Four online anger management classes
• Online Therapy
Online Therapy helps people with anger problems, as well as other areas like stress, social anxiety and relationship problems. Its therapists (治疗师) are online eight hours per day Monday through Friday. For privacy (隐私) purposes, you can use a false name to get services. By spending $47.96 a week, you can access 25 worksheets and daily replies from a therapist in a week.
• Undemy
Anger Management Techniques That Actually Work is a course offered on Udemy and consists of three hours of videos, two articles, and extra resources. In this course, you’ll learn whatever can make you angry, and how to calm down and create deep relaxation. The course costs $139.99 but does sometimes go on sale at a fairly low price.
• Betterhelp
Betterhelp is an online therapy website that treats various problems, including anger problems. To begin with, you’ll need to complete a brief survey on the problems you’re experiencing. Betterhelp will then match you to a therapist. Afterward, you’ll be assigned (指定) to an appointed chat room where you’ll communicate privately with your therapist. It’s $65 a week for the first month. After the first month, it will be $60 to $80 per week.
• The Logan Group Int.
The Logan Group Int. offers various classes, including anger management classes. There’re nine different hourly anger management courses that range from 4 to 30 hours. Hourly classes range from $24.95 to $159.95, depending on the length.
For further information, you can click here.
1. What is different from the other three websites about Online Therapy?
A. People can get services during weekends. B. People can get free chat with a therapist.
C. People can refuse to offer their real identities. D. People will feel more relaxed online.
2. Where can people who need services get a discounted course sometimes available?
A. on Online Therapy. B. on the Logan Group Int.. C. on Betterhelp. D. on Undemy.
3. How much will you pay if you are assigned to an appointed chat room with your therapist for two months?
A. $540. B. $480. C. $640. D. $680.
根据•Online Therapy部分中的For privacy (隐私) purposes, you can use a false name to get services.
The course costs $139.99 but does sometimes go on sale at a fairly low price.
3. A。 Afterward, you’ll be assigned to an appointed chat room where you’ll communicate privately with your therapist. It’s $65 a week for the first month. After the first month, it will be $60 to $80 per week.
本题中的同义句表达:use a false name→refuse to offer their real identities;sometimes go on sale at a fairly low price→get a discounted

【来源】https://www.foxnews.com/lifestyle/new-jersey-police-officers-rescue-girl-from-doll-stroller-buy-her-a-new-one
Two New Jersey police officers went the extra mile after they rescued a little girl who got stuck in one of her toys.
On Tuesday, 4-year-old Yasmeen “Nina” Saleh got her doll stroller stuck around her waist, so her mother, Iman Jabara, 43, called for help around 11 a.m., according to NJ.com.
Paramus Police Department Officers Robert Sobocinski and Ben Fox arrived at the scene and soon realized they would have to break the stroller to get it off the little girl.
A video of the rescue shows Sobocinski and Fox trying to figure out the best way to remove the toy.
In moments where Nina gets upset and starts to cry, the officers talk with her to calm her down.
At one point, one of the officers even offered to hold Nina’s hand while he was trying to find where to break the stroller without hurting her.
Finally, the officers are able to break a piece of plastic on one of the stroller’s handles and free Nina from the toy.
“Thank you so much,” Nina says as she steps out of the stroller.
“You’re very welcome,” one of the officers responds, later adding: “You’re not supposed to wear your stroller.”
However, that wasn’t the end of the story. On their lunch break, Sobocinski and Fox went to Target and bought the same type of doll stroller, according to NJ.com.
Sobocinski delivered the replacement toy to Nina the same day, the website reported.
"I felt like it was the right thing to do," Sobocinski told local website Daily Voice.
"This is a human job,” he added. “When you're dealing with people, everything is different.”
1.What does the underlined phrase “went the extra mile” mean in the first paragraph?
A. continued to go more miles B. did better than expected
C. made efforts to go further D. did some useless things
2.What did the police officers do when they rescued the little girl?
A. they talk with her mother to calm her down.
B. they found the best way to remove the toy without breaking it.
C. they broke a piece of plastic on one of the stroller’s handles.
D. they held Nina’s hands to make her still.
3. Why did the police officers buy the same type of doll stroller for the little girl?
A. because they broke the doll stroller B. because they liked the little girl
C. because they tried to do their job better D. because Nina got upset and started to cry
4. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?
A. Nina, a rescued little girl B. How to rescue the little girl
C. Robert Sobocinski and Ben Fox, two heroes D. Police officers rescue a girl from a doll stroller
Two New Jersey police officers went the extra mile after they rescued a little girl who got stuck in one of her toys. However, that wasn’t the end of the story. On their lunch break, Sobocinski and Fox went to Target and bought the same type of doll stroller, according to NJ.com.
Finally, the officers are able to break a piece of plastic on one of the stroller’s handles and free Nina from the toy.
However, that wasn’t the end of the story. On their lunch break, Sobocinski and Fox went to Target and bought the same type of doll stroller和文章最后一句"This is a human job,” he added. “When you're dealing with people, everything is different.”可知推知:这两位警察以人为本,既把小女孩救出,又不让小女孩失望,给她买了新的玩具婴儿车。故选C。
4.D主旨要义题。根据全文内容可知,文章主要讲述了两位警察救出小女孩的故事。所以,D. Police officers rescue a girl from a doll stroller全面地涵盖了文章内容,A、B选项以偏概全,C选项内容过大。故选D。

Passage 1
An internationally praised cultural thing has introduced the attractive tale of Sun Wukong to audiences worldwide. But for Ghaffar Pourazar, a British-American dual citizen living in California, this legendary figure has been a part of his identity for decades.
Pourazar’s lifelong passion for Peking Opera began by chance. In 1993, Pourazar attended a performance at London’s Queen Elizabeth Hall and was instantly captured. He went backstage right after the show and made friends with the Chinese performers. With their help, Pourazar was enrolled at an opera school. Just three months later, he left his life in Britain behind and moved to Beijing to train in the martial roles of the art.
Starting as an adult was not easy, as Peking Opera is a complex mixture of vocal performance, mime, martial arts, dance and acrobatics. In addition to the physical demands, mastering the Chinese language posed another problem. “I was constantly reciting the subtitles and songs, whether I was eating, bathing, walking, or even dreaming,” Pourazar said.
Pourazar believes that great art transcends (超越) languages. Over the years, he has devoted himself to introducing Peking Opera and Sun Wukong to international audiences. He has also been teaching courses and organizing workshops in the United-States, bringing Peking Opera to curious Western learners. To better connect with Western audiences and learners, he adapted some classic plays such as The Monkey King: Uproar in Heaven into English versions and he also adapted Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream into Poking Opera.
In recognition of his contributions, Pourazar received the Great Wall Friendship Award from the Beijing government in 2014. “Cultural exchange should be reciprocal (互惠的). I aim to blend my expertise in opera with my multicultural background to create enriching artistic experiences for the audiences,” said Pourazar.
1.What is the author’s intention of writing paragraph 1?
A.To prove Ghaffar Pourazar’s achievement.
B.To introduce a cultural influence on an individual.
C.To explain the cultural significance of Sun Wukong.
D.To highlight the fascination of ancient Chinese tales.
2.What do we know about Pourazar’s experience of learning Peking Opera?
A.Language was a significant barrier for him.
B.The performers he met backstage taught him the art.
C.Queen Elizabeth made him interested in Peking Opera.
D.His enthusiasm for Peking Opera started at an early age.
3.Why did Pourazar adapt Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream into Peking Opera?
A.To show off his talent in adapting different plays.
B.To add more complexity to traditional opera forms.
C.To prove that Peking Opera is superior to other art forms.
D.To make Peking Opera more accessible to Western audiences.
4.Which of the following words best describe Pourazar?
A.Determined and creative.
B.Passionate and reserved.
C.Humorous and charming.
D.Traditional and cautious.

根据第一段“An internationally praised cultural thing has introduced the attractive tale of Sun Wukong to audiences worldwide. But for Ghaffar Pourazar, a British-American dual citizen living in California; this legendary figure has been a part of his identity for decades.
根据第三段的“In addition to the physical demands, mastering the Chinese language posed another problem. “I was constantly reciting the subtitles and. songs, whether I was eating, bathing, walking, or even dreaming,” Pourazar said. (除了对身体素质的要求之外,掌握中文也成了另一个难题。“不管是吃饭、洗澡、走路,甚至是做梦的时候,我都在不停地背诵台词和唱段。” 普拉扎尔说道)”可知,语言对Pourazar来说是一个很大的障碍。故选 A。
根据第四段的“To better connect with Western audiences and learners, he adapted some classic plays such as The Monkey King: Uproar in Heaven into English versions and he also adapted Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream into Peking Opera. (为了更好地与西方观众和学习者建立联系,他将一些经典剧目,如《大闹天宫》改编成英文版,还把莎士比亚的《仲夏夜之梦》改编成了京剧)”可知,他进行这些改编是为了更好地与西方观众和学习者建立联系,也就是让京剧对西方观众来说更易于理解和接受。故选D。
4.推理判断题。根据第二段的“Just three months later, he left his life in Britain behind and moved to Beijing to train in the martial roles of the art. (仅仅三个月后,他就告别了英国的生活,搬到北京,去学习这门艺术中的武打角色)”以及第三段“Starting as an adult was not easy, as Peking Opera is a complex mixture of vocal performance, mime, martial arts, dance and acrobatics. In addition to the physical demands, mastering the Chinese language posed another problem. “I was constantly reciting the subtitles and songs, whether I was eating, bathing, walking, or even dreaming,” Pourazar said. (作为一个成年人开始学习京剧并非易事,因为京剧是一种集演唱、默剧表演、武术、舞蹈和杂技于一体的复杂艺术形式。除了对身体素质的要求之外,掌握中文也成了另一个难题。“不管是吃饭、洗澡、走路,甚至是做梦的时候,我都在不停地背诵台词和唱段。”普拉扎尔说道)”可知,他很有决心。根据第四段的“To better connect with Western audiences and learners, he adapted some classic plays such as The Monkey King: Uproar in Heaven into English versions and he also adapted Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream into Peking Opera. (为了更好地与西方观众和学习者建立联系,他将一些经典剧目,如《大闹天宫》改编成英文版,还把莎士比亚的《仲夏夜之梦》改编成了京剧)”可知,他改编经典剧目,体现了他的创新。所以普拉扎尔既有决心又有创新精神。故选A。

Marley Dias is the promising social activist behind #1000BlackGirlBooks. Since birth, Marley has been deeply involved in the world of social activism, surrounded by a village of caring, concerned, active adults and children dedicated to service to humanity.
When she was 5 years old, her mother, Dr Janice Johnson Dias, co-founded the GrassROOTS Community Foundation(GCF), a public health and social action organization dedicated to the support and authority of people who live in poor communities. Her father, Scott Dias, is a real estate analytical geographer. Both of them have been instrumental in developing Marley’s understanding of key social justice issues and commitment to social change.
When she became disappointed by a lack of black female role models in her school books — and her mother asked her what she was going to do about it — she knew exactly how to respond.
With the help of GCF, Marley launched the #1000BlackGirlBooks drive in November 2015, using the power of social media to reach a large audience. The goal was to collect 1, 000 books featuring black female protagonists (主人公). The story became popular and was picked up by media outlets around the world as well as bloggers, schools, youth-focused organizations and thousands of individuals who wanted to participate in the project.
Having collected over 8,000 books, Marley went beyond her original goals. Later, Marley and GCF donated the majority of the books to Retreat School in the Parish of Saint Mary, Jamaica, where her mother grew up. The remaining books went to local elementary schools, including The Henry C. Lea School in Philadelphia, Speedway Academies in Newark, New Jersey and St. Cloud Elementary in West Orange, New Jersey, where she was first inspired to launch the movement.
Marley is using her voice to advocate social justice, a commitment reflected by her ambitious life goals: she dreams of founding and editing her own magazine, and plans to use media to promote positive messages and sustain more socially conscious pop culture.
1.What influenced Marley’s later life choice?
A.Her village’s tradition. B.Her parents’ expectations.

At 17, Toronto’s Sheriauna Haase has already carved an extraordinary path as a world-class paraathlete, dancer, and actress. In November 2023, she secured dual bronze medals in the 100m and 200m races at Santiago’s Parapan American Games — a striking achievement for a teen who began paraathletics training just one year earlier. Born with a congenital limb reduction (先天性肌肉萎缩), Haase credits her success to resilience (复原力), self-belief, and the transformative power of support.
Haase’s athletic success is extended by her vibrant artistic pursuits. A dancer since age two, Haase channels self-expression through movement, landing roles in TV series like Circuit Breakers and The Next Step. Through acting, she advocates for disability representation, transforming dance into a celebration of identity, empowering her to accept her uniqueness.
Childhood bullying (欺凌) once shook her confidence, but her family, especially her mother, became her anchor. “They taught me to love myself as I am,” she says. This self-acceptance fueled her determination to master ballet routines and sprinting techniques alike.
Guided by coach Bob Westman, Athletics Canada’s lead para coach, Haase shaped her raw talent into medal-winning precision within two months. Westman, with over a decade of Paralympian training experience, praised her “focus, drive, and maturity”.
Now an ambassador for Holland Bloorview Children’s Rehabilitation Hospital, Haase champions inclusivity, inspiring others to accept their potential. Coach Westman predicts she’ll become a household name, not only for her athletic excellence but for her infectious enthusiasm for life. Her story highlights the power of self-love, support, and an unyielding spirit, urging others to celebrate uniqueness and unlock their boundless potential. “I want people to feel empowered,” she affirms.

Passage 4
Across the road from my old high school, on a hill is a water tower. Each year the seniors will secretly go up to it one night and write down the year of their graduation in huge numbers. This year, as I was driving back from the post office, I looked up at the water tower and was shocked. There was a huge number 24 on it. That couldn’t be right. When I graduated, there was a huge number 84 on it. It couldn’t be 40 years since I graduated from high school. Surely I wasn’t that old. I sometimes still felt like I had an 18-year-old inside me. Where had all the years gone?
40 years had flown by. As I drove home, waves of memories washed over me. There was the fun and hard work that had been my college years. There was the early years of struggle as a young husband and father just trying to make enough money to make ends meet. There were tears and pains when my wife and I learned the first one and then both of our sons suffered from autism (孤独症). There were the years raising my children and learning so much about love, laughter, and life from them. There was delight and pride in seeing my daughter graduate from the same high school and college that I did. It was such a glorious memory full of love, fear, joy, pain, struggles and triumphs.
I doubt I will get another 40 years of memories here. But I am determined to make the ones I do get as beautiful, loving, and joyous as possible. I want to share all the love I can, create all the joy I can, help all the people I can, and make the world a better place every chance I can. I know in the end those numbers on the water tower don’t really matter. Life does not end here. It goes on forever. And the best part is yet to come.

Passage 5
Soon after Mr. & Mrs. Bacchus started farming their little patch of land, they faced a major problem — a plague of birds fed on their precious crops. Then, a man stopped on the road outside their house, and asked the couple if he could take photographs of the birds on the property. Afterwards, he suggested that instead of trying to get rid of the birds, they should instead learn to live alongside them, and Maraksacha Reserve was born.
Today, the couple credit this man, the celebrated bird photographer Manu Espinosa, with changing their lives, and helping them persuade others of the vital importance of conservation in this region.
Birding tourism is flourishing in Ecuador, with increasing numbers of specialist tour groups. Ecuador contains a variety of ecosystems at differing elevations, which helps explain why it’s among the top 10 countries in the world for bird diversity. The country is home to over 1,600 bird species — nearly double the number found in all of Europe — within an area just slightly larger than the UK.
As the business of birding grows, more and more farmers are switching their land from agriculture to bird reserves, benefiting not just the birds, but the country’s economy too. One notable example is the Ajila family, who have devoted themselves to preserving the long-wattled umbrellabird. On his land near Recinto, landowner Luis Ajila has switched from dairy farming to conservation, replanting trees and promoting the site to wildlife tourists — work that he says is a better livelihood than farming.
“Wildlife tourism is much more profitable than farming, but that wasn’t our only motivation,” says Luis Jr., Ajila’s son. “We aimed to protect not just the umbrellabird, but all the unique wildlife here, safeguarding them for future generations.”
Since 2005, Angel Paz has transformed his former dairy farm into a bird reserve. At first, things didn’t go to plan: it took a month for the first visitor to arrive, and he paid just $10 for a four-hour tour. Since then, however, thousands of people have made the pilgrimage. “I have protected my home and its birdlife for almost two decades, and finally watched the wildlife — and the people who visit — flourish,” Angel Paz says.
1.What advice did the photographer give to the couple?
A.Photographing the birds. B.Coexisting with the birds.
C.Protecting their precious crops. D.Taking care of their property.
2.What is paragraph 3 of the text mainly about?
A.How Ecuador is geographically unique.
B.What distinguishes Ecuador’s biodiversity.
C.What makes Ecuador a birding destination.
D.How birding tourism is operated in Ecuador.
3.What have the Ajila family achieved?
A.Helping other farmers shake off poverty.
B.Combining profitability with sustainability.
C.Applying new technology in modern farming.
D.Changing the landscapes of their residential areas.
4.What can we learn from Ángel Paz’s story?
A.Well begun is half done.
B.It takes time to bear fruit.
C.The early bird catches the worm.
D.The secret to success is adaptability.
由第一段中“Afterwards, he suggested that instead of trying to get rid of the birds, they should instead learn to live alongside them, and Maraksacha Reserve was born. (后来,他(摄影师)建议,与其试图赶走这些鸟,不如学会和它们一起生活,于是马拉克萨查保护区就诞生了)”可知,摄影师建议这对夫妇与鸟类共存。故选B项。
2.主旨大意题。由第三段“Birding tourism is flourishing in Ecuador, with increasing numbers of specialist tour groups. Ecuador contains a variety of ecosystems at differing elevations, which helps explain why it’s among the top 10 countries in the world for bird diversity. The country is home to over 1,600 bird species — nearly double the number found in all of Europe — within an area just slightly larger than the UK.
由第四段中“On his land near Recinto, landowner Luis Ajila has switched from dairy farming to conservation, replanting trees and promoting the site to wildlife tourists — work that he says is a better livelihood than farming. (在累西托附近的土地上,土地所有者路易斯·阿吉拉(Luis Ajila)已经从奶牛养殖转向了保护,重新种植了树木,并向野生动物游客推广了该地——他说这项工作比农业更能维持生计)”和第五段中Luis Jr., Ajila’s son说的话“Wildlife tourism is much more profitable than farming, but that wasn’t our only motivation (野生动物旅游比农业更有利,但这不是我们唯一的动机)”“We aimed to protect not just the umbrellabird, but all the unique wildlife here, safeguarding them for future generations. (我们的目标不仅是保护雨伞鸟,还要保护这里所有独特的野生动物,为子孙后代保护它们)”可知,Ajila家族将农场转为保护区,既保护伞鸟(长须伞鸟)又通过生态旅游获利,Ajila的儿子明确提到“旅游比农业更盈利,但保护动机同样重要”,体现经济与生态可持续性的结合。故选B项。
4.推理判断题。由最后一段中“At first, things didn’t go to plan: it took a month for the first visitor to arrive, and he paid just $10 for a four-hour tour. Since then, however, thousands of people have made the pilgrimage. “I have protected my home and its birdlife for almost two decades, and finally watched the wildlife — and the people who visit — flourish,” Angel Paz says.

Climate change is increasingly damaging the U.N.’s most cherished heritage sites, a leading conservation agency warned Wednesday, reporting that Australia’s Great Barrier Reef and dozens of other natural wonders are facing severe threats.
Climate change that has led to shrinking glaciers, increasing fires, floods and droughts, and the bleaching of coral reefs are among the troubles facing 83 of the 252 World Heritage Sites listed by UNESCO, the U.N.’s cultural agency.
Sixteen World Heritage sites have worsened since the last World Heritage Outlook was released three years ago, while only eight improved, said the International Union for Conservation of Nature, made up of governments and civil society groups and advises UNESCO on natural threats to those sites.
“Natural World Heritage sites are amongst the world’s most precious places, and we owe it to future generations to protect them,” IUCN Director-General Bruno Oberle said. “Climate change is wreaking (havoc) on natural World Heritage, from shrinking glaciers to coral bleaching to increasingly frequent and severe fires and droughts.”
The report says the Great Barrier Reef, where ocean warming, acidification and extreme weather have added to the coral decline and shrinking marine species populations, were one of four sites in Australia under “very high” threat.
The islands of protected areas in the Gulf of California in Mexico have also entered the “critical” category in the listing. Spain’s Garajonay National Park, Olympic National Park in the United States, and Mexico’s Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve are among those under “very high” threat, the new report said.
It said while 63% of the heritage sites are classified as “good” or “good with some concerns,” 30% are of “significant concern” and 7% are in “critical” shape.
In a difference from the previous two IUCN reports, climate change has exceeded “invasive alien species” — such as when foreign rodents, fish or plants are transplanted, accidentally or not, to new environments — as the most potent threat against such sites.
Human activities like tourism, hunting and fishing, and livestock grazing have also had an impact.

Off-campus housing is not common at Middlebury College. With all the amenities (便利设施) a student could want offered on campus, many students see no reason to find a rental on their own in the town of Middlebury. However, the number of students who choose to pursue off-campus housing is rising, according to Associate Dean of Students for Residential and Student Life Doug Adams.
Adams said that a highly active academic scene on campus is central to the College’s identity. “Middlebury is a residential college. As such, student life happens on the campus — classes, dining, athletics, events, etc.,” he added. “This is a core element to the College’s mission where learning happens both inside and outside the classroom.”
Nevertheless, the residential experience may be both a blessing and a curse. “Students who live off campus are sometimes seeking distance from the noise of campus living,” said Adams. “Other reasons cited by students include a desire to live closer to the local community; a change from living on campus; wanting to live on their own. Off-campus living can offer more variety in terms of housing options — apartments, houses — as well as the option to live off the College meal plan. Students will often say that they are looking for a ‘homey’ experience.
Anna Stevens, a senior applying for off-campus housing, said the attractions of the residential college experience fade slightly by senior year. “Living in dormitories was fun for my first two years because there seemed to always be people around,” she said. “But, as we got older, my friends and I no longer wanted to live with people and we wanted to be able to have gatherings without considering the other residents, public safety, etc.”
However, moving off campus can come with its headaches. Obviously, expenses such as rent and transportation come into play, as well as a new set of rules regarding living next to non-student neighbors.
1. What can we know from the first paragraph?
A. Off-campus housing is not common at every college.
B. Middlebury College offers none of amenities every student wants.
C. Nowadays more students choose to enjoy off-campus housing.
D. Many students don’t have money to find a rental on their own.
2. What can living off campus give students according to the third paragraph?
A. A sense of looking for a homey experience.
B. A sense of living farther from the local community.
C. A sense of living near the noise of campus living.
D. A sense of spending a lot of money on their own.
3. What is Anna Stevens?
A. An officer of the school. B. A higher grade student.
C. An old woman. D. A mother of a girl.
4. What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A. You’ll need tips for living off campus.
B. Living off campus is a wonderful experience.
C. Living on campus doesn’t mean complete freedom.
D. Off-campus housing also has some trouble for the students.

For almost two centuries, greenhouse gas emissions have climbed steadily as humans have burned increasing amounts of oil, gas and coal. Now, climate scientists believe those emissions may finally be reaching a peak.
Thanks to the rapid growth of renewable energy, global emissions from fossil fuels could soon start to decline. The long-awaited peak is a key milestone in the effort to limit how hot the planet will get. Studies show emissions must peak and then rapidly decline to limit impacts like more intense heat waves and storms.
Many climate researchers supposed that annual emissions could fall in 2024, indicating global emissions had already peaked. But a new study finds emissions from burning fossil fuels are still likely to increase slightly this year, driven by growing demand for electricity.
Global leaders are currently discussing efforts to cut emissions at the COP29 climate summit in Baku, Azerbaijan. A decline in emissions could be a sign that the negotiations (谈判) are finally having an effect. Even when emissions start to fall, the Earth will still be on track for extreme impacts from climate change. Any added greenhouse gases will keep warming the planet. Emissions would need to be cut roughly in half by 2035 to limit warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius, the key benchmark (基准) countries agreed to pursue in climate negotiations.
The growing supply of solar and wind energy has begun to displace fossil fuels, but so far in 2024, it’s been counteracted (抵消) by a growing need for electricity. Economies are growing and airline and shipping traffic is on the rise. The increased use of artificial intelligence also requires intensive amounts of electricity to run data centers. Severe heat waves around the globe this year also raised the demand for air conditioning, a sign of how worsening climate impacts can make it even harder to cut emissions.
Luckily, we are still, to some extent, masters of our fates and we can control how much warming there is.
1.What does the “milestone” refer to in the second paragraph?
A.The rapid growth of renewable energy.
B.The peak of greenhouse gas emissions.
C.The decline in global temperatures.
D.The increase in fossil fuel usage.
2.How does the author think of the negotiations at the COP29 climate summit?
A.They have already achieved significant results.
B.They are opposed by major global leaders.
C.They are a waste of time and resources.
D.They may start to have a positive impact.
3.What makes it harder to cut emissions?
A.The growing need for electricity.
B.The increasing use of renewable energy.
C.The decline in fossil fuel supply.
D.The decrease in airline and shipping traffic.
4.What is the author’s attitude towards limiting climate change?
A.Objective B.Negative. C.Indifferent. D.Positive.
【答案】1.B 2.D 3.A 4.D
根据文章第二段“Thanks to the rapid growth of renewable energy, global emissions from fossil fuels could soon start to decline. The long-awaited peak is a key milestone in the effort to limit how hot the planet will get.(多亏了可再生能源的迅速发展,全球化石燃料的排放量可能很快就会开始下降。这个人们期待已久的峰值是努力控制地球升温程度过程中的一个关键里程碑。)”可知,由于可再生能源的快速发展,全球化石燃料的排放量可能很快开始下降,这个人们期待已久的峰值是努力控制地球升温程度过程中的一个关键里程碑。所以“milestone”指的是温室气体排放量的峰值。故选B。
2.推理判断题。根据文章第四段“Global leaders are currently discussing efforts to cut emissions at the COP29 climate summit in Baku, Azerbaijan. A decline in emissions could be a sign that the negotiations (谈判) are finally having an effect.(全球各国领导人目前正在阿塞拜疆巴库举行的第 29 届联合国气候变化大会(COP29)上讨论减排措施。排放量的下降可能表明这些谈判最终正在发挥作用。)”可知,排放量的下降可能表明谈判最终正在发挥作用,所以作者认为在 COP29 气候峰会上的谈判可能开始产生积极影响。故选D。
3.细节理解题。根据文章第五段“The growing supply of solar and wind energy has begun to displace fossil fuels, but so far in 2024, it’s been counteracted (抵消) by a growing need for electricity. Economies are growing and airline and shipping traffic is on the rise. The increased use of artificial intelligence also requires intensive amounts of electricity to run data centers. Severe heat waves around the globe this year also raised the demand for air conditioning, a sign of how worsening climate impacts can make it even harder to cut emissions.(太阳能和风能供应的不断增加已经开始取代化石燃料,但在2024年到目前为止,对电力不断增长的需求抵消了这一趋势。 故选A。
根据文章最后一段“Luckily, we are still, to some extent, masters of our fates and we can control how much warming there is.(幸运的是,在某种程度上,我们仍然是自己命运的主宰,我们能够控制地球的升温幅度。)”

Sociologist Antonio Casilli’s newly updated book Waiting for Robots, offers a detailed commentary on automation and artificial intelligence (AI). Casilli uses his academic knowledge to analyze the complicated, often invisible human labor that supports these systems. As its core, the book challenges the idea of fully autonomous AI.
Structured into three parts, the book systematically unpacks the complexities of digital labor. The first section represents the idea that AI ignores human work, suggesting instead that it re-equips labor in ways that cover its value. The second section provides vivid examples of how digital platforms exploit three kinds of human labor: “on-demand work, microwork, and social media work.” The final section examines the global inequalities made by these systems, proposing solutions such as platform cooperative and redistributive income models.
Central to Casilli’s argument is the concept of “artificial artificial intelligence (AAI),” a term he uses to describe how “human input is a major component of all artificial intelligence tools.” Platforms such as Amazon Mechanical Turk, Uber, and Facebook, for example, obtain value from human effort through tasks such as data annotation (批注), content adjustment, and algorithm (算法) training.
Building on this idea, the book also introduces multisided markets, where platforms design interactions to get value. Casilli offers insights into how video platforms reward viewers by selling advertising space, often without making up for content creators’ devotion directly. Beyond labor, he also shows the commercialization of user data, uncovering how platforms get profit from records of consumer behaviors, interactions, and social connections. This practice raises considerable concerns about supervision, privacy, and the worse situation of global inequalities.
Overall, Waiting for Robots makes a substantial contribution to the discussion on digital labor and platform capitalism. In its conclusion, Casilli suggests that “Data could become the direct, indivisible, and inalienable collective property of its users.” and encourages readers to propose a fairer and more inclusive digital economy.
1.What is a feature of the book Waiting for Robots?
A.It is packed with neat survey data.
B.It is intended for AI professionals.

A.To expose hidden human costs of AI.
B.To recommend vast application of AI.
C.To introduce potential impact of AI.
D.To present economic benefits of AI.
3.What does the underlined word “inalienable” in the last paragraph mean?
A.Non-profitable. B.Non-shiftable. C.Inefficient. D.Invisible.

Perfectionism and punctuality are often at odds in the workplace. But according to a recent study, it is better to submit a good-enough project on time rather than perfecting it through procrastination.
Researchers surveyed thousands of people in the U.S. and U.K., including managers and others whose jobs included evaluating others. They presented participants with the same examples of work, and then asked them to rate it. But first, they mentioned whether it was either submitted early, right at the deadline or late.
Respondents who were told it was late consistently rated the work as worse in quality than those who were told the same work was early or on time. The study also finds there isn’t much benefit to submitting work early since evaluators tended to rank work submitted before and at the deadline as the same quality. Furthermore, it didn’t matter how late the work was submitted, with one day or one week delays viewed just as negatively and that remained the case if the employee gave their manager advance warning.
A field experiment was conducted in a high school in China that had students grade pieces of art in a staged contest. The art was on a piece of paper that also included the date it was submitted. Even though the kids were told to ignore all other details on the paper other than the art itself, the version submitted after the deadline received lower grades. That study makes the broader point that it doesn’t really matter who set the deadline. In the eyes of the evaluator, any miss is a meaningful miss.
However, the reason behind the missed deadline mattered, researchers found. If it was due to forces beyond an employee’ s control, evaluators didn’t end up with as negative a view of the work as they did when the reason was one within their control. “If the reason why you missed the deadline was beyond your control, you as the employee should let your manager know,” Maglio says. “That seems to be one of the few instances in which people cut you a break.”
1.What does the underlined word “procrastination” in paragraph 1 mean?
A.Editing. B.Delay.
C.Co-operation. D.Redrafting.
2.What can be concluded from the research result?
A.Submitting work early earns a boost in evaluations.
B.Pre-communicated delays lead to positive evaluations.
C.Minimal delays get better evaluations than long delays.
D.Late work is judged more negatively than on-time submissions.
3.What does the author want to show by mentioning the field experiment in China?
A.The art itself rather than other details counts.
B.Kids tend to judge submissions more objectively.
C.A peer-to-peer evaluation can be an informative tool.
D.The research finding holds true across age and culture.
4.What can be implied from the last paragraph?
A.A hard deadline is often negotiable.
B.Bosses need to care about employees.
C.Communication around deadlines is vital.
D.The evaluation strategy should be improved.
由第一段中“But according to a recent study, it is better to submit a good-enough project on time rather than perfecting it through procrastination. (但根据最近的一项研究,最好按时提交一个足够好的项目,而不是通过procrastination来完善它)”可知procrastination与“按时”形成对比,再结合第三段中“Respondents who were told it was late consistently rated the work as worse in quality than those who were told the same work was early or on time. (参与者被告知作品是延迟提交的,其质量会比按时或提前提交的相同作品更差)”讲延迟提交的负面影响。由此猜测,划线词 procrastination应指“拖延(Delay)”。故选B项。
2.细节理解题。由第三段中“Respondents who were told it was late consistently rated the work as worse in quality than those who were told the same work was early or on time.
由第四段中“Even though the kids were told to ignore all other details on the paper other than the art itself, the version submitted after the deadline received lower grades. That study makes the broader point that it doesn’t really matter who set the deadline. (尽管孩子们被告知要忽略论文中除艺术本身之外的所有其他细节,但截止日期后提交的版本得分较低。这项研究提出了更广泛的观点,即谁设定最后期限并不重要)”可知,在中国高中的实验中,学生被要求仅根据艺术作品本身评分,但延迟提交的作品仍被评分更低,这说明即使在不同年龄(学生)和文化(中国)背景下,研究结论(延迟提交导致负面评价)依然成立。故选D项。
4.推理判断题。由最后一段中“If it was due to forces beyond an employee’ s control, evaluators didn’t end up with as negative a view of the work as they did when the reason was one within their control. “If the reason why you missed the deadline was beyond your control, you as the employee should let your manager know,” Maglio says. (如果这是由于员工无法控制的因素造成的,那么评估人员最终对工作的看法就不会像在他们可以控制的情况下那样消极。马格里奥说:“如果你错过截止日期的原因超出了你的控制范围,作为员工,你应该让你的经理知道。”)”可知,若延迟是因不可控因素(如外部原因),评价不会像可控因素(如拖延)那样负面,研究者建议员工应及时告知管理者原因,这说明围绕截止日期的沟通至关重要。故选C项。
Passage 4
The Internet is a busy place, with billions of interactions, millions of content pieces, and large numbers of social media accounts and data about people. But in recent years, the so-called “dead Internet theory” has gained popularity. The theory suggests that most activity online is generated by bots (网上机器人) and AI agents, not by humans.
Thanks to generative AI, plenty of AI-generated models and influencers now often show up online. AI-generated content has changed the dynamics of the Internet, making it cheaper than ever to become a content creator. It makes sense, especially from a creator’s perspective. If you spend a few hours on a video for your social pages, you expect to get likes, follows, and subscriptions. However, if you can produce three videos within the same time with AI assistance, you’re increasing your chances of creating those things within the same period.
However, AI could lead to an Internet that feels dead due to a lack of obviously original content and articles that lack a human-touch — regardless of viewpoint, experience or humour. Fortunately, one glimmer of hope here is that some online giants have been taking action to reduce bot use, or so they say. Such measures are partly due to advertisers becoming more understanding regarding what makes up real human views versus bot-generated ones. So, no, the Internet is not dead. At least not yet.
Dead Internet theory may be hyperbole (夸张), but it raises two important points. First, the Internet is undoubtedly moving in this direction. Second, and more significantly, the theory causes a broader unease about the emotional and social dynamics online. Social media is now the primary news source for many users around the world. Therefore, there’s potential for AI agents to promote false information and interact with each other to boost engagement, which does leave room for concern.
So we do have to accept that humans share online spaces with bots and AI agents. As information spreads faster than ever across digital platforms, caution is advised: Never assume it’s actually a human you’re interacting with on the other side of your screen.
1.What can be learned about “dead Internet theory”?
A.AI agents and bots dominate online activities.
B.Content found online is frequently repeated.
C.Humans are losing interest in online interactions.
D.Social media collapse due to information overload.
2.Why do today’s creators turn to Al for content production?
A.To guarantee the originality of their content.
B.To make content creation completely effortless.
C.To enhance efficiency of achieving their goals.
D.To adapt to the changing dynamics of the Internet.
3.What does paragraph 4 mainly talk about?
A.The role of social media in news distribution.
B.Digital platforms as the main source of news.
C.The analysis of the reasons for Internet death.
D.Social media’s influence and its potential issues.
4.What is the author’s advice on interacting online?
A.Decrease the application of artificial intelligence.
B.Protect personal privacy by limiting shared details.
C.Try to identify the reliability of real human beings.
D.Keep a watchful eye on the Internet interactions.
【答案】1.A 2.C 3.D 4.D
根据第一段的句子“But in recent years, the so-called “dead Internet theory” has gained popularity. The theory suggests that most activity online is generated by bots(网上机器人) and AI agents, not by humans.(但近年来,所谓的“互联网死亡理论”开始流行起来。该理论认为,大多数在线活动是由机器人和人工智能代理产生的,而不是人类。)”可知,“互联网死亡理论”认为AI代理和机器人主导了在线活动。故选A项。
根据第二段的句子“If you spend a few hours on a video for your social pages, you expect to get likes, follows, and subscriptions. However, if you can produce three videos within the same time with AI assistance, you’re increasing your chances of creating those things within the same period.(如果你在你的社交页面上花了几个小时制作视频,你希望得到喜欢、关注和订阅。然而,如果你能在人工智能的帮助下在同一时间内制作三个视频,你就增加了在同一时间内创造这些东西的机会。)”可知,创作者使用AI是为了提升效率以实现目标。故选C项。
3.主旨大意题。根据第四段的内容“Dead Internet theory may be hyperbole, but it raises two important points. First, the Internet is undoubtedly moving in this direction. Second, and more significantly, the theory causes a broader unease about the emotional and social dynamics online. Social media is now the primary news source for many users around the world. Therefore, there’s potential for AI agents to promote false information and interact with each other to boost engagement, which does leave room for concern.(互联网死亡理论可能有些夸张,但它提出了两个重要的观点。
根据最后一段的句子“As information spreads faster than ever across digital platforms, caution is advised: Never assume it’s actually a human you’re interacting with on the other side of your screen.(随着信息在数字平台上的传播速度比以往任何时候都要快,我们要提醒大家:永远不要以为在屏幕另一边与你互动的实际上是一个人。)”

When Philip Sontag first visited Antarctica as a Ph. D.student, he collected a bag of penguin (企鹅) feathers. A decade later, Sontag and his team have discovered how to use these feathers to map mercury (汞) pollution in the Southern Hemisphere, a growing threat to wildlife.
Mercury, a poisonous by-product of gold mining, becomes more and more in the food chain and affects animals’ nervous systems. While sampling rocks or soil for mercury provides limited insight, tracking its presence in the food web is crucial for ecosystem monitoring.
Penguins have a way to dispose of mercury through their feathers, which they molt (换羽) regularly. Sontag, now a polar researcher at Rutgers University, and his team analyzed these molted feathers to determine where penguins were exposed to mercury. They found a clear relationship between mercury levels and carbon-13, which varies geographically and acts as a marker for where penguins feed or breed (繁殖). The study confirmed this pattern. across seven penguin species in the Southern Ocean, revealing higher mercury exposure in northern, warmer regions with higher carbon-13 levels.
The findings suggest that penguins could serve as bioindicators, living trackers of environmental pollutants. By measuring mercury in feathers, scientists can track the metal’s movement through the oceanic food web over time, rather than just at a single moment. For example, penguin species living near each other showed different mercury and carbon-13 levels due to varying migration and feeding patterns. These data could be modeled into a map-like database to aid conservation and polar research.
Marine scientist Míria m Gimeno Castells notes that penguins are mid-level predators (捕食性动物), and undergo dramatic molts, making it easy to collect feathers from many individuals. The molted feathers contain mercury that gets into their body during the nonbreeding season.
Sontag plans to collect newer feathers from different species and compare mercury levels in penguins’ blood and their food with those in their feathers. As for the penguins’ health, senior author John Reinfelder makes it clear that they have not yet been exposed to poisonous mercury levels. “The penguins will be okay,” he says.
1.How did Sontag use the penguin feathers he collected?
A.He kept them as a reminder of his trip.
B.He studied the content of a chemical in them.
C.He observed their changes in different environments.
D.He classified them to identify different species of penguins.
2.What does the underlined part “dispose of” in paragraph 3 mean?
A.Recognize. B.Consume. C.Remove. D.Combine.
3.What do we know about penguins from the text?
A.They are ideal bioindicators.
B.They are sensitive to carbon-13.
C.They are top-level predators in the food chain.
D.They are free from the effects of human activities.
4.What is a suitable title for the text?
A.The Life Cycle of Penguins in Antarctica
B.Gold Mining and Its Effects on Penguins
C.The Impact of Climate Change on Penguin Populations
D.Penguins Help Map Antarctica’s Growing Mercury Threat
【答案】1.B 2.C 3.A 4.D
根据第三段“Sontag, now a polar researcher at Rutgers University, and his team analyzed these molted feathers to determine where penguins were exposed to mercury. They found a clear relationship between mercury levels and carbon-13, which varies geographically and acts as a marker for where penguins feed or breed
根据第三段“Penguins have a way to … mercury through their feathers, which they molt (换羽) regularly(企鹅有一种通过它们定期更换的羽毛来……汞的方式)”以及第四段“By measuring mercury in feathers, scientists can track the metal’s movement through the oceanic food web over time(通过测量羽毛中的汞含量,科学家们可以随着时间的推移追踪这种金属在海洋食物网中的移动情况)”可知,企鹅羽毛中会含有汞,企鹅通过换羽,也就是它们把体内的汞通过羽毛排出了。
根据第四段“The findings suggest that penguins could serve as bioindicators, living trackers of environmental pollutants.(这些发现表明,企鹅可以作为生物指示器,即环境污染物的活体追踪器)”以及第五段“Marine scientist Míria m Gimeno Castells notes that penguins are mid-level predators (捕食性动物), and undergo dramatic molts, making it easy to collect feathers from many individuals.(海洋科学家米里亚姆・希梅诺・卡斯特尔斯指出,企鹅是中层捕食性动物,并且会经历明显的换羽过程,这使得从许多企鹅个体身上收集羽毛变得很容易)”可知,企鹅作为中层捕食性动物,换羽使得人们收集羽毛很容易,且企鹅羽毛能反映环境污染物情况,所以它们是理想的生物指示器。故选A。
根据第一段“When Philip Sontag first visited Antarctica as a Ph. D. student, he collected a bag of penguin (企鹅) feathers. A decade later, Sontag and his team have discovered how to use these feathers to map mercury (汞) pollution in the Southern Hemisphere, a growing threat to wildlife.(当菲利普·桑塔格(Philip Sontag)第一次以博士生的身份访问南极洲时,他收集了一袋企鹅羽毛。十年后,桑塔格和他的团队发现了如何利用这些羽毛来绘制南半球的汞污染图,这对野生动物构成了日益增长的威胁)”、第四段“By measuring mercury in feathers, scientists can track the metal’s movement through the oceanic food web over time(通过测量羽毛中的汞含量,科学家们可以随着时间的推移追踪这种金属在海洋食物网中的移动情况)”以及最后一段“Sontag plans to collect newer feathers from different species and compare mercury levels in penguins’ blood and their food with those in their feathers.
Passage 6
Although daydreaming is often seen as an enjoyable escape from the dull, tough or repetitive aspects of everyday life, the act of “pleasurable thinking” is more challenging and less satisfying than many people might think, according to a growing body of research.
Years ago, Nicholas Buttrick and his team conducted a study. The researchers asked, “Which is more enjoyable: trying to think enjoyable thoughts or doing daily individual activities?” They found that of the 2,557 participants from 12 sites in 11 countries, most people, across cultures, enjoyed engaging in individual activities more than thinking freely and entertaining themselves with their thoughts as best they could. “Participants randomly assigned to do something reported significantly greater gratification than that of participants randomly assigned to think for pleasure, and the results were consistent in every country,” Buttrick concluded.
Recently, a follow-up study led by Erin Westgate, a psychology professor at the University of Florida, investigated why so many people do not choose to think for pleasure, and when directed to do so, struggle to concentrate successfully.
The researchers started by providing participants with specific examples of meaningful topics and then instructed them to think “meaningful” thoughts. Surprisingly, they discovered that asking people to think meaningful thoughts actually made daydreaming much less enjoyable than freely thinking about unguided thoughts. “I was so confused,” Westgate said. But after analyzing which meaningful topics participants reported thinking about when asked to think about something meaningful, she realized that “they were heavy stuff”.
Westgate wants to help people recapture that daydream state, which may boost wellness. Although improving daydream states can be difficult, she recommends priming (指引) the brain to think about topics that are both enjoyable and meaningful.
“It’s something that sets us apart. Thinking for pleasure allows us to imagine new realities,” Westgate said. “But that kind of thinking requires practice. As you build your ability to daydream, you’ll have a source of enjoyable thoughts during stressful times. The next time you’re walking, instead of pulling out your phone, try it.”
1.What is the common understanding of “pleasurable thinking” among people?
A.It is a form of relaxation. B.It is a usual daily practice.
C.It is a sign of wasting time. D.It is a hard but rewarding activity.
2.What is the closest meaning to the underlined word “gratification” in paragraph 2?
A.Success. B.Boredom. C.Hesitation. D.Enjoyment.
3.Which of the following made Westgate puzzled?
A.The research methods.
B.The joy levels of the participants.
C.The participants’ choice of meaningful topics.
D.The lack of a clear definition of “meaningful thoughts”.
4.What advice does Westgate give to people?
A.Focusing on new realities.
B.Engaging in physical exercise.
C.Keeping daydreaming during tough times.
D.Daydreaming on both pleasant and significant subjects.
【答案】1.A 2.D 3.B 4.D
根据第一段“Although daydreaming is often seen as an enjoyable escape from the dull, tough or repetitive aspects of everyday life, the act of “pleasurable thinking” is more challenging and less satisfying than many people might think, according to a growing body of research.(尽管白日做梦通常被认为是逃避日常生活枯燥、艰难或重复的一种愉快的方式,但越来越多的研究表明,“愉快思考”的行为比许多人想象的更具挑战性,也不那么令人满意)”可知,人们对“愉快思考”的共同理解是这是一种放松的方式。故选A项。
根据前文“They found that of the 2,557 participants from 12 sites in 11 countries, most people, across cultures, enjoyed engaging in individual activities more than thinking freely and entertaining themselves with their thoughts as best they could.(他们发现,在来自11个国家12个地点的2557名参与者中,不同文化背景的大多数人更喜欢参与个人活动,而不是自由思考和尽可能地用自己的想法娱乐自己)”可知,被随机分配做某件事的参与者比被随机分配思考快乐的参与者报告的满足感要大得多,推知gratification应是“满足感”之意,和D项意思相近。故选D项。
根据第四段“Surprisingly, they discovered that asking people to think meaningful thoughts actually made daydreaming much less enjoyable than freely thinking about unguided thoughts. “I was so confused,” Westgate said.(令人惊讶的是,他们发现,要求人们思考有意义的内容实际上会让白日梦的乐趣大打折扣,远不如自由放飞思绪来得愉快。“我当时非常困惑,”韦斯特盖特说)”可知,思考有意义的内容远不如自由放飞思绪来得愉快,所以是参与者的快乐程度,让韦斯特盖特感到困惑。故选B项。
4.细节理解题。根据倒数第二段“Westgate wants to help people recapture that daydream state, which may boost wellness. Although improving daydream states can be difficult, she recommends priming (指引) the brain to think about topics that are both enjoyable and meaningful.(韦斯特盖特希望帮助人们重拾白日梦的状态,这可能会促进健康。尽管改善白日梦状态可能很困难,但她建议让大脑开始思考既有趣又有意义的话题)”可知,韦斯特盖特建议对愉快和重要的话题做白日梦。故选D项。

In a crowded room on the sixth floor of an old building on Eighteenth Street, the Endangered Language Alliance (ELA) works to preserve languages from around the world that are not recognized by governments or taught in schools.
This unique organization is home to linguists (语言学家), activists, and enthusiasts whose main job is to save endangered, indigenous (土著的), and primarily spoken languages. The ELA is a centre for the linguistically diverse, a place where New Yorkers tune into the deeper frequencies of their city and the world.
The languages here often go unrecognized by governments, unused by businesses, and absent from classrooms, yet they carry the weight of human expression just as any other language. With no books or recordings in major libraries or online platforms, these tongues face an uphill battle against oblivion (遗忘).
Google says it organizes all the world’s information, and Facebook talks about bringing the world closer, but these websites only work in a little over a hundred languages, and even Wikipedia is only in 331 languages.
As languages disappear quickly, the ones in the most danger are those that are not well recorded and are spoken by small, ignored groups. New York, with more than 700 languages, is a safe place for these struggling languages. The city’s many languages are unique and may not last, so they need to be acknowledged, understood, and helped.
In the last few decades, many people have moved to New York from Asia, Africa, and Latin America, bringing lots of different languages with them. As these people who speak these languages move here, their stories come together on Eighteenth Street, forming the core of the book, Language City: The Fight to Preserve Endangered Mother Tongues in New York. We journey from the ELA to individual neighbourhoods and beyond, exploring the linguistic life of cities, the threats they face, and the fightback by linguists and speakers alike. Looking back in time, we find out how New York became very important for languages that are in danger, and a place that gives hope to them all around the world.
1.What is the primary focus of the Endangered Language Alliance?
A.Promoting the use of major world languages.
B.Supporting languages spoken by the majority.
C.Teaching languages in classrooms.
D.Preserving linguistic diversity.
2.What is the significance of New York City in the context of endangered languages?
A.It is the headquarters of the ELA.
B.It is home to over 700 languages.
C.It is where the book Language City is set.
D.It is the birthplace of many endangered languages.
3.What can be inferred about the people who have moved to New York from other continents?
A.They are all linguists working for the ELA.
B.They have little knowledge of other languages.
C.They added a wealth of languages to the city.
D.They are interested in preserving their own languages.
4.In which section of a newspaper can you probably read the text?
A.Technology. B.Travel. C.Business. D.Culture.
【答案】1.D 2.B 3.C 4.D

Passage 1
Did you know that one of the most important keys to success is positive thinking? With this key, it is easier to improve relationships, have better health, and enjoy happiness, satisfaction, and inner peace. It is also helpful in dealing with daily issues. 1 Your life tends to be brighter and more promising because of that.
This key also requires that you take positive action. You need to develop a positive attitude toward life and expect a successful outcome in whatever you do. Moreover, you are supposed to pass on your positive thinking to people around you and affect them accordingly. 2 As you think about happiness, good health, and success, you will cause people to feel delighted to like you and desire to help you because they enjoy the feelings that a positive mind brings about.
Effective positive thinking that brings results is much more than just repeating a few positive lines such as “everything is going to be all right”. 3 It is also not enough to think positively for a few moments, and then let fears and lack of belief enter your mind. Effort and inner work are necessary.
Here are some tips for developing positive thinking and actions:
●Use only positive words while thinking and while talking. Use words such as, “I can”, “I am able”, “it is possible”, “it can be done”, etc.
●Allow only feelings of happiness, strength, and success into your awareness.
● 4 Refuse to think such thoughts, by replacing them with constructive and happy thoughts. Every time a negative thought finds its way into your mind, immediately replace it with a positive thought.
●In your conversation, use words that bring forth feelings and mental images of strength, happiness, and success.
●Before starting with any plan or action, visualise clearly in your mind its successful outcome. 5 Only in this way can you be best motivated and take positive actions.
A.Your mental moods are infectious.
B.Disregard and ignore negative thoughts.
C.It has to be your leading mental attitude.
D.The importance of positive thinking is obvious.
E.There are many factors that cause a negative attitude.
F.Remember to imagine your future with concentration and belief.
G.Positive thinking makes everything flow more smoothly, with fewer conflicts.

1.How old is the author probably?
A.He is about 18 years old. B.He is about 40 years old.
C.He is about 58 years old. D.He is about 84 years old.
2.What is the life of the author living in the past 40 years after graduation?
A.Mixed. B.Tough. C.Joyful. D.Simple.
3.What does the author mean in the last paragraph?
A.He hopes to live longer. B.He is confident about life.
C.He wants to be a creative man. D.He misses his wife and kids.
4.Why is a water tower mentioned in the text?
A.To suggest the interest the author has. B.To explain why the seniors number it.
C.To describe the life the author is living. D.To stress how important living positively is.

A.Helping other farmers shake off poverty.
B.Combining profitability with sustainability.
C.Applying new technology in modern farming.
D.Changing the landscapes of their residential areas.

A.Well begun is half done.

D.Positive.

4.What do we know about Casilli from the text?
A.He is brave and strong-willed.
B.He is honest and warm-hearted.

B.Travel. C.Business. D.Culture.

Passage 2
Having good conversations — whether with strangers or with your friends — is an art. Here are some tips that can help you master the art.
First of all, listen. Listening, which requires energy and attention, is not only hard but also essential. 1
Be present. People think that being present means not looking at your email or texting during the conversation. If you want to have a good conversation, you don’t just need to put your phone down, you have to put it away. 2 . In one study, researchers placed a silent cellphone on a table between two strangers. It didn’t belong to either participant. The strangers reported their conversation partner to be unlikeable and untrustworthy — simply because the phone was there.
3 . It’s easy to stop listening when you’re planning what you’re going to say next,Think of listening like a river. You block it up all the time when you stop listening in order to think about what you’re going to say next. As soon as those thoughts come into your brain, you need to let them go out of your brain and then return to the conversation.
Ask open-ended questions. 4 . For example, rather than asking, “Are you sitting down?” you might try, “What kind of chair do you like to sit in?”
Stay out of the details and be brief. 5 . On the other hand, nobody cares about the exact date something happened or the last name of your cousin.
A.Go with the flow of the conversation
B.Try not to repeat the unimportant information
C.Yes or no questions don’t lead the conversation very far
D.The mere presence of technology makes the conversation harder
E.If you cannot concentrate, then you’re not really having a conversation
F.Listening may also mean being physically present when another person is talking
G.On one hand, if you’re getting into too many details, it is easy to lose focus on the big picture
Passage 3
Gratitude is a powerful emotion that can transform our lives. When we develop a sense of gratitude, we become more aware of the happiness in our lives. 1 It needs to be developed in our daily lives. Here are some effective ways to develop a sense of gratitude.
Keep a gratitude journal.
Record your reasons to be thankful each day in order to solidify (巩固) them in your memory. Record about five things you’re thankful for every single day. These can be things as simple as “the sun was shining”. 2
Talk about gratitude with family.
3 This could be during dinner, for example, where each family member takes turns to discuss what made them thankful that day. Encourage everyone to be specific in their responses. By making this a routine, you can develop a habit of focusing on the good things in life.
Send thank you notes.
It is really amazing what sending just a small thank you note can do. A thank-you note acknowledges that you appreciate what they’ve done. 4 Just write a few words to let them know how much their efforts mean to you. Handwritten thank you notes have a special touch that texts and emails can’t quite match.
5
Blaming yourself and others will make you less able to be truly thankful. When you find that you’re thinking negatively about yourself or another person, stop and turn that thinking around. If you think “I am so stupid when it comes to math”, tell yourself “I am having some difficulties with this math problem” instead.
A.Fill your life with passion and purpose.
B.Be positive about yourself and other people.
C.You don’t need to write a whole novel to thank them.
D.However, gratitude is not something we are born with.
E.It’s also about giving back to your community and friends.
F.You may even find you have more than five things you want to record.
G.Establish a regular time for everyone to share what they are thankful for.

Passage 5
In a conversation, it’s often not just what we say but what we’re asked that makes the difference. The right question can unlock thoughts and feelings we didn’t even know we wanted to share.
Imagine you’re at a party making small talk. Instead of the usual “How’s work?” someone asks, “What’s been inspiring you lately?” 1 You find yourself sharing thoughts about a book that changed your views or a recent experience that moved you. The interaction transforms from polite little chat to genuine engagement. 2 In professional settings, thoughtful questions can lead to better problem-solving and stronger teams. During brainstorming, rather than asking “Any ideas?” try “What would we do if resources were unlimited?” Thoughtful questions like these spark creativity and innovation.
What makes a question “good”? The best questions come from pure curiosity and a desire to understand, not to confirm existing beliefs or direct conversations toward predetermined conclusions.
3 Before asking something, consider what you really want to learn about the person or topic. It’s the difference between asking “How’s the new job?” out of politeness and “What’s been most surprising about your new role?” from real interest.
Open-ended questions invite richer responses. Instead of “Did you enjoy your vacation?” ask “What moment from your trip will you remember most vividly?” 4
Context matters too. Questions appropriate for close friends might be too personal for new acquaintances. Being mindful of relationships and situations helps create comfortable and meaningful exchanges.
The art of asking questions and establishing deeper connections is an ongoing journey. 5 Each one is an invitation to understand someone better, to see the world through their eyes, and to create moments of close human connection. Your next question might unlock an in-depth conversation, a new understanding, or even a life-changing relationship.
A.Suddenly, the conversation shifts.
B.You might not know how to respond.
C.This power extends beyond social situations.
D.Creating powerful questions starts with genuine curiosity.
E.A good question makes the other person feel positive and uplifted.
F.This way, you’re encouraging specific experiences and emotions sharing.

Ever wondered how many drops of water a single penny can hold before spilling? This seemingly simple experiment reveals the invisible 1 governing liquids and offers a delightful “wow” moment. Let’s 2 the science adventure with only a penny, a dropper (滴管), water, and a steady hand.
First, clean a copper penny to remove dirt or oils — 3 coins work best. Then fill the dropper with water and begin 4 droplets onto the penny’s surface, one at a time. Watch closely as the water forms a dome (圆丘), growing taller with each addition. Here’s 5 things get strange: 6 the penny’s flat surface, the water won’t spill immediately. Instead, it creates a 7 bubble beyond expectations.
The magic lies in surface tension — water molecules (分子) holding together through cohesive forces. Like an elastic skin, this tension 8 the liquid until gravity overpowers it. Count the drops until the dome 9 ; most trials yield 25 — 40 drops. 10 like water temperature or cleanliness will affect results 11 , as they change molecular bonds.
