Huang Xuhua is known as the “Father of China’s Nuclear Submarines (中国核潜艇之父).” Born in 1924 in Guangdong, Huang dedicated his life to developing China’s nuclear submarine program. His work was so secretly that he disappeared from public view for 30 years, even hiding his identity from his own family.
In the 1950s, China faced many challenges in defense technology. The government decided to develop nuclear submarines to strengthen national security. Huang, a young engineer at the time, was chosen to lead this difficult project. With no experience or foreign help, Huang and his team had to start from scratch.
Huang faced countless difficulties. They lacked advanced technology and resources, out he remained determined. He once said, “I will work until my last breath for the country.” Through countless experiments and failures, Huang and his team finally succeeded. In 1970, China launched its first nuclear submarine, making it the fifth country in the world to have this technology.

Born in 1980 in a family of teachers, Wang Yaping went to university in 1997. Several years after graduation, she joined the space program and was sent to the astronaut training center. She went through much strict training and learned a lot of space flight skills. Whenever there was a new space task, she was always among the first to volunteer, eager to join in China’s space exploration (探索) activities.
On November 7th, 2021, in the Shenzhou-13 flight, Wang Yaping carried out a lot of important space experiments and spacewalks. During one of the spacewalks, there was a small problem. However, with her great calmness and skills, she quickly solved the problem with the support of the ground team. The whole process was quite difficult and dangerous.
After returning to the earth, she took an active part in various space knowledge spreading activities. She gave speeches in schools and universities to inspire the youngsters’ interest in space. She also set up a space science club to encourage students to study and research space-related knowledge. Her efforts have reached thousands of students and have successfully made more people know about space science.
Wang Yaping said that she only wanted to fulfill her duty as an astronaut and looked forward to seeing more young people take part in the remarkable cause of space exploration. She is a great role model, showing us the power of perseverance and dedication (献身) in the field of space exploration. Do you think robots are so smart? Meet Laura, a robot in the National Library in Madrid, Spain, copying out the old books and writings in its collection. See Aurora, a headless dog-sized robot used to keep birds and other animals away at an Alaskan airport. Watch another 1.8-meter-tall legless robot called EveR6, waving its arms to guide musicians through a performance.
Those robots above require artificial intelligence (AI) (人工智能). AI is a computer system. It can understand languages, make decisions and solve problems. AI can be taught skills using a process called machine learning. Humans give AI information such as books, photos or videos to train it. The more information it studies, the better it can do its job.
AI has become part of daily life. For example, when you watch TV, AI is watching you. It will know what your favorite is and sugest similar ones. In hospitals, AI is very good at suggesting treatments and can even invent new medicines, To cut down food waste, some schools introduce online systems for the students to choose meals ahead of time, In cities, AI is used to watch out for cars that make black smoke. It works together with the police and transportation teams to stop them and keep the air clean. AI can help us fight climate (气候) change by finding clever ways to reduce energy use.
Some people worry that AI will take away a large number of jobs and also fear that AI could develop out of our control and bring danger to humans, However, in the future, AI will be a more powerful production tool and help humans achieve more in less time. For example, humans imagine AI might even find a way to solve the problems of producing energy completely. Anyway, there is still a long journey for humans and AI.
11.How many robots does the writer introduce in Para.1?
12.What is the height of the robot EveR6?
13.As a computer system, what can AI do?
14.How can AI help us fight climate change?
15.Is AI helpful in your daily life? Why or why not?

Modern technology helps protect Chinese disappearing art and culture. There’s a project called ChinaVine, and through it, people can use modern technology to share Chinese culture on the Internet. That brings some traditional Chinese art back to life.
“Many traditions are in the countryside. However, more and more people are moving to cities for work.” explained Congdon, a leader of the project. Because of this, some folk traditions are changing or being lost. The Chinese view their traditional culture as an important part of history. “The valuable traditions should be protected.” he said.
To help people learn about China’s cultural heritage (遗产), the project made a website. Its members visited Chinese villages. They took pictures and noted down details (细节) about the old art forms there. They also took videos of local people. In these videos, the locals create art and share their culture. Then the project members put these videos on the website.
Batchler, a student from the US, is a member of the project. He said, “ChinaVine hopes anyone who has an interest in China can join us. I have travelled around 30 Chinese villages and made many videos about local culture.”
The materials on its website are open for all to use. This allows people from all corners of the world to easily know about the rich Chinese culture. Congdon said, “We want to add more materials to the website so that the whole world can learn more about the Chinese.”
16.What can people share through ChinaVine?
17.Why are some folk traditions changing or being lost?

Jules Verne’s novel, Around the World in Eighty Days, has inspired many people to travel around the world in unusual ways. It has also inspired several movies, TV series, theater productions and even a game. So where did Jules Verne get the idea? Jules Verne told a reporter that he had been sitting in a cafe in Paris one day when he saw a newspaper advertisement for the first-ever tourist trip around the world in 1872.
In Jules Verne’s story, a wealthy English gentleman, Phileas Fogg, accepts a bet (打赌) of £20,000 that he can travel around the world in eighty days. Phileas Fogg is a man who is very hard to please. For example, he sends away his servant just because the water he brings him is only 29℃ instead of the required 30℃. He has a very strict routine (作息) and he follows it to the letter every day. Fogg employs a new servant, Jean Passepartout, and on Wednesday, October 2nd, 1872, they set off on the journey around the world. The journey ends back in London with Fogg believing that he has arrived a day too late and that he has lost the bet. Passepartout learns that they have got the date wrong. The party traveled eastward, so they gained a day. Fogg hurries to his club and arrives there in time to win the bet and the story ends happily.
