Flamingo (火烈鸟) images are everywhere in Florida, on tourist T-shirts, hotel names, and the Florida Lottery logo. However, real pink flamingos have been mostly gone from the state since the early 1900s, when hunters nearly wiped them out, seeking their stylish and valuable feathers (羽毛).
Now, however, flamingos seem to be returning to Florida. Birders recorded 101 wild American flamingo sightings across the state in February, according to recently released figures from Audubon Florida. Environmentalists believe many of these birds were carried into the state on the winds of storm in August 2023. Flamingos have landed in Florida after storms in the past, but they usually don’t stay for too long. This time, birders and wildlife biologists all hope that the creatures can stay there.
In recent decades, people have sometimes seen flamingos in Florida, including a well-known flamingo named Conchy, who was rescued from an airport in the Florida Keys in 2015. The data showed Conchy moved all over the southern part of the state, teaching scientists more about flamingos in Florida in two years than was known in the previous 100 years, writes Lori Rozsa.
Meanwhile, environmentalists have been working to restore (恢复) the local wetland habitats (栖息地). In the Caribbean and Mexico, protection efforts have also helped increase the number of flamingo populations. Now, those efforts seem to be paying off.
This year, forecasters are predicting a particularly bad storms season. It remains to be seen what that will mean for Florida’s burgeoning flamingo population—and other bird species, more broadly.
There may be a few silver linings, however. After storms in September 2022, the number of shorebirds found wrapped in dangerous fishing line dropped by 58 percent in southwest Florida, since fishing piers were destroyed in the storm. “We never welcome storms here in Florida, but we did welcome some passengers,” Jerry Lorenz, director of research for Audubon Florida said.

Joyce Loaiza, aged 81, lives alone, but when she returns to her apartment at a Florida senior community, she often has a chat with a friendly female voice that asks about her day. A few miles away, the same voice comforted 83-year-old Deanna Dezern when her friend died. In central New York, it plays games and music for 92-year-old Marie Broadbent, who is blind and in a hospice (救济院), and in Washington, it helps 83-year-old Jan Worrell make new friends.
The women are some of the first in the country to receive the robot ElliQ, whose creators, Intuition Robotics, say it is the only device to use artificial intelligence specifically designed to help many older Americans who live alone.
“It’s interesting. You can actually talk to ElliQ,” said Loaiza. “She’ll make comments like, ‘I would go outside if I had hands, but I can’t hold an umbrella.’”
The robot, which looks like a small table lamp, has an eyeless, mouthless head that lights up and swivels (旋转). It remembers each user’s interests and their conversations, helping plan future chats.
ElliQ tells jokes and plays music. On a video screen, it provides tours of cities and museums. It leads exercises, asks about the owner’s health and gives reminders to take medications. It can also host video calls and contact relatives, friends or doctors in an emergency. But none of the conversations are heard by the company, with the information staying on each owner’s robot.
The idea of ElliQ is for a robot that keeps seniors company by adapting to their individual personality and interests, said Dor Skuler, the CEO of the company. The average user talks with ElliQ more than 30 times daily, even 6 months after receiving it, and more than 90% report lower levels of loneliness, Skuler added.
5.How does the author introduce the topic of the text?

Scientists have learned a lot about the kinds of people need. They say that there are several kinds of food that people should eat every day, they are: (1) green and yellow vegetables of all kinds; (2) citrus (柑桔) fruits and tomatoes; (3) potatoes and other fruits and vegetables; 94) meat of all kinds, fish and eggs; (5) milk and foods made from milk; (6) bread or cereal (谷类), rice is also in this kind of food; (7) butter, or something like butter.
People in different countries and different places of the world eat different kinds of things. Foods are cooked and eaten in many different kinds of ways. People in different countries eat at different times of the day. In some places people eat once or twice a day; in other countries people eat three or four times a day. Scientists say that none of the differences is really important. It doesn’t matter whether foods are eaten raw or cooked, canned (罐装的) or frozen (冷冻的). It doesn’t matter if a person eats dinner at 4 o’clock in the afternoon or at eleven o’clock at night. The important thing is what you eat every day.
There are two problems, then, in feeding the large number of people on the earth. The first is to find some way to feed the world’s population so that no one is hungry. The second is to make sure that people everywhere have the right kinds of food to make them grow to be strong and healthy.
9.According the scientists, which of the following groups of food is the healthiest for your lunch?
A.Chicken, apples, cereal and cabbages. B.Potatoes, carrots, rice and bread.
C.Oranges, bananas, fish and tomatoes. D.Beef, pork, fish and milk,
10.It is important for people to eat ________.
A.three times a day
B.dinner at twelve o’clock
C.cooked food all the time
D.something from each of the seven kinds of food every day
11.People in different countries and different places of the world ________.
A.have the right kinds of food to eat B.cook their food in the same way
C.have their meals at the same time D.eat food in different ways
12.Which of the following is not true?
A.People in some places don’t have enough to eat.
B.There are too many people in the world.
C.One of the problems is that no one is hungry.
D.The scientists are trying to make people grow to be strong and healthy.

Video games sometimes have a bad name because they keep people indoors playing them instead of talking and playing with others face to face. However, a new study says that they might be good for young people’s brain development.
Scientists from the University of Vermont used data from the ABCD project, which is a study of brain development and health of children in the US as they move into adulthood. The results ware taken from 2,217 children aged nine or ten. They were divided into two groups. The first group never play video games while the second group play them for three or more hours a day.
The young people were set two tasks. The first one measured their reaction(反应) time by seeing how quickly they could press buttons that matched images on a screen. The second test tested their memory. They were show pictures of people’s faces and later were shown more and had to say if any of the faces were the same. During the tests, their brains were scanned with fMRI to measure brain activity.
The people who played video-games were better at the two tasks, and the fMRI scans showed that they show more brain activity in memory and attention. However, researchers don’t know if gaming improved their memory and reactions, or if they already had good memories and reactions and therefore enjoyed gaming.
The scientists hope to carry on studying the same young people as they get older to track the effects of gaming. The team could also find out in future if particular types of video games affect people’s brain activity differently.
The lead scientist on the study, Bader, said that too much screen time isn’t good for people’s mental or physical health. Although playing video games may get the brain more active than just going through videos on YouTube, it’s important to spend time outdoors in the fresh air, taking exercise and having fun with friends and family.
13.What does the ABCD project do?
A.It deals with adult brain development.
B.It studies the development of young brains.
C.It explores the harm of video games on teens.
D.H focuses on the importance of communication.
14.How did the first group perform compared with the second one?
A.They showed fewer problems in memory.
B.They already had better memory ability.
C.They showed better ability in attention.
D.They showed more attention problems.
15.What do the researchers hope to do with the same young people?
A.Track the effects of video games on them.
B.Separate bad video games from good ones.
C.Find ways to stop people from video games.
D.Find a safe time limit on playing the games.
16.what can we infer from Bader’s words?
A.The benefit of video games should be recognized.
B.YouTube videos are less harmful than video games.
C.There’re many better things to do than video games.
D.The young should be taught to stay off video games.

Cold weather has a great effect on how our minds and our bodies work. Maybe that is why there are so many expressions that use the word “cold”. For centuries, the body’s blood has been linked (联系) closely with the emotions. People who show no human emotions or feelings, for example, are said to be cold-blooded. Cold-blooded people act in a cruel way. They may do brutal (野蛮的) things to others, and not by accident. For example, a newspaper says the police are searching for a cold-blooded killer. The killer murdered someone, not in self-defense. He seemed to kill with no emotion.
Cold can affect other parts of the body, the feet, for example. Heavy socks can warm your feet, if your feet are really cold. But there is an expression — to get cold feet — that has nothing to do with cold or your feet. The expression means being afraid to do something you decided to do. For example, you agree to be president of an organization. But then you learn that all the other officers have resigned. All the work of the organization will be your duty. You are likely to get cold feet about being president when you understand the situation.
Cold can also affect your shoulder. You “give someone the cold shoulder” when you refuse to speak to him. You treat him in a distant, cold way. The expression probably comes from the physical act of turning your back towards someone, instead of speaking to him face to face. You may give a cold shoulder to a friend who has not kept a promise he made to you or to someone who has lied about you to others.
“A cold fish” is not a fish. It is a person. But it is a person who is unfriendly, unemotional and show no love or warmth. A cold fish does not offer much of himself to anyone.
“Out in the cold” is an expression often heard. It means not getting something that everybody else got. A person might say that everybody but him got a pay raise. He was left out in the cold. And it is not a pleasant place to be.
17.What does the passage intend to tell us?
A.Cold weather has a great effect on human bodies.
B.Many English expressions contain the word “cold”.
C.Cold is a word closely linked with human emotions.
D.The word “cold” has many different meanings in English.
18.What could make you get cold feet?
A.You break the leg of a child and force him to beg for money.
B.You are the only one who gets a pay raise in your company.
C.You decide to catch a thief but then you find him take out a knife.
D.You show no warmth or kindness to the people around you.
19.If the teacher gives all the boys except Tom a pen as a prize, you can say he ________.
A.is given the cold shoulder B.is left out in the cold
C.has got cold feet D.is murdered by a cold-blooded killer
20.In which part of a newspaper can we probably read this passage?
A.Culture. B.Travel. C.Technology. D.Advertisement.

Habitat loss, pesticides (农药) and climate change are threatening insect populations worldwide. In 2019, Biological Conservation reported that 40% of all insects species are declining (减少) globally and that a third of them are endangered.
And while it may sound nice to live in a world with fewer bad insects, environmental writer Oliver Milman says that human beings would be in big trouble without insects. That’s because insects play important roles in pollinating (给……授粉) plants we eat, breaking down waste in forest soil and forming the base of a food chain that other larger animals—including humans—rely upon.
“It would be an extremely terrible place to live in—and certainly not something we should ever aim for,” Milman says of an insect-free existence. “You would certainly have mass starvation and social unrest... It’d be a place where there would be smelly waste and dead bodies everywhere because insects that break down those materials would be gone.”
Milman charts the troubling decline of insects in his new book, The Insect Crisis: The Fall of the Tiny Empires That Run the World. He says that while it’s impossible to know exactly what’s happening with every insect species in the world, the overall trends are not good: The butterfly population in North America has declined quickly in the past 40 years, for example, and a U. N. assessment done in 2019 found that half a million insect species are under threat of extinction, some in the coming decades.
“The world, our surroundings, would be far quieter, far duller without insects,” he says. “When you start kind of digging down into these figures looking at the research, it’s clear that there’s something seriously wrong... There is a straight decline in most insect populations, and that spells major trouble for them but also for us.”
25.What does paragraph 2 mainly tell us about insects?
A.Their importance. B.Their classification.

Technology use seems to be the new wave of addiction hitting people of all ages. Its extreme use can be compared to the use of drugs, which is called Plugin Heroin.
The next time you’re in a crowded public place, look at the people around you. It’s hard to find someone who isn’t glued to the tiny screen, fingers moving at lightning speeds, texting their friends, emailing co-workers or listening to music. It may seem ridiculous that someone is that addicted to such a small object. I’ve seen people who seem to be at their wits’ end (不知所措) if their phone or iPad has been taken away, lost or left at home.
Some people may ask, “What’s wrong with technology use? It’s a way for people to communicate.” While this is true, the overuse of technology isn’t always appropriate in certain settings. Schools are becoming stricter about the use of cell phones, iPads and other electronics in classrooms. Various workplaces have signs hanging on their walls warning employees that “Cell phone use is not permitted” or “Cell phones are forbidden.”
Electronics may be a way for people to communicate and stay in touch with each other, but the disadvantages may outweigh the benefits. People are losing the ability to hold face-to-face conversations with others. However, it’s hard to avoid electronics in this day and age because almost everything is turning into an electronic format. Books, originally meant for paper design, are now being transferred (转存) to electronic forms. Photo albums, and even yearbooks, can now be viewed via the internet. With this growing trend, future generations are bound to become even more addicted to technology.
Is there a cure for electronic addiction? Simply turning electronics off for an hour or two a day may help to an extent, but it will not completely rid electronic addiction. There only seems to be one cure left, and it may be the hardest: self-control.
29.What is Plug-in Heroin?
A.The growing popularity of electronics.
B.The serious consequences of technology use
C.The unreasonable dependence on electronics.
D.The future possibility of technology development.
30.The second paragraph is intended to __________.
A.tell people it is ridiculous to use electronics
B.persuade people to quit electronics
C.prove electronics are harmful to people
D.show people’s addiction to electronics
31.Why is it difficult to avoid electronics nowadays?
A.Too many things are available in electronic forms
B.The design of paper books is less interesting.
C.It is a must to use electronics to keep in touch.
D.Fewer choices are left for communication.
32.In the author’s opinion, what is the best way to cure electronic addiction?
A.Turn off the electronics for an hour or two.
B.Be stricter about the use of cell phones, iPads and other electronics in classrooms
C.Learn to control yourself.
D.Cell phones are forbidden in the workplaces.

The Giza Pyramids (金字塔), built to last forever, have done just that. The tombs could date back to Egypt’s Old Kingdom and were constructed some 4,500 years ago. Egypt’s pharaohs (法老)expected to become gods in the afterlife. To prepare for the next world they built temples to the gods and massive pyramid tombs for themselves, which were filled with all the things each ruler would need to guide and support himself in the next world.
The ancient wonders at Giza were so impressive that even today scientists can’t be sure how the pyramids were built. Yet they have learned much about the people who built them. The builders were skilled, well-fed Egyptian workers who lived in a nearby city. Archaeological (考古的)digs on the attractive site have shown a highly organized community, rich with resources.
If the Pyramids helped to build ancient Egypt, they also preserved it. Giza allows us to explore an ancient world. “Many people think of the site as just a tomb in the modern sense, but it’s a lot more than that,” says Peter Der Manuelian with the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. “In these decorated tombs you have wonderful scenes of every aspect of life in ancient Egypt—so it’s not just about how Egyptians died but how they lived.”
Tomb art displays ancient farmers working on their fields and fishing. Words and texts also allow research into Egyptian grammar and language. “Almost any subject you want to study about the culture is available on the tomb walls at Giza,” Der Manuelian says.
To help make these precious resources accessible to all, Der Manuelian heads the Giza Project, an enormous collection of Giza photographs, plans, drawings, object records, and diaries that enables online visits to the site.
33.Why did Egypt’s pharaohs build the pyramids?
A.To satisfy personal needs.
B.To pay respects to gods.
C.To protect the culture.
D.To benefit local poor people.
34.What remains unclear about the pyramids?
A.Who built them.
B.How they were built.
C.Where they were.
D.When they were built.
35.What is the Giza Project intended for?
A.Raising money for the farmers.
B.Collecting drawings and photos worldwide.
C.Helping people develop fishing.
D.Providing online access to the pyramids.
36.What is the text mainly about?
A.Pyramids at Giza.
B.Modern painting art.

A study on astronauts found that a short sleep during the day up to two and a half hours long improved working memory performance. Working memory includes focusing attention on one task while holding other tasks in memory, so a poor working memory could result in errors.
Taking a short sleep may make you think more clearly for the period right after you wake up and maybe hours into the day. Taking a short sleep once or twice a week could lower the risk of heart attacks, according to a 2019 study published in the journal Heart. After tracking more than 3,400 people between the ages of 35 and 75 for slightly more than five years, the researchers found that those who enjoyed occasional short sleep — once or twice a week, for five minutes to an hour — were 48% less likely than those who didn't take a short sleep to experience a heart attack or heart failure.
A lack of quality sleep could lead to overeating because not enough sleep is believed to stimulate hunger and stop hormone (荷尔蒙) signals that communicate fullness. The findings were important because women were at high risk of fatness and sleep disorders, the researchers said, which could both be driven by a high intake of food. Taking a short sleep has been found to improve your creativity. The right side of your brain might experience a strong mental feeling during a short sleep, research suggested. The right side is the hemisphere (半球体) most associated with creative tasks, such as imagination and thinking, while the left is more logical. Researchers monitoring the brain activity of 15 people found that the right side of their brain communicated busily with itself as well as with its left part. The left side of the brain, however, remained relatively quiet. In a January 2020 study of 2,214 Chinese adults aged 60 and older, those who took afternoon sleep for five minutes to two hours showed better mental response than those who didn’t take a short sleep.
37.What do we know about the study on astronauts?
A.Taking a short sleep surely results in errors.
B.Improving working memory ability needs a long sleep.
C.Sleeping up to one and a half hour is needed during the day.
D.Having a good working memory may complete the task better.
38.What can we infer about taking a short sleep from paragraph 2?
A.It may make you think clearly all day.
B.It could reduce the risk of heart attacks.
C.It made 48% of people free from a heart attack.
D.It may cause over 3,400 persons to suffer from heart attack.
39.What does the underlined word “stimulate” in paragraph 3 mean?
A.Refer to. B.Focus on. C.Give up. D.Result in.

Your math teacher wears clothes made in 1985 and always mispronounces your name. Your English teacher loves to start classes with quick quizzes. It can be hard to think of these givers of grades as real people. But they eat pizza, watch movies and enjoy sports on weekends, just like you. So how can you get along well with your teachers?
You can do a lot of things to develop a good relationship with your teacher. First, do the obvious things: Show up in class on time with all tasks completed. Stay focused, be respectful and ask questions. Second, show an interest in the subject. Obviously, your teachers are really interested in their subjects, or they wouldn’t have decided to teach them! Show the teacher that you care about the subject—even if you’re not a math talent or fluent in French—and send the message that you are a hard-working student.
You can also schedule a private meeting in a teacher’s free time. Use this time to get extra help, ask questions, ask for information about a career (职业) in the subject or talk about your progress in class. You may be surprised to learn that your teacher is a bit more relaxed when only facing you than when teaching in front of the whole class.
What if you just don’t like the teacher? When it comes to working with teachers, one’s characteristics can come into play just as they can in any other relationships. People just naturally get along better with some people than with others; it’s impossible to like everyone all the time. Learning to work with people you don’t like is a good interpersonal (人际的) skill to have in life, no matter what your goals are.
Teachers are there for more than just homework; they know about more than their subject matters. They can help you learn how to behave as an adult and lifelong learner. Undoubtedly, there will be a few teachers along the way who you’ll always remember—and who might change your life forever.
41.How can students develop a good relationship with their teachers?
A.By learning as many subjects as possible.
B.By respecting other students in class.
C.By finishing their homework on time.
D.By developing personal interests.
42.What is important when working with teachers you don’t like?
A.Your characteristics.
B.Your interpersonal skills.
C.Your career goals.
D.Your grades in exams.
43.What can we learn from the last paragraph?
A.Teachers can help you grow up.
B.Teachers are all lifelong learners.
C.Teachers should set enough homework.
D.Teachers tend to change you completely.

If you hold up a seashell to your ear, you will hear the sea, no matter how far inland you currently are. In fact, it is not the case. So, what’s actually going on here?
One popular explanation is that you are listening to your own blood coursing through you. Popular as this blood theory is, it doesn’t hold water. “Press your ear to a shell and listen, then run around on the beach for a few minutes to increase the blood flow all through your body, and again listen to your magic shell,” Kruszelnicki wrote. “You’ll find that the loudness of the ‘sound of the sea is still the same’.”
If we truly were hearing the sound of our blood rushing through our bodies, that wouldn’t be the case: exercising makes your blood pressure rise, which would thus increase the supposed sounds being “reflected” by the shell. The fact that we don’t hear a difference before and after exercise, therefore, makes quite an evident statement.
There’s another idea that the “sea” you can hear in a shell is actually air-air flowing through the shell and out again, which creates the noise. “In a soundproof room, you won’t hear anything from a shell,” confirmed Andrew King, director of the University of Oxford’s Centre for Integrative Neuroscience. “Background noise must be present.” That’s the biggest clue as to what’s really going on here: the sounds we hear “inside” seashells are not coming from inside our bodies, but rather around them.
“You are hearing surrounding or background noise that has been increased in amplitude (振幅) by the physical characteristic of the seashell,” King explained, “the specific sounds we hear within a shell depend on the exact shape of itself-the hard, curved surfaces inside the shell cause the sound waves that enter to bounce around, increasing some frequencies while reducing others.”
Seashells may be the most poetic of ways to experience this resonance (共振), but they’re definitely not the only method - pretty much any convex (凹面的) surface will do.
44.What is the author’s attitude toward the blood theory in paragraph 2?
A.Opposing. B.Supportive. C.Defensive. D.Unconcerned.
45.What can we infer from Andrew King’s words?
A.Background noise can be heard in a soundproof room.
B.The sound from seashells is the changed noise around you.
C.The shape of seashells can help produce the same sea sound.
D.Sound waves can bounce around to increase them in your ears.
46.What is the text mainly about?
A.Why you can hear the sea from a seashell.
B.How people explore the secret of seashells.
C.Why popular beliefs sometimes prove wrong.
D.How scientists produce a sound as a seashell does.
47.What do you think the author will mention next?
A.Different types of seashells. B.Causes of the sea sound.
C.The sound in soundproof rooms. D.Ways to set off resonance.

A.It was born in the Florida Keys.
B.It was found in a zoo in southern Florida.
C.It never left the area where it was rescued.
D.It gave scientists insights into flamingos’ behavior.
3.What does the underlined phrase “silver linings” in the last paragraph probably mean?
A.Something easy. B.Something good.
C.Something popular. D.Something interesting.
4.Which can be a suitable title for the text?
A.The Impact of Storms on Florida’s Ecosystem
B.Climate Change and Its Effects on Flamingos

C.An ancient king.
D.A museum in Egypt.

40.In which section of a newspaper may this text appear?
A.Sports. B.Education. C.Health. D.Technology.

【导语】本文是一篇说明文。主要介绍了人们从海螺中听到大海的声音的原因。
44.推理判断题。从第二段中的“Popular as this blood theory is, it doesn’t hold water.“Press your ear to a shell and listen, then run around on the beach for a few minutes to increase the blood flow all through your body, and again listen to your magic shell,” Kruszelnicki wrote. “You’ll find that the loudness of the “sound of the sea ‘is still the same. ”(尽管这种血液理论很受欢迎,但它站不住脚。Kruszelnicki写道:“把你的耳朵贴在贝壳上听,然后在海滩上跑几分钟,增加全身的血液流量,然后再听你神奇的贝壳。”你会发现“大海之声”的响度还是一样的)”可知,人们运动之后听到的声音没有改变,所以blood theory是不成立的。由此推知,作者对“血液理论”持反对态度。故选A项。
45.推理判断题。根据第五段““You are hearing surrounding or background noise that has been increased in amplitude(振幅)by the physical characteristic of the seashell,” King explained, “the specific sounds we hear within a shell depend on the exact shape of itself-the hard, curved surfaces inside the shell cause the sound waves that enter to bounce around, increasing some frequencies while reducing others.”(“你听到的周围或背景噪音的振幅由于贝壳的物理特性而增加了,”King解释说,“我们在贝壳内听到的特定声音取决于它本身的确切形状——贝壳内坚硬的、弯曲的表面导致声波进入周围反弹,一些频率增加,另一些频率降低。”)”可知,从贝克里听到的声音其实是周围的声音在贝壳内部曲面反弹,因此加强了它的振幅,因此这种声音其实就是周围被贝壳增大振幅后的声音。故选B项。
46.主旨大意题。根据首段中的“If you hold up a seashell to your ear, you will hear the sea, no matter how far inland you currently are. In fact, it is not the case. So, what’s actually going on here?(如果你把一个贝壳举到耳边,你就会听到大海的声音,不管你现在在内陆有多远。事实上,事实并非如此。那么,这里到底发生了什么?)”可知,本段通过提问的形式引出本文的话题,根据第二段中的“One popular explanation is that you are listening to your own blood coursing through you. Popular as this blood theory is, it doesn’t hold water.(一种常见的解释是,你在听自己的血液在你体内流动。虽然这种血液理论很流行,但它站不住脚)”以及第四段中的“There’s another idea that the “sea” you can hear in a shell is actually air-air flowing through the shell and out again, which creates the noise.(还有一种观点认为,你在贝壳里听到的“海”实际上是空气——空气穿过贝壳又流出来,这就产生了噪音)”可知,全文解释从海贝壳听到大海的音的原因。故选A项。
47.推理判断题。根据最后一段“Seashells may be the most poetic of ways to experience this resonance(共振), but they’re definitely not the only method - pretty much any convex (凹面的) surface will do.(贝壳可能是体验这种共鸣的最诗意的方式,但它们绝对不是唯一的方法——几乎任何凸面都可以)”推知,接下来应该提到能产生共振的其他方式。故选D项。
