormyrids are weakly electric, and have special organs that can locate a nearby target, even when it’s hiding in the mud. Scientists have now developed an artificial sensor system modelled on the ability of these fish. “We developed a new strategy for 3D motion positioning by electronic skin, bio-inspired by ‘electric fish’”, says Dr. Xinge Yu, an associate professor in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at the City University of Hong Kong. The team described their e-skin sensor in a paper published on November 14 in Nature. The artificial sensor is multi-layered. One layer acts as a transmitter (发射器), which will generate an electric field once activated, and another layer acts as a receiver to detect both the direction and the distance to an object. A separate controller creates the driving signal to activate the transmitter. When an object comes within range, the electric field around the sensor is disrupted (扰乱), which in turn can be detected by the receiver. This data is then processed by a micro controller unit, which computes the position of the target object and sends that information to a smartphone or other devices. A special biogel (生物凝胶) is used in the sensor, which has the ability to transmit and receive electric signals from a pattern of micro channels on the surface. The end result is a sensor that is thin, soft and flexible, making it cosy to adapt to irregular surfaces, such as the human body. In contrast to the traditional sensor system that needs a large number of sensors to achieve spatial positioning, the new system can locate an object precisely in 3D space using just a few sensors. This significantly reduces the power consumption of data collection, transmission, and processing. The researchers hope that this sensor could one day open up a new range of wearable technologies, including sensors for human-machine interaction and thin, flexible e-skin. 1.What does paragraph 1 aim to show? A.the special ability of African fish. B.the inspiration for a new invention. C.the big challenge of locating objects. D.the reason for developing a sensor. 2.What does paragraph 3 mainly tell us about the sensor? A.Its development process. B.Its operating mechanism. C.Its main layers. D.Its environment impact. 3.What is an advantage of the new sensor system? A.Its sensitivity to different stimulations. B.Its adaptation to environmental changes. C.Its efficiency in achieving 3D positioning. D.Its speed in data collection and processing. 4.What is the best title for the text? But actual ants — unlike cars — somehow manage to avoid the stop-and-go traffic. Researchers are studying their cooperative tactics to learn how to program self-driving cars. The free flow of traffic becomes unstable as the density of cars increases on a highway. At 15 vehicles per mile per lane, one driver tapping their brakes can trigger a wave of congestion. “It’s a kind of phase transition,” like water turning from a liquid to a solid form, says Katsuhiro Nishinari, a mathematical physicist. His previous research had shown that foraging ants (觅食蚁) can maintain their flow even at high densities. In a recent study, researchers found that the ants travel in groups of three to 20 that move at nearly constant rates while keeping distances between one another — and they don’t speed up to pass others. Human drivers at rush hour rarely follow such rules. “We’re maximizing the interests of individuals, which is why, at a given point, you start to have a traffic jam,” says study co-author Nicola Pugno. But self-driving cars, if they one day become popular, would share information with nearby cars to optimize traffic flow by prioritizing constant speeds or by not passing others on the road. This vehicle network would be similar to ants using scent to coordinate. This type of distributed system can be “very strong” and resilient, Nishinari says. Still, ants can do numerous things that self-driving can’t. Ants can forge a trail as wide as they like, unlike drivers stuck on highways. The insects do sometimes jam up when confined in tunnels, but “they’ll find a way to walk on the ceiling,” she says. Plus, ants don’t crash; they can literally walk over one another. Today’s drivers can learn at least one thing from ants, Nishinari says, “by leaving room between their car and the one ahead, drivers can absorb a wave of braking in dense traffic conditions that would otherwise be amplified into a traffic jam.” 1.What enables ants to maintain smooth traffic flow even at high densities? A.Centralized command system. B.Cooperative group dynamics. C.Rapid acceleration capability. D.Advanced navigation tools. 2.How could autonomous vehicles potentially copy ants’ traffic strategies? A.Road expansion initiatives. B.Complete avoidance of braking. C.Inter-vehicle data sharing networks. D.Prioritizing top speed achievement. 3.In which aspect are ants different from self-driving cars? A.Scent-based communication. B.Traffic regulation obedience. C.Computer-controlled decision making. D.Flexible navigation and collision avoidance. 4.What would be the most appropriate title for the text? A.The Psychology Behind Human Traffic Congestion. B.Technical Barriers in Autonomous Vehicle Networks. C.Social Insects vs. Humans: Evolutionary Comparisons. Now, it’s even influencing furniture design. Belgium eco-designer Mathilde Wittock is creating furniture from discarded tennis balls. She chose to repurpose tennis balls due to their short lifespan. “It takes around 24 different manufacturing steps to produce a tennis ball, which is around five days. Then it has such a short lifespan,” Wittock told CNN. She aims to keep the 300 million tennis balls produced annually out of landfills. Wittock graduated in 2021 from Central Saint Martins with degrees in product design and natural design. Her degree project, Soundbounce, was an acoustic (隔音的) material made from recycled tennis balls, inspired by her sensitivity to noise. “Being very sensitive to noise, the tennis ball presented an opportunity to address this issue,” she said. “And, with noise pollution an ever-increasing problem, its effects are still largely unknown, but it is evident that it negatively impacts physical and mental health so creating solutions for this is key.” Creating furniture from tennis balls is challenging. Wittock cuts each ball by hand along the white line, removes the brand logo, and creates frames with holes where the taken-apart balls fit. The result is a padded (衬垫) surface excellent for sound reduction. It takes her three to four weeks to complete a chaise, which she sells for $2,900. Each ball is dyed by hand to match the client’s space. The tennis balls Wittock uses are donated from tennis clubs. She now works with the Federation of Wallonia in Brussels, who offered her their entire stock of 100,000 balls. This will last for a while as Wittock can only use around 1,800 a week. The life of these tennis balls doesn’t end as furniture. When the soft covering wears away or the rubber breaks down, the furniture pieces can be taken apart and recycled into other useful objects like playground mats. Being able to keep reusing materials is key to eco-design. Wittock’s work demonstrates how discarded items can be transformed into functional, sustainable products. 1.What was Soundbounce inspired by? A.Wittock’s love for tennis. B.Wittock’s design degrees. C.Wittock’s sensitivity to noise. D.Wittock’s wish to recycle balls. 2.How does Wittock make the furniture sound-reducing? A.By using special machines. B.By creating padded surfaces. C.By adding extra coverings. D.By choosing thick materials. 3.Why does the author mention the Federation of Wallonia? A.To show Wittock’s social skills. B.To show the large demand for balls. C.To show the support for Wittock’s work. D.To show the popularity of Wittock’s furniture. 4.What does the author think of Wittock’s work? A.It’s innovative. B.It’s wasteful. C.It’s ordinary. D.It’s expensive. 根据第二段“Her degree project, Soundbounce, was an acoustic (隔音的) material made from recycled tennis balls, inspired by her sensitivity to noise.(她的学位项目Soundbounce是一种由回收的网球制成的声学材料,灵感来自于她对噪音的敏感性)”可知,Soundbounce的灵感来自于她对噪音的敏感性。故选C。 2. 根据第三段“Creating furniture from tennis balls is challenging. Their work reveals some of the fundamental physics governing the movements of the Antarctic ice sheet and could help improve predictions about how the continent will change in the future. The Antarctic ice sheet, Earth’s largest ice mass and nearly twice the size of Australia, keeps sea levels stable by storing freshwater as ice. To understand the movement of the Antarctic ice sheet, which is shrinking more rapidly every year, existing models have typically relied on assumptions about ice’s mechanical behavior from lab experiments. “But Antarctica’s ice is much more complicated than what can be reproduced in the lab,” said Ching-Yao Lai, a professor of geophysics in the university and senior author on the paper. “Ice formed from seawater has different properties, and ice sheets may contain large cracks, air pockets, or other inconsistencies that affect movement.” Lai and her colleagues built a machine learning model to analyze the movements with satellite imagery and airplane radar. They found that the parts of the ice shelves closest to the continent are being compressed (压缩) and that the models in these areas are fairly consistent with lab experiments. However, most models have assumed that Antarctic ice has the same physical properties in all directions. In fact, as ice gets farther from the continent, it starts to be pulled out to sea. The force causes the ice to have different physical properties in different directions — a concept called anisotropy (各向异性). “Our study uncovers that most of the ice shelf is anisotropic,” said first study author Yongji Wang, a researcher in Lai’s lab. “Ice in the 5% compression zone almost has the same property while for the rest — the extension zone, it is not the case. Now based on this new method, we know that models predicting the future evolution of Antarctica should be anisotropic.” Next, researchers intend to continue to perfect their analysis with additional data from the Antarctic continent and may use these findings to understand the stresses that may cause cracks. They hope their methods will assist with more scientific discoveries and lead to new cooperation with the Earth science community. 1.What is the purpose of machine learning in the research? A.Predicting the future changes of Antarctica ice. B.Analyzing the thickness of the Antarctic ice sheet. C.Knowing the movement of the Antarctic ice sheet. D.Studying the physical properties of ice from seawater. 2.Why are existing models of ice movement not accurate enough? A.They rely too much on the data from satellites. B.They stress the impact of air pockets and cracks. C.They ignore the different properties in Antarctic ice. D.They fail to measure the size of the Antarctic ice sheet. 3.What is indicated in the underlined sentence? A.Ice behaves variably in all directions. B.Most ice shelves are in the extension zone. C.Ice in compression zone matches lab results. D.Ice shelves are pulled out of the continent to sea. 4.What can be inferred about the researchers’ future plans? A.They will build more satellite models. B.They will abandon their current methods. C.They will apply the methods to the Earth science. D.They will seek more data to improve their analysis. 【答案】1.C 2.C 3.A 4.D 【导语】本文是一篇说明文。文章主要讲述了斯坦福大学研究用机器学习分析南极冰运动及后续计划。 1.细节理解题。根据第一段“In a paper published on March 13 in Science, researchers at Stanford University used machine learning to analyze data of ice movements in Antarctica for the first time. She asked dozens of friends and coworkers to sit at her computer answering emails while she monitored their pulse and heart rate variability. Of those participants, 80% had what Stone coined “email or screen area” — shallow or suspended breathing while working on a screen. “ 3 ,” said science journalist James Nestor, the author of the bestselling book Breath: The New Science of a Lost Art, which records his investigation into the power of breath. He explained that humans have lost touch with natural breathing patterns as we spend much of the day hunched (弓身) over our screens and devices. “If you are hunched over, you can’t take that soft, slow, deep breath,” Nestor said. Breathing properly has enormous positive impacts on our health and well-being. Slow breathing lowers our stress levels, increases focus, regulates our emotions and even helps us make better decisions. 4 . Nestor suggests the simple exercise of breathing in through your nose for five to six seconds and out through your nose for five to six seconds. “As you inhale, you feel that slight expansion of that abdominal (腹部的) region, and then as you continue inhaling, try to lift that breath up to your chest area,” Nestor said. “Breathe this way for two minutes a day, and that’s going to make a difference.” Stone found that learning an instrument helped her maintain good posture and breathing. 5 . She also took ballroom dancing lessons, which she said had a similar effect. A.She kept holding her breath B.These tasks resulted in shallow chest breathing C.She found few people around her had breathing problems D.Stone wondered how common this was and set out to investigate E.Poor breathing is what you see when you look at 90% of the population F.This in turn allowed her to form better breathing habits — even while in front of a screen G.Luckily, Nestor and Stone feel confident that it’s possible to retrain our body to breathe well 【答案】1.A 2.D 3.E 4.G 5.F 【导语】本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了什么是“电子邮件或屏幕呼吸暂停”现象、产生的原因及应对方法。 1.上文提到“Linda Stone noticed something strange happening every time she sat down to answer emails. It’s not just a matter of convenience or novelty anymore — fixation on screens has become our habit, a necessity, and even an addiction. 1 Constant engagement not only consumes our time, but also steal us something far more important: peace of mind. Silence is as critical to mental health as vitamins are to physical well-being. People are particular about what foods they put in their bodies: whether organic, vegetarian, or fat-free. 2 The mental junk we absorb daily can be arguably harmful than the occasional cheeseburger or donut. The never-ending flood of sensory input taxes the brain’s limited attention resources, leaving little room for deep thinking, reflecting, or creativity. 3 Quiet time helps the brain relax, sort through what it has taken in, and regain lost mental energy. As American artist Leonard Koren suggests in his book Wabi-Sabi, silence can be’ “an emptiness full of possibilities,” a space where creativity and clarity emerge. Adding moments of quiet to your daily routine doesn’t require dramatic changes. 4 Better yet, research shows that brief exposure to nature, like a walk in the woods, lowers stress levels, reduces blood pressure, and sharpens focus. These benefits occur because green spaces and natural soundscapes provide a much-needed break from today’s busy, stressful world. Digital life crowds out silence, making simply sitting in silence almost unthinkable — yet the very moments of stillness are what our minds really need. They let us listen to our thoughts, reflect on our experiences, and connect with ourselves in a way that is impossible in the noise of modern life. 5 A.But rarely do we ask ourselves: at what cost? B.So, shouldn’t we make laws requiring quiet time every day? C.It can be as simple as pausing 30 seconds to watch clouds. D.Next time you reach for your phone, resist the urge and sit in silence. E.We check our phone 58 times a day, 30%occurring during work hours. F.But they aren’t as picky about what they are exposed to through the senses. Suddenly, her daughter let go of her hand, jumped on the train, and the doors began to close. As the train gathered speed, Squier ran alongside trying to force the door open by digging her fingers into the black rubber gasket (橡胶垫). On the other side of the glass, she could clearly see Chambers' panicked face.    The last thing she saw before the train pulled out of the station was Chambers crying and pounding her small hands against the glass. Behind her, an odd-looking young man dressed in black leather rose from his seat and started moving toward Chambers. Terrified, Squier searched for an employee. She spotted a man in a uniform, but as soon as she started to explain, she realized he was not a native English speaker, which made explaining her situation difficult. She was so shocked that her voice was barely above a whisper, too frightened to cry, and completely focused on getting this man to understand and help. Just when all seemed lost, suddenly one of her students tapped her on the shoulder. “She's back, ”the student said. Squier turned around, and there, standing safe and sound, was her little girl. 注意: (1)续写词数应为150左右; (2)请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。 Seeing her daughter, Squier's heart flooded with relief. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Squier thanked the young man warmly and learned much from the experience. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】Seeing her daughter, Squier's heart flooded with relief. She rushed forward and hugged Chambers tightly, tears of joy streaming down her face. As they calmed down, Chambers explained that the odd-looking young man in black leather hadn’t been a threat at all. Instead, he had comforted her and helped her get off at the next stop, then guided her to take the train back in the opposite direction. Squier was astonished by this unexpected turn of events.     Squier thanked the young man warmly and learned much from the experience. She realized how quickly she had judged him based on his appearance, feeling ashamed of her initial assumptions. This experience was a valuable lesson for her. She decided to be more careful and attentive when it came to her daughter's safety. She also learned people shouldn't be judged by their looks, and that there is kindness in unexpected places. From then on, she made a promise to herself to keep a closer eye on her child and to never let appearances mislead her again. 词汇激活 行为类 ①拥抱:hug/embrace ②解释:explain/account for ③引导:guide/lead 情绪类 ①高兴:joy/ravishment ②羞愧:ashamed/embarrassed 【点睛】[高分句型1] She rushed forward and hugged Chambers tightly, tears of joy streaming down her face.(使用“名词+现在分词短语”构成的独立主格结构) [高分句型2]:She realized how quickly she had judged him based on his appearance, feeling ashamed of her initial assumptions.(使用现在分词短语做状语) B (2025·山东青岛·二模)阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。 It all started with the gift. A few months before I began college, my parents surprised me with the one thing every young adult desires: a brand new laptop. That summer, I was glued to the screen, living in a digital world. I spent hours on social media, chatting with friends, and ignoring the real one around me. I was more concerned with the virtual interactions than the actual people and places around me. Being online was more important than anything else. So, when I heard my dad’s plan for our family vacation that year, I was less than thrilled. “This year,” he announced, “we’re going to try something different. We’re going to a farm.” A farm wasn’t my ideal vacation, but it was still a break from the routine. I went through the packing up and planning, barely listening to the instructions. My mind was elsewhere, on the Internet, where my conversations never stopped. I was so absorbed in my digital world that the first time I really paid attention to the real world was when we get to our destination – a remote farm. I stared out the window to see the breathtaking views outside. The air coming through the open windows was warm and carried the fresh smell of the forest. But the view wasn’t what caught my attention. The moment I got off the car, I rushed into the farmhouse. The real shock came when I tried to check my e-mail and found that I had no Internet connection. I was standing there with a long face when I heard the laughter of three children. So, I went up to them and asked, “Is the Internet available here?” “We have no Wi-Fi here.” a boy, named Ethan, said softly. And then he told me they were sons of the farm owner. I looked at him, too depressed to say anything. My laptop would be completely useless. I would live in the wilderness for a week with no way to connect to the online world. I was close to tears, afraid of the boredom I had to tolerate in the coming days. 注意: 1. 续写词数应为150左右; 2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。 Early next morning, Ethan and his brothers came to invite me to hang out with them. __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Surprisingly, I never thought of my laptop that week. __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】Early next morning, Ethan and his brothers came to invite me to hang out with them. At first, I hesitated, still upset about the lack of the Internet. But their eager faces were hard to resist, so I reluctantly went along. Ethan led us to the hen house, and we spent a while collecting eggs, with him teaching me the gentle way to handle the hens. Later, we went to the meadow, where we chased colorful butterflies and lay on the soft grass, staring at the clouds. Despite my initial reluctance, I gradually found myself getting into the activities, drawn by their simple joys. Surprisingly, I never thought of my laptop that week. Each day was filled with new adventures. We helped the farmhands with various tasks like milking cows and mending fences. In the evenings, we sat around a bonfire, roasting marshmallows and sharing stories. The warm company, the fresh air, and the beauty of nature made me realize how much I had been missing in my virtual world. By the time it was time to leave, I was filled with gratitude for this off-grid experience, knowing that real-life connections and the wonders of nature far surpassed the pleasure of the digital world. 词汇激活 行为类 ①抗拒:resist/show resistance ②参与:get into/participate in/be involved in ③意识到:realize/be aware of/recognize 情绪类 ①喜悦:joy/fun/pleasure ②感激:gratitude/appreciation/feel grateful 【点睛】[高分句型1] Later, we went to the meadow, where we chased colorful butterflies and lay on the soft grass, staring at the clouds.(运用了where引导的非限制性定语从句和现在分词作状语) [高分句型2] In the evenings, we sat around a bonfire, roasting marshmallows and sharing stories.(运用了现在分词作伴随状语) 试卷第1页,共3页 试卷第1页,共3页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$ 高考英语热点话题组合练 本卷·热点话题:语法填空A篇主要讲述了京东进军外卖业务,这标志着其扩张战略的新篇章。 JD’s entry into the takeaway business marks a new chapter in 1 (it) expansion strategy. B (2025·山东·模拟预测)Scientists are turning their attention to an unexpected place to slow global warming: the hidden corners of our own homes. A.Household Microbes Help Fight Climate Change B.A New Project Focuses on Household Cleaning C.High Technology Is Vital to Slow Global Warming D.Scientists Have Made Great Efforts to Study Extremophiles C (2025·河北衡水·三模)The ability to detect a nearby presence without seeing or touching it may sound fantastical — but it’s a real ability that some creatures have. E (2025·河北秦皇岛·三模)Tennis is a popular sport with growing impact on trends, from clothing to movies. F (2025·湖北·模拟预测)In a paper published on March 13 in Science, researchers at Stanford University used machine learning to analyze data of ice movements in Antarctica for the first time. 七选五 A (24-25高三下·河南·期中)In 2007, former Microsoft employee Linda Stone noticed something strange happening every time she sat down to answer emails. 1 . “I would inhale (吸气) in anticipation, but I wouldn’t exhale because so many emails would be streaming in,” Stone said in an interview. 2 . A.She kept holding her breath B.These tasks resulted in shallow chest breathing C.She found few people around her had breathing problems D.Stone wondered how common this was and set out to investigate E.Poor breathing is what you see when you look at 90% of the population F.This in turn allowed her to form better breathing habits — even while in front of a screen G.Luckily, Nestor and Stone feel confident that it’s possible to retrain our body to breathe well B (2025·山东潍坊·二模)In today’s hyper-connected world, most of us are flooded by an ocean of messages and social media feeds, from the moment we wake up to the instant we close our eyes. G.Just as our bodies need nutrition, our minds require silence to function well. 三、完形填空 A (24-25高三上·安徽六安·期末)The morning my 12th-grade results were declared, I was overjoyed — I had scored well in the exam. Eager to share the experience, she brought along her 8-year-old daughter, Chambers. One evening, as their visit was drawing to a close, Squier, Chambers, and the school group found themselves on a crowded platform in the London Underground. It was 5 p. m. , and the station was a sea of people. Commuters (通勤者) rushed about, some with briefcases in hand, others chatting on their phones. Squier, firmly took hold of Chambers' small hand and began carefully counting her students, making sure no one was left behind. Just at that moment, a train pulled up to the platform. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ B (2025·山东青岛·二模)阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。 It all started with the gift. __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 试卷第1页,共3页 试卷第1页,共3页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$
