My father was always a good gardener. One of my earliest memories is standing without shoes in the freshly tilled (翻耕的) soil, my hands blackened from digging in the ground.
As a child, I loved following Dad around in the garden. I remember Dad pushing the tiller ahead in perfectly straight lines. Dad loved growing all sorts of things: yellow and green onions, watermelons almost as big as me, rows of yellow corn, and our favorite-red tomatoes.
As I grew into a teenager, I didn’t get so excited about gardening with Dad. Instead of the magical land of possibility, it had turned into some kind of prison. However, as Dad grew older, his love for gardening never disappeared. After all the kids were grown and had started families of their own, Dad turned to gardening like never before. Even when he had cancer, he still took care of his garden.
But then, the cancer, bit by bit, invaded (入侵) his body. I had to do the things he used to do. What really convinced me that Dad was dying was the state of his garden that year. The rows and rows of colorful vegetables were gone. Too tired to weed (除草) them, he simply let them be. He only planted tomatoes.
A few years later, I couldn’t even bear to look at anyone’s garden without having strong memories pour over me like cold water from a bucket. Last year, I decided to plant my own garden and started out with just a few tomatoes. That morning, after breaking up an amount of soil, something caught the corner of my eye and I had to smile. It was my eight-year-old son Nathan, happily playing in the freshly tilled soil.
24. Why did the author like the garden when he was a child?
A. The garden was freshly tilled by the worker. B. He loved what his mother grew in the garden.
C. The garden was planted with colorful flowers. D. He enjoyed being in the garden with his father.
25. When all the kids started their own families, the author’s father ______.
A. stopped his gardening B. spent more time on gardening
C. turned to other hobbies D. focused on planting tomatoes
26. What can be learned about the garden when the author’s father was seriously ill?
A. The garden was almost deserted. B. The author’s son took charge of it.
C. No plants grew in the garden at all. D. It brought the author a great harvest.
27 What is the best title for the text?
A. The Changing Seasons of Life B. The Magic of Freshly Tilled Soil
C. Gardening through Generations D. A Teenager’s Love for Gardening
【答案】24. D 25. B 26. A 27. C

When Diane Gayeski, a professor at Ithaca College, receives an essay from one of her students, she runs part of it through a computer program. It is an AI tool to suggest how to improve the work. She shows her students the results and how the tool rewrote their essay. She also asks her students to do the same: run their draft through the program to see where they can make improvements.
AI is reshaping education. Both teachers and students are using the new technology. It’s reported that half of college students used AI tools in Fall 2023. At the same time, while fewer teachers used AI, the percentage grew to 22% in the fall of 2023. It is up from 9% in spring 2023.
But while some schools have formed policies on how students can or can’t use AI for schoolwork, many do not have guidelines for teachers. The practice of using AI by teachers also raises moral problems. And parents and students who are already spending hundreds of thousands of dollars on college are wondering if it is worth the time and money.
AI would allow teachers to grade papers more effectively and consistently. It can process and grade papers much faster than a human, allowing for quicker feedback(反馈) and avoiding human emotions. But Leidner, a professor at the University of Virginia noted when it came to smaller classes or assignments with less definitive answers, grading should be done by teachers to get to know more about a student’s work. She also said it would not be right to upload the material into the AI. The students need to be aware of this in advance.
Some schools are actively working on policies for both teachers and students. Nicolas Frank, a professor of philosophy at University of Lynchburg worries it’s too early. He is also concerned that some school leaders may oversimplify the problems with AI use.
Leidner, meanwhile, said universities must also be open to “regularly checking and reconsidering as the technology and uses develop.”
28. What do the numbers in the second paragraph indicate?
A. AI is developing fast in colleges.
B. AI is overused by college students and teachers.
C. AI has been used by more and more college students and teachers.
D. AI has caused many problems between college students and teachers.
29. What potential problem has AI used in college brought?
A. Economic crisis. B. Moral concerns.
C. Emotional problems. D. Interpersonal problems.
30. What does the underlined word “consistently” in the fourth paragraph mean?
A. Reliably. B. Economically.
C. Creatively. D. Correctly.
31. Which of the following may Leidner agree?
A. University leaders should simplify the problems with AI use.
B. Universities should work out policies for AI use immediately.
C. Universities should encourage students and teachers to use AI.
D. Universities should evaluate AI use at regular times as it advances.
【答案】28. A 29. B 30. A 31. D
【解析】

Cheese and red wine are basic diets over the festive period, and if you love red wine and cheese, a new study will come as music to your ears. Researchers from Iowa State University have found that drinking red wine and eating cheese can help to reduce cognitive (认知的) decline.
In the study, the researchers analyzed data from 1,787 adults aged 46 to 77, and asked them to complete questionnaires about their food and alcohol consumption (摄取). The results showed that cheese was the most protective food against age-related cognitive problems, even into late life. Daily consumption of red wine was also shown to improve cognitive function, while weekly consumption of lamb was shown to improve long-term cognitive skills. However, over-consumption of salt was found to increase the risk of cognitive decline.
Dr. Auriel Willette, who led the study, said: “I was pleasantly surprised that our results suggest that appropriately (合适地) eating cheese and drinking red wine daily are not just good for helping us cope with some diseases, but perhaps also dealing with an increasingly complex world. Although we considered whether this was just due to what rich people eat and drink, clinical trials (临床试验) at random are needed to determine if making easy changes in our diet could help our brains in great ways.”
While the reason for the link remains unclear, the researchers believe that cheese and red wine may protect some people from the effects of Alzheimer’s (阿尔茨海默病).
Brandon Klinedinst, an author of the study, added: “Depending on the genetic factors you carry, some individuals seem to be more protected from the effects of Alzheimer’s, while others seem to beat greater risk. Perhaps the silver bullet we’re looking for is improving how we eat. Knowing what that involves contributes to a better understanding of Alzheimer’s and putting this disease in an opposite path.”
32. Which of the following increases the risk of cognitive problems?
A. Taking in too much salt. B. Eating cheese properly.
C. Drinking red wine daily. D. Consuming lamb weekly.
33. What can be inferred from paragraph 3?
A. Changes in our diet help our brains in significant ways.
B. The diets of wealthy people were not taken into consideration.
C. The study results need to be proved by more clinical trials.
D. Some diseases make our world increasingly complex.
34. What does Brandon Klinedinst suggest on fighting Alzheimer’s disease?
A. Developing advanced genetic treatments. B. Focusing on improving dietary habits.
C. Increasing clinical trials for new drugs. D. Studying the diets of wealthy populations.
35. What is the study mainly about?
A. Basic diets over the festive period. B. Possible reasons for cognitive decline.
C. Feelings of pleasant music to people’s ears. D. Effects of certain diets on cognitive decline.
【答案】32. A 33. C 34. B 35. D

根据第二段中“However, over-consumption of salt was found to increase the risk of cognitive decline.(然而,过量摄入盐会增加认知能力下降的风险)”可知,摄入太多盐会增加患认知问题的风险。故选A。
【33题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段中“Although we considered whether this was just due to what rich people eat and drink, clinical trials (临床试验) at random are needed to determine if making easy changes in our diet could help our brains in great ways.(尽管我们考虑过这是否仅仅是因为富人的饮食,但需要随机进行临床试验,以确定在饮食上做出简单的改变是否能以很大的方式帮助我们的大脑。)”可推知,研究结果需要更多的临床试验来证明。故选C。
【34题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段的“Perhaps the silver bullet we’re looking for is improving how we eat.(也许我们正在寻找的灵丹妙药是改善我们的饮食方式)”可知,Brandon Klinedinst认为我们正在寻找针对阿尔茨海默病的最简单的解决方案就是改善我们的饮食习惯。故选B。
【35题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第一段中“Researchers from Iowa State University have found that drinking red wine and eating cheese can help to reduce cognitive (认知的) decline.(爱荷华州立大学的研究人员发现,喝红酒和吃奶酪有助于减少认知能力下降)”以及第二段“In the study, the researchers analyzed data from 1,787 adults aged 46 to 77, and asked them to complete questionnaires about their food and alcohol consumption (摄取). 【答案】
Understand and Respect Our Parents
Good morning, everyone.
It is an honor for me to stand here and discuss a meaningful topic — understand and respect our parents, which is a Chinese timeless virtue. As adolescents, we may occasionally take their efforts for granted, yet when reflecting/thinking deeply, we realize it is just their selfless devotion that shapes our lives. Parents sacrifice countless sleepless nights, offering not only material support but also profound wisdom to help us face life’s challenges. Their unconditional love is just the basic reason why we should show respect for them. (要点一:可以调到二段)
Respecting parents, however, requires conscious actions. Firstly, communicate sincerely. Instead of dismissing their advice, listen attentively, for their experiences are invaluable guidance. Secondly, express gratitude daily — a simple “thank you” or assisting with household chores can express our heartfelt appreciation. Notably/Especially, special occasions like birthdays or festivals offer golden opportunities to demonstrate care through thoughtful gestures. (要点二:2-3点,合理性)
In summary, not only is respecting parents a moral duty but also it is a lifelong commitment to appreciating their boundless love. Let us act now, transforming respect from words into deeds.

27. What is the best title for the text?
A. The Changing Seasons of Life B. The Magic of Freshly Tilled Soil
C. Gardening through Generations D. A Teenager’s Love for Gardening

It’s reported that half of college students used AI tools in Fall, 2023.
D
A Developing advanced genetic treatments.
