You may feel that math is difficult and boring. Is it possible that you’ve been looking at math in the wrong way? Li Xing, a math professor (教授) at Ningxia University, thinks math can be beautiful and fun. I completely agree with what he said.
Numbers are beautiful
There is math hidden in beautiful human bodies. Measure (测量) the length from your head to your belly button (肚脐) and from your belly button to your feet. The percentage of these two numbers is always around 0.618. This is the golden ratio (黄金比例), which can be seen everywhere, like in nature, music and paintings.
In Chinese poems, we can also see the beauty of numbers. As Li Bai wrote, “My boat has left ten thousand mountains far away”, “A thousand miles in one day”, — all these numbers show how fast Li Bai traveled and how happy he felt.
Curves are beautiful
“Sine curves (正弦曲线)” are beautiful. They go towards the two opposite directions on and on without ever ending. When you look at them, you may feel like standing by the sea and watching the waves slowly moving.
Formulas (公式) are beautiful
There are some amazing formulas. In a right-angled triangle (直角三角形), the square of the longest side is the total of the squares of the other two sides. How amazing! Just as Chinese-American mathematician Shiing Shen Chern said, “Math is fun!”
3. Where can we find the golden ratio according to Paragraph 2?

A study shows that 2024 was the hottest year since 1961. The average temperature in the country reached 10.92℃ last year which is 1.03℃ higher than the usual average, according to official records.
Global warming (全球变暖) is the main reason for China’s higher-than-normal temperatures. It has caused rising sea levels and more extreme (极端的) weather, including longer heat waves and fewer cold days.
A 1℃ rise in temperature has a strong influence on nature. Sea levels may rise by 2.3 meters over time, which brings danger to coastal areas. Warmer temperatures also harm wild crops and bring more pests (害虫). Some animals and plants may die out because they cannot be used to it quickly enough. Studies suggest that a 1.58℃ rise could lead to the loss of over 10% of species (物种). Higher temperatures may temporarily increase crop production (农作物产量) in some places. However, in the long term, farming will face bigger changes and production may be expected to drop. Illnesses related to heat are becoming more common. Longer heat waves lead to more deaths, showing the need for better healthcare and ways to prevent harm.
The year 2025 seems to continue with higher-than-normal temperatures. On New Year’s Day, temperatures in areas south of the Yangtze River were over 15℃,far from the cold usually expected in winter.
To deal with these problems, experts suggest developing technology to predict extreme weather, like heat waves, to reduce risks and improve preparedness.
7. How does the writer introduce the topic?
A. By comparing numbers.
B. By telling a personal story.
C. By sharing experts’ opinion.
8. Why might some animals and plants die out?
A. They need more heat than they get.
B. Humans don’t protect them anymore.
C. They can’t get used to the heat quickly.
9. What does the underlined word “temporarily” mean in Paragraph 3?
A. for all time B. for a short time C. without stopping
10. Why do experts suggest developing prediction technology for extreme weather?
A. To make heat waves longer.
B. To protect wild crops from pests.
C. To lower risks and be better prepared.

Robots Dance Yangko at 2025 CCTV Spring Festival Gala
On January 28, 2025, a special performance called YangBOT amazed the audience at the CCTV Spring Festival Gala, China’s most-watched TV show. Directed by the famous filmmaker Zhang Yimou, the show mixed traditional Chinese yangko dance with modern robot technology.
In the performance, humanoid robots (robots shaped like humans) dressed in colorful costumes (服装) danced yangko, a joyful folk dance from northern China often seen during festivals. They spun handkerchiefs (转手绢) quickly and formed creative group patterns (模式). These robots were developed by Unitree, a Chinese robotics company. This was not Unitree’s first success—in 2021, their CCTV Spring Festival Gala robot cows named “Ben Ben” danced with the singer Andy Lau.
The robots learned dance moves through AI and used laser navigation (激光导航) to move safely on the stage. Their strong joints (关节) (like knees with 360 N·m power) helped them balance perfectly during fast steps. Zhang Yimou explained, “This dance isn’t just fun—it shows how technology can bring new life to traditions.”
Thanks to these innovations (创新), the robots won the hearts of millions. On social media, topics like “Robot Yangko” spread quickly. Young viewers called it “cool”, while older audiences loved its humor and festive spirit.
The YangBOT program is a perfect mix of China’s tech progress and cultural pride. As one fan said, “It’s like watching the future and past dance together!”
35. Who directed the YangBOT performance?
36. What were the humanoid robots like?
37. How did the robots learn their dance moves?
38. What two things does the YangBOT program mix?
39. If you were to design a robot for a cultural performance, what traditional part would you include? Why?
