Small Business Saturday is a relatively new shopping holiday in Rochester University. This
small and local business is home to more unique gifts than you may find at a national retail chain
— and we have an abundance of Rochester craftsmen to shop from this holiday season.
The Op Shop
The Op Shop features 32 different handmade vendor(小贩), making it a great spot to find
some truly unique gifts. They will be hosting their annual holiday market, Secondhand Wonderland,
on Saturday Dec.3, at the Nazareth College Field House. I went last year and found two great
winter sweaters and some fun ornaments.
Parkleigh
Parkleigh is a gift-shopping place in Rochester located on Park Ave. They feature a wide
variety of items from skin care, novelty socks to Rochester-themed items, and my personal favorite:
Jelly cat food dolls. The store features a mix of large and small businesses and is always a fun
place to check out on Saturdays.
高二英语 第 2 页 共 4 页
The Lucky Flea Market
I can't write an article about shopping local and small without mentioning The Lucky Flea.
This year they are hosting indoor markets throughout the colder months, featuring dozens of local
vendors. Many of the vendors sell second-hand clothing but there are also jewelry makers and
specialty foods. Check out their first indoor market of the season on Saturday, Nov.20!
Central Rock Gym
Looking for an experience gift on Saturdays? Buy a gift card from Central Rock Gym for a
day pass with all climbing equipment included. My friends and I went last year and it was a lot of
fun learning how to rock climb and bouldering. This can also be an option for any fitness class at a
local gym or specialty fitness center.
20. Where can you buy a unique handmade gift for your friend? ______
A. The Op Shop. B. Parkleigh.
C. The Lucky Flea Market. D. Central Rock Gym.
22. What is special about The Lucky Flea Market? ______
A. It sells food. B. It offers clothing.
C. It opens on Saturdays. D. It features experience gift.
23. Where is the text probably taken from? ______
A. A travel brochure. B. A campus website.
C. An official document. D. A market research report.

Technological progress has transformed every aspect of my life. I bank online and learn online.
Just like other young people, when I'm hungry and busy, I will order food through a food delivery
app, especially during the pandemic. These apps are fast and convenient.
A survey of the food delivery service online conducted in the US shows that 26% of the
people surveyed use food delivery service once a week, while 24% order food 2—3 times per week.
Some have meals delivered even more often, with 8% ordering 6 times per week.
However, I deleted Uber Eats from my phone two months ago. Not because I didn't like using
it. I loved it. I can order precisely what I feel like eating. And I can have that hot meal delivered to
my door within about 30 minutes with only a small fee. It's the kind of on-demand service that
used to be reserved for the ultra-wealthy. Now ordinary people, like me, lying on their couches,
working late in their living rooms, or isolating themselves at home during the pandemic can enjoy
it, too.
However, I was shocked when I knew that five delivery riders were killed in three months last
spring. Some riders sometimes were paid at rates lower than the minimum wage or without much
of the basic protection enjoyed by the rest of us. They were also doing their jobs in an unsafe
working environment—our city streets. This is particularly the case in Sydney, where some major
media organizations have complained about the construction of safe cycling infrastructure(基础设
施)for decades and worse still, state governments have previously torn up bike paths.
So I deleted the app and haven't used it, or any of its competitors, since then. I have no
illusions that my standpoint will make a big difference. But I think our governments need to fight
against the companies reshaping our lives and our communities for the worse to make our cities
safer for everyone, including cyclists.
24. What can we learn about Uber Eats from Paragraph 3? ______
A. It used to deliver hot food.
B. It can satisfy different users' demands.
C. It favors a particular group of people.
D. It was the most popular app during the pandemic.
25. What's the main reason for the author's deleting Uber Eats? ______
A. The extra delivery fee.
B. The attraction from other apps.
C. Delivery riders' safety problems.
D. Heavy traffic jams caused by delivery riders.
26. What's the author's purpose of writing the last paragraph? ______
A. To ask us to rethink the advantages of technological advances.
B. To call on us to play a role in the community development.
C. To state the problems of commercial companies.
D. To appeal to governments to make some changes.
27. What can be the best title for the text? ______
A. Why I gave up using food delivery apps.
B. The rise and fall of Uber Eats.
C. My addiction to social apps.
D. How I can live with apps.

For adults who have struggled with understanding new math homework or surprised at how
quickly kids can learn a second language, there is new evidence that shows kids can really learn
things much faster than adults.
A study published in Current Biology finds that children and adults have different
concentrations of a key brain messenger called gamma-aminobutyric acid, or GABA. This
messenger slows down the brain by blocking specific signals in the body's central nervous system.
It also produces a calming effect and is thought to play a major role in controlling the overactivity
of nerve cells associated with anxiety, stress and fear. All these contribute to the learning of new
things.
In the study, the researchers from Brown University used neuro-imaging techniques to
examine visual perceptive(视觉感知的) learning in elementary school-aged children and adults.
Participants were shown a number of different images and were later asked questions about them
following the test.
Visual learning caused an increase of GABA in children's visual cortex, the area of the brain
that processes visual information. However, GABA levels didn't change in the adults who took the
same visual tests. In addition, children participants kept that GABA increase for hours after
training ended, while the concentrations of GABA remained the same in the adults studied.
"In subsequent behavioral experiments, we found that children indeed learn more items within
a given period of time than adults."said Sebastian M.Frank, the co-author of the study. "Our results
therefore point to GABA as a key player in making learning more efficient in children."
These results, the authors argue, should encourage teachers and parents to keep giving
children opportunities to learn anything from riding a bike to playing an instrument throughout
their childhood.
The findings may also change neuro-scientists’ conception of brain maturity in children."
Although children's brains are not yet fully mature and many of their behavioral and cognitive
functions are not as efficient as in adults, children are not, in general, surpassed in their learning
abilities by adults." said study co-author Takeo Watanabe.
28. What's the function of GABA? ______
A. Send specific messages to the brain.
高二英语 第 3 页 共 4 页
B. Deal with complex math problems.
C. Make the nervous system more active.
D. Increase efficiency in learning new things.
29. What do we know about the children taking the visual test? ______
A. Their GABA concentrations kept increasing after training.
B. Their learning abilities still needed to be improved.
C. They could remember more images than adults.
D. They were surpassed by adults in learning abilities.
30. How did the researchers do the research? ______
A. By comparing participants’ reaction.
B. By analyzing statistics.
C. By collecting relative evidence.
D. By conducting online survey.
31. What does Takeo Watanabe want to say in the last paragraph? ______
A. Neuro-scientists don't fully understand brain maturity in children.
B. Children are not mature in their behavior and cognition.
C. It takes a long time for children's brains to be fully mature.
D. Children's brain maturity does not affect their learning abilities.

If you seek happiness, then you need to know what happiness is for you. I don't believe there
is one universal definition(普遍定义) of happiness. Happiness is a very subjective(主观的)
emotion, according to me. Put two people in identical situation: same amount of money, life
experiences, etc. and you can be pretty sure that they both wouldn't feel equally happy or equally
sad. I believe this is so because there are two kinds of happiness. There is one kind of happiness,
which is kind of universal and then there is the other kind, which is very individual to each one of
us. It is this kind of happiness that I find more interesting.
The second kind of happiness that I talk about comes from our expectations out of our lives,
which vary from person to person. For example, a person who expects a lot out of his or her life
may find that happiness is hard to find. They are constantly in search of these things in life, which
always seem to elude (逃避) them. Those things may be money or fame or power or any of the
other pursuits (追求) that humans have, but it would be likely that such people are less likely to
be happy, if their goals are not met. In most cases, even after their goals are met, they don't find
happiness, because they seek more—new goals, new wish lists, and it's a seemingly never-ending
process for them!
On the other hand, a person who takes life as it comes along and makes the best of each day is
more likely to be happy every day. They have no pressure or goals to occupy their minds and they
can achieve happiness from the simple pleasures of everyday life, finding love, making time for the
family and kids, seeing their kids grow, etc. Of course, that doesn't mean that you shouldn't have
any expectations at all. You should keep those expectations reasonable and manageable.
32. Which of the following is the author's opinion according to Paragraph 1? ______
A. Happiness has one universal definition.
B. Every individual has his own happiness.
C. There are no people who are really happy.
D. Happiness means having money and power.
33. What does the underlined part "these things" in Paragraph 2 probably refer to? ______
A. Daily demands. B. Life experiences.
C. Ideas about happiness. D. Expectations out of life.
34. Even if their goals are met, some people still don't feel happy because ______ .
A. they gave too much for their goals
B. they don't know what happiness is
C. they have new goals that need achieving
D. they think sadness is a never-ending process
35. The author writes this passage mainly to tell readers ______ .
A. the definition of happiness
B. the importance of happiness
C. to enjoy every day to the fullest
D. to give up their dreams and be practical

67. 阅读下面材料, 根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
It was a hot day in Florida. The school year had just ended and it was time for summer
vacation. We had just gotten a little black dog who we named One-Eyed. We chose that name
because he could only see out of one eye.
Everybody wanted to do something for the dog: feed him, teach him tricks and take long
walks with him. Everybody was so happy to have this active, playful and shaggy new addition to
our family. Everybody, that is, except my mom and me.
All my mom saw when she looked at the dog was someone else to clean up after. Shedding,
messy, muddy, he pounced all over the house. All Mom seemed to care about was getting the
house cleaned. My mom began to put Clorox(高乐氏漂白水) in the bathtub. There was no
messing with Mom when she started cleaning, so I decided to move out of the way. Actually,
getting out of the way is a move I'd been practicing for a long time.
Being the youngest in my family has had its advantages, of course. More than a few times I
was spoiled or everyone said I was the cutest. But being the youngest also came with its fair share
of troubles. "You're too young!" "You'll mess this up!" they'd often say. I knew that my family
loved me but I couldn't wait to show them I could do things by myself.
Every time I asked my brother or my sister if I could pet One-Eyed, they would shout, "No!"
or tell me that I had germs and if I touched One-Eyed he would die! I really believed them. Once I
even confessed to my mom that I touched the dog when no one noticed. At first, my mom seemed
very confused about what I was telling her, but then she realized. My mom scolded my brother and
sister, "You better stop teasing your little brother!" Little brother! That's exactly what I was. That
really got my blood boiling! Secretly,I decided, "I’ll show them what a little kid can do!"
注意:
(1)续写词数应为 150左右;
(2)请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Para 1: That afternoon, I took the dog and sneaked into the bathroom.

作文:
66. Ladies and Gentlemen,
I'm Li Hua. I am delighted to speak on the topic of "Technology and Lifestyles" at the TECH
TALK event. The development of technology has brought a massive transformation to our lives.
Technology has impacted our lives in so many areas, including healthcare, communication,
and transportation. For example, medical technology has advanced treatments, allowing us to save
more lives. Communication technology enables us to connect across the globe, further expanding
our horizons. Additionally, transportation technology has made travel more efficient and
cost-effective.
However, although technology has made many advances, it still has some limitations and
negative impacts. Over-dependence on technology can create social and personal problems, such as
addiction and mental issues.
To conclude, technology plays a critical role in society, which we must use wisely and
responsibly. We must utilize the benefits of technology and pay attention to its possible negative
consequences. By working together, we can create a healthier and more sustainable future.
Yours,
Li Hua
67.
That afternoon,I took the dog and sneaked into the bathroom. "I'm going to give you a bath!" I
announced. One-Eyed looked at me strangely, obviously not understanding what I was saying. I
took my sister's shampoo and poured the whole bottle into the bathtub. Then I coaxed the dog in
and started scrubbing the dirt off him with our towels. However, things quickly got messy. Soap
and water splashed everywhere; bubbles floated like tiny, soapy snowflakes. One-Eyed shook
himself vigorously and barked excitedly, soon turning the bathroom into a wet battleground. It
should have been my secret mission, but now, it turned into a disaster! Panicking, I ran out to seek
help, only to find my mom at the door.
I thought my mom would punish me, but she was just standing there and laughing. "Well, well,
what do we have here?" she chuckled, wiping away tears of laughter. I stammered, admitting
everything. Instead of scolding me, she bent down and gave me a gentle hug, " I knew you just
want to help. "Straightening up",she suggested, "Now shall we clean up the mess together, young
man? " "Yes,ma'am!" I nodded. Even though we never actually had a conversation about my being
the youngest, I think Mom understood I was trying to make my own place in our family. Bathing
the dog might not sound like a Declaration of Independence, but for a six-year-old, well, it was my
best shot.

W: It's not wasting time if you do it at certain times. Basically, during breaks and at lunch.
Also, small talk should not be viewed as a time to get personal information. That's impolite.
Well, in fact, it's not difficult to make small talk.
M: Hmm, I see. What else?
W: Bob, I know this is important, but can we talk after work? We have a project to

W: Yes, but it doesn't hurt to have one more. Besides, the interest rate on Easy Credit is
very low.
M: Stacy, the low interest rate promise is just a trick. It will go up immediately if you
happen to pay your bills a little late.
W: I pay my bills on time.
M: You should be careful. Do you have a copy of your application?
W: No, I don't.
M: Call up the credit company immediately and ask for your credit interest rate paper.
W: You're making me nervous. I don't think I'm in trouble.
M: I hope you're not.

M: Giulia, I'm doing a survey on students' life. Can I ask you some questions?
W: Of course.
M: What do you like doing in your free time, Giulia?
W: I'm really into music so I spend a lot of my time playing the guitar and I enjoy singing.
I try to play some of the songs from my favorite bands.
M: What do you like to do when you're on holiday?
W: My house is about 10 minutes’ walk to the mountains so we usually go to the
mountains. I like skiing very much. I love to spend time out on the snow. I first learned
when I was four years old so I'm quite good at it.
M: What about summer holidays?
W: I'm not that interested in going to mountains in summer. I can't bear going for long
walks among the trees and flowers and looking at the views. I prefer walking along the
beach. I can't swim though.
M: What is your favorite subject at school?
W: Well, English is OK but it's not my favorite. History is what I enjoy most, and
geography is the second. I want to study history at university. I'd like to be a history
teacher one day.
