B It was a normal day, Julia and I were working in the container checking the instruments and doing other routine operations when the phone rang. It was Ian. He wanted to know if one of us could go outside to be their polar bear guard for the next few hours. We looked at each other and it was soon decided that I would go. Julia had more work to do in the container. Obviously shooting was our last resort; there were a lot of other actions that needed to be taken beforehand in order to scare the bear away. But, if worse came to worst, we needed to be ready. The other reason for which a female “newbie” like me was allowed to guard was that I would be working at the balloon site that is the closest to the ship. This means that in case a polar bear comes we could reach the ship in just a few minutes and thus it was really unlikely that I would have to use the rifle. Being a polar bear guard is not the most exciting job out there: you have to stand in the cold, downwind from the group, from where the polar bear is likely to approach because of the smell, looking at the horizon for several hours. On the other hand, the guard job gives you a lot of time to think and reflect while staring at this breathtaking landscape. This is one of the reasons why I often volunteer to be a polar bear guard. During the last period we had several interesting observations about a big puzzle that we were trying to solve. While I was reflecting on some elements, I realized that Ian and Julia recovered the balloon, so I joined them and we headed back to the ship just in time for dinner. We stayed outside only for a couple of hours but this was enough to refresh my brain with clean Arctic air and come up with new ideas and thoughts to discuss with the other scientists on board. Similar “recreational” activities were one of the reasons for which I enjoyed so much this expedition and I will certainly miss them afterwards! 4. Why does the author guard at the balloon site? A. To admire impressive landscapes. B. To withdraw safely from here. C. To send off warning signals. D. To gather with her colleagues. 5. What does the author mention about her working place as a polar bear guard? A. It is frequently visited by polar bears. B. It is filled with various wildlife smells. C. It provides opportunities for reflection. D. It is extremely cold near the pole. 6. What does the author gain from the work shift? A. Friendship and joy. B. Confidence and courage. C. Responsibility and duty. D. Relaxation and insight. 7. What is the text most likely to be? A. A novel. B. A journal. C. A report. D. A review. C Psychologist Julian Rotter published an article in 1966, introducing one of the most significant concepts in psychology, LOC (locus of control ) (控制点). It reflects how much we expect our own behavior to affect what happens to us — rather than luck, fate, chance, or powerful others. In Rotter’s LOC test, people were asked to choose between internal and external alternatives. For example, “Many of the unhappy things in people’s lives are partly due to bad luck.” or “People’s misfortunes result from the mistakes they make.” But are we as internally controlled as we were in 1966? In February 2024 the college students of Stephen Nowicki, PhD took a test. The students’ average LOC score of 12.86 was more external than the average of 8.10 found by Rotter in 1966. In fact, his students scored more externally than the prisoners Rotter tested in 1966, who scored an average of 10.33. How can we explain the trend toward greater externality found in the general population and especially in Generation Z? One possibility is that greater externality may be a reflection of the way things are in the more complicated tech-driven world than they were in earlier times. Another more disconcerting possibility is that people in general could be underestimating the control available to them. We know that externality increases in response to disasters but the danger is that victims might remain external even though they are no longer helpless. This is especially noteworthy because individuals who do return to their original internality cope better than those who remain inappropriately external. Plentiful evidence has shown that internality is associated with more positive outcomes in areas of our lives including academic achievement and satisfaction in social activities. We need our internality. Being internal means taking responsibility for one’s actions, persisting longer, delaying rewards, gathering relevant information, and resisting pressure. Just as Rotter said, “Active steps should be taken to turn around this troubling trend because if feelings of externality continued, we may be heading for a society where each person sits back, watching the world go by.” 8. Which statement reflects an internal locus of control in Rotter’s LOC test? A. Success is the result of hard work. B. Sometimes I feel dizzy after a shower. C. Being famous is what everyone goes after. D. I will feel relieved when my problems are solved. 9. What did the test performed by Stephen Nowicki discover? A. His students are more internally controlled. B. His students are more externally controlled. C. His students rely heavily on personal responsibility. D. His students have similar LOC scores as those tested in 1966. 10. What does the underlined word “disconcerting” in paragraph 3 probably mean? d A. Encouraging. B. Reassuring. C. Confusing. D. Upsetting. 11. What does the author imply in the last paragraph? A. Externality leads to social progress. B. Personal responsibility is becoming overlooked. C. Efforts must be made to increase internality. D. Internality is the basic requirement for people. D One of the main distinctions between plants and animals is how they respond to stimuli (刺激物). Animals have neurons that transmit sensory feelings to a central nervous system. In humans, if your brain determines that those feelings are negative and dangerous, it sends a message back to their point of origin, causing you to react to avoid the continuation of that pain. Animals like us have memories that allow us to avoid future pain. Without a central nervous system plants don’t process sensations that way. But plants do react to negative or unpleasant sensations. Touch the leaves of a sensitive plant, Mimosa pudica, and it’ll close them. Cut off the branches of a shrub, and the shrub will produce a scab (痂) around the wound, and likely stimulate new growth below the cut. Plants preserve memories of these events — not in a centralized brain, but distributed throughout the plant, closer to where the memory is needed. This isn’t merely a biophysical response to stimuli. Touch the leaves of a sensitive plant repeatedly, and the plant will no longer close its leaves. It has learned the sensation isn’t a threat, and will keep that knowledge for 40 days. One of the most important and frequent inter-species relationships on Earth is the association between fungi (真菌) and plant roots — a relationship common to 90% of plant species. Through these networks, plants communicate with fungi and other plants, transferring important chemicals like nitrogen, carbon, etc. to each other and sending stress signals. Some plants also communicate using sounds. Recent studies reveal some plants emit high-frequency sound waves. Tomato and tobacco plants produce sounds during droughts or when their leaves are cut. Additionally, pea plants send their roots toward the sound of moving water — even if the sound is recorded and no water is actually present. Most of a plant’s life is lived underground. This is where plants do their thinking, in a decentralized network of sensory and memory cells. Sadly, humans prize plants primarily for their reproductive organs — their flowers, fruits, and seeds-rather than their thinking and feeling parts. Like us, they use both to survive. 12. What can we know about plants’ responses compared to animals? A. Plants feel pain in the same way as animals. B. Plants process stimuli in a distributed manner. C. Plants react faster than animals. D. Plants use sunlight for all responses. 13. What enable plants to share nutrients between each other? A. The regular stimuli B. Their distributed systems. C. The fungus-root networks. D. Their good living conditions. 14. What does the author think is a pity? A Plants’ living conditions are threatened. B. Plants’ thinking is misunderstood. C. Plants’ reproduction is declining. D. Plants’ abilities are underestimated. 15 What is the most appropriate title for the text? A. The role of fungi in plant growth B. Sensory and memory functions in plants C. The importance of plant reproductive organs D. Animals’ and plants’ different responses to pain 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 阅读下面短文, 从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Long-distance flights can feel never-ending, particularly if you don’t get any sleep. Counting down the hours or minutes until you can finally get some relief off the plane becomes an obsession (执念). And, even if you do manage to get some rest, sitting upright can harm your neck and back. ____16____ Here are some tips to help you sleep better on airplanes. ____17____ Colin Espie, a sleep expert, says you shouldn’t try to force yourself to sleep. Even though it may seem against common sense, it’s important to try and let yourself fall asleep naturally. Sleep is a natural biological process, and it is much easier to let your body naturally take over. Choose your seat carefully. If you get the chance to select your own seat, Espie says you should be choosy when it comes to where you sit. Specifically, try to secure a seat away from busy areas on the plane, such as near the service areas where flight attendants may move around at all hours. ____18____ Choose your in-flight refreshments wisely. Many frequent flyers like to bring travel snacks along, especially on long flights. However, snacks with sugar and substances like caffeine, chocolate and alcohol can all affect sleep. ____19____ However, alcohol can have a negative effect on sleep, even if it helps with the onset of sleep. ____20____ If you come prepared in the right mindset and with the right tools, catching some Zs in the air may be easier than you think. A. Keep the same sleeping schedule. B. Arrive well-rested and don’t try to force it. C. Frequent travelers agree sleeping upright is no easy task. D. You should also try to select seats with extra legroom if you can. E. Alcohol may help you fall asleep initially, which can be confusing. F. You can use various online tools to track changes in seat availability. G. In short, sleeping on a plane doesn’t have to be as bad as it may seem. 第三部分 语言运用(共两节, 满分30分) 第一节(共15小题; 每小题1分, 满分15分) 阅读下面短文, 从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳选项。 The first time I saw the word “retarded” used to describe my son, we were in the neurologist’s office and Jeffrey was seven months old. Anna loved to play the piano. She would practice every day, hoping to become a great pianist one day. But no matter how hard she tried, she felt like she was not good enough. She played in small cafes and at family gatherings, but she never felt confident in her skills. One rainy afternoon, Anna was playing the piano in a small, quiet cafe. There were only a few people there, and Anna felt sad because no one seemed to care about her music. Suddenly, an older man walked into the cafe. He had kind eyes and a gentle smile. He sat down at a table near the piano and listened. Anna noticed the man and felt a bit nervous. She continued to play, trying her best to ignore her doubts. When she finished her song, the man clapped loudly, surprising Anna. He walked over to her and said, “That was beautiful. You have a real gift.” Anna blushed and looked down. “Thank you,” she said softly. “But I’m not sure if I’m good enough to be a real pianist.” The man smiled kindly. “Everyone has doubts,” he said. “But you have something special. Don’t give up. Keep practicing, and believe in yourself. Sometimes, all we need is a little encouragement to see our true potential.” Anna felt a warmth in her heart. No one had ever said something like that to her before. She decided to take the man’s advice. She practiced even harder, playing with more passion. She started to believe in herself a little more each day. The kind man continued to visit the café and listen to Anna’s play. He always encouraged her, telling her she could achieve her dream. With his support, Anna’s playing improved greatly. People began to notice her talent, and soon, the small cafe was filled with people coming to hear her music. One day, the man gave Anna a piece of paper. “There’s a piano competition in the city,” he said. “I think you should enter. You have what it takes to win.” 注意: (1)续写词数应为150个左右; (2)请按如下格式在相应位置作答。 Anna was nervous but excited. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ The judges announced the winners, and to Anna’s surprise, she had won first place. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 全国100所名校高考模拟示范卷 按秘密级事项管理★启用前 2025年普通高等学校招生全国统一考试 英语模拟测试(七) 本试卷共120分 考试时间120分钟 注意事项: 1. 1. She realized she had done her best, and that was enough. The judges announced the winners, and to Anna’s surprise, she had won first place. Tears of joy filled her eyes as she accepted the award. She looked out into the audience and saw the kind man smiling proudly. She knew she couldn’t have done it without his encouragement. Anna’s success in the competition opened many doors for her.
