Here are some wonderful festivals around the world that happen in spring. If you want to know
more about them, please click Here or visit http://wws.buddhanet.netlfestival.Htm
SongKran — Thailand
Dates: 13th — 15th, April
In Thailand, people celebrate a festival called Songkran, when people bead out to the streets
with water guns to spray (喷洒) everyone who walks past. It’s a very important traditional
celebration in the country.
Naghol — Vanuatu
Dates: Every Saturday from April to May
Every year, villagers come together to celebrate the harvest of yams (甘薯), an important part
in the people’s diet in Vanuatu. The festival is most famous for its “land diving ceremony”. During
the ceremony men and boys dive to the ground from high wooden towers with only two thin vines
(藤) tied to their feet.
Cherry Blossom Viewing — Japan
Dates: The cherry blossom season is different from year to year depending on the weather.
The festival is well-known. The Japanese celebrate the days when the flowers finally blossom
(开花). Only a few days later, the petals (花瓣) fall to the ground, like pink snowflakes. That means
the traditional festival only lasts for several days. In Japan, almost everyone has picnics in the parks
to view the flowers.
Sinhalese New Year — Sri Lanka
Dates: 13th or 14th, April
Just like in many other countries in South East Asia, this is the time when people celebrate the
traditional New Year, an ancient celebration which marks the end of the harvest season and is one
of two times of the year when the sun is straight above Sri Lanka. There are a lot of delicious foods
during the celebration.
1. What will most likely happen to a tourist walking in the street during SongKran in Thailand?
A. He will hurt his feet. B. He will get wet.

forever. Her musical style, with a heavy diet of that old rock and roll music, shares some similar
features with 90s music.

schedule a variety of shows to promote her new EP. While you still can, you simply cannot miss out

Up to one quarter of the world’s population use chopsticks as their main eating tool. Called
kuaizi in Chinese, chopsticks were developed in China about 5,000 years ago. Often made of wood,
chopsticks allow users to pick up pieces of food by holding together and releasing (松开) the sticks
with the thumb and first three fingers.
Before the invention of chopsticks, the Chinese used only their hands to eat. One reason why
chopsticks were invented is that eating with one’s hands allowed some people to take more food
than others. This was considered rude, so using chopsticks, which limited the amount of food that
could be taken at one time, was thought to be a more polite practice. Another one was about the
great Chinese philosopher Confucius, who was a vegetarian(素食主义者). He objected to the use
of knives at the table, feeling that they reminded eaters of the slaughterhouse (屠宰场), so he
preferred chopsticks.
At first, chopsticks were used only by nobles (贵族). Later on, during the Western Han Dynasty,
which began in 202 BC, commoners (平民) began to use chopsticks as well. At that time, people
used chopsticks only to eat side dishes; spoons were used for rice and for soups. During the
Northern Song Dynasty, which lasted from AD 960 to 1127, noodles became a popular dish. It is
very difficult to eat noodles with a spoon, so chopsticks were used more often. Today, chopsticks
are the main eating tool in China, Japan, and Vietnam; and people from countries all over the world
commonly use this tool while eating Asian dishes.
8. What is the second paragraph mainly about?
A. The popularity of chopsticks. B. The process of making chopsticks.
C. The method of using chopsticks. D. The reasons for inventing chopsticks.
9. What does the underlined phrase “objected to” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Led to B. Was against
C. Believed in D. Agreed with
10. Who first began to use chopsticks?
A. Philosophers. B. Common people.
C. Nobles. D. Vegetarians.
11. When did eating with chopsticks become common?
A. After noodles became popular. B. Just before forks came into use.
C. During the Western Han Dynasty. D. Before the Northern Song Dynasty.

The Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region is an important ecological screen (生态屏障) for the
north of China and even the whole country. Building a green great wall to ensure China’s ecological
security is one of the most important things of the Autonomous Region.
As the largest ecological function zone in the north of China, Inner Mongolia has a variety of
landscapes, including forests, grasslands, wetlands, rivers and lakes. In recent years, the region’s
environment has improved, with its forest and grassland areas having increased and desert(沙漠 )
reduced.
However, it still faces a number of challenges in ecological preservation(生态保护 ). For
instance, the region faces severe water shortages with the number of lakes dropping from 427 in
1987 to 145 in 2010. In addition to a lack of rainfall, huge water consumption (消耗) in agricultural
and industrial production has worsened the water shortage. Too much use of fertilizers (化肥) has
damaged the soil and affected the growth of grass, accelerating the expansion of the desert.
The local government encourages planting trees on grasslands as they can get more pay by
growing trees than grass. However, the trees they plant often have a low survival rate as they have a
high water consumption rate. Also, to treat wetlands, some areas have planted a large number of a
single tree species. This practice may damage biodiversity(生物多样性) and endanger the survival
of certain animals.
Experts suggest taking the region’s water resources and weather conditions into consideration
in future ecological projects.
12. What do we know about the green great wall in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region?
A. It adds the beautiful scenery to this area.
B. It acts as a guard to protect the north of China.
C. It works well in saving the endangered animals.
D. It contributes to the decrease of grasslands.
13. What does the third paragraph mainly talk about?
A. The causes of water shortages. B. The protection of ecological environment.
C. The solutions to water shortages. D. The importance of ecological environment.
14. What does the underlined word “accelerating” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Weakening. B. Shortening.
C. Lightening. D. Quickening.
15. What’s the writer’s attitude towards the government’s encouraging planting trees?
A. Supportive. B. Subjective.
C. Objective. D. Indifferent.

As a single mother, I’ve never doubted my daughter Jane’s dream to be a singer on the stage.
At an early age, she was crazy about singing. Whenever she had a chance, she would sing to her
heart’s content. Her sweet and charming voice tended to get people around attracted to her songs.
Living in a small city, I took several odd jobs(零工), determined to do everything in my
power to support her. Soon after Jane attended school, her music teacher Mary noticed her talent by
揭东区第二中学 2024-2025 学年第二学期高一级期中考试英语试题 第 9页(共 8 页)
chance and volunteered to give her some guidance on how to sing. Jane practiced so hard that
before long she made great progress in singing.
Unfortunately, one noon a year later, Jane was crossing the street when a careless driver
knocked her down. She was rushed to hospital. When I hurried there, the doctor told me that my
daughter would probably not stand on her own feet. I froze with shock, feeling as if I had been
thrown into a dark world. Weak and dizzy(头晕), I was about to fall to the ground when someone
took hold of me.
It was Mary, who got the news and raced here. She comforted me, saying firmly, “Grace, Jane
needs you. You must stay calm and strong.” I nodded. Having calmed down, I entered the ward with
Mary.
That night, Jane recovered her consciousness (知觉) and opened her eyes. Holding her hand, I
said, “My dear, everything would be fine.” Mary comforted her gently, “I know you are a strong girl,
Jane. Don’t worry. We’ll be standing by you.” I was heartbroken to see tears streaming down Jane’s
cheeks.
After two months, we returned home from hospital. Her teachers and friends frequently
visited her. Jane eventually(最终) accepted the fact that she would have to get around in a
wheelchair(轮椅). Never did she refer to the subject of singing again. I knew she was a nice and
understanding girl, who was afraid that talking about her original dream would upset the two of us.
One day, however, Mary came with good news. She told Jane the school music festival was to
be held the next month and that her classmates all expected her to sing on behalf of her class. Jane’s
eyes sparkled but responded doubtfully, “Can I...?” Mary and I immediately assured her that she
could make it. In the following month, with the help of Mary, Jane kept on practicing singing.
Beautiful songs echoed in our house again and smiles began to appear on her face. Finally the big
day came when she could present herself.

Dear friends,
Welcome to our Chinese Culture Week! It is a great honor for me to introduce the
Dragon Boat festival to you all.
The Dragon Boat festival falls on the 5th day of the 5th lunar month. It has its origin in
honoring Qu Yuan, a great poet who loved his country deeply. To celebrate it, people hold a
variety of activities, ranging from dragon boat races to making zongzi—sticky rice wrapped
in bamboo leaves, which symbolizes blessings. Besides, families gather to share joy and pass
down traditions.
More than just a holiday, the Dragon Boat festival reflects Chinese values – respect for
history and love for family. I hope you can join us to experience this wonderful tradition.
Thank you for listening.
