The barbecue! Why not cook on the barbecue? … There were still a few hours to go before the beginning of the new year, so we all sat around the dining room table and sang up until a few minutes before midnight. We couldn't watch the ball drop in Times Square on television but that wouldn't stop us from celebrating. I stood on a chair and, with the help of someone's watch to tell us the time, we all counted down and I dropped a tennis ball! We all screamed Happy New Year. We didn't need electricity for that!

Passage 1
James Warren, a frequent public bus rider in Denver, noticed a significant problem: many bus stops lacked seating. Particularly on a cold morning in January, Warren observed a woman waiting for a bus, with no seating available at the stop and no sidewalk, forcing her to sit in the dirt. Motivated by this sight, Warren took scrap (废料;废品) wood from construction waste bins and set out to construct a bench.
This singular act of kindness evolved into a larger mission when he realized that one bench was far from enough. In the Denver metro area alone, there are more than 9, 000 bus stops, many of which lack seating or shelter. To add a personal touch and spread a message of compassion, he carved “Be kind” into each bench, symbolizing the spirit of the project.
Warren’s initiative resonated with the community, especially among those who benefited daily from the benches. “I met some ladies the other day who talked about how they used the benches every day. It fills me up. It’s air in my tires.” Warren recalled. His enthusiasm increased as more people joined his bench-making efforts. “I’ve had a lot of people reach out to me on Twitter,” he mentioned. “Some people have wanted to come and help me.” Inspired by Warren’s work, others in the local news audience decided to contribute as well, with many donating supplies. “That puts me over the moon,” Warren expressed.
Nica Cave, a 26-year-old mobility advocate (改善交通运输系统的倡导者) from Denver, emphasized the wider impact of the initiative. “The absence of proper infrastructure, shelter, and seating at transit stops, such as bus stops and train stations, disadvantages those who rely on public transportation. People like Warren are encouraging, showing how individuals are willing to use their own time and resources to provide these much-needed services.”
Warren envisions extending his project beyond simply providing benches. He plans to create a bench-building workshop to foster community engagement and support. His ultimate goal is to enhance the quality of life in his community and inspire similar actions elsewhere, emphasizing that small acts of kindness and effort can load to significant improvements in daily experiences.

Passage 2
At 16 years old, Sam had always been a relatively good student. He put in an effort to get good grades and keep his parents happy. Neither of his parents had had the opportunity to attend university and for them, Sam becoming a lawyer was their biggest ambition. He knew that achieving this goal would make them happy, but the truth was that he wasn’t sure whether he would feel the same.
Since he was only a child, Sam had been passionate about computer programming. He taught himself how to use a computer, and by the age of 12 he had known three different programming languages. He did all of this in his spare time. He was quite an introvert (内向的人) , so he preferred staying in with his computer, rather than going out socialising or playing sports. His parents were fine with this, as long as he continued to focus on his studies.
One day, while reading an article online about a young technology billionaire called Thomas O’Connor, everything changed for Sam. In the article, the CEO said that his company was trying to create a new and improved way of paying for goods online but that they were having a problem with the security system. He said if they could overcome this, they could launch the biggest and best online payment system in the world. Sam realised he had an idea on how to solve this problem. Thinking that it wouldn’t come to anything, he emailed the CEO, introducing himself and explaining his idea.
He forgot all about it and got on with his life and studies, but then a month later, the most amazing thing happened. He got a response directly from the CEO. He told him he loved his idea and would like him to fly to America to meet with him. He said he knew Sam still needed to finish school, but that when he had, he would be happy to offer Sam a job in the company. Sam was overjoyed, but soon began to worry. Passage 3

About 15 years ago, Andrew McLindon, an entrepreneur and avid cyclist was riding his bike in Austin, Texas, when he thought about a friend’s 12-year-old son. The boy had never known the joy of biking because he suffered from hydrocephalus, a build-up of fluid in the brain that often causes balance disturbances.
When he got home, McLindon, now 60, went online and found a three-wheel recumbent bike with a seat belt, perfect for a child with balance issues. Soon the boy was pedaling around the street with his peers, having fun and getting exercise. But there was more, as McLindon got from his friend’s reaction. “To see his son interacting with other kids,” McLindon says. “I’ll never forget the smile on his face.”
That smile launched the McLindon Family Foundation. Funded by donations, the group works with pediatric rehab clinics (儿科康复诊所) to find children who can benefit from owning an adaptive bike and to help craft each bike to the particular needs of the child. A bike may include a headrest, a shoulder harmess, a seat belt, and a caregiver’s steering and brakes in the back. The bikes are expensive: $3,000 to $4,000, and that’s with the foundation’s steep manufacturer’s discount, For kids lucky enough to get one, they’re a life changer.
“We worked with a 14-year-old who has spina bifida (脊柱裂),” says McLindon. “She spent most days on the couch watching TV. Soon after she got her bike, she was training for special-needs triathlons. In a magazine interview, she said, ‘I always knew there was an athlete in me.’”
So far, the foundation has given away 450 bikes, and that’s just a start. “I do a lot of things. I run a lot of companies,” McLindon says. “But getting these kids their bikes is the most important thing that I do.”

Passage 4
At just 17, Lauren Schroeder has already made a significant impact on her community. Her voyage began at 14, volunteering at a food shelter. While packing boxes with canned goods for needy families, Lauren detected a substantial shortage: fresh vegetables. This observation sparked an idea that soon grew into a community-wide initiative.
Lauren pictured transforming part of her family’s 150-acre farm into a garden committed to growing produce for local families. Her proposal was met with a hint of concern from her mother, Katie Schroeder. While supportive, she also foresaw the extensive labor involved. Despite the agricultural background—her family typically planted soybeans and corn—vegetable cultivation was a novel pursuit. Nevertheless, Lauren was eager to tackle the nutritional deficiency she had uncovered.
The hard work began in earnest. Not discouraged by potential obstacles, Lauren dived into research to be a seasoned vegetable cultivator and secured a grant (拨款) from the National FFA Organization to cover initial costs. Subsequently, she spent two to three hours daily watering her crops by hand through the hot Iowa summers, sandwiching this commitment between softball practices. Furthermore, she carefully tended to her garden, combating weeds and harvesting crops, with green beans proving particularly challenging.
Eventually, with assistance from her younger brothers and sisters, Lauren’s half-acre garden produced 15 varieties of vegetables. In its first year, the garden generated 40 pounds of produce, benefiting food banks, nursing homes, and soup kitchens.
Motivated by the early achievements, Lauren doubled the garden’s size. To date, she has donated over 7,000 pounds of produce, valued at approximately $15,000, commanding community respect. Her work has found a deep echo among others, notably a mother from a local shelter who was grateful for the fresh food that reminded her children of home.
Lauren’s inspiration is straightforward yet deep-seated. “I wanted to have something that would impact people,” she told KWQC. Her actions demonstrate her belief in the power of community and the joy obtained from helping others—a feeling that will undoubtedly shape her future initiatives.

Passage 5
I am a Grade 11 student, and all my peers are obsessed with the future. 9 out of 10 conversations with my friends are about universities, dream jobs, or what we want to pursue after high school. My laptop is already plastered with stickers from universities I don’t know if I’ll even apply to yet, and my diary is filled with more notes about grades for admissions than personal thoughts. My best friend and I have already planned the fantasy apartment that we’ll rent together if we get into the same university.
However, I recently found that keeping my mind on the future is preventing me from living in the present. I selected courses I had absolutely no interest in just to boost my average. I found myself doing schoolwork with the intention of getting good grades for university admissions. At one time, I had thought of high school as nothing more than a highway to transport me from childhood to adulthood. I felt that way until last month when I attended my school’s semi-formal dance
As I danced with 200 sweaty teenagers in the venue, I felt a feeling I hadn’t felt for a long time: I was present, and we were all present. I wasn’t worried about my future because that wasn’t relevant at that moment. All that mattered was that we were young. We all lost ourselves in teenage bliss (幸福) on the dance floor without a single thought of our futures in our heads. What a wonderful feeling adolescence is.
That night changed everything. I understand now that high school is more than just a pathway to adulthood. High school is a rightful destination of its own. Ever since I’ve been trying to spend every second of my life living in the moment. Every time I catch myself going down the mental rabbit hole of the future, I take a step back and recenter myself. Instead of thinking years into my career, I try to think just one day at a time. Since my semi-formal, I’ve lived my life as an adolescent, not an adult-to-be.
1.Why did the author select courses he disliked?(no more than 5 words)

Passage 6
When I think of the hardest moments of my life, ironically many have turned out to be blessings. The most severe one was being pretty much kicked out of my. PhD program at the University of Georgia in 2016.
The program in Georgia turned out not to be the right fit for me despite my best efforts. The whole year was riddled with exhaustion, insecurity, fear, and exclusion. I was in therapy myself for most of the year to cope, and the only thing that made it tolerable was a lot of support from my family and friends.
I was utterly devastated when I went back home; it felt like my career was over. Fast forward to today, however, and I can see that getting driven out of the Georgia program was one of the best things that ever happened to me. In 2017, when I transferred to a doctoral program in San Diego, I began to thrive and now my business is doing exceptionally well. I am deeply grateful I studied in San Diego and happy that I didn’t stay in Georgia. It was great that I was driven out! As the saying goes, “What seems like good or bad news now can turn out to be the opposite in the future.”
Ironically, the research and writing training from the University of Georgia significantly helped me develop my academic, professional, and personal writing. I worked hard in Georgia and it paid off: The learning and growth I experienced were incomparable.
As my personal example demonstrates, life is a total rollercoaster. Every now and then you are able to discover a new high, a ceiling-breaking moment, whereas in other moments you may feel like you’re falling deeper and deeper into hell. While these experiences can be incredibly tough, they present us with valuable opportunities to trust life and cultivate personal growth and learning.

Passage 7
After Mom died, I began visiting Dad every morning before I went to work. He was weak and moved slowly, but he always had a glass of freshly squeezed orange juice on the kitchen table for me, along with an unsigned note reading, “Drink your juice.” Such a gesture, I knew, was as far as Dad had ever been able to go in expressing his love. In fact, I remember, as a kid I had questioned Mom “Why doesn’t Dad love me?” Mom frowned (皱眉). “Who said he doesn’t love you?!” “Well, he never tells me.” I complained. “He never tells me either,” she said, smiling. “But look how hard he works to take care of us, to buy us food and clothes, and to pay for this house. That’s how your father tells us he loves us.”
I nodded slowly. I understood in my head, but not in my heart. I still wanted my father to put his arms around me and tell me he loved me. Dad owned and operated a small scrap metal (收破烂金属) business, and after school I often hung around while he worked. The machine that he used looked like a giant pair of scissors with blades (刃) thicker than my father’s body. If he didn’t feel those terrifying blades just right, he risked serious injury. “Why don’t you hire someone to do that for you?” Mom asked Dad one night as she bent over him and rubbed his aching shoulders with a strong smelling liniment (搽剂). “Why don’t you hire a cook?” Dad asked, giving her one of his rare smiles.
Many years later, during my first daily visit, after drinking the juice my father had squeezed for me, I walked over, hugged him and said, “I love you, Dad.” From then on I did this every morning. My father never told me how he felt about my hugs, and there was never any expression on his face when I gave hugs to him.

Passage 8
In 2019, the state of California was on fire. Alexandria Villaseor, who was 13 at the time, witnessed the destruction of Northern California’s Camp Fire, which would go on to burn more than 150,000 acres of land. Villaseor was scared. “That’s when I found out how important climate education was,” she reflected. “And just how much we lacked climate education these past couple of years.”
Villaseor, at the age of 15, was determined to have a bigger conversation. She quickly realized the fight requires international, government-level changes. For her, what started as local concern turned into a year-long protest in front of the United Nations’ New York City headquarters and a global campaign for more compulsory climate education. She sat on a bench in front of the headquarters, begging for the world’s leaders to take climate change seriously.
Her action received national attention, with millions of other students around the world joining in the movement. “It’s completely unacceptable not to learn anything about our planet and our environment in school, after all the young people would inherit the Earth.” Villaseor said, “That’s why I think that climate education is so important, and that’s why I focus a lot on it now.”
Right now, Villaseor is working with the American Administration on its climate plan, which has promised to center on the needs of young people and communities most impacted by climate change. She even spoke at the 2021 Democratic National Convention. “This was definitely a huge moment when I realized that people were listening to the voices of me and youth climate activists.” Villaseor said.
When she isn’t connecting with her fellow youth activists, Villaseor is like most other teens. “My favorite thing to do, of course, is sleep,” she said, “I like to read a lot. I like fantasy books, normally. I also like to write.”

Passage 9
I am sitting in an empty football field after my last high school football game has finished a few hours ago. I’m the quarterback (前卫) on my team. But in fact that’s not true now. I was the quarterback, and that’s a good way to end a high school football career at a high point.
I’ve been sitting here by myself shivering in the cold and thinking back over the game and other games I’ve played in my life. I’m looking at the goal and thinking how it always seemed to reach out and pull me with a secret, magical force.
I was 8 when I first started playing football. My dad loved football and would practice with me at home- passing, catching, running. He tried to teach me everything he knew about the game. “Just remember: don’t ever give up.” “Stay in the game. Don’t lose your concentration.” “Go out there-and give 110 percent every time.” Well, that was a long time ago but I still hear his words ringing in my ears. I had a lot on my mind before the game today. I don’t like things to be an end, I guess, and this was the last game, and it was the league championship. I was talking to myself and reminding myself about what to do and not to do. I didn’t sleep at all last night. But when the game started my mind became empty. Everything dropped away from me. I just lived in this game, this moment. I didn’t hear the crowd; I didn’t feel the cold or the pain; I never felt tired. I just kept my eyes on the ball, and inside a soft white light showing me the way to the goal, which was a beautiful feeling.
It’s all over now and it’s really getting cold here. It’s starting to snow. The sun’s almost gone and I can hardly see the goal. Now it’s dark and I’m sitting here all alone. Well, I guess it’s time to say goodbye and move on.

Passage 10
In his senior year of high school, Wei Fangjie happened to see a poster for recruiting (征募) PLA Air Force pilots. “The pilots on the poster looked really cool, and I got to know that a pilot is known as a profession of the brave. So, I decided to give it a try,” said Wei, 26, who now works as a flight instructor at the Air Force Aviation (航空) University.
According to Wei, pilot students need to not only study aviation theory but also practice difficult aerobatics (飞行特技), which require strong resistance to gravity force. “To do some of the movements, a pilot has to bear about three times their body weight pressing down on them,” said Wei. They also use special equipment like a spinning ladder to overcome dizziness.
Despite all the training, becoming a top PLA Air Force pilot remains a tough job. “During flight, pilots must carefully decide how to land, especially at night, and maintain position during formation flight,” explained Wei. He added that the key to these skills lies in continuous practice.
In the world of aviation, a balanced mentality and quick thinking are very important. One of Wei’s most unforgettable experiences was dealing with illusions during a formation flight up above the clouds. All he could see in front of him was the lead aircraft and clouds. “I felt like I was turning all the time, but my instruments showed that my flight was level,” said Wei. “In such situations, trusting instruments is essential to making sound decisions.”
But what always remains constant is the great sense of freedom and pride that Wei feels as he flies his aircraft in the sky and looks down at Earth from above. Now, as an experienced flight instructor, Wei hopes to channel his passion for aviation into the “training and development of a new generation of skilled pilots.”

I can help raise environmental awareness in my community by organizing a recycling campaign。

4.High school is more than a pathway.
5.My unforgettable moment in high school was winning the championship in the school basketball tournament. It was an exciting moment for me and my teammates.
根据第二段“I selected courses I had absolutely no interest in just to boost my average.(我选择了我完全不感兴趣的课程,只是为了提高我的平均成绩)”可知,作者选择了他不喜欢的课程是为了提高他的平均成绩。 To boost his average.

根据后文“Instead of thinking years into my career, I try to think just one day at a time.(我试着一次只考虑一天,而不是考虑我职业生涯的几年)”可知,作者一次只考虑一天的事,所以之前应是过度思考了,所以推知rabbit hole应是“过度思考”之意,和overthinking意思相近。
根据最后一段“That night changed everything. I understand now that high school is more than just a pathway to adulthood. High school is a rightful destination of its own.(那一夜改变了一切。我现在明白了高中不仅仅是通往成年的道路。高中有它自己的归宿)”可知,作者对高中的新态度是高中不仅仅是一条道路。故答案为High school is more than a pathway.
My unforgettable moment in high school was winning the championship in the school basketball tournament. It was an exciting moment for me and my teammates.

5.What will you do if you are in a dark moment? Please explain. (No more than 20 words)
____________________________________________________________________________________________
1.His almost being kicked out of PhD program
2.be full of

4.The research and writing training helped him professionally and academically
5.I will seek support and stay positive, believing that the difficulties are temporary and trying to find a solution.
根据文章第一段“When I think of the hardest moments of my life, ironically many have turned out to be blessings. The most severe one was being pretty much kicked out of my. PhD program at the University of Georgia in 2016. (当我回想起生命中最艰难的时刻时,具有讽刺意味的是,许多事情最后都变成了我的祝福。最严重的一次是我几乎被踢出2016年在乔治亚大学的博士项目。)”可知,作者一生中最艰难的时刻是在2016年作者差点被踢出在乔治亚大学的博士项目。故答案为His almost being kicked out of PhD program。
根据划线词组下一句“I was in therapy myself for most of the year to cope, and the only thing that made it tolerable was a lot of support from my family and friends. (我大部分时间都在接受治疗来应对这种压力,而唯一让我能够忍受这一切的是来自家人和朋友的巨大支持。)”可知,由于课程不适合作者,作者整整一年都充满了疲倦、不安全、恐惧和排斥。由此可知,划线词组的意思和“充满”相似。故答案为be full of。
根据第三段内容“I was utterly devastated when I went back home; it felt like my career was over. As the saying goes, “What seems like good or bad news now can turn out to be the opposite in the future.” What seems like bad news now can turn out to be good in the future。
根据文章第四题“Ironically, the research and writing training from the University of Georgia significantly helped me develop my academic, professional, and personal writing. I worked hard in Georgia and it paid off: The learning and growth I experienced were incomparable. (具有讽刺意味的是,乔治亚大学的研究和写作训练对我的学术、专业和个人写作都有很大的帮助。我在乔治亚努力学习,并得到了回报:我经历的学习和成长是无与伦比的。)”可知,作者感谢乔治亚大学是因为那里的研究和写作训练对他的学术、专业和个人写作能力发展有重要帮助。故答案为The research and writing training helped him professionally and academically.
I will seek support and stay positive, believing that the difficulties are temporary and trying to find a solution.

____________________________________________________________________________________________
5.Are you moved by this story? Tell us how you will show your love for your parents.(no more than 20 words)
____________________________________________________________________________________________
1.Drink your juice.

3.By working hard and taking care of his family.
4.The author’s father is hardworking and kind of humourous.
5.Yes, I’m moved. And I will express love through regular visits, thoughtful gestures, and heartfelt conversations with my parents.
根据第一段中“He was weak and moved slowly, but he always had a glass of freshly squeezed orange juice on the kitchen table for me, along with an unsigned note reading, “Drink your juice.”(他身体虚弱,行动缓慢,但他总是在厨房的桌子上为我准备一杯鲜榨的橙汁,还有一张没有签名的纸条,上面写着:“喝果汁。”)” Drink your juice.
根据第一段中“In fact, I remember, as a kid I had questioned Mom “Why doesn’t Dad love me?” Mom frowned (皱眉). “Who said he doesn’t love you?!” “Well, he never tells me.” I complained.(事实上,我记得,当我还是个孩子的时候,我问过妈妈:“为什么爸爸不爱我?”妈妈皱起眉头。“谁说他不爱你了?”“嗯,他从来没告诉过我。”我抱怨道)”可推知,作者向母亲抱怨父亲是因为父亲从未用语言表达对作者的爱。故答案为Because his father never expressed love to him verbally.
根据第一段中作者妈妈的话“But look how hard he works to take care of us, to buy us food and clothes, and to pay for this house. That’s how your father tells us he loves us.(但看看他是多么努力地工作来照顾我们,给我们买吃的和穿的,付这所房子的钱。你父亲就是这样告诉我们他爱我们的)”可知,父亲通过努力工作和照顾家庭来表达他的爱。故答案为By working hard and taking care of his family.
根据第二段中““Why don’t you hire someone to do that for you?” Mom asked Dad one night as she bent over him and rubbed his aching shoulders with a strong smelling liniment (搽剂). “Why don’t you hire a cook?” The author’s father is hardworking and kind of humourous.
Yes, I’m moved. And I will express love through regular visits, thoughtful gestures, and heartfelt conversations with my parents.

根据第一段“In his senior year of high school, Wei Fangjie happened to see a poster for recruiting (征募) PLA Air Force pilots. “The pilots on the poster looked really cool, and I got to know that a pilot is known as a profession of the brave. So, I decided to give it a try,” said Wei, 26, who now works as a flight instructor at the Air Force Aviation (航空) University.(在高三的时候,魏方杰偶然看到了一张招募空军飞行员的海报。“海报上的飞行员看起来真的很酷,我知道飞行员是一种勇敢的职业。所以,我决定试一试,”现年26岁的魏说,他现在是空军航空大学的一名飞行教官)”可知,魏方杰决定成为一名飞行员是因为他看到了飞行员的海报,钦佩他们的勇敢。故答案为Because he saw a poster featuring the pilots and admired their bravery.
根据第二段“According to Wei, pilot students need to not only study aviation theory but also practice difficult aerobatics (飞行特技), which require strong resistance to gravity force.(魏表示,飞行员学生不仅需要学习航空理论,还需要练习高难度的特技飞行,这需要对重力有很强的抵抗力)”可知,魏方杰认为,要成为合格的飞行员,学生应该培养对重力的抵抗力。 Develop resistance to gravity forces.
根据第三段“He added that the key to these skills lies in continuous practice.(他补充说,这些技能的关键在于不断的练习)”可知,在魏方杰看来,要想成为一名顶级飞行员,掌握所需技能的关键是频繁的训练。 Frequent training.
根据划线词上文“as an experienced flight instructor, Wei hopes to”以及后文“passion for aviation into the “training and development of a new generation of skilled pilots.””
I think Wei is a responsible person because he’s willing to devote himself to his career and training a new generation of skilled pilots.
