Louise who is a believer in “tough love”, made her 14-year-old son sleep outside in “freezing temperatures” without a sleeping bag to teach him a lesson, as she thinks it’s important that her kids know how to deal when things go wrong.
The single mum with a strict parenting technique has admitted some parents might disagree with her method, but that it’s her job to “equip them with the tools to deal when things go wrong”. So she’s “proud” that her children have the resilience to deal with life’s challenges.
The mum explained of one particular time when her son Michael, who was 14 at the time, forgot his sleeping bag at home after he was taken to scout camp — so she made him sleep outside in the freezing cold. Louise said, “Did I jump in the car and do the hour-long round trip to fetch it for him? No, I did not. I simply blew him a kiss and drove away. I was fully aware that he would spend the night shaking, with nothing but the tarpaulin (防水油布) of the tent protecting him from the bad weather. But I felt no guilt at all.” According to the mum, her son was old enough to take responsibility for this himself, and she believed he would benefit from the experience. Michael added that his mum is the only parent he knows that would let their kid sleep without a sleeping bag in “freezing temperatures”, but that he hasn’t forgotten an important piece of equipment since.
Another time, her younger son Christian had been off school ill, and by the weekend he was still feeling sore and achy, but she still made him “push through” and play in a match. When it comes to school, Louise didn’t want her children to receive any special treatment, so she asked the school not to give them praise for anything they hadn’t excelled in.
Louise says parents are too soft nowadays and thinks her parenting technique has made her children “share mutual respect and great communication as well as a lot of fun”.
4. Which can best replace the underlined word “resilience” in paragraph 2?
A. Power. B. Chance. C. Habit. D. Patience.
5. What is Michael’s attitude towards his mother’s “tough love”?
A. Doubtful. B. Concerned. C. Disapproving. D. Positive.
6. How should parents educate their children in Louise’s view?
A. By recognizing what they have achieved. B. By allowing them to do what they like best.
C. By making them solve their challenges alone. D. By asking teachers to praise them often in school.
7. In which column of a newspaper can we read this text?
A. Real life. B. World news. C. Future life. D. Children’s stories.

In Switzerland, one in three employees suffers from workplace stress. Those affected often don’t realize that their physical and mental resources are weakening until it’s too late. This makes it all the more important to identify work-related stress as early as possible where it happens: in the workplace.
Researchers at ETH Zurich are now taking an extremely important step in this direction. Using new data and machine learning, they have developed a model that can tell how stressed we are just from the way we type and use our mouse.
To develop their stress model, the ETH researchers observed 90 study participants (参与者) in the lab performing office tasks that were as close to reality as possible, such as scheduling meetings or recording and studying data. They recorded the participants’ mouse and keyboard behavior as well as their heart rates. In addition, the researchers asked the participants several times during the experiment how stressed they felt.
While some participants were allowed to work quietly, others also had to take part in a job interview. Half of this group were also repeatedly stopped by chat messages. In contrast to earlier studies by other scientists, where the control group often did not have to solve any tasks at all and could relax, in the ETH researchers’ experiment, all participants had to perform the office tasks.
The ETH researchers proved that stressed people type and move their mouse differently from relaxed people. “People who are stressed move the mouse pointer more often and less exactly and cover longer distances on the screen. Relaxed people, on the other hand, take shorter, more direct routes to reach their destination,” says Nägelin, a mathematician who conducts research. What’s more, people who feel stressed in the office make more mistakes when typing. They write on and off with many short pauses (停顿). Relaxed people take fewer but longer pauses when typing on a keyboard.
8. Why do researchers at ETH Zurich develop the stress model?
A. To find suitable solutions to pressure. B. To ensure employees’ physical health.
C. To identify employees’ job-related pressure. D. To examine employees’ stress-related illnesses.
9. What can be known from the process of building the model?
A. The participants were asked various questions.
B. The participants performed the same office tasks.
C. The control group did nothing but relax themselves.
D. Some participants were repeatedly stopped by messages.
10. What will happen if a man at work is under much stress?
A. He may feel relaxed when typing. B. He may move the mouse pointer exactly.
C. He may make more mistakes when typing. D. He may type a document without any stop.
11. What is the most suitable title for the text?
A. Several ways to reduce our pressure at work.
B. Checking your pressure level through a stress model.
C. The great influence of much pressure on our work.
D. Detecting stress in the office from how people type and click.
D
Childhood memories of climbing trees or making daisy chains (雏菊花环) are becoming less common, according to a new survey, as the younger generations have few outdoor experiences.
The survey of 1,000 people found that the present generations of 15- to 34- year olds have fewer memories of some key countryside activities, such as swimming in rivers or digging holes at the beach.
The research found that three quarters of the older generation remember playing games or climbing trees, compared to two thirds of younger adults. The 55-plus generation also have more memories of collecting fossils (化石), visiting farms, or pond dipping. Altogether, two thirds of older people have memories of playing outdoors, compared to just over half of the younger generation.
The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) carried out the study at the start of the school term to stress the growing concern that children are not getting outdoors enough. The study found that 82% of people think that schools should provide more outdoor education, and most believe nature is still important to children today.
Dr Mike Clarke, Chief Executive of the RSPB, says children who are kept indoors suffer from “nature deficit disorder (自然缺失症)”. He says public funding should be used by the government to take children on day trips to nature reserves.
“To many people, it seems obvious that an important part of childhood is exploring the world. Unfortunately, this is far from the case, and the amount of time and contact children are having with nature is reducing,” he says. “The RSPB has more than 40 years of history in getting children outdoors, and is committed to continuing to play its part. We now need the government and schools to recognize the important role the public believes they should play in enabling all children to experience, enjoy and benefit from contact with the natural environment.”
12. Compared with the present generation, the older generation .
A. had fewer chances to visit big cities. B. had more homework when they were kids.
C. are more willing to live in the countryside. D. have more memories of outdoor experiences.
13. What is paragraph 3 mainly about?
A. The purpose of the survey. B. People’s attention to outdoor activities.
C. The findings of the survey. D. Different ideas about outdoor activities.
14. What does Dr Mike Clarke advise the government to do?
A. Offer new outdoor sources to kids.
B. Build more nature reserves for kids.
C. Stress the importance of kids going outside.
D. Give money to help kids visit natural reserves.
15. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A. The RSPB will continue the practice of getting kids outdoors.
B Schools have been stressing the importance of nature.
C. Schools fail to spend money getting kids outdoors.
D. Children have little contact with nature at present.

第二节 (满分25分)
47. I met the Man of the Trees in summer ten years ago, when I was visiting Uncle Jita.
Those were difficult times. People were cutting down our forest, and there was often flooding. Sometimes our water supply was dirty. When our pump(水泵)did have clean water, we had to wait in line for ages. When the pump wasn’t working, we had to walk five kilometres to the closest stream.
But I was happy. I was going to see my favorite uncle. When the day finally arrived, Dad drove me to Uncle Jita’s house and left. Once he saw me, Uncle Jita announced, “Tomorrow we’re going to explore a magical place. Here is my camera, Amy. You can take photos of what you see.”
The following day, we woke up and left early on a boat. The trip was exciting. But when we got off, there was ... nothing in front of us. “I don’t want to take pictures of this,” I complained.
Uncle laughed,“Start walking, Amy. I promise you’ll be surprised.” After some time, I could see the outline of a forest in the distance. A little closer, there was a man waving to us.
“That’s Kabir. The forest you see is his. He planted every single tree.” As we walked towards Kabir, Uncle explained that thirty years ago, the whole area was a wasteland. But one day Kabir decided to change all that and started planting trees. Thanks to him, part of the wasteland is now a paradise(天堂).
Uncle introduced me to Kabir, who had gray hair and a determined face. “Jita told me you like animals. Are you ready to see some?” he asked. “Of course!” I replied. We continued walking and soon were under the trees. I turned my head and was amazed at the difference between the two places. All because of the efforts of one man.
Like Uncle said, Kabir’s forest was magical. We saw deer, rhinos, and even tigers. During lunchtime, Kabir explained how, by planting trees, it was possible to stop the land from eroding(侵蚀).
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;

【答案】8. C 9. D 10. C 11.

12. Compared with the present generation the older generation .
A. had fewer chances to visit big cities. B. had more homework when they were kids.
C. are more willing to live in the countryside. D. have more memories of outdoor experiences.
B. Schools have been stressing the importance of nature.
C. Schools fail to spend money getting kids outdoors.
D. Children have little contact with nature at present.

Cultural heritage is unique and can’t be replaced once it has gone. Therefore, it is important to protect cultural heritage because preserving it promises great benefits for the future.
The public should promote the awareness of cultural heritage protection. Countries should team up with one another to work out practical plans regarding cultural heritage protection. As senior students, we can help protect cultural heritage by making visitors respect its history.

第二节 (满分25分)

【答案】Hearing this, I turned to my uncle, “I think we can plant trees too.” Grabbing the camera in my hand, I added with excitement. “I’ve got a plan! I’ll show them the photos of Kabir’s magical forest! ” Seeing Uncle and Kabir’s encouraging smile, I immediately set down to my work, busily pressing my shutter and capturing the amazing scenes in the forest. When Uncle and I went back to the village several days later and showed these wonderful pictures to my neighbour, they were stunned by the beauty of the forest. “It was the trees that turned the place into a paradise! ” We then explained our tree-planting plan to the villagers, which was quickly accepted by all of them.
In the years that followed, people in our village worked hard to carry out our plan. Instead of cutting down our forest, we started to plant trees, which has eventually helped protect the soil and stopped the land from eroding. Thanks to the trees, the water has been purified and we finally have clean and stable water supply. With our joint efforts, our village is now surrounded by small thriving forests with blooming flowers, lively animals and crystal-clear streams running through. Witnessing the gradual change of our village, we came to realize that only when we live in harmony with nature can we have a brighter future.
