think it’s easy to be a happy person. Here are three little things you can do:
Learn from mistakes (错误)
Everyone makes mistakes, so when we are not doing something right, it’s easy for us to be angry
(生气的). Don’t be angry! Just think about what we can learn from them. Learning from mistakes can
help us to be happy and better!
Let go bad feelings
When we do something not successfully (成功地), we can have bad feelings very easily (容易).
And this kind of bad feelings can be there and make us feel very sad. At that time, don’t stay in them
for too long, because sometimes happy life is letting bad feelings go. Let them go and just see more
good things in life.
Be thankful
Being a happy person usually needs us to have a thankful heart. We must say “thank you” to the
things and people around us. When someone gives us a real smile, we say “thank you”; when our
mother makes us a good dinner, we say “thank you”... It is important for us to stop and enjoy the little
things in life from time to time. Just be thankful and happiness is just coming!

great honor for the country. The players showed great teamwork and a hard-working spirit.
The whole nation cheered for the players and millions of people cried tears of joy. But few know
how hard they worked to be successful. Less than two hours before the games, three players couldn’t
join in the game because of illness, and many of team members kept on playing even after being
injured (受伤). “My leg hurt a lot, but I can stand it.” said Zhu Ting. The Chinese women’s volleyball
team has been the nation’s pride since it first stood on the top at the World Cup in 1981. In the

Singapore: Where Rules Rule
Singapore is a small island country and it’s famous for its strict (严格的) rules. Visitors are often
surprised to see many signs. They tell visitors what they mustn’t do. But these rules also mean that
Singapore is a very clean and safe place. Here are some of Singapore’s most famous rules.
Don’t Litter
Singapore tries hard to keep the country clean. Everyone must litter in a bin, not on the ground.
If someone litters, they might have to pay a fine (罚款).
Don’t Take Durians on Public Transport (公共交通)
Another interesting rule in Singapore is about a fruit called durian (榴莲). Durians have a very
strong smell, and many people don’t like them. Also, the smell can stay for a long time even when the
durian is gone. Because of this, people must not take durians on buses or trains.

law that said people mustn’t chew gum in 1992.
Cross the Road Safely
If you visit Singapore, be careful where you cross the road. Look for a pedestrian crossing (人行
横道)—a safe place to cross. If you cross the road in any other place, you will get a $50 fine.

In the mood for music
Music has a strong impact on how people feel. Different types of music can make us feel
different emotions. For example, when someone listens to happy music, they may feel joyful and full
of energy. This creates a great atmosphere for a party and helps people enjoy themselves. On the other

hand, slow or sad music can make people feel emotional. Film makers will often use this kind of
music during sad scenes in a film. So, music can really help create the right mood for the occasion.
Music can also motıvate us. Some people like to listen to fast-paced music, like rock or dance
music, when they want to feel excited. It’s a great way to stay motivated during exercise. In contrast,
soft classical music can help us feel focused. Many people listen to this kind of music when they need
to concentrate.
Music also helps people manage their emotions. Both upbeat and slow music can help people
feel more positive when they are stressed. A lively song can lift their spirits, while a gentle melody can
calm them.
Perhaps one of the most fun things about music is that it brings people together. Not only can it
be enjoyed alone, but also shared with others during events. Many people love going to large music

Passage15
The Origin of the Marathon
The marathon is a well-known and highly respected event in modern Olympics. However, its
origin dates back to an ancient Greek battle during the Persian Wars.
In the 5th century BC, the Persians invaded Greece and landed at Marathon, a small town
approximately 26 miles (about 42 kilometers) from Athens. The Greek army, led by Miltiades,
managed to defeat the Persian forces with significantly fewer soldiers. To quickly spread the news of
this historic victory to the people of Athens, a soldier named Phidippides (or sometimes referred to as
Pheidippides or Filippides in different sources) was chosen for the task due to his remarkable speed.
Phidippides ran from the battlefield at Marathon to the central square in Athens. The journey
was arduous, covering over 40 kilometers (some sources mention 26 miles, which is approximately
41.8 kilometers). Despite his exhaustion and injuries from the battle, Phidippides reached Athens and
announced, “Rejoice, we conquer!” (or similar variations like “Athens is saved!”) Soon after
delivering the message, Phidippides collapsed and died from exhaustion.
To honor Phidippides’ bravery and the Greek victory, the Greeks decided to include a race in the
first modern Olympic Games held in Athens in 1896. This race was named the “marathon” and its
distance was initially set to be around 40 kilometers, based on the legend of Phidippides’ journey.
However, the exact distance varied in early Olympics until it was officially standardized to 42
kilometers and 195 meters in 1920, after a remeasurement of the route from Marathon to Athens’
central square.
74.Where did the marathon originate from?
75.Who was Phidippides and what did he do?
76.When was the first modern marathon held?
77.Why is the marathon distance 42 kilometers and 195 meters?
