SOU'TH PARIS, Maine For eight students in the Wilderness Leadership class at Oxford Hills High
School, a three-day weekend hike in the White Mountain National Forest sounded like a fun, challenging
course requirement
But when a storm dumped up to 3 feet of snow on western Maine, a harsh learning experience turned
into a crash course in winter survival
Reported missing from their scheduled meeting place in Gilead at 5:30 p.m. Sunday, the eight students
and two teachers were not found until 11 a.m. yesterday [Mondayl, after a pilot spotted the group moving
in rugged snow-blanketed area. The discovery followed an unsuccessful ground search by volunteers on
snowshoes.
After the group was reported missing Sunday, volunteers hiked 3 miles into the woods to look for the
students. The five-hour effort turned up nothing and the decision was made to wait until yesterday morning
to also canvass the area by air
A Maine Warden Service pilot lifted off and spotted the group close to their intended trail at about 11
a.m. Strong airflow prevented him from descending toward the hikers but the group clearly recognized the
plane as part of a search team.
"They waved at the plane. They laid down, spread out, and waved," said Mark Lati, a spokesman fo
the Maine Warden Service. "The pilot then guided a search party into their location."

We don't choose our siblings (兄弟姐妹) the way we choose our partners and friends. Of course, we
don't choose our parents either, but they usually make that up to us by sustaining us on the way to
adulthood. Brothers and sisters are just sort of there. And yet, when it comes to our development, they can
be more influential than parents. This holds whether they are older and cool, or younger and frustrating:
whether we follow in their footsteps, or run screaming in the other direction
Part of siblings' influence has to do with their sheer presence. Eighty-two percent of kids live with a
sibling (a greater share than live with a father), and about 75 percent of 70-year-olds have a living sibling
For those of us who have brothers or sisters, our relationships with them will likely be the longest of our
life.
Whether these relationships make our life better or worse is a more complicated question. On the
upside, positive interactions with siblings during adolescence foster empathy, prosocial behavior, and
academic achievement. This effect can be complicated by a full house, however. Kids with more siblings (a
larger "sibship," to use the industry term) do worse in school- although the universality of this finding
has been challenged by several studies.
When a sibling relationship is bad, however, it can be really bad - as in messing-up-your-life bad
Tense sibling relationships make people more likely to use substances and to be depressed and anxious in
adolescence, Moreover, slbling bullying makes a kid more likely to engage in self-harm as a teen and to
become psychotic (神经病的)by age 18.
Whether a person models herself after her siblings or tries to distinguish herself has particularly

important consequences. One study found that siblings who felt positively about each other tended
achieve similar education levels, while those who spent unequal time with their dad and got unequ
parental treatment had different educational fortunes.
That difference is not necessarily bad. Research suggests that as siblings' relationships with thei
parents grow more different over time, their relationship with each other may become warmer. An
imitating your sibling can be a mistake, depending on what she's up to: Girls are more likely to get pregna
in their teens and teenagers are more likely to engage in risky behavior if an older sibling did so first.
One way or another, sibling influence is lasting. A study of more than 1 millon Swedes found th
one's risk of dying of a heart attack increases sharply after a sibling dies of one, due not only to share
DNA but also to the stress of losing such a key figure. Most of us are different people than we'd have bee
if our brothers or sisters were never born. Siblings seem like they're just there only until they aren't
65. Which of the following may be a negative influence of more siblings
A. Messing up one's life
B. Lack of empathy and sympathy.
C. Isolation from the outside world
D. Less satisfactory academic achievement.
66. "Sibling bullying" and its consequences in Paragraph 4 are mentioned in order to
A. illustrate tense sibling relationships
B. explore the possibility of a kid to be a psychotic
C. introduce another type of bad sibling relationship
D. explain how bad a sibling relationship can be
67. We can conclude from Paragraph 5 that
A. siblings play a significant role in one's life
B. imitation of older siblings brings harm to teenagers
C. sufficient parental attention leads to higher education levels
D. siblings' warmer relationship is due to their diverging fortunes
68. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. Siblings are gifts from parents.
B. Sibling rivalry does good to one's life
C. Sibling influence is strong and lasting
D. Siblings have negative effects on one's life

A. To begin with, modern theories of the development of stars suggest that almost every star has some
sort of family of planets.
B. The first attempt failed, but someday the experiment may succeed
C. The only trouble is, none may be within easy distance of us
D. Our own planet may have been in existence for a long time
E. It is conceivable that someday we may meet one of the planets
P. From this it might seem that even if there were no technical problems involved. the chance of
receiving signals from any particular earth-type planet would be extremely small
In 1961, scientist set up gigantic, sensitive instruments to collect radio waves from the far reaches of
space, hoping to discover in them some mathematical pattern indicating that the waves were sent out by
other intelligent beings.__69__
What reason is there to think that we may actually detect intelligent life in outer space?
So any star like our own sun (and there are billions of such stars in the universe) is likely
to have a planet situated at such a distance that it would receive about the same amount of radiation as the
earth.
Furthermore, such a planet would probably have the same general composition as our planet; so
allowing a billion years or two or three, there would be a very good chance for life to develop, if current
theories of the origin of life are correct
But intelligent life? Life that has reached the stage of being able to send radio waves out into space in
a deliberate pattern? Our own planet may have been in existence for five billon years and may have had
life on it for two billion, but it is only in the last fifty years that intelligent life capable of sending radio
waves into space has lived on the earth. 71
This does not mean that intelligent life at our level does not exist somewhere. There are such an
unimaginable number of stars that, even at such miserable possibility, it seems certain that there are
millions of intelligent life forms scattered through space. 72 Perhaps none ever will be:
perhaps the distances that separate us from our fellow "creatures" of this universe will forever remain too
great to be conquered. And yet it is conceivable that someday we may come across one of them or,
frighteningly, one of them may come across us. What would they be like, these outside-the-earth creatures?
