That morning, I dropped our eldest at kindergarten and returned home to let our two younger children play while I worked on my medical report. It was wonderful, but it hit me that my career in hospital wasn't making a difference in anyone's life. I needed something that would stretch my limits and push me to grow. My career enabled me to work from home. I could work from home, and become a foster (领养) mother, providing safety for a child who needed it desperately.
On Monday morning, I picked up the phone and dialed the number I had googled for the nearest Department of Children's Services. The man on the other end was receptive to my questions and explained the next step of training, involving eight weeks of classes designed to prepare and educate foster parents. We continued through all the classes, the home visits, background checks, and seemingly endless steps.
Five long months after we were approved, the phone rang. In the middle of the night, I woke my husband and rushed to East Tennessee Children's' Hospital. Our placement was waiting for us in the emergency room, sick and lack of nutrition. It didn't take long for us to realize the full depth of her suffering. Six months later, her half-brother came to us by our request. We now had five children under our care.
On August 12, 2016, our family of seven walked into a small courtroom. The children's lawyer and social worker were there. With just a few words, our adoption was finalized. These two amazing children weren't going home, because they were already home. We are their forever family, and they are our forever children. We may not be able to change the entire world, but we have changed the world entirely for our new children.
31. How did the author feel about her hospital work?
A. Unusually demanding. B. Lacking in motivation.
C Filled with challenges. D. Packed with chances.
32. What led the author to decide to adopt children?
A. She wanted to make a difference in other people.
B. She felt sympathetic for abused children she knew.
C. She felt confident about her ability to raise children.
D. She experienced training to raise children properly.
33. What can be inferred from Paragraph 2?
A. The foster parents must be healthy and well-educated.
B. It was impossible to go through all the endless process.
C. The man on the phone was nice and gave clear instructions.
D. The home visits and background checks would take eight weeks.
34. What does the underlined word "placement" in Paragraph3 refer to?
A. The child to be adopted. B. The need to get trained.
C. The approval of adoption. D. The official at the hospital.
35. Why did the author appear at the courtroom?
A. To put the adopted kids elsewhere. B. To receive another adopted child.
C. To begin the kids' adoption in her home. D. To make the adoption officially legal.
C
Turning 18 is a big deal when you are a teenager. It means you are responsible for yourself and don’t need your parents’ permission anymore. However, there are lots of opinions about when one becomes an adult. Some are based on science, while others are personal opinions.
While currently the age is 18, science supports 25 as a more sensible age for adulthood, and I agree. While studying the brain of teenagers, scientists have learned that when kids are around 18, their prefrontal cortex (前额皮层) is only halfway developed. The prefrontal cortex helps people set and achieve goals by receiving signals from different regions of the brain to process information and adapting accordingly. That halfway development means that you still have things to learn and your brains still have time to develop until the age of 25.
Some people think going off to college and living on your own qualify you as an adult, while others may believe having a steady income and being able to afford to live on your own are what make you an adult. Not everyone has a fortunate life where they have family that can provide support; there are situations where you are forced to become an “adult” whether you like it or not.
In the foster care (寄养) system, once a child turns 18, he or she is considered an adult and can no longer receive state-sponsored support. These children are forced into a life where they have no family or anyone to support them other than those who were there for them in the system.
Having a quality job will allow you to supply yourself with necessary things to live and help you become a more mature and responsible person. Also, going through difficult times and realizing life isn’t as easy as it seems, should qualify someone as an adult.
36. What is the author’s attitude toward considering 25 as an age for adulthood?
A. Cautious. B. Uncaring.
C. Doubtful. D. Positive.
37. How does the prefrontal cortex work to help people set and achieve goals?
A. By dealing with received signals and responding accordingly.
B. By collecting information from other parts of the body.
C. By sending instructions to different regions of the brain.
D By transporting sensed emotions and making records.
38. What does the author intend to do in paragraph 3?
A. Give a definition of adulthood.
B. Stress the importance of family support.
C. Prove not everyone lives a fortunate life.
D. Show opinion on becoming an adult is divided.
39. What does the underlined word “them” in paragraph 4 refer to?
A. Families. B. Children in the foster system.
C. Workers in the foster system. D. Adults.
40. What is one standard qualifying you as an adult according to the author?
A. Setting up a family. B. Being responsible for your study.
C. Embracing the low moments in life. D. Buying yourself quality things to live.

I got excited at the news told by the nurse that we could make preparations for taking our new born twins, David and Mark, home with us. However, I had no idea what should I do as a father. “How can I take care of such delicate (脆弱) creatures at home without your instructions?” I asked. The nurse laughed, “Don’t worry. You will be fine. They know how to tell you their needs.”
It was the beginning of a lifelong journey, David and Mark were just like a lump of clay (一块黏土), which my wife, Karen and I, to some degree, could shape. I wondered how to shape them and make them become great men — not men only with strong build and healthy bodies, but men of character, integrity (正直) and bravery, and with a positive influence.
When our sons were learning to walk I got a suggestion: Always treat your sons like the adults they are capable of becoming, and make them become men. The advice let Karen and me know what really matters in life and intentionally build values into their life.
But how could we develop their character and build values into their life? Finally Karen and I decided to have meaningful dialogues about some role models while taking a walk with them in the morning. And each night, I read them a bedtime story about positive figures. One night, when I was doing so, I realized just as the story reached the climax (高潮), I saw wonder in their eyes. I realized I often missed those expressions when reading the story. So I ceased reading stories to them. Instead, I started telling them stories I created about a good boy and a bad boy facing a moral dilemma so I could watch their faces. They warmly discussed the right thing to do before I revealed how the characters handled the situation. This full-eye-contact storytelling helped us bond each other. And they gradually became the kind of people that Karen and I wanted them to be.
Now thinking back, I think my greatest achievement in life is that my sons have the values Karen and I hold dear.

C. Filled with challenges.
A The child to be adopted.
31. B 32. A 33. C 34. A 35. D

根据第一段中的“it hit me that my career in hospital wasn't making a difference in anyone's life. I needed something that would stretch my limits and push me to grow”可知,作者突然意识到作者在医院的职业生涯并没有改变任何人的生活。
根据第一段中的“it hit me that my career in hospital wasn't making a difference in anyone's life. I needed something that would stretch my limits and push me to grow. My career enabled me to work from home. I could work from home, and become a foster (领养) mother, providing safety for a child who needed it desperately”可知,作者有一天突然意识到自己在医院的职业生涯并没有改变任何人的生活。 故选A。
根据第二段中“The man on the other end was receptive to my questions and explained the next step of training, involving eight weeks of classes designed to prepare and educate foster parents. We continued through all the classes, the home visits, background checks, and seemingly endless steps”可知,周一早上,我拿起电话,拨通了谷歌上最近的儿童服务部门的电话号码。
根据该段中的“Five long months after we were approved, the phone rang. In the middle of the night, I woke my husband and rushed to East Tennessee Children's' Hospital. Our placement was waiting for us in the emergency room, sick and lack of nutrition”可知,作者在获得收养孩子的批准五个月之后,电话响了。 故选A。
根据最后一段中的“On August 12, 2016, our family of seven walked into a small courtroom. The children's lawyer and social worker were there. With just a few words, our adoption was finalized”可知,作者出现在小法庭上完成了收养程序。
D. By transporting sensed emotions and making records.
A Setting up a family. B. Being responsible for your study.
C. Embracing the low moments in life. D. Buying yourself quality things to live.
D 37. A 38. D 39. B 40. C

根据第二段中“The prefrontal cortex helps people set and achieve goals by receiving signals from different regions of the brain to process information and adapting accordingly.(前额叶皮层通过接收来自大脑不同区域的信号来处理信息并相应地适应,从而帮助人们设定和实现目标)”可知,前额叶皮层通过处理接收到的信号并作出相应的反应,进而帮助人们设定和实现目标。故选A项。
根据第三段“Some people think going off to college and living on your own qualify you as an adult, while others may believe having a steady income and being able to afford to live on your own are what make you an adult. Not everyone has a fortunate life where they have family that can provide support; there are situations where you are forced to become an “adult” whether you like it or not.(有些人认为上大学和独立生活使你成为一个成年人,而其他人可能认为有稳定的收入和能够负担得起自己的生活是使你成为一个成年人的标志。不是每个人都有幸运的生活,有家人可以提供支持;有些情况下,不管你喜欢与否,你都被迫成为一个“成年人”)”可以推知,作者在第三段中想要表明对于成为成年人的看法有很不同的观点,存在分歧。故选D项。
【39题详解】
词句猜测题。根据倒数第二段“In the foster care (寄养) system, once a child turns 18, he or she is considered an adult and can no longer receive state-sponsored support. These children are forced into a life where they have no family or anyone to support them other than those who were there for them in the system.(在寄养系统中,一旦孩子年满18岁,他或她就被视为成年人,不能再接受国家资助的支持。这些孩子被迫过一种除了那些在系统中为他们提供帮助的人外,没有家人或任何人支持他们的生活)”和指代关系可知,划线代词them指代的是上文中These children,即上一句话中的“寄养系统里的孩子”。故选B项。
【40题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段中“Also, going through difficult times and realizing life isn’t as easy as it seems, should qualify someone as an adult.(此外,经历困难时期并意识到生活并不像看起来那么容易,应该让人取得成年人资格)”可知,作者认为在生活中经历了困难时期,拥抱人生低谷,是成为成年人的标准之一。故选C项。

I got excited at the news told by the nurse that we could make preparations for taking our new born twins, David and Mark, home with us. However, I had no idea what should I do as a father. “How can I take care of such delicate (脆弱的) creatures at home without your instructions?” I asked.
When our sons were learning to walk, I got a suggestion: Always treat your sons like the adults they are capable of becoming, and make them become men.

根据文章第一段“I got excited at the news told by the nurse that we could make preparations for taking our new born twins, David and Mark, home with us. However, I had no idea what should I do as a father.(听到护士说我可以准备将双胞胎David和Mark带回家时,我非常激动。然而,我却不知道作为父亲应该做什么)”可知,作者得知可以带双胞胎回家时感到兴奋,但也担心自己不知道如何照顾孩子,故答案为Excited but worried.
根据文章第二段“I wondered how to shape them and make them become great men — not men only with strong build and healthy bodies, but men of character, integrity (正直) and bravery, and with a positive influence.(我想知道如何塑造他们,使他们成为伟大的人——不仅是一个健壮、身体健康的人,而且是有品格、正直、勇敢和积极影响的人)”可知,作者希望将儿子培养成有品格、正直、勇敢且有正能量的人,因此在儿子的成长中,作者看重的是品格和价值观,故答案Character and values.
根据划线词ceased后文的内容“Instead, I started telling them stories I created about a good boy and a bad boy facing a moral dilemma so I could watch their faces.(相反,我开始给他们讲我编的关于一个好孩子和一个坏男孩面临道德困境的故事,这样我就可以观察他们的表情)”可知,划线词ceased后文提到,作者开始给儿子讲自己编的故事,故此处划线词ceased意为“停止”,我“停止”给他们读故事,而是开始给儿子讲自己编的故事,故答案为Stopped.
根据文章第四段“Instead, I started telling them stories I created about a good boy and a bad boy facing a moral dilemma so I could watch their faces. They warmly discussed the right thing to do before I revealed how the characters handled the situation. This full-eye-contact storytelling helped us bond each other. And they gradually became the kind of people that Karen and I wanted them to be.(相反,我开始给他们讲我编的一个关于一个好孩子和一个坏男孩面临道德困境的故事,这样我就可以观察他们的表情。在我透露角色是如何处理这种情况之前,他们热烈地讨论了正确的做法,这种全方位的眼神交流故事帮助我们建立了联系。他们逐渐成为了Karen和我希望他们成为的那种人)”可知,作者和妻子通过讨论榜样人物和讲述道德故事来培养孩子的价值观,因此答案为They had meaningful dialogues about role models and told moral stories.

My life in senior high school has been really interesting. We have a tight schedule with different courses every day. Math, English, and physics take up most of my study time. Besides study, there are many after-school activities. I often play basketball with my classmates, which helps me relax.
For the coming two years, I plan to work hard to be among the top students. I also want to join the volunteer club to help others. I’ll manage my time carefully, setting aside enough hours for study and club activities.
Looking forward to hearing from you soon.
