B In a bustling city far away, a middle - aged man named Mr. Thompson was in an indescribable state of turmoil. His heart was heavy with worry as he had just received the heart-wrenching news that his beloved daughter, Lily, had fallen seriously ill. Lily was hospitalized back in their hometown, and every passing second felt like an eternity to Mr. Thompson. Without a moment’s hesitation, he managed to secure the earliest flight ticket available, desperate to be by her side as quickly as possible. With his mind solely focused on reaching his daughter, he rushed to the airport. However, his nightmare seemed to compound when he arrived at the check-in counter. The airline staff informed him with great regret that his passport had expired. The color drained from his face as he realized the gravity of the situation. It was as if the world had come crashing down around him. Time was slipping through his fingers like sand, and each minute that he was delayed could mean a great deal for his daughter’s well-being. In a frantic state, he hailed a cab and sped towards the passport office. By the time he reached there, the sun had already set, and the normal working hours were long over. The usually busy office now had an eerie silence, and the dimly lit corridors seemed to echo his despair. To his utter astonishment, as he approached the relevant department, he saw a young man, Mr. Lee, still sitting at his desk. Mr. Lee had been just about to leave after a long and tiring day at work. But when he caught sight of Mr. Thompson’s distraught face and heard his desperate story, he felt a pang of sympathy. Without a second thought, he decided to stay back and assist Mr. Thompson with the complex and time-consuming passport renewal process. The renewal process was no easy feat. There were numerous forms to fill in, documents to verify, and systems to update. Mr. Lee worked meticulously, double-checking every detail to ensure there were no errors. Every now and then, he would glance at Mr. Thompson, whose face was etched with anxiety and impatience, and offer him words of comfort. After what seemed like an endless ordeal, the passport was finally renewed. Mr. Thompson was overcome with emotion. He could barely find the words to express his gratitude towards Mr. Lee. With the renewed passport in hand, he rushed back to the airport, just in time to catch his flight. As the plane took off, he looked out of the window with a mixture of relief and hope, knowing that he was one step closer to being with his daughter. 4. What was the main reason for Mr. Thompson’s anxiety? A. He had lost his job and couldn’t afford his daughter’s treatment. B. His daughter was seriously ill and he needed to get to her quickly. C. He was in debt and was worried about financial problems. D. He had an argument with his family members. 5. What happened to Mr. Thompson at the airport? A. His luggage was overweight. B. He was stopped because of security issues. C. He found out his passport had expired. D. He realized he had forgotten his daughter’s address. 6. Why was Mr. Thompson surprised when he arrived at the passport office? A. The office was in chaos. B. There was no one there. C. A young man was still working despite the late hour. D. The office was closed for renovation. 7. What did Mr. Lee do for Mr. Thompson? A. He just gave him some advice and then left. B. He stayed and carefully handled the passport renewal process. C. He drove Mr. Thompson to the airport. D. He contacted the hospital to update them on Mr. Thompson’s situation. C I decided at 10 that I was going to be a teacher because I had a burning desire for superpowers. As a boy, I could clearly see some of my teachers had extraordinary powers. There was an English teacher in fifth grade who could magically transport us to different worlds every day by telling us stories and reading to us from books we would never pick up. This was our secret and fun time because fifth graders were considered too old to have stories read out to them. It was even shocking that my teacher could see the invisible. I was one of those who lacked insight. Yet my teacher would notice me and the unspoken message in her eyes suggested that she could see me through. She had another superpower and even after four decades, I could still vividly remember her lessons about the great masters of art and great geographers, expanding our horizons. She did this even though her major was not art, nor geography. Her lessons went beyond the textbook. I knew I wanted to be one of those all-seeing ones with superpowers that made children feel safe and valued. I know being a teacher isn’t the easiest or the most financially rewarding of jobs. And there are occupational risks--your knees can become worn out from years of carrying piles of notebooks up and down the school staircase, and your voice can give in from too much talking. But despite all that, there are those choosing this cause. To them, teaching is not just a job--it is a science, an art and a craft, and it demands emotional labour and investment. All my life, for three decades now, I’ve gone to work early each day with a spring in my step. Occasionally, I meet my former students. Their obvious love for me and fond memories of our time together are my rewards. When I meet others who are thirsty for superpowers, like the brand new teacher struggling to perfect her skills with a brave face on, or the one in a remote, rural school travelling 70 kilometers each day just for his pupils, I feel proud to belong to the same group. 8. What can be inferred about the stories from paragraph 2? A. They were told in a magic way. B. They were written by the teacher. C. They contained some students’ fun secrets. D. They left the students with happy memories. 9. Which of the following best describes the English teacher? A. Ambitious and generous. B. Determined and wealthy. C Caring and modest. D. Knowledgeable and observant. 10. What do we know about the author as a teacher? A. He suffered a lot in his knees and voice. B. He thought teaching was more than spreading knowledge. C. He had some ideas of how to be a teacher at a young age. D. He was rewarded with much money for his devotion at school. 11. What can be concluded about being a teacher from the text? A. Learning without a teacher is hard to gain. B. In scholarship there is no difference of age. C. Teachers lead the door, progress in the individual. D. With one thousand times for the peach garden sweet. D On average, American kids ages 3 to 12 spent 29 hours a week in school, eight hours more than they did in 1981. They also did more household work and participated in more of such organized activities as soccer and ballet. Involvement in sports, in particular, rose almost 50% from 1981 to 1997: boys now spend an average of four hours a week playing sports; girls log hall that time. All in all, however, children’s leisure time dropped from 40% of the day in 1981 to 25%. “Children are affected by the same time crunch that affects their parents,” says Sandra Hofferth, who headed the recent study of children’s timetable. A chief reason, she says, is that more mothers are working outside the home. (Nevertheless, children in both double-income and “male breadwinner” households spent comparable amounts of time interacting with their parents 19 hours and 22 hours respectively. In contrast, children spent only 9 hours with their single mothers.) All work and no play could make for some very messed-up kids. “Play is the most powerful way a child explores the world and learns about himself,” says T. Berry Brazelton, professor at Harvard Medical School Unstructured play encourages independent thinking and allows the young to negotiate their relationships with their peers, but kids ages 3 to 12 spent only 12 hours a week engaged in it. The children sampled spent a quarter of their rapidly decreasing “free time” watching television. But that, believe it or not, was one of the findings parents might regard as good news. If they’re spending less time in front of the TV set, however, kids aren’t replacing it with reading. Despite efforts to get kids more interested in books, the children spent just over an hour a week reading. Let’s face it, who’s got the time? 12. What does the underlined phrase “the same time crunch” in Paragraph 2 refer to? A Children have little time to play with their parents. B. Both parents and children suffer from lack of leisure time. C. Children are not taken good care of by their working parents. D. Both parents and children have trouble managing their time. 13. In the author’s opinion, a child develops better if . A. he has plenty of time reading and studying B. he is free to interact with his working parents C. he is left to play with his peers in his own way D. he has more time participating in school activities 14. What does the author worry about American kids? A. They are increasingly ignored by their working mothers. B. They are engaged in more and more structured activities. C. They are spending more and more time watching TV. D. They are involved less and less in household work. 15. What can we conclude from the text? A. Extracurricular activities promote children’s intelligence. B. Most parents believe reading to be beneficial to children. C. Efforts to get kids interested in reading have been fruitful. D. Most children will turn to reading with TV sets switched off. The 2024 Paris Olympic Games concluded on Aug 11, showcasing the impressive talents of China’s Generation Z athletes across various sports. I wasn't in the mood for being onstage. “Kate, come here,” my mom called from down the hall. I found my mom outside the bathroom, holding a wet book. Henry, my new stepbrother, was nearby, working on a complicated string knot, as usual. My mother gave the book a shake. “Henry's book is in the bathtub. Did you put it there?” “Not on purpose,” I said. “It was already on the edge, and it happened to fall in when I stepped out of the tub.” My mother glared at me, something she never did before I had a stepfamily. “You could have picked it up,” she said. "That would have been the kind thing to do.” As Henry walked ahead of us to the car, my mom took me aside. "This is our corner of the world now, Kate," she said. "Let's try to make it a good one.” The community theater was busy when we got there. Theater used to be what my mom and I did together—one play a year for our special thing. With Henry involved, it didn't seem so special anymore. Henry's dad, who had arrived earlier to help set up, was already in costume. “Dear children,” he called in a theatrical voice, “Come to Father.” I thought he was a nice guy even before he and my mother started dating. Unfortunately, I now had a stepbrother to deal with. Soon, it was curtain time. I peeked out at the audience and noticed that the darkened theatre was full. My heart beat faster. I forgot my annoyance at Henry as the lead actress sang, “The hills are alive with the sound of music!” Nothing compared to show nights. Before long, it was my turn. I went onstage, song book in hand. As we kids lined up before Henry's dad, who was playing the part of our father, I realized how poorly I'd tied the string on my skirt which was over leggings. I should have asked my mom for help. And then, suddenly, the string knot on my skirt came untied. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ I shot Henry a grateful glance ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$ 徐州市树恩高中2024—2025学年第二学期中学情调研 高二年级英语试卷 注意事项: 1. 1. C. C. Caring and modest. D. Knowledgeable and observant. 10. What do we know about the author as a teacher? A. He suffered a lot in his knees and voice. B. He thought teaching was more than spreading knowledge. C He had some ideas of how to be a teacher at a young age. 8. D 9. D 10. B 11. To them, teaching is not just a job--it is a science, an art and a craft, and it demands emotional labour and investment.(我知道当老师不是最容易的工作,也不是最有经济回报的工作。 对他们来说,教学不仅仅是一份工作,它是一门科学、一门艺术和一门工艺,它需要情感劳动和投资)”以及最后一段“Their obvious love for me and fond memories of our time together are my rewards. When I meet others who are thirsty for superpowers, like the brand new teacher struggling to perfect her skills with a brave face on, or the one in a remote, rural school travelling 70 kilometers each day just for his pupils, I feel proud to belong to the same group.(他们对我明显的爱和我们在一起的美好回忆是我的回报。 D On average, American kids ages 3 to 12 spent 29 hours a week in school, eight hours more than they did in 1981. 12 What does the underlined phrase “the same time crunch” in Paragraph 2 refer to? A. Children have little time to play with their parents. B 13. C 14. B 15. 根据第一段中“All in all, however, children’s leisure time dropped from 40% of the day in 1981 to 25%.(然而,总的来说,儿童的休闲时间从1981年的40%下降到了25%) ”;第二段中“A chief reason, she says, is that more mothers are working outside the home.(她说,一个主要原因是越来越多的母亲在外工作)”以及“In contrast, children spent only 9 hours with their single mothers.(相比之下,孩子们和单身母亲在一起的时间只有9个小时)”可知,父母和孩子都缺少闲暇时间,故划线部分的意思是“父母和孩子都缺少闲暇时间”。 根据第三段中“Play is the most powerful way a child explores the world and learns about himself,(玩耍是孩子探索世界和了解自己最有力的方式)”和“play encourages independent thinking and allows the young to handle their relationships with their peers(玩耍鼓励独立思考,并允许年轻人处理与同龄人的关系)”由此可知,根据作者的观点,如果让孩子以自己的方式和同龄人一起玩,他会发展得更好。 根据第三段中““Play is the most powerful way a child explores the world and learns about himself,” says T. The reasons behind this are obvious. Also, the charm of Chinese culture, art, and literature has captured the hearts of many foreigners. Learning Chinese allows them to better appreciate and understand those special things. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ I shot Henry a grateful glance. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】 And then, suddenly, the string knot on my skirt came untied. Extremely worried that I’d lose face in front of all the audience, I could feel my heart pounding. With both my hands holding the song book, I was at a loss what to do, when Henry, who noticed my embarrassment, came to my aid. He fixed my costume, tying the string with a fancy knot. He made me a joke about me “not” knowing knots. At this, the audience broke into laughter, but it felt OK. I shot Henry a grateful glance. He smiled as if my mistake was no big deal. I got through the rest of the play successfully, still a shock in my mind. After we’d bowed and moved offstage, I went straight to Henry and tapped him on the arm. “Thanks,” I said genuinely. He grinned, “Knot a problem.” Maybe it won’t be so bad to have a new person in my corner of the world after all. 词汇激活 ①行为类 ②丢人:lose face / make a scene ③注意到:notice/ take notice of ④帮助某人:come to one's aid / give sb. a hand 情绪类 ①尴尬:embarrassment / awkwardness ②成功:successfully / triumphantly 【点睛】[高分句型1] Extremely worried that I’d lose face in front of all the audience, I could feel my heart pounding.
