Elysia Berman remembers the moment she realized her shopping was out of control. Last December, she ducked into a store to buy a pair of gloves. And she came out with a $600 coat that she didn’t need and couldn’t afford. “That was my breaking point,” she recalls.
Berman, 35, knew she had an unhealthy relationship with shopping. So she decided to do something drastic (重大的). She’d try the no-buy challenge, a popular social media experiment that encourages people to buy less stuff. For a set time period — in her case, a whole year — she’d stop spending money on non-essential items. No clothes. No make-up. No home decorations. Instead, she’ d use what she had and buy second-hand.
The challenge is harder than it seems. Berman, who is documenting her no-buy journey on theInternet, had to break her habit of buying 10 to 30 new items a week. And as a fashion industry professional, she was surrounded by the temptation to shop.
Since starting the challenge in January, Berman says that her no-buy journey has helped her to consume more mindfully, save tens of thousands of dollars, pay down a quarter of her debt — and says her mental health has improved. “Essentially, I had gone through detox and withdrawal from the dopamine (多巴胺) you get from shopping,” she says, “I’ve seen a new level of dedication and focus that I wasn’t aware I was capable of before.”
Could you live without shopping for a year? Try the “no-buy” challenge, whether your reason is to curb spending, cut back on fast fashion or reduce your carbon footprint. (About 10% of all carbon emissions come from the fashion industry, according to the United Nations. ) If no-buy challenge for a whole year is too restrictive for you, try it out for a few months— or even a couple of weeks.
4. Why did Elysia Berman decide to take the no-buy challenge?
A. She wanted to follow a popular social media trend.
B. She became aware of her unhealthy shopping behavior.
C. She needed to save money for her career development.
D. She was influenced by some fast fashion professionals.
5. What difficulty did Berman face during the no-buy challenge?
A. Paying off her debt rapidly.
B. Limiting second-hand consumption.
C. Documenting her journey on the Internet.
D. Resisting the temptation to make purchases.
6. Which is a benefit of Berman’s no-buy journey?
A. More freedom in shopping. B. More dopamine from saving.
C. Improvement in mental health. D. Success in the fashion industry.
7. What advice does the author give to those considering the no-buy challenge?
A. Kicking the shopping habit at once.
B. Setting a very strict rule for themselves.
C. Adjusting the time-length of the challenge.
D. Focusing more on reducing carbon footprint.

If you see an enormous, deadly funnel-web spider sitting on her egg sac (卵袋), your first instinct might be to run away.
But the Australian Reptile Park (ARP) in New South Wales is urging residents of nearby Sydney to suppress that fear, remain calm, and carefully collect both the spider and her eggs in a secure container so they can be used to make life-saving antivenom
Funnel-webs, whose most dangerous species lives in and around Sydney, are known for their deadly, fast-acting venom. Before the antivenom was introduced in 1981, 13 people died as a result of funnel-web bites. Since its introduction, there have been no fatalities.
The Australian Reptile Park issues this callout to the public every November when the spiders’ breeding season begins and stresses its importance in helping to save lives. The zoo is the sole supplier of funnel-web spider antivenom, which it produces by milking the spiders collected.
“With breeding season upon us and the weather creating ideal conditions, we rely on spider donations more than ever,” the zoo’s spider keeper, Emma Teni, said in a statement. “Male funnel-web spiders have short lifespans, and with approximately 150 spiders required to make just one small bottle of antivenom, we need the public’s help to ensure we have enough venom to meet demand.”
The spiders frequent cool, damp areas with dense leaves, though the zoo warned that they can also be found in homes — especially in places like piles of laundry, shoes left outside, swimming pools and debris in gardens.
People whose lives had been saved by the antivenom also urged the public to participate in the program. “ARP and your antivenom program saved my life in 1994,” Nicole Webber commented on the Australian Reptile Park’s Facebook post. “I can only thank you all. Please do support the program with safely captured spiders and finance.”
8. What is the ARP asking residents to do with funnel-web spiders?
A. Run away from them. B. Collect them in a container.
C. Display them in the park center. D. Protect their endangered habitats.
9. What can we learn from Emma Teni’s words?
A. The zoo may lack antivenom without public help.
B. The breeding season is the best time to study spiders.
C. The public has shown less interest in donating spiders.
D. The high demand for antivenom is barely met every year.
10. What is the purpose of the last paragraph?
A To show the popularity of the ARP.
B. To express gratitude to the government.
C. To inspire people to participate in the program.
D. To emphasize financial difficulties of the program.
11. Which can be the best title of the passage?
A. Funnel-Web Spiders: Most Dangerous Spider Species
B. Australian Reptile Park: A Call for Community Reflection
C. Saving Lives: Funnel-Web Spider Antivenom Production
D. From Fear to Rescue: The Urgent Spider Collection Drive

Good relationships play a crucial role in maintaining our well-being, safeguarding us from various health issues and potentially increasing our lifespan. With the remarkable progress of AI, chatbots have emerged as versatile tools, functioning as personalized therapists, companions, and even romantic partners, leading to millions of downloads of related apps.
MIT sociologist and psychologist Sherry Turkle has been delving into the relationship between humans and technology for decades. Her latest research centers on “artificial intimacy”. In a case, Turkle documented a man in a stable marriage who has formed a deep romantic connection with a chatbot “girlfriend”. He reported that he respected his wife, but she was busy taking care of their kids, and he felt they had lost their romantic spark. So he turned to a chatbot to express his thoughts, ideas, fears, and anxieties. Turkle pointed out that such relationships create an illusion of intimacy, which is a false sense of human closeness, lack genuine empathy, and may set unrealistic expectations for real-life human relationships.
There are indeed some potential health benefits to these AI-based relationships. Therapy bots can break down the barriers of accessibility and affordability that otherwise hinder people from seeking mental health treatment. Personal assistant bots can remind people to take their medications, or help them stop smoking. However, drawbacks also exist. There are concerns about the chatbots offering harmful advice, especially to those in vulnerable mental states, and serious privacy issues as user data is collected without sufficient user control. According to Turkle, as soon as a user begins chatting with a bot, thousands of trackers go to work collecting data about them, including any private thoughts they shared.
If you’re thinking of engaging with chatbots in this deeper, more intimate way, Turkle suggests that we should constantly bear in mind that they are not human, and we should always cherish the not-so-pleasant aspects of human relationships. Stress, friction, pushback and vulnerability are what allow us to experience a full range of emotions. It’s what makes us human.
12. What does the underlined word “versatile” in Para.1 probably mean?
A. Multi-functional. B. Well-designed.
C. Long-standing. D. Tailor-made.
13. What can be inferred from the example of the married man?
A. Chatbots have little influence on real-life relationships.
B. Married people develop attachments to chatbots easily.
C. Chatbots can produce an unrea l feeling of closeness.
D. AI provides us with emotional support in real social life.
14. What is the main idea of paragraph 3?
A. The future prospects of AI in different fields.
B. The pros and cons of AI-human relationships.
C. The comparison between different types of chatbots.
D. The importance of privacy protection in AI technology.
15. What is Turkle’s attitude toward using chatbots?
A. Cautious. B. Ambiguous.
C. Supportive. D. Disgusting.

Everyone is hiding something — but embracing that secret part of yourself can change everything.
My birth was a little more dramatic than the standard way a baby enters the world. Within minutes of coming out, I was taken to another room while doctors gave my parents the bad news: I was born missing my left hand.
Indeed, that announcement of my limb difference would come to define the rest of my life, and it might have been a disaster if it hadn’t been for what happened next. I’m told that a nurse wrapped me up, took me back into the room, placed me in my mother’s arms and instructed: “You will take her home and love her. You will raise her like you would for any child. You will treat her as normal.”
My parents took that admonition (告诫) seriously, and for the most part, it was great. As kids do,I quickly learned to adapt. I had my friend Jeff who had the similar experience. I figured out a way to do everything with one hand. I played sports, excelled in school and had plays with friends. While I did get some stares and“polite” questions about my disability, I was lucky because I wasn’t made fun of for my limb difference.
However, not every challenge was that simple. That fact that I was different hit me hard on my first day of junior high school. I was 13, an age when kids are already very self-conscious. I remember getting on the yellow school bus and one of the other kids stared just a little too long at my left arm.The staring made me frightened and lose all my confidence in a way it never had before, and I felt a sudden urge to hide my hand, so I immediately slipped it into my pocket.
I told myself that I’d just hide it that one day, while I was trying to make friends. But one day of hiding turned into a week, which turned into a month, even years.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150个左右;
I spent the next decades keeping my limb difference hidden at all times.
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Interestingly, my encounter with Jeff convinced me to stop hiding my limb difference.

Once the numbers are clinically separated from emotion, a surprising guidebook to an eco-friendly life emerges. Hannah Ritchie’ s cautious optimism about global warming and her data-first approach make this book an invaluable chaser to climate anxiety.

The Burning Earth by Sunil Amrith部分“First, don’t be put off by the title. The Burning Earth is an uplifting book, rather than a depressing one, though it’s a history of the terrible things human beings have done to the planet. The author moves smoothly from how global conquest and war reshaped Earth from 1218 onward to fascinating cultural analysis through an environmental lens. (首先,别被书名吓跑。《燃烧的地球》是一本令人振奋的书,而非令人沮丧之作,尽管它讲述的是人类对地球所做的种种可怕之事的历史。作者从1218年起全球征服与战争如何重塑地球,自然流畅地过渡到从环境视角进行引人入胜的文化分析。)”可知,这本书讲述了人类对地球所做的可怕事情的历史,从全球征服和战争如何重塑地球等方面进行了阐述;根据Not the End of the World by Hannah Ritchie部分的“Not the End of the World examines the evidence on pollution, extinction threats and deforestation caused by human activities. (《并非世界末日》审视了人类活动造成的污染、物种灭绝威胁和森林砍伐等方面的证据。)”可知,这本书研究了人类活动造成的污染、灭绝威胁和森林砍伐等证据。所以这两本书的共同之处是都涉及了与人类相关的环境问题。故选D项。

B 5. D 6. C 7. C

A. To show the popularity of the ARP.
B. To express gratitude to the government.
C. To inspire people to participate in the program.
D. To emphasize financial difficulties of the program.
11. Which can be the best title of the passage?
A. Funnel-Web Spiders: Most Dangerous Spider Species
B. Australian Reptile Park: A Call for Community Reflection
C. Saving Lives: Funnel-Web Spider Antivenom Production
D. From Fear to Rescue: The Urgent Spider Collection Drive
B 9. A 10. C 11. D

根据第二段“But the Australian Reptile Park (ARP) in New South Wales is urging residents of nearby Sydney to suppress that fear, remain calm, and carefully collect both the spider and her eggs in a secure container so they can be used to make life-saving antivenom (抗毒血清). (但位于新南威尔士州的澳大利亚爬行动物公园(ARP)正在敦促附近悉尼的居民克服这种恐惧,保持冷静,并小心地将蜘蛛及其卵收集到一个安全的容器中,以便用来制造救命的抗毒血清。)”可知,ARP要求居民把漏斗网蜘蛛收集在容器里。故选B项。
【9题详解】
推理判断题。根据第五段““With breeding season upon us and the weather creating ideal conditions, we rely on spider donations more than ever,” the zoo’s spider keeper, Emma Teni, said in a statement. “Male funnel-web spiders have short lifespans, and with approximately 150 spiders required to make just one small bottle of antivenom, we need the public’s help to ensure we have enough venom to meet demand.” (该动物园的蜘蛛饲养员艾玛・特尼在一份声明中表示:“随着繁殖季节的到来,天气也创造了理想的条件,我们比以往任何时候都更依赖蜘蛛的捐赠。雄性漏斗网蜘蛛寿命较短,仅制作一小瓶抗蛇毒血清就大约需要150只蜘蛛,我们需要公众的帮助,以确保有足够的毒液来满足需求。”)”可推知,如果没有公众的帮助,动物园可能会缺乏抗毒血清。故选A项。
根据最后一段“People whose lives had been saved by the antivenom also urged the public to participate in the program. “ARP and your antivenom program saved my life in 1994,” Nicole Webber commented on the Australian Reptile Park’s Facebook post. “I can only thank you all. Please do support the program with safely captured spiders and finance.”
所以D选项“From Fear to Rescue: The Urgent Spider Collection Drive (从恐惧到救援:紧急的蜘蛛收集行动)”,最具概括性,最适宜作为文章标题使用。故选D项。

A. Cautious. B. Ambiguous.
C. Supportive. D. Disgusting.
A 13. C 14. B 15. A

根据划线词后的“functioning as personalized therapists, companions, and even romantic partners (充当个性化的治疗师、伴侣,甚至是恋爱对象)”可知,聊天机器人有很多功能,由此猜测versatile与Multi-functional意思相近,意为“多功能的”。故选A项。
根据第二段中的“In a case, Turkle documented a man in a stable marriage who has formed a deep romantic connection with a chatbot “girlfriend”.
第三段首句“There are indeed some potential health benefits to these AI-based relationships. (这些基于人工智能的关系确实可能对健康有一些潜在益处)”指出基于人工智能的关系确实有一些潜在的健康益处,接着列举了治疗机器人和个人助理机器人的好处;随后通过“However, drawbacks also exist. (然而,缺点也存在)”转折,指出聊天机器人存在提供有害建议和严重隐私问题等弊端。所以该段主要讲的是人工智能与人类关系的利弊。故选B项。
【15题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段第一句“If you’re thinking of engaging with chatbots in this deeper, more intimate way, Turkle suggests that we should constantly bear in mind that they are not human, and we should always cherish the not-so-pleasant aspects of human relationships. Stress, friction, pushback and vulnerability are what allow us to experience a full range of emotions. It’s what makes us human. 故选A项。

故填 which。
故填by。
故填the。
故填was admitted。
“focus on doing sth.”
根据句意可知,“he adapted some classic plays into English versions”的目的是“connect with Western audiences and learners better”,所以用动词不定式作目的状语,且位于句首,首字母需大写。故填To connect。
“in recognition of...”

注意:
1.续写词数应为150个左右;
I spent the next decades keeping my limb difference hidden at all times.
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Interestingly, my encounter with Jeff convinced me to stop hiding my limb difference.
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
I spent the next decades keeping my limb difference hidden at all times. I’d keep it in my pocket, cover it with extra-long sleeves or put it behind bags or underneath jackets. In my mind, I had decided that my missing hand made me ugly and that if people knew about it, they would be scared of me and not want to be around me anymore.Honestly, I was terrified that if I exposed my limb difference, people would keep me at a distance. I felt lonely and scared all the time.
Interestingly, my encounter with Jeff convinced me to stop hiding my limb difference. Jeff was a disabled man who understood me very well. He always inspired me to love myself. His positivity deeply impressed me. We chatted and shared a lot before one day, I felt ready to unhide my limb difference to him. He encouraged me to see my limb difference as something unique and beautiful. It was a life-changing experience, and through that process, I learned to love myself. This ability to love myself changed how I lived my entire life, and it made me happier.
