It’s difficult to be a star athlete, especially when you don’t even have arms. But Tim Bannon, 14, a student at Proviso West High School in Chicago, US, is trying his best.
Bannon has gotten popular online thanks to a workout video that shows him overcoming his disability while exercising. He is set to take part in the Chicago Triathlon soon. He plans to run about 2 km, swim 200 meters and bike 7 km during the race.
He knows the physical difficulties of the triathlon. What if he falls and isn’t able to get up? Keri Serota, the co-founder of a community charity group, said Bannon was very able to complete the event. He uses a special three-wheeled bike and gets buoyancy (浮力) while swimming by using a “dead man’s float”.
“By kicking his legs and then moving his body from his shoulders to his hips, he’s able to roll and then roll back down flat onto his stomach and move himself forward,” Serota said.
Besides the triathlon, Bannon also plans to try out for the Panthers football team as a kicker. Many people doubt he’ll be able to do it, but he wants to try anyway. “I’m not worried. I don’t care if I get kicked. I want to be a kicker because I’m crazy about football,” he said.
For Bannon, it’s a simple goal: Just live normally and be like one of the guys.

Lunch or breakfast?
Which do you like better: breakfast or lunch? Well, with brunch you don’t have to choose! Brunch gets its name from the first two letters of breakfast (br-) and the last four letters of lunch (-unch).
Rich British people are believed to have invented brunch which dates back to the late nineteenth century. They liked to go hunting. Between their hunting sessions (环节), they would stop to enjoy a mid-morning meal that included meat, eggs and many other things.
Today, it is a meal eaten around late morning to early afternoon (often between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.), usually on weekends because people prefer to get up late after a week’s hard work. It might seem like a simple meal, but sometimes it raises breakfast to an artistic level. For example, ordinary pancakes might be changed to blueberry pancakes.
Brunch has been very popular among Americans. In Melbourne, Australia, brunch culture is also being welcomed. I decided to try it with my friend. We visited a cafe that is famous for its flower theme. There was a wall full of various types of fresh and colorful flowers.
This theme is also shown in its food and drinks. The pink rose tea latte (拿铁) had real rose petals (花瓣) on top. It tasted as sweet as it looked. For the main course (主菜), I chose the soft-shell crab (螃蟹). The crab was placed in a bread bowl with some fried crab claws (爪) on the top.
The brunch greatly satisfied my appetite (食欲). Though I was full after having such a big meal, I still wanted to have another one.
11. Brunch gets its name from the letters of ______.
A. breakfast and lunch B. lunch and teatime C. teatime and dinner D. lunch and dinner
12. What’s the main idea of paragraph 2?
A. The history of brunch. B. The importance of brunch.
C. The popularity of brunch. D. The food of brunch.
13. What do we learn about brunch according to paragraphs 3 and 4?
A. It’s usually eaten after 2 p.m. B. It’s usually eaten on weekends.
C. It’s popular all over the world. D. It’s the simplest meal in a day.
14. Which of the following is NOT true about the cafe in Melbourne?
A. It is famous for the flower theme. B. It can show its theme in its food and drinks.
C. It serves expensive but terrible food. D. You can find a flower wall in the cafe.
15. What can we learn from the text?
A. Brunch is always eaten at home. B. Having brunch is a way to save time.
C. Brunch is only popular in the UK and the USA. D. It’s believed that British people invented brunch.
D
If you’ve ever stayed up late and then gotten up early the next day, you know what it’s like not to get enough sleep. It’s a very uncomfortable feeling. In fact, scientists have long believed that sleep is like food—if we don’t get enough of it, we might get sick or even die. But now they are starting to wonder just how much sleep we need.
Researchers at Imperial College London recently did a study on fruit flies (果蝇). They found that flies that slept for very short periods of time—about 72 minutes a day—still lived about as long as flies that slept for normal amounts of time, according to Live Science. One of the female flies slept for just 4 minutes each day on average. This has led the researchers to wonder if sleep is less necessary than we previously (以前地) thought.
Humans are very different from fruit flies. According to the Sleep Foundation, sleep is a time when our bodies perform a lot of maintenance (维护), such as repairing tissue (组织) and growing muscle. Sleeping allows our bodies to recover from the stress we experience each day.
But can we really die from not sleeping? No humans have died so far from staying awake for too long. The world record for sleeplessness is held by Randy Gardner from the US, who stayed awake for 11 days and 25 minutes in 1964. However, Gardner did experience serious side effects (副作用), such as hallucinations, moodiness and memory loss.
Scientists have not yet found any animals that don’t sleep at all. Even animals that only sleep for short periods are not completely sleepless. This suggests that a minimum (最小的) amount of sleep is necessary, even in short-sleeping animals, according to German scientist Niels Rattenborg.
16. What did the study on fruit flies show?
A. Fruit flies need at least 72 minutes of sleep every day.
B. Sleep is as necessary for animals as it is for humans.
C. Female flies sleep less than male flies.
D. Getting less sleep doesn’t seem to affect the flies’ life.
17. What’s the main idea of paragraph 3?
A. The different ways of sleep. B. The advantages of sleep to humans.
C. The importance of sleep to fruit flies. D. The differences between fruit flies and humans.
18. Randy Gardner is a person who ________.
A. comes from the UK B. slept for 11 days and 25 minutes in 1964
C. felt well although he stayed awake for too long D. is the world record holder for sleeplessness
19. What does the underlined word “This” refer to in the last paragraph?
A. Animals don’t sleep at all.
B. Sleeplessness can lead to death.
C. Humans need more sleep than animals.
D Even animals that only sleep for short periods are not completely sleepless.
20 What’s the best title for the text?
A. The Danger of Sleeplessness
B. A Study on Fruit Flies
C. How Much Sleep Do We Need?
D. What are the Differences between Humans and Animals?

First, I’ll manage my time wisely. I plan to create a daily schedule balancing study and relaxation. Mornings will be for reviewing weak subjects, while afternoons are for hobbies like reading and painting. Evenings will be family time or outdoor activities. Second, I’ll organize my study materials. I’ll donate useful textbooks to younger students and recycle old notebooks. Important notes will be kept neatly for future reference. Additionally, I want to learn new skills, such as basic cooking and photography. I’ll also volunteer at the local library to get experience.
This summer will be both interesting and meaningful. I hope everyone enjoys their vacation too!
