From fashionable current affairs reports to the distant past, these podcasts (播客) take the mystery out of history.
The Rest Is History
Two men quietly fill your brain with knowledge in an entertaining way. Tackling everything from the history of the World Cup to significant historical events, the two combine total command of their subjects with much enjoyable silliness and some terrible impressions.
Slow Burn
Slow Burn takes deep dives into modern American history. Created by Slate, episodes (集) are hosted by various presenters, and are typically attractive from beginning to end. Often, these are moments in history you’ve already known about, but might never learned about in this much detail before. These seriously in-depth explainers will keep you addicted to an entire learning trip.
In Our Time
Running weekly from 1998, the popular show hosted by Melvyn Bragg is more than just a history program. With over 1,000 episodes available to download, it covers many straightforward history topics. However, In Our Time mainly explores the big ideas and philosophical concepts that have shaped humanity.
A History of the World in 100 Objects
The excellent bite-size journey through the history of the world initially aired in 2010 and probably wasn’t called a podcast, but it lives on in that form. Narrated by an art historian, it does exactly what the title suggests, serving as a loosely chronological guide to human civilization through the artifacts we have created, from primitive tools to world-famous pieces of art.
21. How does Slow Burn differ from other podcasts?
A. It covers unknown American history.
B. It is available for download.

Before Pete Adler joined the Army, he majored in architecture. Now, after spending 25years in equipment maintenance and supply, and another 17 years as a civilian employee, Adler is back to his architectural roots. And it’s for a good cause: building free ramps (坡道) for his senior and disabled neighbors.
Adler began helping his neighbors after the nonprofit project: HOMES gave a presentation at his local Rotary Club. Adler recalls the representative saying — “Too many seniors and disabled individuals need ramps, but they can’t afford them.” That’s when Adler reached out to his friends so that they could start building ramps for neighbors in need.
“I feel this is my calling, and I’d like to start a crew,” he told his friend Karen Scott, who was eager to jump in and help.
Adler’s group of volunteers has only grown with time. Now when he pulls up to a house for an installation, he has about a dozen people by his side to transport lumber (木材), work the saws, and assemble the deck.
“It’s turned into an amazing service,” said Adler. “I really enjoy the process and the teamwork, and figuring out the best solution for people in need.”
When a recipient (接收者) can afford it, they are only charged with the cost of the materials. If they can’t cover the cost, project: HOMES steps in to pay the full price.
Adler and his team of volunteers have transformed lives by building over 500 accessibility ramps for households in need. Adler has gone from building one ramp per weekend to completing three, sometimes four ramps each week across the Tri-Cities area.
71-year-old Jaunita Barnes is one of the 500 neighbors that Adler has helped through project: HOMES. After a stroke and heart attack, Barnes found it difficult to navigate the stairs with her walker. She was confined to her home for months — getting groceries delivered and calling doctors to her door — until Adler and his team stepped in to help.
“Now I can go where I need to go,” said Barnes. “Adler and the others are truly nice.”
24. Why did Adler return to architecture-related work?
A. To take on a social responsibility. B. To continue his abandoned business.
C. To earn fame from architecture. D. To make up for his neighbors.
25. What motivated Adler to initiate the ramp-building project?
A. The Rotary Club’s nonprofit project. B. A personal interest in ramp design.
C. A request from his disabled neighbors. D. The struggles the disadvantaged faced.
26. What does the growth of Adler’s volunteer group suggest about the project?
A. It has gained recognition and support. B. It proves Adler’s profit has increased.
C. It provides opportunity for volunteers. D. It requires professional construction skills.
27. How does Barnes probably feel about the ramps?
A. Useful and cheap. B. Helpful and worthy.
C. Unique and valuable. D. Costly and complicated.

Columbia scientists have found specialized neurons (神经元) in the brains of mice that order the animals to stop eating. Though many feeding circuits (回路) in the brain are known to play a role in monitoring food intake, the neurons in those circuits do not make the final decision to cease eating a meal.
How does the brain know when the body has had enough and how does it act on that information to stop eating? Alexander Nectow, a physician-scientist at Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons and his team member, Srikanta Chowdhury, used new single-cell techniques that make it possible to peer into a region of the brain and discern different types of cells that until now have been difficult to distinguish from one another.
During their profiling of a brainstem (脑干) region known for processing complex signals, the researchers spotted previously unrecognized cells that had similar characteristics to other neurons involved in regulating appetite. To see how the neurons influenced eating, the researchers engineered the neurons so they could be turned on and off by the researchers with light.
When the neurons were activated by the light, the mice ate much smaller meals. The intensity of the activation determined how quickly animals stopped eating. “Interestingly, these neurons don’t just signal an immediate stop; they help the mice to slow down their eating gradually,” said Chowdhury.
The researchers also looked at how other eating circuits and hormones affected the neurons. The researchers found that the neurons were silenced by a hormone that increases appetite and activated by a GLP-1 agonist, a class of drugs now popular for treating obesity and diabetes. These experiments found that these inputs helped the neurons track each bite the mice took.
“Essentially, these neurons can smell food, see food, feel food in the mouth and in the gut (肠道), and interpret all the gut hormones that are released in response to eating,” said Nectow. “And ultimately, they leverage all of this information to decide when enough is enough.”
28. What is the main function of the specialized neurons found in mice’s brains?
A. Helping mice digest. B. Making mice feel full.
C. Choosing what mice eat. D. Monitoring mice’s energy intake.
29. What does the underlined word “discern” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Illustrate. B. Combine. C. Recognize. D. Analyze.
30. How did researchers know the effect of the new neurons on eating behavior?
A. By observing the mice’s eating habits.
B. By comparing the mice’s weight changes.
C. By engineering the neurons in the mice’s bodies.
D. By controlling the light connected to the neurons.
31. Which can be the best title for the text?

A new study has revealed the alarming extent glaciers have shrunk (缩小) over the past 40 years in a global warming hot spot for the first time, and the biggest retreat (退缩) has occurred in recent years.
The research, led by the University of Bristol, shows the vast majority of glaciers across Svalbard in the Arctic have been significantly shrinking. Findings revealed an area loss of more than 800 km² at the glacier boundaries in this Norwegian group of islands since 1985.The study also found that more than half of the glaciers go through seasonal cycles in glacier calving (崩解) when large blocks of ice break away due to higher ocean and air temperatures.
Co-author Jonathan Bamber, Professor of Glaciology at the University of Bristol, said, “Glacier calving is a poorly modelled and understood process that plays a crucial role in the health of a glacier. Our study provides valuable insights into what controls calving and how it responds to climate forcing in an area at the frontline of global warming.”
Lead author Dr Li, Senior Research Associate at the University’s Glaciology Centre, said, “The scale of glacier retreats over the past few decades is astonishing, almost covering the entire Svalbard. This highlights the weakness of glaciers to climate change, especially in Svalbard, a region experiencing rapid warming up to seven times faster than the global average.”
Using a novel AI model, the research team analysed millions of satellite images capturing the end positions of glaciers across the entire Svalbard. The findings provide an unprecedented level of detail into the scale and nature of glacier loss in this region. The biggest peak in glacier retreats was detected in 2016, when the calving rates were double the average between 2010 and 2015, in response to extreme warming events.
“This was likely caused by a large-scale weather pattern called atmospheric blocking that can influence atmospheric pressures,” said Dr Li. “With the increasing frequency of atmospheric blocking and ongoing regional warming, future retreats of glaciers are expected to accelerate, resulting in greater glacier mass loss. This would change the ocean circulation and marine life environments in the Arctic.”
32. What is the author’s intention of writing paragraph 1?
A. To discuss the retreat of the glacier. B. To present the author’s opinion.
C. To explain the effect of hot spots. D. To introduce the study’s main findings.
33. What is scientists’ current understanding of glacier calving?
A. Precise. B. Extensive. C. Limited. D. Comprehensive.
34. What does Dr Li’s statement imply about the glaciers?
A. They will calve at a top speed.
B. They may experience faster retreats.
C. They will remain a fixed rate of retreats.
D. They may decrease because of little snow.
35. What is the text?
A. A research paper on glacier calving mechanics.
B. A news report on glacier retreat in Svalbard.
C. A summary of a climate change conference.
D. An article about the history of glaciology.

David has always been passionate about cycling. He loves the feeling of the wind rushing against his face, the freedom of exploring new places, and the sense of connection with nature that cycling brings. For him, cycling is not only a hobby, but also a way of life. He would often spend his weekends riding through the countryside, breathing in the fresh air and enjoying the beautiful scenery. He would plan detailed routes, sometimes covering dozens of miles in a single day.
Two years ago, on his 18th birthday, David's father gave him a brand-new bike. That morning, David woke up to find a large, beautifully wrapped box in the living room. As he opened it, his eyes widened with excitement at the sight of the shiny bike. It was exactly the model he had been dreaming of. His father stood beside him, smiling proudly. David threw his arms around his father, filled with overwhelming joy and gratitude. He immediately took the bike out for a spin, feeling like the happiest person in the world.
Unfortunately, last year, David's father passed away due to illness. This was a distressing blow to David. However, the bike his father gave him became a precious source of comfort. Every time he rode it, he felt as if his father was right beside him.
Today, David decided to go shopping. He rode his beloved bike to the mall, parked it outside, and went inside. But when he came out of the mall, to his horror, he found that his bike was gone. Panic and despair washed over him. This bike was not only a means of transportation, but also carried so many precious memories of his father.
Without hesitation, David called the police. Detective Presley was assigned to the case. After learning about the case, the detective said, “Don't worry, young man. We'll do our best to find your bike.”

【答案】参考范文:
Knowing the bike is important to David, Detective Presley made a kind decision. He used his own money to buy a brand-new bike for David. A few days later, David was surprised to receive a call from Detective Presley. David arrived at the station, feeling a mix of hope and anxiety. When he walked into the room, he saw Detective Presley standing next to a brandnew bike. It was the same model as the one he had lost, but it was brand new and gleaming.
David looked at the new bike, tears welling up in his eyes. Overwhelmed with emotion, he expressed his thanks to Detective Presley. Detective Presley simply replied that no words were needed. Detective Presley just told him to enjoy the ride. As David rode his new bike out of the police station, he felt a renewed sense of hope and gratitude. He knew his father’s love would always be with him. And now, he had a kind-hearted detective to thank for bringing joy back into his life.

C. It offers details of historic events.

25 What motivated Adler to initiate the ramp-building project?

A. New Techniques in Brain Cell Research
B. The Impact of Light on Controlling Eating
C. The Role of Hormones in Appetite Regulation
D. Brain Cells Which Tell You When to Stop Eating

A new study has revealed the alarming extent glaciers have shrunk (缩小) over the past 40 years in a global warming hot spot for the first time, and the biggest retreat (退缩) has occurred in recent years.
The research led by the University of Bristol, shows the vast majority of glaciers across Svalbard in the Arctic have been significantly shrinking.
A Precise. B. Extensive. C. Limited.
