Living in China, I often see elderly people doing many fun activities. They practice tai chi, sing opera, dance, and even play with swords. These activities are usually done outside and help them stay active and social. I think this is great and wish it would happen in the UK more often.
My grandma lives in a nursing home in England. She plays bingo (宾果游戏) and sometimes listens to music, but she rarely does much outside or with others. This situation is usual for many of the UK’s elderly, as there isn’t a strong community that helps them stay socially active. There’s knitting (编织) and theater, but not much dancing in the parks or opera singing. Such outdoor group activities are just not part of the culture, and I think that’s a pity.
In China, elderly people stay active and social, which is good for their health. It’s also very cheap. A professor (教授) from the University of Chicago said that dancing in parks became popular in China in the 1990s. It helped women stay healthy and make friends, which is important for fighting loneliness in old age.
In the UK, many elderly people feel lonely. They don’t have many social activities, and this makes them feel isolated (孤独的). I hope the UK and other Western countries can learn from China. I want to see elderly people in the UK enjoying their later years, staying active, and being part of a healthy community.

34. What is the writer’s wish?

The Xisha Islands are in the northwest part of the South China Sea. They are beautiful places with nice views and many resources (资源). This is how our primary school textbook describes them.
Many Chinese people know about the South China Sea and the Xisha Islands, but only a few have been there. These islands are far away and have a weak ecosystem (生态环境). Because of this, most activities there are just fishing, protecting the environment, and doing scientific study. Visitors are mainly government workers, fishermen’s relatives, and media (媒体) members.
In 2007, the Chinese government set up Sansha City on Xisha’s Yongxing Island. I once visited Yongle Islands, part of Sansha. I thought the fishermen’s homes would be simple, but they were very comfortable. The island had a vegetable garden, and green vegetables were seen on the local tables. I stayed in a hotel with a playground downstairs. After dinner, everyone got together to play games. Later, I walked along the island’s paths, enjoying the sea view and peaceful moment.
Fishermen told me they used traditional ways to fish. They knew exactly which fish could be caught because of their different sizes. As for smaller fish, fishermen released them back into the sea.
One thing that I never forgot was an outdoor movie called Island Keeper. It was about a couple who guarded (保卫) the island for 32 years. Many fishermen were moved to tears. One fisherman said as life on the island improved, his family loved to stay on the island during the fishing season. He also drove a passenger boat, so he made more money even when he was not fishing.
The careful management (管理) of the Xisha Islands limits (限制) tourism but gives job opportunities (机会) to local fishermen.

①The islands are far away. ②Not many people know the islands.
③ The ecosystem there is weak. ④ The islands are used for scientific study.
A. ①② B. ③④ C. ①③ D. ②④
43. What does the underlined word “released” in Paragraph 4 probably mean?
A. looked for B. cut…down C. took care of D. let...go
44. What can we infer from the text now?
A. Fishermen catch fish in modern ways.
B. Fishermen enjoy their life on the islands.
C. More and more visitors come to Xisha Islands now.
D. The living conditions of fishermen are poor and simple.

四、任务型阅读
阅读下列短文,根据短文中的信息完成文后表格 (每空一词)。
Which animals are smart? Your answer may be dogs, monkeys, or elephants. Now, there is one more animal that can be added to the list: sheep.
Scientists from Cambridge University said that people can educate sheep to identify (识别) familiar (熟悉的) human faces, the BBC reported.
Before testing, scientists showed the sheep pictures of four famous people, like former US president Barack Obama and British actress Emma Watson. Then the sheep went into a room with two computer screens. Each screen showed a human face. One screen showed a famous person and the other screen showed a random (随机的) person. The sheep often walked toward the screen with the famous person’s face.
After finding out the animals’ ability to identify famous people, researchers (研究人员) gave them a new task. They wanted to see if the farm animals could correctly identify the same people from different directions. The animals were still able to know them, though they were a bit slower than before.
Finally, the researchers wanted to know if the sheep could identify their trainers. Photos of their trainers were randomly shown on screens along with a number of unfamiliar faces. This time, nobody taught the sheep first, but they picked out the photos very easily.
The results show that the animals’ face-identification abilities are very close to those of monkeys and humans. Face identification is a difficult process. But sheep are very clever. When they see other sheep, they use this process to know one another.
The researchers said it might be interesting in the future to find out if sheep can identify different facial expressions made by humans.

31. How does the writer feel about elderly people’s activities in China?
A. They are boring. B. They are fun and healthy.
C. They cost too much money. D. They are only for young people.
32. Which fits the situation according to the text?
①_____
②______
③______
tai chi, opera, dancing

A. ①-a, ②-b, ③-c B. ①-b, ②-a, ③-c C. ①-c, ②-b, ③-a D. ①-b, ②-c, ③-a
33. Why does the writer talk about the professor from the University of Chicago?
A. To explain dancing in parks is new in China.
B. To express elderly people in the UK hate dancing.
C. To share Western countries have better activities.
D. To help support the fact that activities help old people.
34. What is the writer’s wish?
A. Elderly people in China can have more activities.
B. More professors can study the activities of the elderly.
C. Elderly people in the UK can have more social activities.
D. The UK and other Western countries can keep their own culture.
35. What’s the best title for the text?

It’s true: math is difficult. As a result, a lot of kids have problems learning math at some point in their lives. Use these tips and tricks to solve math problems more easily.
Practice math in everyday situations. Make math part of your daily life so you can practice it naturally. For example, if a sweater that’s usually $38 is on sale for 30% off, what is the sale price?

If you come across an easy problem, do it in your mind first before turning to a calculator (计算器).
Review (复习) math concepts every day. Practice makes perfect, and math is no exception. Set a study plan for yourself and try to review your math problems for 15 to 20 minutes per day. Your skills will build up over time, and you don’t need to try too hard!
Teach a math problem or concept to someone else. Learning by teaching someone is a great way to review concepts. Invite a friend or family member. ________ If you can’t move on, review your notes or textbook again until you can explain it clearly.

44. What can we infer from the text now?

B Fishermen enjoy their life on the islands.
