“Good afternoon, everyone. I am excited to share my research on...” Oh no! No! No! “...my research on...” Why was this happening to me again? My knees were giving way; my throat felt drier with every second. It was the annual presentation at my department, where 50 pairs of keen eyes stared at me, anticipating my next words.
Although I felt confident at my work bench and comfortable discussing my research with my lab mates, my nature silenced me when I faced a larger, unfamiliar audience. Prior to graduate school, I had no experience in public speaking, and now the fear took my breath away. But with more public speaking ahead, I refused to let my nerves hold me back again.
I took a big step outside my comfort zone to sign up for an open mic (即兴式表演) event at a local stand-up comedy club. I’d always admired the confidence of stand-up comedians, and I thought the joyful atmosphere might allow a bit more room for error.
Not having received thunderous applause, I was surprised to find I enjoyed my time on stage. And I felt I could do better, so I went to Sania, a brilliant comic whose sharpness and expressiveness made her the highlight of the evening, for recourse.
“Attend more open mic events,” she advised. “Watch more comics perform.” For the next few months, I attended numerous sessions, observing how skilled orators presented their stories and conveyed complex scientific data through easily digested takeaways. With my script (手稿) in hand, I started to work on my research presentation tirelessly.
Alone, with colleagues, and even with unsuspecting visitors — every audience counted. I paid special attention to every pause and hand gesture. Initially, it felt forced and unnatural. However, with each go, my presentation became more smooth and organic. Slowly but surely, my words shifted into muscle memory.
When my next research presentation came, the difference was clear. My confidence, eloquence, and presentation skills had improved dramatically. I finished to applause rather than an awkward silence.

5. Why did the author sign up for a stand-up comedy event?
A. To gain access to famous comedians and make progress.
B. To deliver science knowledge in a different way.
C. To pursue a career in the field of stand-up comedy.
D. To overcome fear of public speaking and build confidence.
6. What does the underlined word “recourse” in paragraph 4 probably mean?
A. Evidence. B. Forgiveness. C. Assistance. D. Recognition.

Scientists in Australia have successfully used AI to locate the endangered Plains-wanderer. Once common in eastern Australia, the Plains-wanderer now faces a critical situation, with only 250 to 1,000 individuals remaining in the wild, as grasslands have been turned into farms and cities. There has been a striking 85% drop in their numbers over recent decades.
The Plains-wanderer is a small, ground-dwelling bird, standing only about six inches (15 centimeters) tall. Unlike many other birds, it is not good at flying and spends most of its time on the ground. When threatened, it crouches to hide and prefers to run rather than fly. The bird is highly selective about its habitat (栖息地) — There can’t be too much grass or too little. This specific requirement has earned it the nickname “Goldilocks” of animals.
Given the Plains-wanderer’s odd nature and the challenges of visually spotting it, Zoos Victoria worked with scientists from Queensland University of Technology to develop a unique approach to locate the birds. Instead of relying on traditional methods, the team decided to “listen” for the birds. Female Plains-wanderers produce a distinctive “Ooom” call, which became the key to their detection. Researchers placed 35 specialized recording devices, known as song meters, across nine potential grassland habitats. These devices collected tens of thousands of hours of audio (音频的) recordings, far more than humans could analyze.
To manage the vast amount of data, the team turned to an AI system trained to identify the calls of Plains-wanderers. The system successfully detected the bird’s calls at two sites, a discovery later confirmed by scientists. Chris Hartnett of Zoos Victoria described the find was like “finding gold,” marking the first time in over 30 years that the Plains-wanderer has been detected west of Melbourne. He emphasized that the discovery is “huge” for conservation efforts.
This breakthrough provides critical information for protecting the Plains-wanderer and its habitat. The research team plans to cooperate with landowners to ensure the preservation of the grasslands essential for the bird’s survival. Meanwhile, the use of song meters and AI continues, as scientists aim to locate more of these birds and secure their future in the wild.
8. What is the primary reason for the decline in the Plains-wanderer population?
A. Climate change. B. Low birth rate. C. Human disturbance. D. Inter-species competition.
9. What is mainly talked about in paragraph 3?
A. The appearance and living habits of Plains-wanderers.
B. The new method developed to spot Plains-wanderers.
C. The necessity of cooperation between zoos and universities.
D The reasons why traditional methods failed to locate Plains-wanderers.
10. What is Chris Hartnett’s attitude towards the discovery of Plains-wanderers?
A Positive. B. Doubtful. C. Uncaring. D. Worried.
11. What might be a result of the AI’s success in detecting the bird’s calls?
A. Scientists will invest more in AI’s development.
B. Some farmland will be transformed into the bird’s habitat.
C. Landowners will make profits from the trade of grasslands.
D. AI will be more widely applied in wildlife protection.
【答案】8. C 9. B 10. A 11. D

We’re all familiar with the trappings of science fiction, many of which generously stretch the possibilities of real science. But science fiction is not a place for outlandish escapism (古怪的逃避现实主义) — it holds an important position in contemporary culture, and its influence can even be seen in the direction of some real scientific and technological advances.
Sometimes, the language of fiction is shapes our thinking and approach to scientific investigation. But the connection between science fiction and science facts isn’t always metaphorical. Although not as extraordinary as visiting the Moon, many now-common gadgets (工具) were imagined in science fiction before entering the real world. The classic series Star Trek features several everyday technologies: video calls, automatic sliding doors and flip phones.
And it’s not only generalized visions of the future that find their way into reality: certain gadgets have been specifically designed with the inspiration from fictional tech. In 2016, Nike produced a limited run of self-lacing shoes in 1989’s Back to the Future Part II. This product wasn’t just fun: Nike partnered Michael J. Fox, who played Marty McFly in the Back to the Future series, to raise money for his foundation to fight Parkinson’s.
The influence of particular works of science fiction can even shape scientific investigations. For example, a black hole simulation (仿制) was developed for Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar, a movie about astronauts traveling to the other end of the galaxy to find a new home, which features Matthew McConaughey playing the leading part. To create the images seen in the film, Nolan asked Paul Franklin, the film’s visual effects supervisor, to work with Interstellar’s Nobel Prize-winning theoretical physics consultant, Kip Thorne. This was no small task for either of them. Thorne provided detailed equations (方程式) while Franklin and his team had to program new software to create the image. The resulting simulation provided new insights into gravitational lensing around black holes. The requirements of science fiction shaped the direction taken by a leading physicist in his own work. So, the influence of onscreen science fiction is not reserved for box-office takings, but can inspire real change in science and society.
12. What does the author say about science fiction in the first two paragraphs?
A. It’s a reflection of the real world. B. It offers an escape from the reality.
C. It makes full use of everyday items. D. It serves as an inspiration for real scientific research.
13. Why were Nike’s self-lacing shoes developed?
A. To promote a new movie release. B. To raise funds for a charitable cause.
C. To compete with other shoe brands. D. To test new technology for future products.
14. How did Kip Thorne help with the film Interstella?
A. He contributed to the visual representation of black holes.
B. He conducted measurements of actual black holes.
C. He wrote the fictional storyline for the film.
D. He developed certain software for the film.
15. Which of the following would be the best title for the text?
A. The Development of Science Fiction
B. The Role of Scientists in Film Production
C. The Impact of Science Fiction on Real Science
D. The Similarities between Science Fiction and Real Science
【答案】12. D 13. B 14. A 15. C

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
We’d always had a traditional Thanksgiving dinner with our parents and siblings (兄弟姐妹). But one year, my sister Karen warned us she would be late because she had to work a shift at the restaurant where she was a part-time waitress. We waited and waited, nibbling on carrot sticks and worrying as the food cooled.
Finally, Karen arrived at 5:45 p.m. and she was not alone. Inside the doorway, towering over her, was a dirty-faced guy wearing torn jeans and a broken shirt that stopped two inches short of his wrists. He gave a hesitant smile and raised his hand to wave “hello” at the four of us. Karen cheerfully introduced that the young man was David, someone she had met a few days earlier when leaving work. He was going through hard times and sometimes stood outside her workplace asking for change for meals.
My parents looked doubtful. Karen started talking faster, “You said one time that we could invite a friend to Thanksgiving dinner.”
My dad harrumphed (发出哼声) and sat at the table. My mother started asking when she could have possibly said that, but then she stopped and said, “Well, um...never mind. Let’s all sit down!” And then she started asking questions.
Through conversation, we learned that that David was a college student who struggled to find enough work to cover tuition and rent. With loan payments and rent due, he’d given up his apartment and was living in his car. He answered every question and thanked my parents for letting him in over and over again.
My elder sister and I eagerly watched back and forth between our mom, David, and our little sister, Karen. We were fascinated by this situation, and wondered how much trouble Karen would be in with our parents after our surprise guest left.
注意:1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Out of everyone’s expectations, my dad said, “Let’s eat together.”
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
From then on, my parents started a new family tradition on Thanksgiving.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】One possible version:
Out of everyone’s expectations, my dad said, “Let’s eat together.” At that moment, the tense atmosphere in the room instantly relaxed. David’s eyes lit up with gratitude. We all took our seats, and the conversation flowed more freely. Karen shared some funny stories from work, making everyone laugh. My parents, gradually warming up to David, offered more food to him, telling him to make himself at home. David seemed to forget his troubles for a while, enjoying the delicious meal and the company of our family.
From then on, my parents started a new family tradition on Thanksgiving. We would actively search for someone in need to join our dinner. We got to know different people, heard their unique stories of hardship and resilience, and shared our warmth and love. Through these interactions, we learned so much about compassion and the power of human connection. This simple act not only brought joy and a sense of belonging to those facing hardships but also made our family closer and more empathetic. It taught us that the true spirit of Thanksgiving lies not just in the food on the table but in giving, sharing, and opening our hearts to others.

4. What can we learn about the author’s annual al presentation?
A. He fell short of expectations. B. He suffered from pains in his throat.
C. He lacked confidence in his research. D. He delivered it successfully on behalf of his department.
5. Why did the author sign up for a stand-up comedy event?
A. To gain access to famous comedians and make progress.
B. To deliver science knowledge in a different way.
C. To pursue a career in the field of stand-up comedy.
D To overcome fear of public speaking and build confidence.
6. What does the underlined word “recourse” in paragraph 4 probably mean?

D. The reasons why traditional methods failed to locate Plains-wanderers.
10. What is Chris Hartnett’s attitude towards the discovery of Plains-wanderers?
A. Positive. B. Doubtful. C. Uncaring. D. Worried.

注意:1.续写词数应为150个左右;
