Are you interested in ancient Britain? Take a trip back in time and discover the Britain ancestors knew.
Avebury, Wiltshire
This village is the proud home of the largest stone circle in Europe. Built during the New Stone Age (around 3000 BC), archaeologists think it was used to comfort the powers of nature. The nearby Avebury Manor let people know how the village developed over the centuries. Unlike others, visitors are welcome to sit on the chairs, and lie on the beds.
Skara Brae, Orkney Islands
Older than Stonehenge and the Great Pyramid of Giza, Skara Brae is unusually well-kept. So much so that it’s been described as the most remarkable prehistoric monument in all of Europe. The Neolithic village— which was first occupied around 3180 BC—is made up of eight round houses, connected by a series of small passages. The village was home to farmers, hunters and fishermen and the network of homes includes a workshop and prison. Be sure to wrap up warm against the fierce Orkney winds.
Butser Ancient Farm, Hampshire
Experimental archaeologist Dr Peter J Reynolds founded Butser Ancient Farm in 1970 with a special vision: to create a working ancient farm where fellow archaeologists could explore their theories on how people lived and worked during the Iron Age. Near South Downs National Park, the farm builds ancient houses based on real archaeological sites from around the country.
Maiden Castle
Maiden Castle is one of the largest and most complex Iron Age hill forts (要塞) in Britain. It has an area of about 450,000 square meters, and the site was home to several hundred people in the Iron Age (800 BC—AD 43).

A. Avebury. B. Skara Brae.

Many people, some even at a very young age, set the goal of graduating from college. One American woman in Texas waited a long time for her chance to reach that goal.
The woman, 85-year-old Janet Fein, received her bachelor’s degree (学士学位) from the University of Texas in December, 2018.
Fein has had a full life. She raised five children and then had a career as a secretary (秘书) until she retired at age 77. But even then, she was not ready to take it easy and rest during a well-earned retirement. She decided to major in sociology (社会学).
Fein grew up in the Bronx area of New York City. In high school, she just wanted to finish and get a job. After graduating early, at the age of 16, she went to work as a secretary.
After getting married, she spent 18 years staying home with her children. She held several jobs throughout her life, including being a secretary at a Dallas hospital. That is the job she retired from in 2011. She received an associate degree (专科学位) in 1995. But she also wanted to earn a bachelor’s degree. Fein took part in a state program that lets people who are 65 and older take free classes at public universities in Texas.
She kept going to class even as her health condition worsened. During her studies, it became necessary for her to use a walker to get around and she needed oxygen (氧气) too. She also developed knee problems. So, Fein took online classes to finish the last part of her degree requirements.
Renee Brown is one of Fein’s care-givers. She says Fein has also inspired her. At 53, she plans to begin nursing school to further her career. Brown says Fein told her, “Renee, you can do it. If I can do it you also can do it, and you will feel so good about it.”

Product placement (植入式广告) is a form of advertising in which a company pays a content creator to place its products on the set of a movie, TV show or music video. The oldest examples of products appearing in films date back to the production of a French motion picture in 1896. Recent years have witnessed the bloom of product placement. With viewers migrating to web videos, this trend makes sense.
When watching web videos, about 90% of consumers either skip or ignore those traditional ads that run before the video. So as advertisers struggle to reach potential consumers, they’re increasingly turning to product placement, spending their advertising budgets to get their ads into media content in ways that the ads can’t be skipped. Studies have shown product placement can increase viewer’s awareness of products and their positive attitudes toward them.
But not all product placement works as intended, and research has shown that advertisers need to engage in delicate dance with viewers to effectively influence them. Viewers tend to be turned off if the product placement is too obvious — as when a character in the show holds the product and talks about it. Most viewers don’t want to be immersed (沉浸) in an intense drama only to be reminded that they’re being targeted by corporations.
In contrast, viewers are most influenced by product placement in which the product or the brand name is spoken by one of the characters but not shown. These pieces of product placement are more likely to be noticed by viewers than those where products are simply shown on the screen. Also, viewers may be more attracted to product placement that appears earlier in a show or movie. Because they become more engaged as a movie or a show progresses. If the placement at the climax — the moment when their attention is fixed on what will happen next — they’re either less likely to notice the placement or more likely to be annoyed by it if they do notice it.
With increasing online viewers and better designed product placement, perhaps advertisers will consider product placement as their first choice. After all, it’s incredibly effective at getting the targeted audience interested without influencing their viewing experience.
8. What can we know about product placement?
A. It’s still popular nowadays. B. It first appeared in TV shows.
C. It was overlooked in the 1890s. D. It aims to make videos interesting.
9. What’s the advantage of product placement to advertisers over traditional ads?
A. It has a lower price. B. It’s more interesting.
C. It’s less likely to be ignored by viewers. D. It makes advertisers understand customers well.
10. What does the underlined part “be turned off” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A. Gain satisfaction. B. Get confused. C. Feel funny. D. Lose interest.
11. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Product Placement: the Future Trend for Advertising
B. Product Placement: a New Driving Force Behind Movies
C. Product Placement: a Mirror of the Advertisement History
D. Product Placement: the Perfect Companion to Online Videos
【答案】8. A 9. C 10. D 11. A

A new study by Japanese researchers concludes that listening to sad music may actually contribute to positive emotions. Researchers say the findings help to explain why people enjoy listening to sad music.
Ai Kawakami and the colleagues from Tokyo University of the Arts and the RIKEN Brain Science Institute asked 44 volunteers, including both musicians and non-specialists, to listen to two pieces of sad music and one piece of happy music. Each participant was required to use a set of keywords to rate both his perception of the music and his own emotional state.
The sad pieces of music included Glinka’s La Separation, Blumenfeld’s Etude Sur Mer and Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata. The happy music piece was Granados’s Allegro de Concierto or Tonci Huljic’s Croatian Rhapsody.
As reported in the open access journal Frontiers in Psychology, sad music aroused contradictory emotions among the participants. “In general, sad music causes sadness in listeners, and sadness is regarded as an unpleasant emotion. If sad music actually arouses only unpleasant emotions, we would not listen to it,” the researchers wrote in the study.
“Music that is regarded as a sad piece actually leads to romantic emotions as well as sad emotions. And people, regardless of their musical training, experience these contradictory emotions when listening to the sad music.” added the researchers.
Also, unlike sadness in daily life, sadness experienced through art actually makes us feel pleasant, possibly because the latter does not do an actual threat to our safety. This could help people to deal with their negative emotions in daily life, concluded the authors.
“Emotions experienced through music have no direct danger or harm unlike the emotions experienced in everyday life. Therefore, if we suffer from unpleasant emotions in daily life, sad music might be helpful to ease negative emotions.” they added.
12. The author in the passage wants to tell ________ .
A. sad music may help us deal with negative emotions
B. sad music can leave a person in a negative state
C. researchers are devoted to studying music
D. emotions play a vital role in our daily life
13. After listening to three pieces of music, ________ .
A. the participants explained why they listened to music
B. the participants described their feelings about the music
C. the participants made a detailed summary of the music
D. the participants got a lot of help from the happy music
14. According to the passage, to get rid of your depression, you should listen to ________ .
A. Croatian Rhapsody B. Allegro de Concierto
C. Moonlight Sonata D. The Blue Danube
15. While listening to the sad music, the participants ________ .
A. can experience the less cheerful emotions deeply
B. should keep themselves as cool as a cucumber
C. can develop both kinds of emotions unconsciously
D. should tell the difference between the two types of music

David and Roy decided to go for a bicycle ride with three other students:Robert, Helen and Betty. But Robert’s father couldn’t afford to buy a bike for him, so they were going to borrow one for him.
The students had planned to meet at 8 o’clock. But Robert, Helen and Betty were half an hour late, for they had to come a long way since they found the bridge over the stream had been washed away.
When they told the bad news to David and Roy, David said nothing and kept silent for a moment. After a while, an idea came into his mind. “Do you think we could rebuild it?”
All of them agreed and started to consider this seriously. They decided to rebuild the bridge before they went for the bicycle ride. Betty said she could ask her brother to make a plan for them.
The biggest problem was to get enough wood. The next day they visited nearly every house in the village. Mr. Robinson agreed to supply the wood so long as they did the work. Several people promised to give money if they could build a new bridge because it was a short cut for them.
The students worked for nearly a week under Mr. Robinson’s guidance. At the end of a week of hard work, the bridge was completed. They all agreed to ask Mr. Robinson to officially open the bridge. “He has helped us most.” David said.
“And tomorrow morning we can go around to all the houses,” added Roy, “and tell the people that the bridge will be officially opened at six o’clock. Then we can remind them about their promises about money.” Roy added.
“But we don’t really want that, do we?” said Robert.
“Yes,” said Helen. “We need it and I think we should collect it.” She glanced quickly at the others, who nodded.
The next day, the students visited all the houses again. They were surprised when they saw how pleased the people were with them. By two o’clock they had collected over a hundred dollars. By five o’clock, unknown to Robert, they had spent it.
Paragraph 1:
At six the students gathered at the bridge.

Paragraph 2:
David turned to Robert and said, “We have a surprise for you. Look! Look!”

【答案】范文
At six the students gathered at the bridge. Mr Robinson, accompanied by nearly forty fellow residents of their district, made a grand appearance. In a brief yet inspiring speech, he lauded the students for their arduous efforts. “And now, I hereby declare the bridge open,” he announced, “and I’ve got a delightful little surprise for you all.” He then turned to his son and accepted a small metal sign. Nimbly climbing down the bank, he firmly nailed it to the side of the bridge. It read, “Students’ Bridge.” As the neighbours applauded, the students beamed with even greater pride.
David turned to Robert and said, “We have a surprise for you. Look! Look!” Helen skillfully pushed a brand-new bike through the cheering crowd and presented it to the stunned Robert. “Now you know why we were so eager to raise that money,” she said joyfully. Robert stared in disbelief, his eyes wide with astonishment. “What an incredible surprise,” he marveled.

As reported in the open access journal Frontiers in Psychology sad music aroused contradictory emotions among the participants.
