The Jane Austen Book Box
The Book Box is a new JASNA grant (补助) program, designed to encourage the love of literature and Jane Austen, and to help get the next generation as fascinated by the written word as we are! Local educators of all kinds who want to teach a unit about Austen are invited to submit their proposals. If selected, we’ll pay for the books — including a copy for each student to take home and keep in their personal library.
Who is qualified?
Schools, libraries, after-school programs, and other youth-focused community groups in the New York City. Book Boxes are not available for individuals or for-profit organizations, and they are not intended for resale. If you are located outside of this region, you may want to consider applying to the JASNA national Book Box Program.
What happens after you finish your unit on Jane Austen?
When you have completed your unit, the person who receives the Book Box must submit a report on the outcome of the project or program. And make sure you allow your participants to take their books home!
How do I know if I've been approved?
Applications for the 2025 grant cycle opened on May 1, 2025 and will close on September 1,2025. The JASNA New York Metro Book Box Committee reviews applications on a rolling basis. If your application is approved, you will receive a favorable chance that will allow you to place an order through Jane Austen Books. The cost of the books will be removed in the checkout process.

UK-based artist and environmentalist Sophie Green paints remarkable stories of wildlife. Green is famous for her very realistic animal paintings. Her style is almost like a photograph and shows the vulnerability (脆弱) of nature. The artist pictures the beauty, and brightness of animals such as chimpanzees (黑猩猩), penguins, and many other species at risk of extinction.
“This is not a celebration of nature,” says Green of her most recent collection, Commodities. “This collection is wildlife lacking of both ‘wild’ and ‘life’. It is a big fire, shining a light on the strange and entitled way that humans have forever used nature and wildlife for our own benefit. Hunting, racing, fighting, breeding, eating, wearing, training. The greed is never-ending.”
In one painting from the collection, Temperance, a large chimpanzee sits on a black pedestal (基座). With its left hand reaching across its chest, holding tightly onto the muscle in the upper right arm, the animal fearlessly addresses the viewer. Green painted the chimpanzee’s wrinkles and shiny eyes, which makes people think about the connection between humans and nature.
Commodities connects people with different animals through the angle of conservation, as the artist beautifully pictures the reality of life in the wild. Each brushstroke of the chimpanzee is intentional, as Green aims to capture the sensational characteristics of animals.
Green dedicates herself to the well-being and long life of nature’s ecological landscape, challenging others to do the same. In Temperance and the paintings of Commodities, Green guides viewers to address the strained relationship humans have with the natural world.
Her devotion to nature doesn’t stop with her artistic achievements. She focuses on the combination of art and charity, as 10% of her profits pour into wildlife and conservation charities. Green also pursues other avenues of activism, such as her online commerce site Art Basket, cooperation with the Jane Goodall Institute UK, and the IFAW International Youth Art Contest. Her work serves as a reminder of the beauty and vulnerability of the world we live in.
4. What does Sophie Green’s painting style emphasize?
A. The beauty of abstract art. B. The vivid details of animals.
C. The colorful landscapes of nature. D. The historical context of wildlife.
5. What is the main message of Green’s collection, Commodities?
A. Advocating sustainable living.
B. Celebrating the beauty of wildlife.
C. Praising wildlife conservation efforts.
D. Revealing human exploitation of nature.
6. How does Green’s painting Temperance make viewers feel?
A. Surprised by the animal’s size. B. Amused by the animal’s actions.
C. Inspired to rethink man and nature. D. Curious about the artist’s technique.
7. How does Green connect art with environmental action?
A. By teaching art classes. B. By organizing art exhibitions.
C. By writing articles on conservation. D. By donating a share of her profits.
B 5. D 6. C 7. D

We tie our shoes. We put on neckties. Yet despite deep familiarity with knots (绳结), most people cannot tell a weak knot from a strong one by looking at them, new Johns Hopkins University research finds. Researchers showed people pictures of two knots and asked them to point to the strongest one. They couldn’t. They showed people videos of each knot, where the knots spin slowly so they could get a good long look. They still failed. People couldn’t even manage it when researchers showed them each knot next to a diagram of the knots’ configuration.
“People are terrible at this,” said co-author Chaz Firestone. “Humanity has been using knots for thousands of years. They’re not that complicated — they’re just some threads wound up. Yet you can show people real pictures of knots and ask them for any judgement about how the knot will behave and they have no clue.” The study published in the journal Open Mind reveals a new blind spot in our physical reasoning.
The experiment is the brainchild of a PhD student in Firestone’s lab, Sholei Croom, who happens to be a crazy embroiderer Croom was working on a project. Faced with the fine and fearsome ball of embroidery thread, he was unable to make heads or tails of it, even though it was his interest. Croom, who studies intuitive (直觉) physics, or what people understand about the environment just from looking at it, suspected knots might be a rare weakness.
“People make predictions all the time about how the physics of the world will play out but something about knots didn’t feel intuitive to me,” Croom said. “You don’t need to touch a pile of books to judge its stability. You don’t have to feel a bowling ball to guess how many bottles it will knock over. But knots seem to strain our judgement mechanisms in interesting ways.” It is likely that there are still many open questions in our ability to reason about the environment.
8. Which is closest in meaning to the underlined word “configuration” in paragraph 1?
A. Construction. B. Collection. C. Extension. D. Operation.
9. What is the main reason for people struggling to judge a knot’s strength?
A. Lack of visual clarity. B. Complexity of knot structures.
C. Restricted exposure to knots. D. Limited physical reasoning ability.
10. Why does the author mention “a pile of books” and “a bowling ball” in the last paragraph?
A. To explain knot mechanisms. B. To compare different physical tasks.
C. To criticize human capacity. D. To highlight problems in intuitive judgement.
11. What does the study suggest about human physical reasoning?
A. It is highly reliable in all situations. B. It needs ongoing exploration.
C. It depends on direct physical contact. D. It can be changed with frequent practice.
A 9. D 10. D 11. B

根据第一段“Yet despite deep familiarity with knots (绳结), most people cannot tell a weak knot from a strong one by looking at them, new Johns Hopkins University research finds. 故选A项。
根据第二段““Humanity has been using knots for thousands of years. They’re not that complicated — they’re just some threads wound up. Yet you can show people real pictures of knots and ask them for any judgement about how the knot will behave and they have no clue.” The study published in the journal Open Mind reveals a new blind spot in our physical reasoning.(“人类使用结已有数千年的历史。它们并没有那么复杂——它们只是一些缠绕的线。然而,你可以向人们展示结的真实图片,并要求他们对结的行为做出任何判断,但他们却一无所知。”发表在《开放思维》杂志上的这项研究揭示了我们在物理推理方面的一个新盲点)”可知,人们难以判断绳结强弱的主要原因是有限的物理推理能力。故选D项。
【10题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段““People make predictions all the time about how the physics of the world will play out but something about knots didn’t feel intuitive to me,” Croom said. “You don’t need to touch a pile of books to judge its stability. You don’t have to feel a bowling ball to guess how many bottles it will knock over. But knots seem to strain our judgement mechanisms in interesting ways.”
根据最后一段“It is likely that there are still many open questions in our ability to reason about the environment. (很可能在我们对环境进行推理的能力方面仍然存在许多未解决的问题)”可知,这项研究表明人类的物理推理能力需要不断探索。故选B项。

Get your kid the toy they want for the holidays this year — four in five parents confirmed that their child is happier, more social and confident in themselves when they play with their favorite toy or doll. A survey of 2,000 U. S. parents of school-aged kids found that 63% believe if their kid plays with toys or dolls early in life, they’ll have an easier time fostering new friendships later in life.
Interestingly, 60% of parents agreed that the pressure to be “grown up” or achieve success negatively impacts their child’s self-confidence. Confidence is not defined through success, but rather through a sense of self and forming strong friendships. And 52% said their child believes their favorite color matches their personality.
The study also looked into what parents want their kids to learn or discover while playing with their toys and dolls. The most important was that kids learn “how to socialize” (50%). That was followed by problem-solving (43%), finding personal interests (41%) and communicating with peers (40%).
Interestingly, less than a third of parents named academic skills as a key learning, showing a stronger interest in instilling (灌输) social and emotional values. “For kids, the holidays are all about play, and are a crucial time for their self-growth,” said Dr. Sheryl Ziegler, a clinical psychologist. “The ability to play with and change colors helps kids navigate their world and sense of self. Using rainbow-colored gifts can boost children’s confidence and social skills.”
The study also found how on-screen characters have an impact on what toys and dolls kids will play with. Nearly half (46%) of parents say their child often or always plays with toys or dolls based on characters from TV shows. And most (91%) noted that their kids recreate what they see on TV with their toys or dolls.
When asked what they’d like their children to take away from what they watch on TV, 49% of parents named problem-solving as the number one takeaway. Other important takeaways included discovering their personal interests and building confidence.
12. Why do most parents believe toys benefit children?
A. They help enhance social skills.
B. They help develop artistic talents.
C. They help increase physical strength.
D. They help improve academic performance.
13. Which of the following statements will Dr. Sheryl Ziegler probably agree with?
A. Academic skills are the most important outcome of play.
B. Screen time is more beneficial than traditional toys.
C. Kids should be allowed to play freely on holidays.
D. Children should avoid playing with colorful toys.
14. How do on-screen characters influence children’s play according to the study?
A. They raise cooperative awareness. B. They add the inspiration for their play.
C. They make playtime increase. D. They encourage play on screen.
15. What’s the best title for the text?
A. What Factors Affect Kids’ Confidence B. How Toys Help Kids Find True Friends
C. How Toys Influence Kids’ Development D. What Toys Kids Like Most During Holidays
A 13. C 14. B 15. C

根据第三段“The study also looked into what parents want their kids to learn or discover while playing with their toys and dolls. The most important was that kids learn “how to socialize” (50%). That was followed by problem-solving (43%), finding personal interests (41%) and communicating with peers (40%). (这项研究还调查了父母希望他们的孩子在玩玩具和玩偶时能学到或发现什么。最重要的是孩子们学会“如何社交”(占50%)。其次是解决问题(占43%)、发现个人兴趣(占41%)和与同龄人交流(占40%))”可知,大多数父母认为玩具对孩子有益是因为它们有助于提高社交技能。故选A项。
根据第四段““For kids, the holidays are all about play, and are a crucial time for their self-growth,” said Dr. Sheryl Ziegler, a clinical psychologist. “The ability to play with and change colors helps kids navigate their world and sense of self. Using rainbow-colored gifts can boost children’s confidence and social skills.”
根据第五段“The study also found how on-screen characters have an impact on what toys and dolls kids will play with. Nearly half (46%) of parents say their child often or always plays with toys or dolls based on characters from TV shows. And most (91%) noted that their kids recreate what they see on TV with their toys or dolls.
通读全文,尤其是第一段“Get your kid the toy they want for the holidays this year — four in five parents confirmed that their child is happier, more social and confident in themselves when they play with their favorite toy or doll. (今年假期给你的孩子买他们想要的玩具——五分之四的父母证实,当他们的孩子玩他们最喜欢的玩具或玩偶时,他们会更快乐、更善于社交,也更自信)”以及第三段“The study also looked into what parents want their kids to learn or discover while playing with their toys and dolls. (这项研究还调查了父母希望他们的孩子在玩玩具和玩偶时能学到或发现什么)”可知,本文主要介绍了玩具对孩子发展的影响,所以“玩具如何影响孩子的发展”作为文章标题最为合适。故选C项。

Ms. Carter’s art class was usually quiet, but that morning, the atmosphere was different. Fifteen-year-old Jamie suddenly slammed his sketchbook (速写本) shut. “You don’t get it!” he shouted, his voice shaking with frustration, before running out of the classroom. The other students were extremely shocked. Jamie, once cheerful and enthusiastic, had been skipping homework for weeks. His drawings were now filled only with black charcoal (炭笔).
Ms. Carter felt worried. She remembered Principal Lee’s words: Jamie’s father, a wealthy supporter of the school, wanted her fired because of Jamie’s poor grades. But Ms. Carter sensed there was more to the story. She thought, “There must be something wrong. I need to find out what’s really going on.”
That afternoon, Jamie’s father stormed into Principal Lee’s office. “Fire her,” he demanded, throwing Jamie’s report card onto the desk. “My son’s grades are slipping, and it’s all her fault.” Principal Lee, however, felt there was more to the story and decided to investigate further.
Meanwhile, Ms. Carter talked to the homeroom teacher, Mr. Wu. “Jamie only draws in black now,” she said, her voice filled with concern. “Something’s wrong.” Mr. Wu nodded and agreed to keep an eye on Jamie.
Without them knowing, Jamie was hiding in a storage room, holding a note with words written in charcoal. The words “Mom left” were hard to read, but they made Jamie feel very sad and heavy inside. He felt alone and misunderstood.
Principal Lee reviewed the school’s security footage (监控录像) and saw Jamie slipping into the art room every night. He also visited Jamie’s house and found divorce (离婚) papers on the kitchen table. Jamie’s father admitted he hadn’t told Jamie about the divorce yet.
Principal Lee called Jamie’s father into his office. “Your son isn’t lazy. He’s heartbroken,” he said gently. Jamie’s father was surprised but willing to listen. Principal Lee showed him the footage of Jamie’s late-night art sessions. “Maybe it’s time we gave him a chance to heal,” he suggested.

Paragraph 1:
Ms. Carter started an after-school painting project and asked Jamie to lead. At first, Jamie hesitated. He thought he wasn’t good enough and no one would listen to him. But when he saw Ms. Carter’s encouraging eyes, he took a deep breath and said, “Okay, I’ll try.” During the project, Jamie found that he could express his feelings through painting. He told the other students about his sadness when his mom left, which was something he had kept to himself for a long time. The students listened quietly and offered him comfort. Jamie felt that he wasn’t alone anymore.
Paragraph 2:
One month later, at a painting show, Jamie’s artwork was shining with blue waves and golden sunrises. People who saw the paintings were amazed. One of them said, “The colors are so vivid, and I can feel the hope in them.” Jamie stood beside his paintings, a big smile on his face. His father, who had also come to the show, was surprised to see the change in his son. He walked up to Jamie and said, “I’m proud of you, son.” Ms. Carter and the other students were also very happy for Jamie. They knew that he had finally found a way to heal himself.

Schools, libraries, after-school programs, and other youth-focused community groups in the New York City. Book Boxes are not available for individuals or for-profit organizations, and they are not intended for resale. What happens after you finish your unit on Jane Austen?
When you have completed your unit, the person who receives the Book Box must submit a report on the outcome of the project or program. And make sure you allow your participants to take their books home!

He’s heartbroken” he said gently. Jamie’s father was surprised but willing to listen. Principal Lee showed him the footage of Jamie’s late-night art sessions. “Maybe it’s time we gave him a chance to heal,” he suggested.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
Ms. Carter started an after-school painting project and asked Jamie to lead.
