An important meeting on wetlands kicked off on Saturday in Wuhan, China.
Wetlands are a natural water-holding system that can make polluted water clean and prevent floods (防洪). The water is home to many kinds of animals. Birds use wetlands seasonally during their migration (迁徙). Now more than half of the world’s wetlands have disappeared since the beginning of the 20th century. One night in December 2011, a bear came into the city of Vancouver in Canada. It walked through the streets, past houses, shops and offices until it found some food in bins outside a restaurant and started eating. In the morning, someone saw the bear and called the police. They came with a vet from the city zoo, put the bear in a lorry and took it back to the mountains. Luckily, the bear was safe, but what happens in other countries when big animals come into cities?

Sometimes, they are killed in traffic accidents. Human food is very bad for their teeth because it has a lot of sugar. Now, there are baboon monitors (监督员) working in Cape Town to return the animals to the countryside.
In Berlin, pigs sometimes come into the city to look for food. They eat flowers and plants from parks and gardens, and cause accidents in the streets. Elephants are the largest land animals. There are two kinds of elephants in Africa. The African bush elephant is bigger and more common. The African forest elephant is smaller and much rarer (稀罕的).
________. Yet the African forest elephant is in greater danger. People have been taking over their homes in rainforests. They’ve cut down trees to make farms and houses. And they kill the elephants for their tusks too. Their population is falling and there are fewer than 150,000 left in the wild. Yet there is good news. People are trying to protect them.
Today, most African forest elephants’ homes are in Gabon, an African country. People in Gabon are now working to help the elephants. How? There are a few ways.
The government plans to limit the number of trees people can cut down. This would protect the elephants’ homes. Workers are also building fences around the country’s national parks. That will prevent the elephants from going to nearby farms— where they might get killed by the farmers.
Leaders in Gabon are also supporting tourism. That means getting people to visit Gabon to see elephants. This can create new jobs and bring money into the country. More importantly, it can show that elephants are more valuable when they are alive.
It is necessary to save Africa’s elephants. And it’s not just because they’re beautiful. They also play a key role in keeping the forests healthy and helping our planet. So, protecting the elephants means protecting people too. In other words, helping the elephants also means helping us.

四、任务型阅读
Do you know magpies? Magpies are as much an important part of Beijing as the Palace Museum and Beijing Duck. But how much do you know about this type of birds?
In the Chinese culture, magpies are called xique, which means “the bird of happiness”. People believe that seeing magpies can bring them good luck. The birds even have a special job in the Chinese story of the Qixi Festival. It’s said that magpies would form the bridge in the sky for Niulang and Zhinyu so that they got together once a year. As a result, magpies stand for true love too.
Magpies have black and white feathers with slightly blue tails. With their special “zhazhazha” sounds from early morning till night, it is not difficult for birdwatchers to notice them. You can always see them chatting on the roof or in the branches (树枝).
Magpies have some very interesting living habits. They always live around humans. In winter, many magpies turn to a more plant-rich diet. Their diet includes around 60% vegetables. Sometimes they may look for food on the ground but not eat it right away. Instead, they will save the food for the future.
Even more surprising, they stay around the dead birds and make sad sounds. It is just like they are holding a funeral (葬礼). All these unbelievable things lead some people to believe that magpies may be the cleverest of all birds.
Well, Beijing’s noisiest bird is also one of its smartest ones. Maybe these little birds can really bring a little luck too.
36.What does the magpie’s Chinese name mean according to the article?
37.What do magpies look like?
