A“spark bird” is the species that inspires someone to start bird watching, namely birding. For Trish O’Kane, that was the northern cardinal (红衣风头鸟).
In 2005, a terrible hurricane (飓风) hit Trish’s hometown and she had to face the loss of her home. In watching cardinals and other birds, she found relief. Soon, Trish started bringing her students along. “My students stared at me in disbelief when I told them I’d never cared about birds before.” Trish wrote in her book Birding to Change the World, “I suddenly wondered how many creatures would die because of the way we lived.” It was then that she decided to work on environmental protection.
Most of the book focuses on Trish’s efforts to protect Warner Park, a great location for birding. Her activism snowballed into a local bird watching and protecting organization. This finally became part of Trish’s doctoral research, along with a birding class pairing middle school students with college-student advisors (指导教师).
The book tells readers that a good knowledge of nature doesn’t require a degree. Take Jeremy, a seemingly uninterested boy in Trish’s birding class. During a field trip, the normally quiet boy started talking excitedly about the bunting, a small blue bird—he’d secretly studied the field guide given by his advisor.
Birding to Change the World shows how people and birds today depend on one another. “For thousands of years, we have seen birds as a symbol of liberation (解放).” Trish wrote, “In my case, it is liberation from the sadness and depression that the hurricane brought. Thirty-seven was old enough. Most people learn to drive in their 20s, but I never got around to it. My life was filled with studies and activities in college at that time. And one morning last fall, I found myself trying to master the foot movements. The first time my instructor, Josh, opened the hood (引擎盖), I looked closely at the things inside and felt excited. That excitement, though, lasted only about three minutes into the first lesson. Every time the car picked up speed, I felt nervous and put my foot on the brakes (刹车). “We made it to nearly four miles per hour,” said Josh. After the lesson, I felt down. I hit my head against the steering wheel (方向盘). Until that moment, I hadn’t realized that was where the horn (喇叭) was. I felt so embarrassed.
After three months of daily practice, at last I was ready to be onto the real roads. “Wow! This is freedom!” I shouted. “This is still only 18 miles per hour,” Josh said. “Look how many cars are behind us.” I sped up and held my breath. Each time, it was a little easier.
Finally, the test was coming. The night before the big day, I was so nervous that I woke up every hour. Honestly, I was worried to fail. But I passed. Born in 193 in New Jersey, Dr Sylvia Earle would spend her days in the wild simply exploring the beautiful wonders of it. From insects to plant bodies, young Earle was amazed by it all. She lived on a farm, and she had wildlife within walking distance from her house. Her parents never held her back and only encouraged her to learn more about these things. At an early age, Earle and her family moved to Clearwater, Florida. This allowed Earle to develop a unique understanding and appreciation for all kinds of nature. The educational journey of Earle went smoothly. She studied at Florida State University and supported herself by working at college laboratories. As a result of her excellent academic performance, Earle worked as a Harvard research member in 1967.
Like many women in the work field, Earle had to carry out two work shifts (轮班) every day: one at her home and the other at her office. In 1964, she had to leave behind her children for a six-week expedition (考察) in the Indian Ocean. Then, in 1968, she had to travel a hundred feet below the waters of the Bahamas in the submersible (潜水器) Deep Diver while she was four months pregnant (怀孕). These amazing efforts of Earle for the field of oceanography set her apart from other scientists. In 1979, she became the first woman to walk the ocean floor 381 meters below the surface.
In 1970, she headed an all-women expedition 50 feet underwater for two weeks. She led the team of oceanographers’ research aboard the Tektite underwater laboratory. After winning much fame from the expedition, Earle moved on to write for National Geographic. Under the National Geographic Society, she led the five-year program of Sustainable Seas Expeditions from 1998 to 2002. She even became a speaker to let the public know about environmental damage.

Passage 3
I was a very active child, always running around and crashing into things. After the third time I needed stitches (缝合针), a doctor suggested fishing to calm me down. But since I’d nearly drowned (淹死) a few years before, my mother ruled water out of my life. Finally, she settled on reading as the only solution to my condition.
For one hour each day, I was forced to sit and read. I cried so hard that I couldn’t see the letters on the page. Then my teacher uncle stepped in with a pile of books. He said all I had to do was read the first twenty pages of a book. If I was still bored after that, I could put it down and pick up another.
My first pick was Roald Dahl’s The Enormous Crocodile, and after twenty pages, I fell out of my chair laughing. In the story, a crocodile tries to eat children by pretending to be a seesaw (跷跷板). I followed this up with Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and Fantastic Mr. Fox. Their quick plots and simple messages were very satisfying to read.
Little by little, the books became longer and more challenging. I was in the middle of reading The Lord ofthe Rings when my mother complained that I was reading too much and that I should run around outside like I used to. But by then it was too late—I couldn’t stop reading. I began eagerly reading serious novels like Adventures ofHuckleberry Finn. I will never forget the scene where Huck is shocked that his friend Jim’s blood is red, not black. That moment taught me how stupid it is to judge someone by the color of their skin.
To this day, I think of books as a secret friend to whom I can always turn for advice. A good book must do two things: entertain and educate. If a book doesn’t interest you after twenty pages, put it down and try another one.

At first glance, 15-year-old Kenan Pala seems like a typical teenager. But he founded Kids 4 Community, a San Diego-based organization that offers volunteer projects for kids, when he was just 12.
The idea came out of his family’s experience. Kenan’s parents came to the USA from Turkey in 1998 and set up a company. “The journey was filed with hardship.” said Kenan’s mom, “But for the help we got along the way, we wouldn’t have been where we are.” The Palas wanted their children to remember this, encouraging them to give back to the community.
Anyone can work with Kids 4 Commumiy, but its events are mainly for kids. Kenan’s organization aims to raise youths’ involvement (参与) in community efforts because many organizations don’t let children volunteer.
Every year, Kids 4 Community volunteers make 2, 000 hygiene kits (卫生用品包) including shampoo, toothbrushes and toothpaste, which would be given away to the needy through Christmas Day. In fall, the group’s efforts are focused on disaster victims (受害者). Over the years, the organization has made numerous care packages for survivors of earthquakes and hurricanes.

Have you ever wanted to have a robot to help you out around the house? Wouldn’t it be nice to have a helper who would take care of the dishes, do your laundry, keep the house clean, and maybe even go to the store to do your shopping for you? Some robots can take care of some of these things already, but robots that use artificial intelligence are the ones that a lot of people are holding out for. Not only will these robots be able to take care of chores, but they will be able to learn as well.
There are some types of robots that already use a form of artificial intelligence called “swarm intelligence”. As an example of how this works, scientists have created underwater robots that will be used to repair coral reefs that have been damaged. What these robots do is work together to rebuild damaged reefs. As they communicate, each one knows what has been done in one area of a reef and can help build other areas or build onto something that another robot has done. Working together, the robots create a new reef that can then be left to grow and thrive on its own.
Amazon, the major electronic commerce company, has recently come out with an ingenious idea. Instead of having a package delivered to a customer via delivery truck, Amazon will send out flying drones(无人驾驶飞机)that will bring a package to a person’s house for delivery almost immediately. Just think about how amazing it would be when you order a small item from Amazon, choose immediate delivery, and within an hour a drone lands in your front yard and leaves your package for you. These types of robots could turn out to be a dream come true for customers who like to get their orders superfast!

Passage 1
It’s a common experience: you’re looking through a social media page, and you see pictures of friends traveling or going to parties. Suddenly, you start to wonder, “Am I missing out on something fun or exciting?” This experience is known as FOMO—the fear of missing out. To some degree, people have always worried about missing out on social events. But with the rise of social media, FOMO is becoming much more common.
★ For some people, it leads to an obsession (着迷) with checking their phones to find out what others are doing. Even while doing things that are fun or necessary, they can feel like there’s something better going on elsewhere. This strong wish to connect can make them disconnected from whom they’re actually with and prevent them from being satisfied with the good things in their lives. It can even be dangerous: some people try to check messages while driving.
So what can you do to overcome FOMO? Firstly, it’s important to remember that what people choose to post on social media does not necessarily reflect their whole life. It might also be necessary to turn off your phone or log out of social media for a while. Stay away from the continuous reminders of everything that’s happening in the world. You can even set particular times in your day to check email and social media. By stepping away for a time, you can view other people’s lives in a reasonable way. Finally, focus on the things in front of you. When you fully throw yourself into life, you’ll worry less about what you’re not doing.
Don’t let the fear of missing out cause you to miss out on the good things you have in life. Relax, enjoy what you do and let other people enjoy their lives without envying them!

Passage 3
On January 20, 2025, a Chinese tech company named DeepSeek made a new AI called DeepSeek-R1.
This smart program can solve math problems, write code (代码), and answer questions like top models such as OpenAI’s GPT-4o, but it costs much less to build. The team spent only $ 5.58 million (1/70 of OpenAI’s cost) and used 2,048 computer chips (计算机芯片) for two months. This shows that good ideas can beat big money.
DeepSeek-R1 learns by trying many times and getting better, like how students practice math. Other AIs need many prepared examples, but R1 improves by itself. For example, in a global math test, it got 79.8% right, slightly higher than OpenAI’s model. A simple version of R1 can even run on low-cost computers, helping schools and small companies.
DeepSeek-R1 is free to use and change. On its first day online, over 19,000 programmers worldwide started projects to study it. A German scientist said experiments with R1 cost $ 10 instead of $ 300 with other AIs. Even Meta ( a famous U.S. tech company ) top scientist said, “This kind of free AI could change the world.”
U.S. tech companies are worried. Meta plans to spend $ 65 billion more on AI research. Experts say China is catching up fast. A report in Nature magazine called R1 a “big step forward”, showing that smart ideas beat expensive tools.

Passage 4
Imagine this: You jump into a car on a weekend morning, and it takes you wherever you want to go—no directions needed. When it drops you off, it heads home on its own, so you don’t need to worry about parking. That’s what self-driving cars can do.
A self-driving car is also called a driver-less car. It senses its environment and operates without human involvement (参与). Depending on the level of driving automation (自动化), these cars require different degrees of human involvement. At higher levels, a human passenger may not need to take control or even be in the vehicle at all. However, at lower levels, human involvement might still be necessary. An autonomous vehicle isn’t some simple small tool. “It’s a system, a collection of inventions applied (应用) in a novel way,” reported Wired magazine.
Developing self-driving cars takes a lot of time and resources, but the advantages are promising. For example, automation could markedly reduce road accidents, as according to research in the United States, 94% of accidents are caused by the drivers’ own operational mistakes.
Self-driving cars can also help even more, like the people with disabilities. More importantly, they can help reduce energy use and air pollution by less traffic jams and unnecessary operations.
Many well-known companies worldwide, such as Baidu and Tesla, have entered the self-driving car industry. According to Wired, autonomous technology could add $ 7 trillion (万亿) (more than 49 trillion yuan) and save hundreds of thousands of lives in the near future. Research from Goldman Sachs, a famous bank, suggests that self-driving cars will make up 10 percent of new vehicle sales by 2030.

Passage 5
Fireworks causing air pollution
In Southern California, New Year’s Eve fireworks caused problems, making the air in Los Angeles unsafe to breathe. Fireworks make the air dirty and are bad for health and the natural world. Fireworks can also start fires. Some areas, like the SanGabriel Mountains, are very dry and windy, meaning fires can spread quickly. To improve community service, local governments warn people not to use fireworks or anything that can make a fire. If someone has unlawful fireworks, they could get a fine or go to jail (监狱).Students create a mini forest
In the US, a group of students at a school near Portland, Oregon, are creating a “tiny forest” using something called the Miyawaki Method. They have planted 600 plants and trees in an area as small as a tennis court. The method is named after a Japanese botanist (植物学家), Akira Miyawaki. The idea for the tiny forest started when their social studies teacher, Mr. Walsh, learned about it on a BBC radio
program in 2021. Now, after almost four years, the trees have grown to almost 20 feet tall.
The students who took part in planting the forest hope it can make the students coming after them. They want to teach others about getting in touch with nature and encourage them to do something to fight against climate change.New freedom for Mickey Mouse
Artists and writers can now use Mickey and Minnie Mouse freely. This change comes after 96 years. Disney cannot object (反对) to this, but there are some rules. This change is for the old versions (版本) of Mickey, like the black-and-white Mickey from Steamboat Willie.
Disney still controls the later versions of Mickey, like Sorcerer Mickey from Fantasia. Also, Disney has a special mark on Mickey, so nobody else can use it like they do. You can not use Mickey Mouse as a mascot (吉祥物). But if you want to make your own Steamboat Willie, go ahead and be creative!

A.To teach classmates how to plant trees. B.To show respect for a Japanese botanist.
C.To help other students learn botanical better. D.To push others to protect the environment.

Bird by bird, they open up a new joyful pathway in my life.”
1.What made Trish decide to work on environmental protection?
A.The wish to raise her students’ interest in bird watching. B.An inspiration from birding after the hurricane.
C.The serious harm she did to birds. D.Her students’ disbelief in her.
2.The underlined word “This” in Para.3 refers to “_______”.
A.How she protected Warner Park B.Trish’s birding class

A.Children learn more from nature than books.
B.Interest in nature differs between kids and adults.
C.All kids are born curious about outdoor activities.
D.The abilities of children can be unlocked with proper guide.
4.What might Trish think of bird watching?
A.Stressful and depressing. B.Enjoyable and meaningful.
C.Relaxing but confusing. D.Risky bu exciting.
5.The best title for the passage would be “________”.
A.The Power of Birding B.After the Hurricane
C.An Environmentalist’s Life Journey D.Birds, a Symbol of Liberation

Passage 1
When the examiner gave me the news, I felt a sense of achievement. I was bad at driving at first, and I had done it in the end. I realized that taking actions matters most.

Passage 5
