Not many little girls have grown up to be rocket engineers. Even fewer have gotten to go into space. But Wang Haoze has managed to do both.
In 2008, she entered Southeast University and worked hard as a student. But Wang shone not just in the classroom. She was also a good runner and often did well in long-distance races.
As a top student, Wang was able to explore new research fields. These programs were exciting but difficult. Wang once complained about the challenges. Her professor (教授), Gu Fan, gave her some advice: Always do your best, even if you don’t like it. Make hard work a habit. If you don’t, you might not know how to give your best when you finally find something you love.
Wang has kept these words in mind. After graduation, she discovered her love for space science. She began working as a rocket engine designer. Wang learned a lot and enjoyed solving problems. In just a few months, she designed a great new product.
In May 2018, China began training a new class of astronauts. Wang jumped at the chance and signed up. Thanks to her strong body and mind, she was accepted. During her training, she faced one challenge after another, but she never thought of giving up.
On October 30, 2024, Wang flew into space aboard the Shenzhou-19 spaceship. She might run into many challenges at the Tiangong space station. But without doubt, she will put her best foot forward.

A cafe in Toronto refuses to offer Wi-Fi to its customers. Its owner, Jimson Biensenstock, explains his purpose is to get customers to talk with one another instead of always using their phones.
This is a great idea. Maybe Mr. Biensenstock knows what medical studies have shown: Social connection is very important for good health and a long life.
In a study begun in 1965, the researchers found that people who were disconnected from others were about three times more likely to die than people with strong social ties. Surprisingly, they found that people with close social ties and unhealthful lifestyles actually lived longer than those with few friends but more healthful living habits.
Another study in 1988 showed that people without social ties often have more stress. These in turn, can weaken the health of nearly every bodily system, including the brain. Without social connections, blood flowing to important organs (器官) may weaken and immune function (免疫功能) may be harmed.
In a 2010 report, researchers reported similar findings. They also pointed out that social connections can boost good health by influencing people’s habits. For example, if your friends don’t smoke, you’re less likely to smoke.
Poor social connection also does harm to mental health. The support from loved ones provided by social connection can help develop a sense of meaning and purpose in life. Emma Speals of the Stanford Center wrote, “People who feel more connected to others have lower levels of unhappiness.” “In other words,” Dr. Seppala explained,“staying connected with others keeps you happy, healthy, and strong. And this good feeling makes you want to connect even more.”
Thus, for those looking for a health-improving lifestyle, it’s not enough to focus on eating your vegetables and getting regular exercise. Don’t forget to connect.
23. Why does the cafe in Toronto refuse to offer Wi-Fi?
A. To save money.
B. To make the cafe a quiet place.
C. To get customers to talk to each other.
24. What is the finding of the first two studies?
A. Strong social connections help one live longer.
B. Poor social connections can build up the bodily system.
C. People with strong social connections often have more stress.
25. Which of the following best explains the underlined word “boost” in paragraph 5?
A. Harm. B. Improve. C. Change.
26. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. The secret to running a café without Wi-Fi.
B. The importance of social connections for health.
C. The connection between regular exercise and health.

Leisa Elliott has the world’s ugliest lawn (草坪), but she’s happy about it.
Elliott lives in a small town in New Zealand. The lawn at her home is patchy (斑驳的) and has been sunburned in different parts. Elliott doesn’t look after her lawn. “Mother Nature does the watering here,” she says.
Her lawn has now won the World’s Ugliest Lawn competition, which began in 2023 in Gotland, Sweden. Gotland is very short of water, and water shortage is a growing problem around the world. The competition was created as a way to encourage people to pay attention to the problem of water shortage, and save water. “Her lawn may not win beauty competitions, but it wins hearts because it teaches us to care for nature,” the organizers said of Elliott’s lawn.
The town Elliott lives in doesn’t get much rain, but she says that when it rains, her lawn changes a lot and it is so lovely. She adds that a lot of birds and other animals visit her lawn, playing and cleaning themselves in its pond.
Mimmi Gibson, who helps organize the competition, says it was difficult to pick a winner this year. “I mean, they’re all so bad,” she says. She hopes the competition will help people think differently about the small things they can do to save water. “It’s not just a fun thing. It’s actually saving water,” she says.

These, in turn, can weaken the health of nearly every bodily system, including the brain.
A Strong social connections help one live longer.
B. Poor social connections can build up the bodily system.
C. People with strong social connections often have more stress.
25. Which of the following best explains the underlined word “boost” in paragraph 5?
A. Harm. B. Improve. C. Change.

A. The secret to running a café without Wi-Fi.
B. The importance of social connections for health.
C. The connection between regular exercise and health.

Mimmi Gibson who helps organize the competition, says it was difficult to pick a winner this year. “I mean, they’re all so bad,” she says.
