II. Grammar and vocabulary
Section A
Directions: After reading the passage below, fill in the blanks to make the passage coherent and grammatically correct. For the blanks with a given word, fill in each blank with the proper form of the given word; for the other blanks, use one word that best fits each blank.
The Trouble with Friends
On a daily basis, I teach kids. ____21____ “kids”, I mean teens to college-age, sometimes mid-twenties. Kids talk a lot about their friends, but don't usually talk about their families. Sometimes I'm taken completely by surprise when, months into our knowing each other, a student mentions ____22____ (have) a twin. I suppose hearing the constant chatter about friends has made me consider my own, and how hard it can be ____23____ (maintain) these bonds as an adult. Mostly, what I notice is that I lose more friends than I make.
An obvious reason for that is marriage. Friends get married and their spouses become their ____24____ (close) friends. My husband is now the person ____25____ I spend the most time. I tell him everything because I trust him with my thoughts, ____26____ stupid they may be. I used to be the same way with friends, but when I tell friends something now, I must accept the possibility that they ____27____ tell their spouses, who I'm friendly but not friends with. A friendship is truly strained when you don't like the spouse. Sometimes this new person is so far away from ____28____you imagined for your friend that you wonder if you knew your friend at all.
After marriage, a friend who used to discuss things with you stops doing so, and ____29____ (update) you only on definitive good news, never the bad, the ugly, or the in-progress. She saves all of that for her partner. In other words, you're no longer included in the problem-solving. Of course, some matters belong first to the marriage: the stuff of intimacy, finance, family. Increasingly, my friends leave me out of these big conversations, and vice versa, but when the outcome is certain, we do update one another, _____30_____ reminds us that we're still friends.
【答案】21. by 22. having
23. to maintain
24. closest
25. with whom
26. however
27. may##might
28. what 29. updates
30. which
本句使用了固定句型“it + be + adj.
根据上文“I tell him everything because I trust him with my thoughts”以及下文“stupid they may be”可知,上下文之间为转折关系,这里引导让步状语从句,stupid是形容词,however表示“无论多么”,引导让步状语从句时,后接形容词或副词,符合语境,故填however。
【27题详解】
考查情态动词。句意:我过去和朋友也是这样,但现在当我告诉朋友一些事情时,我必须接受他们可能会告诉他们的配偶的可能性,我和他们的配偶很友好,但不是朋友。根据下文“tell their spouses”,可知这里表示一种可能性,may/might都可以表示“可能”,故填may/might。
Section B
Directions: Fill in each blank with a proper word chosen from the box. Each word can be used only once. Note that there is one word more than you need.
A challenging B. costly C. exclusion D. guaranteed E. necessarily F. performed G. scale H. similarly I. suffering J. tracked K. centers
Is more happiness always better than less? The researchers asked college students to rate their feelings on a ____31____ from “unhappy” to “very happy” and compared the results with academic and social outcomes. Though the “very happy” participants had the best social lives, they ____32____worse in school than those who were merely “happy”.
The researchers then examined a data set from another study that rated college freshman’s “cheerfulness” and ____33____ their income nearly two decades later. They found that the most cheerful were not the highest earners. That distinction once again went to the second-highest group, which rated their cheerfulness as “above average”.
As with everything in life, happiness has its trade-offs. Pursuing happiness to the ____34____ of other goals — known as psychological hedonism (享乐主义) — not only is in vain, but may also give you a life where you do not reach your full potential, where you are unwilling to take risks, where you choose temporary pleasures over____35____ experiences that give life meaning.
The way to understand the study above is not to deny that happiness is good; rather, it is to remember that a little bit of unhappiness has benefits. When I talk with people about their fear of negative outcomes in life, their true source of fear, in many cases, ____36____ on how they will feel about having failed, not about the consequences of failure itself. This is similar to the way discomfort with uncertainty causes more anxiety than ____37____ bad news. To avoid these bad feelings, people give up all kinds of opportunities that involve the possibility of failure.
However, bringing good things into your life, whether love or career success, usually involves risk. Risk does not, of course, ____38____ make us happy. A risky life will very likely bring disappointment, but it can bring greater rewards than a life played safe, as the studies suggested.
None of this is to say that we are foolish for wanting to be happy. On the contrary, the desire for happiness is natural and normal. However, making the quest for positive feelings your highest or only goal is a ____39____ life strategy. Endless happiness is impossible to achieve, and doing so sacrifices many of the elements of a good life. As the Canadian-American psychologist Paul Bloom wrote, “It’s the____40____ we choose that affords the most opportunity for pleasure, meaning, and personal growth.”

(A)
When Olivia Munn was diagnosed with breast cancer in, 2023, she struggled even to tell her family. Her now husband, comedian John Mulaney, had to break the news to her relatives because “the words got stuck in my throat,” she says.
Later, she found in a big way. In a March 2024 Instagram post, Munn detailed her winding health journey. Just months before be r diagnosis, she was tested negative for numerous genetic signatures associated with cancer. It wasn’t until her doctor used the Tyrer-Cuzick Risk Assessment Calculator — a simple tool that concluded Munn had a 37% chance of developing breast cancer — that she pursued additional testing, which revealed fast-growing cancer in both breasts. She went through multiple surgeries.
It was because her diagnosis was so unexpected that Munn decided to speak out. “I look at videos of me laughing with my son, running around in the park, feeling and looking healthy — all the while having this really aggressive, fast-moving cancer spreading through my breasts,” she says. “I thought, ‘Man, there’s so many women out there just like me.’ They might have no idea. And it may be too late by the time they find out.”
Munn’s candor has had a tangible impact. After she came forward, the National Cancer Institute saw an increase in use of the type of screening test she took, and at least one person — journalist Alison Hall — has gone public about being diagnosed as a result. “It was everything that I had hoped would happen,” Munn says.
Although Munn, 44, is still recovering, taking a range of medications and weathering the effects of medically induced menopause (更年期), she is also casing back into work, co-starring in the forthcoming Apple TV+ drama Your Friends and Neighbors. These days, Munn says, she has a simple standard for roles: “If something comes around that makes me really happy, then I will do it.”
She’s applying the same philosophy to life. Conscious of the crucial role hormones play in her health, she’s lowering her stress levels as much as possible. In difficult situations, “the first thing I ask myself is, ‘If this stress feeds any cancer that could possibly be in my body, would it be worth it?’” Munn says. “The answer is always no.”
56. What does “the words got stuck in my throat” imply about Olivia Munn’s initial reaction to her breast cancer diagnosis?
A. She questioned her diagnosis despite the test result from her doctor.
B. She felt overwhelmed and unable to communicate her feelings with her family.
C. She was angry at her doctor for not identifying her condition earlier.
D. She was relieved to finally know the cause of her symptoms.
57. How does Olivia Munn’s description of her pre-diagnosis videos with her son contribute to the narrative of her cancer journey?
A. It emphasizes the importance of family support during illness.
B. It shows that her cancer was slow-growing and non-threatening.
C. It highlights how her healthy appearance is misleading.
D. It implies that her cancer was a result of stress from acting career.
58. The underlined word “candor” in the fourth paragraph is closest in meaning to ________.
A. openness B. severity C. tolerance D. anxiety
59. What is the best title for the passage?
A The Rising Trend of Breast Cancer Screenings.
B. How Breast Cancer Affects Munn’s Career.
C. Raising Awareness about Breast Cancer.
D. Munn Celebrates Recovery from Breast Cancer.

Her now husband, comedian John Mulaney, had to break the news to her relatives because “the words got stuck in my throat,” she says.(2023年,当奥利维亚·穆恩被诊断出患有乳腺癌时,她甚至很难告诉家人。她现在的丈夫、喜剧演员约翰·穆兰尼不得不把这个消息告诉她的亲戚,因为“话卡在喉咙里了”,她说。)”可知,奥利维亚·穆恩一开始被诊断出患有乳腺癌时,她甚至很难告诉家人,话都卡在喉咙里了,说明她感到不知所措,无法与家人沟通自己的感受。故选B项。
【57题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段““I look at videos of me laughing with my son, running around in the park, feeling and looking healthy — all the while having this really aggressive, fast-moving cancer spreading through my breasts,” she says. “I thought, ‘Man, there’s so many women out there just like me.’ They might have no idea. And it may be too late by the time they find out.”(“我看着我和儿子一起笑、在公园里跑来跑去、感觉和看起来都很健康的视频,而与此同时,这种极具侵略性、快速移动的癌症正在我的乳房中扩散,”她说。“我想,‘天哪,外面有那么多像我一样的女人。’她们可能不知道。当她们发现的时候可能已经太晚了。”)”可知,奥利维亚·穆恩描述她与儿子在诊断前的视频,强调了她健康的外表具有误导性。故选C项。
【58题详解】
词句猜测题。根据下文“After she came forward, the National Cancer Institute saw an increase in use of the type of screening test she took, and at least one person — journalist Alison Hall — has gone public about being diagnosed as a result.(在她站出来之后,国家癌症研究所看到她所接受的筛查测试类型的使用量有所增加,至少有一人——记者艾莉森·霍尔——公开了自己被诊断出患有癌症的结果。)”可知,穆恩站出来,公开了自己被诊断出患有癌症的结果,产生了切实的影响,由此推知,划线词candor意为“坦率,坦诚”,与openness意思相近。故选A项。
【59题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,结合第四段中“Munn’s candor has had a tangible impact. After she came forward, the National Cancer Institute saw an increase in use of the type of screening test she took, and at least one person — journalist Alison Hall — has gone public about being diagnosed as a result. (穆恩的坦率产生了切实的影响。在她站出来之后,国家癌症研究所看到她所接受的筛查测试类型的使用量有所增加,至少有一人——记者艾莉森·霍尔——公开了自己被诊断出患有癌症的结果。)”和最后一段中“Conscious of the crucial role hormones play in her health, she’s lowering her stress levels as much as possible. In difficult situations, “the first thing I ask myself is, ‘If this stress feeds any cancer that could possibly be in my body, would it be worth it?’” Munn says.

The English language, which is widely used around the world today, has a long and fascinating history. Its origin dates from the 5th century when Germanic tribes, such as the Angles, Saxons, and Jutes, invaded Britain. Their languages were part of a language chain that eventually led to the formation of English. These languages combined and gradually formed Old English (450-1150), which was quite different from the English we use today, with a complex inflectional system and a large number of Germanic words.
Then came the Middle English period (1150-1450). After the Norman Conquest in 1066, French became the language of the ruling class in England. As a result, a significant amount of French vocabulary merged into English. This influx of French words not only changed the vocabulary but also multiplied the complexity of the language’s grammar and usage. For example, many words related to law, government, and cuisine were borrowed from French, showing a remarkable similarity between the two languages in these fields. This led to a significant change in the English language, making it more diverse in vocabulary and grammar.
The Renaissance also had a profound impact on English. It not only introduced many Latin and Greek words but also, along with the development of printing technology, promoted the standardization of English. This made the language more stable and laid the foundation for its spread around the world. Since then, Modern English has emerged.
As time went by, the English language continued to evolve. Today, English is the most widely used language globally. It serves as an official language in more than 50 countries. In the fields of international business, diplomacy, and education, the role of English is indispensable to other languages. It is also the language of the Internet, with a large proportion of online information being in English. Additionally, English has a rich variety of dialects around the world, such as American English, British English, Australian English, etc., each with its own unique features. However, the widespread use of English has unfortunately led to the extinction of some minority languages, as more and more people choose to communicate in English.
In conclusion, the development of the English language is a long-term process influenced by various historical events and cultural exchanges. Its current status as a global language reflects its versatility and adaptability.
63. What was the most significant change to the English language during the Middle English period?
A. The simplification of its complex inflectional system.
B. The addition of a large number of French-rooted words.
C. The multiplication of Germanic words in grammar and usage.

64. According to the passage, which of the following statements is TRUE?
A. Compared with Old English, English today has a large number of Germanic words.
B. Norman rulers promoted teaching of French, making English more diverse.
C. Latin and Greek words became dominant in English in the Renaissance.
D. English now holds formal recognition in numerous countries worldwide.
65. It can be inferred from the 4th paragraph that ________.
A. evolution is called for in English despite its indispensable role
B. English is composed of a large number of Internet words
C. some languages are going extinct owing to the dominance of English

B. English: From Humble Origin to Global Domination
C. English: Obscure Origin and Gradual Growth
D. English: Modest Onset and Domestic Growth
【答案】63. B 64. D 65. C 66. B
【解析】
【导语】本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了英语的发展变化。
【63题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段中的“Then came the Middle English period (1150-1450). After the Norman Conquest in 1066, French became the language of the ruling class in England. As a result, a significant amount of French vocabulary merged into English. This influx of French words not only changed the vocabulary but also multiplied the complexity of the language’s grammar and usage.(然后是中世纪英语时期(1150-1450)。
A项与第一段中的“These languages combined and gradually formed Old English (450-1150), which was quite different from the English we use today, with a complex inflectional system and a large number of Germanic words.(这些语言结合并逐渐形成了古英语(450-1150),它与我们今天使用的英语截然不同,具有复杂的屈折系统和大量的日耳曼语单词)”表述不符,今天的英语和古英语不同,古英语有大量的日耳曼单词,所以今天的英语没有那么多日耳曼单词;B项“诺曼统治者推广法语教学,使英语更加多样化”原文未提及;C项中“拉丁和希腊词主导”与第三段中的“It not only introduced many Latin and Greek words but also, along with the development of printing technology, promoted the standardization of English.(它不仅引入了许多拉丁语和希腊语单词,而且随着印刷技术的发展,促进了英语的标准化)”所提到的“引入”不符。故选D。
【65题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段中的“However, the widespread use of English has unfortunately led to the extinction of some minority languages, as more and more people choose to communicate in English.(然而,不幸的是,随着越来越多的人选择用英语交流,英语的广泛使用导致了一些少数民族语言的灭绝)”可知,英语的广泛使用导致一些少数语言灭绝。由此推知,由于英语的主导地位,一些语言正在灭绝。故选C。
【66题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是第一段中的“Its origin dates from the 5th century when Germanic tribes, such as the Angles, Saxons, and Jutes, invaded Britain.(它的起源可以追溯到5世纪,当时盎格鲁人、撒克逊人和朱特人等日耳曼部落入侵不列颠)”、第四段中的“As time went by, the English language continued to evolve. Today, English is the most widely used language globally.(随着时间的推移,英语继续发展。如今,英语是全球使用最广泛的语言)”和最后一段“In conclusion, the development of the English language is a long-term process influenced by various historical events and cultural exchanges. Its current status as a global language reflects its versatility and adaptability.(总之,英语的发展是一个长期的过程,受到各种历史事件和文化交流的影响。它目前作为一种全球语言的地位反映了它的多功能性和适应性)”可知,文章讲述了英语从5世纪起源于日耳曼部落到占据全球主导地位的过程。由此可知,B“从卑微起源到全球主导”适合作本文最佳标题。故选B。

Directions: After reading the passage below, choose the best answers from the six statements according to what you have just read.
Directions: Read the passage carefully. Fill in each blank with a proper sentence given in the box. Each sentence can be used only once. Note that there are two more sentences than you need.
Suppose you become a leader in an organization. It’s very likely that you’ll want to have volunteers to help with the organization’s activities. To do so, it should help to understand why people undertake volunteer work and what keeps their interest in the work.
Let’s begin with the question of why people volunteer. ___67___ For example, people volunteer to express personal values related to unselfishness, to expand their range of experiences, and to strengthen social relationships. If volunteer positions do not meet these needs, people may not wish to participate. To select volunteers, you may need to understand the motivations of the people you wish to attract.
People also volunteer because they are required to do so. To increase levels of community service, some schools have launched compulsory (义务的) volunteer programs. Unfortunately, these programs can shift people’s wish of participation from an internal factor (e.g., “I volunteer because it’s important to me”) to an external factor (e.g., “I volunteer because I’m required to do so”). When that happens, people become less likely to volunteer in the future. ___68___
Once people begin to volunteer, what leads them to remain in their positions over time? To answer this question, researchers have conducted follow-up studies in which they track volunteers over time. For instance, one study followed 238 volunteers in Florida over a year. One of the most important factors that influenced their satisfaction as volunteers was the amount of suffering they experienced in their volunteer positions. ___69___ The researchers note that attention should be given to “training methods that would prepare volunteers for troublesome situations or provide them with strategies for coping with the problem they do experience”.
Another study of 302 volunteers at hospitals in Chicago focused on individual differences in the degree to which people view “volunteer” as an important social role. ___70___ Participants indicated the degree to which the social role mattered by responding to statements such as “Volunteering in Hospital is an important part of who I am.” Consistent with the researchers’ expectations, they found a positive relationship between the strength of role identity and the length of time people continued to volunteer. These results, once again, lead to definite advice: “Once an individual begins volunteering, continued efforts might focus on developing a volunteer role identity.... Items like T-shirts that allow volunteers to be recognized publicly for their contributions can help strengthen role identity”.
A. People volunteer mainly out of academic requirements.
B. People must be sensitive to this possibility when they make volunteer activities a must.
C. It was assumed that those people for whom the role of volunteer was most part of their personal identity would also be most likely to continue volunteer work.
D. Individual differences are most likely to motivate volunteers to continue their work.
E. Although this result may not surprise you it leads to important practical advice.
F. Researchers have identified several factors that motivate people to get involved.

【点睛】在六选四解题过程中,空后出现的for example和for instance往往是重要线索,因为这通常是对空处的举例说明,例如本篇第1题,根据空后的“For example, people volunteer to express personal values related to unselfishness, to expand their range of experiences, and to strengthen social relationships.”可知,例如,人们志愿表达与无私有关的个人价值观,扩大他们的经验范围,并加强社会关系,“For example”表明所提到的几个原因是对空处的举例说明,因此空处应该会提到让人们参与志愿服务的因素,故F项(研究人员发现了几个促使人们参与志愿服务的因素)符合语境。
IV. Summary Writing
71. Directions: Read the following passage. Summarize the main idea and the main point(s) of the passage in no more than 60 words. Use your own words as far as possible.
Retailers closed more than 9,000 stores in 2019. Some people call what has happened to the shopping landscape “the retail disaster.” It is easy to owe it to the rise of e-commerce, which has boomed while physical stores struggle. But this can be overstated. Online sales have grown tremendously in the last 20 years, but internet shopping still represents only 11 percent of the entire retail sales total. Collectively, three major economic forces have had an even bigger impact on physical retail than the internet has.
To begin with, we have changed where we shop — away from smaller stores like those in malls and toward stand-alone “Big Box” stores, which is a greater problem for most physical stores.
Also, rising income inequality has left less of the nation’s money in the hands of the middle class, and the traditional retail stores that aim at them have suffered. It is estimated that since 1970, the share of the nation’s income earned by families in the middle class has fallen from almost two-thirds to around 40 percent. As the concentration of income at the top rises, overall retail suffers simply because high-income people save a much larger share of their money. In the latest data, people in the top 10 percent of income saved almost a third of their income after tax, while people in the middle of the income distribution spent 100 percent of their income. Therefore, as the middle class has been squeezed and more has gone to the top, it has meant higher saving rates overall.
Lastly, we have spent proportionately less of income on things and more on services with every passing decade. Since 1960, we went from spending 5 percent of our income on health to almost 18 percent. We spend more on education, entertainment, business services and all sorts of other products that aren’t available in traditional retail stores. Over time, retailers selling things will have to run harder and harder just to stay in place.
In short, the broad forces hitting retail are more a lesson in economics than in the power of technology.

Section B
Directions: Fill in each blank with a proper word chosen from the box. Each word can be used only once. Note that there is one word more than you need.
A. challenging B. costly C. exclusion D. guaranteed E. necessarily F. performed G. scale H. similarly I. suffering J. tracked K.
III. Reading Comprehension
Section A
Directions: For each blank in the following passage there are four words or phrases marked A, B, C and D. Fill in each blank with the word or phrase that best fits the context.
Gathering her backpack for school, 14- year old Carolyn Milander burst into tears for the second time that week. “Not again, Carolyn!” her mother said, ____41____, “When you get perfect grades, you’re on a high. But when you don’t get enough sleep, you get so tired and depressed! This ____42____ cycle has got to end!” Carolyn screamed, “I’m fine, just leave me alone!” Carolyn had just started at a new secondary school and was having trouble coping with the increased expectations and pressures to perform. This type of angry interchange is all too ____43____ for today’s teens and their parents, and it’s no surprise.
____44____ watching and hoping things would improve, Carolyn’s mother carried out a bit of personal research to find out what sort of help was available.

C The multiplication of Germanic words in grammar and usage.
D. The formation of a language chain leading to Modern English.
D. English dialects share uniform features regardless of regional variations.
66. What would be the best title for the passage?
A. English: From Germanic Roots to Continental Expansion
B. English: From Humble Origin to Global Domination
C. English: Obscure Origin and Gradual Growth
D. English: Modest Onset and Domestic Growth

D Individual differences are most likely to motivate volunteers to continue their work.
E. Although this result may not surprise you, it leads to important practical advice.
F. Researchers have identified several factors that motivate people to get involved.
