Days of January were passing and every girl of the girls’ school was very happy as the selections for plays and dances for the annual function were started.
Sneha’s class teacher, Pravina, asked Sneha, her favorite student, to play the leading character in a play. Because she was never allowed to play a male character, Sneha jumped with joy, but suddenly she became so serious about the costumes (戏服).
“How many times I have to tell you not to participate in plays and dances! Can’t you understand that we can’t buy or borrow the costly costume? You can take part in debates, quizes, or essay competitions in which you don’t have to spend money and you can enrich your knowledge,” her mother said angrily when Sneha told her about it.
The reason behind all this was their financial condition. Sneha always had an idea about it in her home and she was mature enough to say NO to any money demanding condition. This time, however, the desire of fame and the excitement of the activity were overcoming her fear.
Sneha went in her room hiding her sadness deep in her heart. She was so nervous about what was going to happen when she would tell Pravina about leaving the play. Would she warn her not to allow her in any competition? Now it was clear that she had to leave the play.
The next day, downhearted Sneha acted like nothing had happened and got ready for school. Her mom ordered her to say NO for the play.
Sneha always loved Pravina because whenever there was a play or dance, the girls did not need to be worried about anything related with money. She would find a way to help. But Sneha didn’t want to tell her the truth.
Paragraph l:
Sneha went to the teacher,“I don’t want to take part in the play and I’m leaving.”

It was last summer that Anna reached retirement age and left the job she loved. She spent most of her working life teaching Chinese in a high school. A good teacher must know how to deal with children. She received many honours, including outstanding teachers in the town.
Her husband had passed away earlier and her children are all abroad. She was alone guarding a large house, so her friends advised her to enter a local nursing home. However, she loved being around people and was used to dealing with young people. Fortunately, there stood a library near her home, so she often visited it.
The library is both an invaluable resource and a beautiful space. Anna always appreciates the helpful staff and broad collection of books. “Studying from home gets lonely, so just to be around other people is very helpful,” she told her friends.
However, she still felt that there was room for energy in her heart and always thought about doing something more meaningful.
One day, the sign on the librarian’s desk read: “Readers Wanted for Project Read Aloud.” Anna looked at it as the librarian handed the book that she had chosen.
“What is Project Read Aloud?” Anna asked, bursting (满怀) with curiosity.
“Here’s the brochure about it. There’s a form inside to fill out if you want to become a reader. There is no pay, by the way,” the librarian said with a smile.
She loved to sit in one of the reading chairs in the reading room with the smell of books all around her and lose herself in a book. Once home, she sat down to read the brochure, which said, “Project Read Aloud aims to provide the opportunity of hearing stories read aloud in a comfortable setting.” That was a fine goal, she thought.

“Why did Dad’s job make us move to South America anyway?” I asked Mom. “The TV shows are in Spanish and I miss going to school. The worst part is that I don’t have any friends here. All of the kids speak Spanish.”
“I know it’s hard, sweetheart. I’m lonely here too,” Mom said. “It’s hard to make friends when I can’t talk to anybody.”
Mom hugged (拥抱) me. “We’ll only be living here for eight more months.”
At that moment, eight months sounded like forever. A few days later, Dad said that a man at his work had a daughter my age. “Would you like to invite her over to play?”
“Does she speak English?”
“No,” Dad said, “but I can teach you a few Spanish words so the two of you can talk a little bit.” I shrugged ( 耸 肩 ). “It’s hard to be friends with someone when you can’t really talk to them.” Dad nodded. “I understand, but you wished for a friend.”
“I mean a friend who speaks English.”
“I know, but this might be fun anyway. I’m going to ask her dad to bring her over to our house.”
The following afternoon, Maria and her dad came over. I felt funny because I didn’t know how we’d play together without being able to talk to one another.
“Hola,” I said quietly, which means “hi” in Spanish.
Maria smiled and said something I didn’t understand. I looked at Dad and whispered (低声说), “This isn’t going to work.”
“Give it a chance,” he said.
Then Maria showed me a cardboard box. She’d brought a game called Connect Four. Dad smiled. “You don’t need to speak the same language to play that game.”
Maria and I went to my bedroom and set up the game. We took turns putting the colored disks (圆片) into the board, trying to get four in a row. Suddenly Maria smiled and pointed at the four red pieces in a row.
I smiled and said, “You won. Good game.”

An A for Mrs. B
I was sitting next to Missy in my ninth-grade world history class when Mrs. Bartlett announced a new project. In groups, we were to create a newspaper around the culture we were studying.
On a piece of paper, we wrote the names of three friends we wanted in our group. After collecting all the requests, Mrs. B.informed us that she would take into consideration the names we chose and would let us know the results the next day. I had no doubt I would get the group of my choice. Only a few people behaved normally in the class, and Missy was one of them. I knew we had chosen each other.
The next day, I anxiously waited for the class. After the bell rang, Missy and I stopped talking as Mrs. B called for our attention. She started to call out names. When she reached group three, Missy’s name was called. So, I’m in group three,I thought. The second, third and fourth members of the group were called. My name was not included. There had to be some mistake!
Then I heard it. The last group: “Mauro, Juliette, Rachel, Karina.” I could feel the tears well in my eyes. How could I face being in that group—the boy who rarely spoke English, the one girl who was always covered by skirts that went down to her ankles, and the other girl who wore weird clothes. Oh, how badly I wanted to be with my friends.
I fought back tears as I walked up to Mrs. B.She looked at me and knew what I was there for. I was determined to convince her I should be in the “good” group. “Why. . . ?” I started.
She gently placed a hand on my shoulder. “I know what you want, Karina,” she said, “but your group needs you. I need you to help them get a passing grade on this assignment. Only you can help them.”
I was stunned. I was confused. I was amazed. She had seen something in me I hadn’t seen.
“Will you help them?” she asked.
I stood straighter. “Yes,” I replied. I couldn’t believe it came out of my mouth, but it did. I had committed.

Her friend Bonnie, prepared ten rooms for the patients and made sure they were comfortable. After they were finished she grabbed Bonnie and said, “We deserve a break. Let’s get something to eat.”
Sitting across from each other in the noisy cafeteria, Alice noticed Bonnie’s face reflected a tired look that came from more than just a busy day. “You’re pretty quiet. Are you tired, or is something wrong?” Alice asked. Seeing the sincere concern in her friend’s face, Bonnie told the truth. “I can’t do this the rest of my life, Alice. I have to find a higher-paying job to provide for my family. If it weren’t for my parents keeping my kids, well, we wouldn’t make it.”
“Bonnie, you’re so good with patients, and you love working here. Why don’t you go to school and become a nurse? There’s financial help available, and I’m sure your parents would agree to keep the kids while you are in class.”
“It’s too late for me, Alice; I’m too old for school,” Bonnie said. “Honey, it’s never too late to become what you’ve dreamed of. Let me tell you how I know.” Alice began share her story few people knew. It turned out Alice had a failed marriage, which left her two daughters and some debts (债务). She struggled to make ends meet. Maya was an extraordinary student at Oakridge High School. Her days were filled with activities, from early morning swim practices to late-night studies. She was a star swimmer, admired for her talent in the pool. It was her dream that she could swim along with the top swimmers in the region, or even in the country. However, her pursuit (追求) of excellence often came at a cost — her social life. While her classmates attended parties and social events, Maya had to study the textbooks.
Despite her busy schedule, Maya took up another hobby — art. With a sketchbook (素描册) in hand, she would lose herself in a world of creativity, where time stood still. Art offered her a place where she could express herself freely.
But as the pressures of high school intensified (增强), Maya found herself struggling to keep focused. The demands of her schoolwork and her pursuit of perfection in swimming left little room for anything else. She felt as though she was lost in a sea, unable to catch her breath.
One day, Maya received an invitation to attend an important art competition. It was a golden opportunity to showcase her talent on a larger stage. The news made her excited as she imagined the possibilities. Yet, her joy was short-lived.
The competition fell on the same weekend as the regional swimming championship. Maya was faced with an impossible choice: pursue her love for art or go to the swimming competition.
As the deadline for her decision got closer, Maya felt torn between two worlds, each pulling her in opposite directions. Her heart ached at the thought of letting either one go, yet she knew that she couldn't have it all. Giving the matter careful thought, Maya realized that she had to take her pick.

In the heart of a busy city full of towering buildings, there was a small, lovely bookstore filled with lots of books from the past and present. This special place was taken care of by Eli, a young man who got it from his late parents. But as ebooks and online articles became more popular, Eli faced a tough choice: keep his family’s bookstore going or change with the times.
Life in the city moved fast, and many other shops had to close down. This left Eli’s bookstore as one of the few friendly spots left in a city that was always changing. When fewer people came to the bookstore, Eli began to worry about whether he had made the right choice. It felt like a big storm was coming, and he wasn’t sure what to do.
Then, Maya came into Eli’s life. She was a teacher who loved books a lot. She didn’t think the bookstore was old-fashioned. Instead, she saw it as a special place full of stories and history. Maya’s support made Eli feel hopeful again. She showed him that the bookstore was important not because it made money, but because it made people happy and brought them together.
Eli felt inspired by Maya and decided to do something new with the bookstore. He started having story nights every week, where people could come and tell their own stories about adventure, bravery, and love. Slowly, the bookstore became more than just a place to find books. It turned into a busy spot where people could meet and share stories, making them love reading and each other even more.
But just when things were going well, Eli and Maya found out that a big company wanted to build a shopping mall in the place where the bookstore was. This news was a big shock. The growing community and all their hard work seemed at risk. The bookstore wasn’t just a shop; it was a symbol of hope, strength, and the power of togetherness. Losing it would be a big loss, not just for them but for everyone who found peace.

Brrrring! The bell finally rang as I rushed out of the classroom. I couldn’t wait to play the song for Mia. My schoolmate Mia and I had been working for weeks on a song for Saturday’s band competition. “How to make it perfect?” I thought as I ran down the stairs.
“Hey, buddy!” David came up. “Ready for playing basketball after school? I have been practicing my shot.” He turned around quickly and shot an imaginary ball into the air. My mind spun (快速旋转) quickly too. Oh, I forgot! I forgot I had promised David a ball game!
I didn’t want to disappoint him, but I was eager to try out the new ending of the song with Mia. Maybe if I had an excuse to skip… “Hey, David,” I said, “I don’t feel so good.” I pretended to give a small cough. “Another time?” Worried about my health, David comforted me. “Sure, no problem, have a good rest, OK?”
Seeing David off, I let out a sigh of relief. Telling a lie was easier than I imagined. Now I could practice the song and David’s feelings would not be hurt. The white lie worked!
I rushed forward as Mia had been waiting for me in the music room. “Mia, I’ve got a new idea!” “Perfect!” She held her guitar with a big smile.
“That sounded great… Bob.” David stood at the door with his eyebrows raised. Oh no. It’s David. Why is he here? “Thanks,” I said, trying to think quickly. “You see…I came home and suddenly was fine. I should have met you at the court, but Mia stopped me on my way to…”

When my daughters reached the third and fourth grades, I sometimes allowed them to walk to and from school alone if the weather permitted. One warm spring day, a little dog followed them home after school. It had short legs and long lovely ears. It was the cutest dog I had ever seen and the girls begged me to keep it.
The dog was about twelve weeks old. It had no collar (项圈) or identifying marks of any sort. I didn’t know what to do. I thought about posting an advertisement but I really didn’t want to. It would break the kids’ hearts if someone should show up. Besides, its owners should have watched it more closely.
By the end of the week the dog was part of our family. It was very intelligent and good with the girls. The following week something told me to check the lost-and-found section in the local paper. One particular advertisement jumped out at me and my heart beat with fear for what I read. Someone was begging for the return of a lost dog in the neighborhood of our grade school. The owner sounded extremely eager. My hand shook, and I couldn’t bring myself to pick up the paper.
Instead, I pretended I hadn’t seen the advertisement. I quickly put paper away in the drawer and continued with my dusting. I never said a word about it to the kids or my husband.
By then we had named the dog. It was Kevin, so we called it Kevin. It followed the girls everywhere they went. When they went outside, it was one step behind them. When they did the housework, it was there to lend a hand.
There was only one problem with this seemingly perfect picture: my conscience (良心) was bothering me. I wondered in my heart whether I had to call that number in the paper and see if our Kevin was the dog they were desperately seeking. It was the most difficult thing for me to do.

57-year-old Sean Currey knew the value of treating others in the way he intended to be treated. Hence, he lived by that principle in his whole life, which eventually took him off the streets at the right time.
Sean Currey became unemployed during the pandemic, and ended up homeless, searching through dustbins (垃圾桶) around San Rafael, California, to meet his needs. Once, he made an unusual find at the bottom of a dustbin just behind a coffee shop. Looking through the purse, he discovered a series of credit cards, debit cards, healthcare cards and a business card, identifying the purse’s owner as an 80-year-old woman, Evelyn Topper.
Interestingly, the woman lived in Mill Valley, about six miles away from his location. Knowing how discouraging it was to lose one’s possessions, Currey figured he needed to return the purse to its rightful owner. Then Sean Currey gave Topper a call, using the contact details on the business card. His guess was accurate, as the elderly woman had been extremely worried since losing her purse days ago.
According to Evelyn Topper, she stopped by a coffee shop on December 9 to get a hot drink and a bubble tea for her 12-year-old granddaughter. She paid for both drinks and put the purse into her pocket. Unfortunately, the purse fell off somewhere along the way, and by the time she reached home, she discovered her purse was gone.
Evelyn Topper contacted the coffee shop immediately, receiving the heartbreaking news that her purse was not there. Next, she checked her car, and all the rooms in her apartment, but did not find it. Eventually, she concluded the purse must have been dropped somewhere on the way home.
Just when she gave up finding her purse, Topper received Currey’s call. She screamed in delight when she learned he had her purse. They met up immediately in front of a nearby shopping center, where Currey returned the purse. The woman called her daughter and granddaughter, Mikayla Gounard, to tell them what had happened. That was when Mikayla decided to repay Currey’s kindness. 注意:

Adam’s parents usually took their son to his grandparents’ house during summer holiday every year and stayed there for around 20 days. His parents didn’t agree at first but Adam insisted(坚持). They finally agreed. But they were worried about his safety. So, they taught him everything he needed to know to travel alone.

“I will never forget you,” Meryl said to his pet dog with tears rolling down his cheek (脸颊). With his head leaning to one side, Thone watched his master, “Woof, woof! Woof, woof!” He wagged his tail back and forth, seeming to understand what Meryl was talking about.
“I can’t take care of myself anymore, let alone take care of you,” Meryl cleared his throat. “Soon, I’ll move to an old people’s home, and I’m sorry to say that you can’t come along. They don’t allow dogs there, you know.” “Don’t worry, my friend. I’ll find a nice new home for you. I’ve known the owners of the new home, and they like dogs very much,” Meryl added. “With your good looks, we’ll have no trouble at all. Anyone will be proud to own such a fine dog.”
Thone wagged his tail really hard and walked proudly up and down the kitchen floor. For a moment, the familiar delicious food gave him a feeling of happiness. But then a sense of fear struck again. Thone’s tail hung between his legs and he stood very still.
“Come here.” With great difficulty, Meryl knelt down on the floor and lovingly pulled Thone close to him. He tied a ribbon (丝带) around the dog’s neck with a huge red bow, and then he attached a note to it, which said “Happy New Year! My name is Thone. For breakfast, I like bacon and eggs — even corn will do. For dinner, I prefer mashed potatoes and some meat. That’s all. I eat just two meals a day. In return, I will be your most loyal friend.”
“Woof, woof! Woof, woof!” Thone was confused and his eyes begged. The old Meryl blew his nose into his handkerchief once more. Later, hanging on to a chair, he pulled himself up from the floor. He buttoned his overcoat, reached for the dog’s leash (皮带) and softly said, “Come here, my friend.” He opened the door against a wave of cold air and stepped outside, pulling the dog behind.

【答案】Sneha went to the teacher, “I don’t want to take part in the play and I’m leaving.” Her voice was so determined that Pravina wondered why she had such a change in her attitude. “Mum says I can learn more if I take part in a debate,” she looked away, trying to hide her unwillingness. Soon, Pravina made out what really was shouting in Sneha’s deep heart. With a smile on her face, Pravina promised not only could she perform in the play but she would get the chance to join in the debate. She offered a hand to her, saying there happened to be a costume at home which could be lent to her. Excited secretly, she knew she was going to attend the show.
Pravina stood patiently, waiting for the performance to begin. She was waiting for the precious moment when Sneha appeared in the costume she bought for Sneha’s dream. As the light faded out, the lead role came on stage and caught the attention of all the audience. Confident and brave, she vividly brought the character to life. Everyone cheered and applauded when the show ended as Sneha’s first male character turned out a big success. When Sneha was ready to give back the costume to Pravina, she was told to keep it as a reminder of not easily letting go of dreams.

She submitted the form to the librarian and awaited a response. A few days later, she received a call from the library, informing her that she had been selected as a reader for the project. Anna was overjoyed and couldn’t wait to get started.
Soon, the audience began to walk in and find their seats. Anna took a deep breath and walked up to the podium. She knew that she had an important task to fulfill, and she was ready to give it her all. As she began to read, she felt the audience’s attention focused on her. She read with passion and enthusiasm, bringing the story to life for her listeners. After she finished, the audience broke into applause. Anna smiled and felt a sense of accomplishment.
Good game.”

【答案】Although I’m sure Maria didn’t understand my words, I could tell she understood my smile. It was a small but significant connection between us. We continued to play games and share laughter throughout the afternoon. I realized that even without words, we could communicate through gestures, expressions, and actions. It was a refreshing and eye-opening experience for me. In the following days, Maria and I spent more time together. We discovered that we had similar interests in music and art. We would listen to songs and try to sing along, even if we didn’t understand the lyrics. We would draw pictures and show them to each other, appreciating each other’s creativity and imagination.
As we were both laughing, I realized that although we spoke different languages, I’d actually made a friend. Friendship goes beyond words and transcends cultural barriers. It is about understanding, empathy, and a genuine connection with another person. Maria and I may have come from different backgrounds, but our shared experiences and moments of laughter brought us closer together. Living in South America was no longer a lonely and frustrating experience for me. Thanks to Maria, I had found a true friend and learned that friendship knew no language boundaries. We may not have been able to have deep conversations, but our friendship was built on the foundation of joy, acceptance, and the celebration of our differences.

Para2:
In the end, Mrs. B gave us an A on that assignment.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】Possible version 1:
I bravely walked to where the others in my group sat. Encouraged by their big smiles, I sat down and led the project. According to personal interests and what they were good at, I assigned them with different columns of the newspaper. Halfway through it, I felt myself enjoying the company of these three people. Gradually, I learned that Mauro had few friends because he was struggling with the English language; Juliette wore long skirts or dresses every day because of her religion; Rachel had a burning desire to be a fashion designer so she had a whole barrel of unique ideas. Finally, with our cooperation, our assignment was successfully finished.
In the end, Mrs. B gave us an A on that assignment. She announced to the whole class that the newspaper designed by our group was elaborately laid out and carefully edited, with rich cultural knowledge. Our joy and happiness were beyond description. After that semester ended, I always received a friendly hello from my group. Many years later, I didn’t recall anything about the newspaper, but I did feel fortunate to be given the opportunity to see in myself a potential that inspired my actions. It is Mrs B’s insight, vision and thoughtfulness that bring out the potential in four of her students. She is the one who truly deserves the grade A. Possible version 2:
I bravely walked to where the others in my group sat. Resilient student as I was, I knew that in all my academic years, this seminar got to be the hardest nut to crack. Even so, I felt relieved when I saw them beaming with delight at me. The very natural and heart-warming smiles could hardly be ignored. Following a few greetings, we plunged right into the task at hand. Some were brainstorming a string of brilliant ideas while others were investigating cultures on the Internet in an energy-draining yet worthwhile manner. Teaming up with one another, everyone shared their passion and wisdom individually and collectively.
In the end, Mrs B gave us an A on that assignment. It was thrilling to see our painstaking efforts finally paid off. We hugged tightly, sheer excitement radiating from our lightened cheeks. This cheerful episode lingered long after the project was completed, serving as a sweet reminder of my new friends. Additionally, the whole ordeal also set me reflecting on how conceited I had been to allow unreasonable grievances to dominate me in the first place. Thanks to Mrs. B, I’ve learned to appreciate others’ inner strengths as well as enlightening minds. As such, I believe grade A should ultimately belong to Mrs. B, a real mentor with a keen understanding of what education is meant for.

It was a good chance to compete with the best swimmers in the region. With each movement, she swam herself closer to her goal, leaving her competitors behind. When the final round ended, Maya beat out other racers.
As Maya stood at the award presentation, she cried for joy. Her hard work finally paid off. She realized that she didn’t regret making the decision and found the purpose she had been seeking. She had proven that it was possible to pursue what she really wanted to achieve. Maya’s journey was not just about winning competitions. It was about discovering the power within herself to get over difficulties, to follow her heart, and to enjoy the beauty of a life lived with purpose.

【答案】So, Eli and Maya decided to fight to keep the bookstore. They organized a petition and gathered signatures from the community, showing the company and the local government how much the bookstore meant to everyone. They also held events at the bookstore, inviting local artists and musicians to perform and draw attention to their cause. Their efforts paid off, and the big company eventually backed down. The shopping mall project was canceled, and the bookstore was saved.
This project led to a big success. The bookstore became even more popular, with more people coming to visit and participate in the story nights. The sense of community and togetherness grew stronger, as people realized the importance of supporting local businesses and preserving the unique charm of their neighborhood. Eli and Maya's bookstore continued to thrive, not just as a place to buy books, but as a symbol of resilience, hope, and the power of coming together to make a difference. They had proven that with passion and determination, anything is possible, and that sometimes, the smallest of places can have the biggest impact on people's lives.

I should have met you at the court, but Mia stopped me on my way to…”
At that moment, Mia and David seemed to understand something.

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】David turned around and left, leaving Mia and me standing there. I felt a mix of relief and guilt. Relief that David had not confronted me further, and guilt for having deceived him. Mia looked at me with concern, “You shouldn’t have lied, Bob.” She was right. I had avoided a conflict, but at what cost? The trust and respect of my friend? Mia’s words echoed in my head as David’s disappointed figure disappeared from view.
Mia was right, and I determined to make things right. After our practice, I headed straight to the basketball court, guitar case in hand. David was alone, shooting hoops. “David,” I called out, “I’m sorry I lied. I should have just told you I needed to practice with Mia. Here, I brought my guitar to show you I’m serious.” David looked surprised, then smiled. “It’s OK, Bob. Just don’t make a habit of it.” We played a few rounds of basketball, and then I showed him the song we were preparing. Friendship, like a good song, needs honesty and transparency to sound its best.

【答案】One possible version:
But I had to make a decision. With mixed feelings, I finally picked up my mobilephone. With butterflies in my stomach, I dialed the telephone number. Secretly, I prayed no one would answer, but someone did. The voice on the other end was that of a young woman. After describing the dog to her in detail, she immediately wanted to come over. I said that my daughters loved it very much and meanwhile apologized for not having contacted her a few days before. 30 minutes later, the bell rang and Kevin was barking. I opened the door, forcing myself to face the case.
The woman said, “Where is my dog? I would like to have a look at it.” I asked the woman to come in and she quickly bent over and hugged Kevin tightly. Kevin started wagging its tail and barking excitedly as if it had recognized someone familiar. Surprised and excited, the woman told me that she couldn’t sleep well without it and thanked us for keeping her dog for these days. She offered to give me some cash as a reward, but I refused. After she took Kevin away, I cracked a smile. I knew I had done the right thing—that puppy should return to its original owner.

注意:

_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】One possible version:
It was Mikayla’s twelfth birthday. Determined to reward Currey’s kindness, Mikayla urged her invited relatives and friends to send donations instead of gifts. She decided to direct her kind gesture to the homeless man. As a result, Mikayla ended up raising $475 at her birthday party. As more people continued showing their willingness to help, Mikayla’s mom created a GoFundMe page for the man, gathering up to $30,000.
The money collected at the birthday party changed Currey’s life. He never imagined that his honesty would be rewarded in such a pleasant way. He was very happy with the result because he needn’t go cold and hungry for a long time. With the money, he could find a room to live in. Besides, moved by his honesty, an employer approached him and offered him a job in his company. Hopefully, his gesture of honesty would encourage more people to do the right thing.

Adam lived with his parents in one city while his grandparents lived far away in another city. Adam’s parents usually took their son to his grandparents’ house during summer holiday every year and stayed there for around 20 days. Adam’s grandfather loved him very much and spent a lot of time playing with him. His grandmother always cooked delicious food for him. Adam loved his stay there. This continued for years. The boy grew up over time.
One day Adam said to his parents, “Now, I am old enough to go to grandparents’ house alone. So, please let me go by myself.”
His parents didn’t agree at first but Adam insisted(坚持). They finally agreed. But they were worried about his safety. So, they taught him everything he needed to know to travel alone.
The day came when Adam was to leave for his grandparents’ house. And his parents came to see him off at the train station. When the boy was comfortably seated on the train, his parents got off and waited for the train to leave.
While waiting, the father went to the window and kept talking to his son. He handed his son an envelope(信封) from the window and said, “Son, if you feel afraid on the way, open this and read it. It will help you to calm down.”
The boy kept that envelope in his pocket carefully and said goodbye to his parents. When the train was ready to leave, the boy smiled and told his father, “I remember everything. Don’t worry.”

At one station, a big man with cuts on his face got on the train. He sat down across from Adam and looked at him coldly. Since the boy was traveling alone for the first time, he got frightened seeing that man. So he looked away and tried to sleep. But he couldn’t help thinking about that man, especially the cuts on the man’s face. He wanted to go and ask the train conductor to change his seat but he feared to tell the conductor his idea.
Then he remembered his father’s letter. He put his hand in his pocket quietly and took out the letter. His father had written, “Don’t be afraid, my little brave man. Just imagine I am here with you on the train, in the neighbouring car.” After reading that letter, the boy’s face lit up without any fear. He put back the letter in his pocket, and then put on his headphone. With relaxing music, he soon fell asleep.

As they were walking in the empty street, dusk was beginning to fall.

【答案】After a very long time, they stopped before a large house with tall trees in its front. An idea came to Meryl. He gave up the original plan and tied Thone to the tree, giving him the usual delicious food. The moment Thone was busy enjoying his dinner, Meryl ran away, hid behind a tree and looked at him with watery eyes. Minutes later, Thone looked back but couldn’t find his owner “Woof, woof! Woof, woof!” Then the door opened and a young lady came out with a little boy following her.
Through teary eyes, the old Meryl watched from behind the tree as the boy’s mother took the note. After reading the note, the lady raised and looked around but couldn’t find anyone, so she gently took Thone into her house as if saying something kind to him. Seeing this, the old Meryl wiped his eyes with the cold sleeve of his coat with a big smile. Then he disappeared into the night, whispering, “Goodbye, my dear friend. This will be a nice home for you.”
